pezdispenserJust installed ubuntu gnome 17.04,   will not boot, says boot device missing,  I need help00:05
daxuser27: not here, please00:05
jnrubyrubyrubypezdispens: you may need to set your BIOS to Legacy Support if it is in UEFI mode.00:08
pezdispenserjnrubyrubyruby: I've tried this,  However it does not fix the issue,  does not detect bootable device while in legacy,00:08
jnrubyrubyrubydo you have a dual boot situation, or just ubuntu?00:11
pezdispenserjnrubyrubyruby: no dual boot, just a fresh install of ubuntu gnome 17.0400:12
latemuswhen i try to use the lubuntu torrent to dowload the iso as suggested by the lubuntu download webpage, i get the error 'Failure reason "Requested download is not authorized for use with this tracker.'00:15
latemuswhy00:15
jnrubyrubyrubypezdispens: I don't have much more expertise, but it has happend to me on fresh install with 16.04, and it was some combination of UEFI, Legacy and Secure Boot settings.00:16
latemusah, looks like i need to wait longer before abandoning hope as per https://askubuntu.com/questions/761773/requested-download-is-not-authorized-for-use-with-this-tracker00:16
pezdispenserjnrubyrubyruby: I went to select trusted boot device,   selected something like shimuefix64,    says no bootable device now,  but... differently with a fancy picture,   this had been a fix on ubuntu 16.04 prior :(  but yes its some kind of issue with this00:17
latemustfw the iso the torrent is going to download is also 960M00:17
latemusbut direct download of the iso over http is only ~ 360M00:18
wellickhi, currently when i connect my tv to my pc i get two screens, but I only want 1 (same thing on laptop's screen as on the tv). how can I change that?00:19
wedgiewellick: may vary by de, but go to Displays and select "Mirror displays"00:21
pezdispenserjnrubyrubyruby:  I think I may have found something,  If I run the USB installer while the bios is in legacy , it will be installed to run legacy,  if I run the installer while biod is in uefi,  it will install it while on that.... here goes00:22
wellickwedgie: thanks!00:27
latemusi have brought shame to my family name. the iso is alway 900+m, is dvd image, my folly00:27

alexubuntuBack with a question about Unity Launcher Folders:01:00
alexubuntuI got it to run and created my folders, but when I click on them they just flash01:00
alexubuntuAnd nothing happens01:00
alexubuntuThey don't open up and show me the icons I added01:00
YankDownUnderalexubuntu: Just reminded me of yet another reason I loathe/despise Unity... :)01:04
alexubuntuYankDownUnder, Is there a better option?01:04
alexubuntuYankDownUnder, I'd like to de-clutter my launcher01:05
YankDownUnderFor a USB that gets carted around to different computers, I use a super light end window mangler...01:05
latemusYankDownUnder: why do you need a cart to move a usb drive01:06
latemusYankDownUnder: that must be some massive usb device bro01:06
YankDownUnderYersh...huge cart...01:06
alexubuntuYankDownUnder, It's 32 GB.  It has enough room for Ubuntu and a lot of apps01:06
alexubuntuYankDownUnder, I just use it for streaming video and playing roguelikes01:06
alexubuntuYankDownUnder, Windows 10 has been giving me problems, but I don't want to format a hard drive for Ubuntu01:07
YankDownUnderalexubuntu: That's not the point...RAM...that's the point. I generally use XFce or WindowMaker - very small footprint...but I digress...you're using *ahem* Unity...01:07
alexubuntuYankDownUnder, I have 16 GB of RAM, might as well use it :)01:07
YankDownUnderalexubuntu: Fair enough...01:08
YankDownUnderHave you looked through the forums/wikis about configuring Unity?01:08
alexubuntuYankDownUnder, I did to get it up and running in the first place.  I had to manually edit a Python file to make it even run01:09
alexubuntuYankDownUnder, Having trouble finding someone with the same issue as me01:09
YankDownUnderalexubuntu: Hold on - I'm trying to act surprised...hang on...it's coming...01:09
YankDownUnderNah...missed it.01:09
alexubuntuYankDownUnder, I take it Unity is not well-liked01:09
alexubuntuYankDownUnder, I haven't really tried Linux since I was in high school 15 years ago01:09
alexubuntuYankDownUnder, So this is all new to me01:10
YankDownUnderRight...so you've not been able to figure out why Unity is behaving badly...? And you've dug through all the forums about it?01:10
acovrigI’m looking for people’s opinion - I currenlty have 3x 6TB drives in mdadm RAID5. I don’t care about performance, but do care about reliability (yes I know RAID != backups; I have an offiste backup that’s ~4mo out of sync). I was doing some heavy IO on the RAID today and the system froze hard, had to force reboot, now mdadm is resyncing the array and things are finicky. Should I stay with mdadm or switch to something like ZFS or look 01:10
acovriga hardware RAID controller?01:10
YankDownUnderalexubuntu: Unity is dying a slow death - ending with 18.04 LTS01:10
alexubuntuYankDownUnder, What will replace it?01:11
raf_finally ;)01:11
xangua20:00 <alexubuntu> They don't open up and show me the icons I added / you mean some software you installed manually?01:11
raf_Gnome3 maybe ?01:11
YankDownUnderalexubuntu: Gnome301:11
YankDownUnder(Gee - No Me!)01:11
compdocacovrig, there are many low cost LSI controllers on ebay that work great with zfs01:11
raf_hah :-D01:11
alexubuntuxangua, I installed Unity Launcher Folders, and added some programs to a drawer.  The drawer appears on the launcher, but will not open when left-clicked01:11
alexubuntuYankDownUnder, Can I use Gnome3 on Ubuntu?01:12
xangua"unity launcher folders"?01:12
YankDownUnderalexubuntu: Yersh...01:12
acovrigcompdoc: I’m afraid of hardware RAID cards because what happens if the card itself dies? don’t I loose all my data and isn’t a hardware failure fairly likely? w/software RAID, the only thing to fail is the drives (or mobo) in which case I can replace it and let it do it’s parity; Is my understanding/thoughts wrong?01:13
alexubuntuYankDownUnder, Heh, "What follows is not an officially supported upgrade path. You will upgrade to GNOME 3.20 at your own risk. If adding the following PPAs breaks your system you get to keep all the pieces!"01:13
alexubuntuScary!01:13
compdocacovrig, if the card dies, which is very rare, you swap it with another low cost card01:14
acovrigcompdoc: isn’t the RAID data stored on the card though? so wouldn’t the new card just see x drives to be used in a new array?01:14
alexubuntuxangua, It's just a program that allows you to group icons in a drawer on the launcher01:15
YankDownUnderalexubuntu: It "breaks" a heap of GTK based libs - duh...so that's what ends up borked. Mate and Cinnamon, however (they're versions of Gnome) don't bust the system libs...that being said, I installed it...it doesn't interfere with WindowMaker or KDE (when I use it) or XFce...but that's ME...and it's merely IMHO...01:15
alexubuntuYankDownUnder, I'll see if I can work the courage01:15
xanguaYankDownUnder: one can install gnome shell without any issues01:16
YankDownUnderalexubuntu: Why not just use something nice and light and pretty - like XFce...? Simple as...has all kinds of bells and whistles and is SUPPORT cuz it's like ancient...hmm...01:16
alexubuntuYankDownUnder, I installed Ubuntu because I didn't know better, and because the VPN software I use is supported on Ubuntu01:17
YankDownUnderWhen I'm feeling "graphically needy" - I don't mind running Gnome3...ain't like the old days...but it's all right...better than KDE, really...01:17
YankDownUnderalexubuntu: Ubuntu is great stuff, bro. Strewth that.01:17
YankDownUnderalexubuntu: The beauty is that you can use a heap of different wm's and de's...01:18
alexubuntuYankDownUnder, I will try xfce01:19
jk0nexfce seconded. Love it.01:19
dah85YankDownUnder: if you want to be extra aussie, try MATE desktop ;)01:19
YankDownUnderXFce - it's old, it's highly configurable, it's SUPPORTED BIGTIME, it's cool, it will make you toast in the morning and make you coffee, and it's supported. Did I say it was supported?01:20

implitehow do i kill my xserver? what is the pid?01:41
implite!kill01:42
ubottuThe linux terminal or command-line interface is very powerful. In Unity or GNOME, search the dash for "terminal" and press ENTER. Other desktops: Applications -> System Tools -> Terminal (MATE), K-menu -> System -> Konsole (KDE), or Menu -> Accessories -> LXTerminal (LXDE). Guide: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UsingTheTerminal01:42
implitecan anyone help me with that?01:44
oerheksimplite, why would you need to kill xserver?01:44
ritztechsooo question... i have a hosting provider that gave me a VM but they wont let me download the vm or snapshot01:45
oerheksgo to tty2; sudo lightdm stop01:45
ritztechis there a way to like convert to an offline vm again01:45
impliteI want to kill it so i can start another one manually01:45
impliteusing xinit01:45
ritztechlike snapshot the whole Current vm to another vmdk kinda thing (of course i would see if my Vm had double the HD space01:45
jk0neimplite: what oerheks said.  If you just kill it, it will restart.01:46
jk0nekk4ewt: indeed.01:46
jk0neAlabama was the same way.01:46
oerhekskk4ewt, jk0ne please stay ontopic, chitchat in #ubuntu-offtopic please01:46
jk0neritztech: so you have access to the running machine, but not the vmdk?01:48
Bashing-omimplite: systemd ? moght try ' sudo systemctl set-default multi-user.target ' .01:49
ritztechya01:50

ritztechlol01:50
oerheksBashing-om +1 that would boot into tty201:50
ritztechi can install anything01:50
ritztechbut not the vm infra01:50
ritztechi need to take some vms offline but i like to kinda repackage it all and so i can move them offsite01:50
oerheksritztech, ask your vm vendor, there must be an adminpanel01:51
ritztechvmware01:51
ritztechthey wont let me get access to the vmware its like a fort knox (they feel that they arent allowed to supply the vmdk to us)01:52
oerheksritztech, so why do you tink we can help, cloning a running vm ?01:53
ritztechhmmm maybe use mondorescue but not sure if i can save it as like a ova01:53
ritztechwell i did something similar for a winbox years ago and i did like a p2v but this is diff more like a v2v01:53
ritztechlol01:53
ritztechi didnt feel like rebuilding like postgres configs and such01:53
jk0neritztech: if you can't access the panel, or the host system, I don't know of any 'proper' ways... You could get crafty with dd of the virtual disk from inside the vm over piped into ssh... but it would be... less than optimal.01:54
ritztechhmm intersting02:10
ritztechhttp://vmutils.blogspot.com/2013/09/fwd-virtualizing-physical-linux-without.html02:10
jk0neritztech: yes.  Basically that.02:11
ritztechhaha nc over ssh hehe02:11
ritztechmight as well try it out02:11
jk0neyou can also run it through gzip, which would cut the transfer time down.02:12
jk0neie: drop: 'gzip -c -' before nc.  then you can gunzip it on the other side.02:16
waltmanSetting up network printing and Airprint for my usb printer was dirt simple in 17.04. I can finally print from my iOS devices!02:17
oerhekswaltman, yes, cups has improved02:19
oerheks.. like 100%02:19
sorin-mihaiwhat options are there to have ssh run inside a 'live cd' on a remote server? i have access to a server over ssh now, but i want to make some changes to the disks that can't be done while running and i have no one to boot on a live cd, and the server is on the other side of the world.02:20
waltmanDebian never recognized my printer without a special proprietary driver, and then it would break every time cups updated.02:20
oerhekssorin-mihai, that would take a custom iso, there is no ssh installed02:22
IeuanIf I'm trying to install an old deb that requires libtiff4, what's the easiest solution to actually install the blumming thing?02:23
IeuanInstalling libtiff4 from an old release of ubuntu, or?02:23
bazhangIeuan, why an old deb02:24
Ieuanbazhang, because it's a proprietary program I bought years ago02:24
bazhangwhich one02:24
IeuanThat's not really what I was asking :\02:24
bazhangIeuan, how is that ubuntu related then02:25

marvin2bazhang yes but thanks02:26
bazhangIeuan, installing an old one on a supported release? not really02:26

oerheksIeuan, you didn't mention the -5 version02:27
Ieuanoerheks, hmm?02:27
IeuanI don't follow02:27
oerheksanyway, we don't support old debs on newer ubuntu versions, figure it out02:28

IeuanWell, many thanks for the help.02:29
trompstompI am trying to understand the real difference between the folder /opt/ and /usr/local/bin. Which directory is the proper place to install robomongo and/or postman? I believe since I am not doig a build and make I should put them in /opt. Is this correct?02:32
bazhang!info postman02:33
ubottuPackage postman does not exist in zesty02:33
oerhekstrompstomp, yes, 'own builds' are suggested to put in opt02:33
trompstompoerheks, so If I were to compile from source then I should put it in /usr/local correct?02:34
oerhekstrompstomp, the good build would direct to those proper folders, yes. if not, use /opt/02:35
trompstompoerheks, thanks.02:37
IeuanIf anyone gets a similar issue to me in future, ‘sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise universe main"‘ provides a solution :)02:37
bazhangIeuan, what version are you adding that to02:38
Ieuanbazhang, 14.0402:39
IeuanWhy?02:39
bazhangIeuan, trusty?02:39
oerheksIeuan, good luck with that ...02:39
bazhangIeuan, adding a different version repo is not only a very bad idea, but also never a solution on offer here02:40
IeuanAny particular reason for that?02:41
bazhangyes02:41
IeuanWhich is?02:41
bazhangIeuan, are you adding debian repos to that as well?02:41
Ieuanbazhang, nah02:42
bazhang!precise02:42
ubottuUbuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin) is a currently-supported !LTS release of Ubuntu.  Download http://releases.ubuntu.com/12.04/ - Release Info: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes/120402:42
IeuanHowever, adding that repo, installing the packages, and removing the repo hasn't noticably damaged anything yet...02:42
oerheksIeuan, it is unsupported, you surely run into issues, and we are not helping fixing them. but go ahaed, have fun, but do not suggest it is a solution to a non-problem02:42
IeuanBeing unable to install old-packages is clearly not a non-problem to many people02:43
IeuanThe old repo was only added to install two packages, and removed afterwards...02:43
IeuanNot really sure I see the issue02:43
latemusdebian is disentegrating02:43
bazhangIeuan, never suggest that here, it;s not a solution02:43
* latemus grabs papcarn02:43
Ieuanbazhang, what would you propose instead? I go directly to those libraries websites and manually copy the lib into /usr/lib? >.>02:44
IeuanI guess that would work too tbf02:44
oerheksIeuan, the only valid solution is to build the dependencies yourself.02:45
bazhangIeuan, if you really wanted support you would give us more info on this 'proprietray app'02:45
Ieuanoerheks, that's better than adding an old repo for ~5 minutes?02:45
oerheksIeuan, why should i answer that02:47
Ieuanoerheks, you don't have to, more asking out of intellectual curiosity than anything else :)02:47
oerheksIeuan, read back, answers are given.02:48
Ieuanoerheks, nothing more than it being a very bad idea, and never a solution on offer02:48
bazhangIeuan, it's not a proper solution, not supported here, lets get back on topic02:49
Ieuanbazhang, so essentially, it doesn't cause any harm...02:50
IeuanI'm not leaving the repo added permanently, not overwriting any current packages that way...02:50
bazhangIeuan, please just lets get back on topic02:50
Ieuanbazhang, the topic is adding an old repo, no?02:50
IeuanSo asking about potential damage that may have caused is perfectly on topic.02:51
bazhangIeuan, yes, not supported here. that means offtopic02:51
oerheksLoLz, he keeps trying02:51
IeuanThanks again for being very helpful.02:52
bazhangnp02:52
IeuanI would note however, that sometimes a little pragmatism is superior to a little purity when someone is trying to fix a problem ;)02:54
marvin2is it normal that I am getting these errors when I run nautilus from terminal? there are four of them, this is just the first one. (nautilus:53440): GLib-GIO-CRITICAL **: g_dbus_interface_skeleton_unexport: assertion 'interface_->priv->connections != NULL' failed03:00

oerheksmarvin2, yes, those are warnings, when you run a gtk gui program from terminal03:01
oerhekspretty normal, annoying but harmless03:02
marvin2ok, thought there was something wrong with my configuration03:03
MoPacAfter upgrading to 17.04, I installed gnome-shell to try it out, and that brings in the Wayland session as well. Now I see two problems that may be one (a) Gnome Wayland never starts from lightdm, ttys become unusable. (b) if gdm3 made default, it never loads on startup or launches from a tty03:03
MoPacIs there something obvious I should check on?03:03
oerheksclean solution is to install nautilus-admin, so you have 'open as admin' in context menu03:03
oerheks!info nautilus-admin03:04

alexubuntupd2 yes!03:09
bazhangalexubuntu, live and persistnet are two very differing things03:09
alexubuntupd2, You have it exactly.03:09
pd2copy the files, and write a script that chown everything and replace root/whatever with the new username. that might work - or not. better to set them up with the new user again and copy relevant parts from relevant config files from the root home03:10
alexubuntubazhang, Yes, you can have a live USB with persistence.  I was able to do it.   But that's not really the important part.  I'm trying to transfer program settings that were set under root03:10

ThetaOrionisProblem is, there's a lot of overheating, and battery drains quickly. So, is there any way I can disable the Radeon GPU and use Intel HD instead? I don't wanna fall back to Windows, but looks like I've got little choice...07:00
Bashing-omThetaOrionis: switcheroo ? https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HybridGraphics .07:03
ThetaOrionisAh! Quite interesting, and looks like it's worth a shot. Thanks Bashing-om, I'm trying it now. :)07:05
Bashing-omThetaOrionis: Let us know how it works out, as I do not know in 16.10/systemd .07:06
ThetaOrionisSure. However, I'm still searching a bit, to see whether something like AMDGPU-PRO will work with my system or not. But looks like that's a dead end, and I will have to rely on Switcheroo instead.07:07
ThetaOrionisAcpi-call looks promising (and easier) too, and I don't really need heavy GPU.07:09

ThetaOrionisAnd I tried acpi call, can't get it work. All these docs look Greek to me, to be honest.07:18

BernhardPosseltcurl -sS https://deb.nodesource.com/gpgkey/nodesource.gpg.key | sudo apt-key add -12:37
BernhardPosseltecho "deb https://deb.nodesource.com/node_7.x xenial main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/nodesource.list12:37

BernhardPosseltyeats: nope :)12:37
BernhardPosseltstill on 4.x12:37
BernhardPosseltmy guess is that the current package has a higher priority12:38
yeatsBernhardPosselt: what is the output of 'apt-cache showpkg nodejs' (or whatever the actual package is you're trying to upgrade)?12:38
BernhardPosseltyeats: https://dpaste.de/aGw612:39

BernhardPosseltinstead of 712:42
BernhardPosseltthe external repo is fetched after the built in ones btw12:42
BernhardPosseltxenial, xenial-security, xenial-updates appear before the external repo12:43
yeatsBernhardPosselt: yeah, it fetches ones in /etc/apt/sources.list before the ones in sources.list.d12:43
ducasseubuntor_: ah, run 'sudo update-initramfs -k all -u'. didn't think of that :)12:45
yeatsBernhardPosselt: ok, could you please paste in the output of 'sudo apt update'?12:46

ducasseubuntor_: that should be it, it regenerates the initramfs to include the new blacklisted modules list. that is where it gets loaded in the first place.12:49
BernhardPosseltcurl -sS https://deb.nodesource.com/gpgkey/nodesource.gpg.key | sudo apt-key add -12:49

brunch875socialevil, have you tried pressing the escape key as it boots?15:57
Sparrow_socialevil, what all have you installed or added from outside repos15:57
brunch875that removes the splash and lets you see what's going on15:57
socialevilbrunch875, when exactly should i press it? at the beginning loads like normal.. and then i see the purple screen for 2 minutes, should i press it then? Sparrow_ well it does that from the beginning, but just now i address the problem15:59

thetamaxOerheks: I had to do a hard power down, and now when I boot, I get the error above + "unaligned pointer" and a hex string16:03

brunch875did you change any grub settings?16:04
socialevilbrunch875, no, its the screen with the logo, then it just goes to purple screen for ~2 minutes and then i see the login screen16:04

krainwoops, wrong paste... that's no good any more...18:36
Ben64heh18:36
Ben64and put whatever it is into a pastebin18:36
krainok18:36
yeatsmarvin2: that's not in your PATH by default, but you can also append custom dirs to your PATH in ~/.bashrc and friends18:36
Ben64~/bin is in path by default18:37
yeatsBen64: but not ~/.local/bin18:37
Ben64ah ok18:37
marvin2yeats I don't recall ever setting additional paths18:38
marvin2anyway, if I want to override emacs command with my sh script that calls emacs program, where should it go?18:39
tonythas anyone succesfully installed a newer nvidia driver on 17.04?18:39
yeatsmarvin2: add 'export PATH=/your/custom/path:$PATH' to ~/bashrc, then '. ~/.bashrc' (or just put it in ~/bin)18:39
Ben64tonyt: it's best to describe your issue rather than ask if "anyone _____ ?"18:39
yeatsit will check ~/bin before the others18:39
tonytok sec18:39
marvin2yeats but why not /usr/local/bin? I was putting all my scripts there18:40
marvin2if I put it in ~/bin then root can't call those commands?18:40
yeatsmarvin2: did you read the stackexchange link? that should clarify18:40
marvin2i glanced at it, i'll read it more thoroughly18:40
yeatsmarvin2: and btw, these are all just conventions, in the end you can put it where you want18:41
marvin2i know18:41
tonythas anyone seen this https://1drv.ms/i/s!Aqm_HiYIEo4Ej2OaNH_2pLsxs2XK when trying to install a nvidia driver on 17.04?18:41
ioriamarvin2, usually ~/bin it 's for the single user, /usr/local/bin is system wide18:41
marvin2i have a single user18:42
tonytand is their a way around that error(s)?18:42
marvin2and root18:42
Ben64tonyt: not really recommended or supported here to install nvidia drivers manually18:42
marvin2actually with sudo I guess that single user is root? I did notice that I can't login as root18:42
Ben64marvin2: only root is root18:42
ioriamarvin2,  can you paste    echo $PATH ?18:42
tonytben whats bad about installing manually? thats the only way to get true 3d support18:43
Ben64tonyt: that is false18:43
yeatstonyt: there should be an nvidia install log somewhere (probably in the dir where you ran the script) - but yeah, better to install from the repos18:43
marvin2ioria /home/marvin/bin:/home/marvin/.local/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games:/usr/local/games:/snap/bin18:43
tonytben using what comes with ubnutu it results in video tearing18:43
Ben64look into "vsync"18:43
tonyti look in the log. it has no solution18:44
tonytk18:44
marvin2path is set to ~/bin, but that directory does not exist out of the box18:44
tonytwhat comes with ubuntu has no vsync option18:44
ioriamarvin2,  it's ok, you can put your script there (/home/marvin/bin)18:44
ioriamarvin2,  true18:44
marvin2ioria can I run those scripts as sudo?18:44
tonytthats why you need to install nvidia's driver manually18:44
marvin2in ~/bin18:44
Ben64tonyt: that is false as well18:44
yeatstonyt: run nvidia-settings (it does come with the repo version)18:45
tonytben where is the option?18:45
tonytk18:45
ioriamarvin2,  you should have created it, is some way18:45
ioria*in18:45
tonytwhen you say repo version ben you happen to know the name of the file?18:45
Ben64what do you mean file18:45
tonytis it just nvidia-settings?18:46
Ben64that's the name of the settings executable18:46
krainFIgured out my issue, I was using /.ssh/authorized_keys as a directory18:46
ioriamarvin2,  i never run script as sudo, if i can't help it18:46
marvin2yeah that is an issue. I just put a script in /home/marvin/bin/, and I can't run them as sudo18:46
tonytk18:46
krainI now have an authorized_keys file... thanks to the help guys18:47
Ben64marvin2: best to avoid using sudo18:47
tonytno option in the nvidia-settings for vsync18:47
Ben64tonyt: sure there is18:47
marvin2Ben64 I don't when I need to. but some scripts need sudo. and I'm not sure I like having two paths for my script18:48
marvin2when I don't need to*18:48
Ben64marvin2: what scripts need sudo18:48
tonytben no there isnt.18:48
tonytim not seeing it18:48
Ben64tonyt: what is the actual issue you're experiencing18:48
tonytben look at the screen shot i posted ealrier please18:48
marvin2Ben64 scripts that run commands that need sudo. or scripts that modify files that need sudo to be modified18:48
Ben64tonyt: the one where you're trying to install nvidia manually?18:49
tonyt https://1drv.ms/i/s!Aqm_HiYIEo4Ej2OaNH_2pLsxs2XK18:49
tonytya18:49
Ben64tonyt: that is not supported here18:49
tonytis it supported anywheres?18:49
Ben64marvin2: sounds sketchy18:49
Ben64tonyt: only the repository version is supported here18:49
tonytk18:49
Ben64so if you want to actually explain your issue maybe it can get fixed18:50
marvin2Ben64 I'm not sure why it would be sketchy to automate commands that need sudo18:50
Ben64marvin2: because the number of things that need sudo regularly is pretty much 018:50
marvin2it doesn't need to be used regularly18:50
ioriamarvin2, so you have a script in ~/bin that requires sudo ?18:51
marvin2anyway didn't mean to turn this into an argument18:51
Ben64just trying to help, you seem like  you might not know the best practices18:52
marvin2ioria not right now, but at some point I may want to run some scripts as sudo18:52
w9qbjThe way I run 'sudo ~/bin' commands is to put the sudo in the .sh file  It still will ask for the password18:53
w9qbjThe script doesn't need the sudo, but the internal commands to, and I don't have to remember to sudo18:54
marvin2w9qbj that is interesting. so sudo is calling in a yourscript, not sudo yourscript18:54
marvin2is called*18:54
=== Rochvellon is now known as Osterroch
w9qbjmarvin2: yes.18:54
ioriamarvin2,  if you run a script with sudo from there you 'll probably  get 'sudo - command not found'.... so you may need to give it the full path ..   sudo bin/myscript.sh   but not good practice18:54
* freddyP goes for dinner18:55
marvin2i already created a bunch of scripts in usr/local/bin as sudo. if I move them to ~/bin will I still need root rights to edit them?18:55
marvin2since root created them18:56
w9qbjmarvin2: or chown them (as root) maybe even to mv them18:57
marvin2sudo chown marvin /usr/local/bin/* ?18:59
Ben64nooo18:59
marvin2heh18:59
marvin2only my scripts are there18:59
Ben64man you gotta stop using sudo so much19:00
marvin2I created those files under sudo, after moving them to /home/marvin/bin I wasn't able to edit them without sudo19:00
Ben64right19:00
marvin2just tried19:00
Ben64so sudo chown marvin /home/marvin/bin/*19:01
marvin2neat19:01
arch92try chown -R marvin:marvin /home/marvin/bin/19:02
marvin2I already did it without -R19:02
marvin2and with marvin:marvin19:02
marvin2and without marvin:marvin19:02
marvin2-R is recursive, marvin:marvin is marvin user, marvin group?19:03
marvin2what is group?19:03
arch92yes, marvin is user19:04
arch92so if you typing syntax above you will have granted to access file into directory19:05
arch92hmm.. tell me when I was wrong19:06
marvin2ls19:06
marvin2I kind of like this, not having to call sudo every time I want to edit a script19:07
arch92oh, I almost forget about edit a script19:07
maarhartHow to set the default window manager from the terminal? latest ubuntu19:08
arch92type this chmod 755 /path/your/file, file can you change directory19:08
maarhartin which file is this specified?19:09
arch92like this chmod 755 /pat/your/directory19:09
marvin2arch92 who was that for?19:09
uL4m0Gnewb linux user here, what anyone recommends, should I just do a new installation of ubuntu 17.04 or upgrade ?19:10
wedgieno reason not to try upgrading. that usually goes quite smoothly in my experience19:11
arch92marvin: you can type granted access on single command: chown -R marvin:marvin /path/your/directory && chmod 755 /path/your/directory19:11
wedgiethough if you're nervous, wait a month or two. by then any kinks should have been worked out19:11
uL4m0Gwedgie do you know how i can upgrade from 16.04 to 17.04?19:11
wedgie!upgrade19:12
ubottuFor upgrading, see the instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UpgradeNotes - see also http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/upgrade19:12
marvin2arch92 what does chmod 755 do?19:12
lirammrhi19:12
lirammrkmail is like 60MB to download19:13
lirammrhow do I identify that when any email comes?, it should generate an alarm sound??19:13
arch92chmod 755 give your access to edit file into directory without permission root19:13
lirammrI can't watch all emails, and my email is web based and is grpahical too19:13
arch92if you want upgrade, please don't type apt-get upgrade but apt-get dist-upgrade19:14
arch92to details you can type into terminal man apt-get19:14
marvin2arch92 hmm, I seem to be able to do that with just chown19:14
arch92marvin: can you access now your file or script without root?19:15
marvin2arch92 yes I modified it without sudo19:15
arch92yep, that's true19:15
ClydeSlimsWhich ubuntu installation is good for my graphics card to utilize its performance properly to max potential? AMD Radeon HD 7700HD.19:17
arch92ClydeSlims try read this http://tutorialforlinux.com/2017/03/02/how-to-install-ati-radeon-hd-7700-hd-7800-driver-for-ubuntu-16-04-xenial-lts/19:19
arch92ClydeSlims official amd available graphics card your needed for linux http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/linux19:21
ioriaClydeSlims, what is Verde ?  lspci -k | grep VGA -A 219:22
ClydeSlimsarch92, I remember when I installed amdgpupro before and went to "Software & Updates", the graphics card driver read as "Unknown".19:25
ioriaClydeSlims, can you paste   lspci -k | grep VGA -A 2  ?19:26
jan1k19:27
basil1xMy cache went mad and filled my drive.  I have deleted the offending files.  Any thoughts on stopping this happening again in another year?19:27
ClydeSlimsioria, no haha I uninstalled ubuntu 16.04. I recall someone said they removed something important from it for my graphics card.19:27
ClydeSlimsWas hoping there'd be another ubuntu version I could use that best suits my card.19:28
ioriaClydeSlims, if your card is verde it is supported by radeon in xenial and above19:28
ioriaClydeSlims, but not by the AMD-Radeon-GPU-PRO-Linux-Beta ... maybe you're talking about the fgrlx in trusty19:29
lingos?19:29
ClydeSlimsNot sure what you mean by verde19:29
ClydeSlimsIt's an AMD Radeon 7700 HD.19:29
ioriaClydeSlims, yes, usually it has also a common 'name'19:30
uL4m0Gwegie, is there anyway to make my ubuntu, upgrade from 16.04 to 17.04? when I run software updater its telling me it wants to upgrade from 16.04 to 16.1019:31
basil1x7700HD is 'Southern Islands', if that helps.19:31
ioriauL4m0G, you need to go to 16.10, but if you are on xenial it's set to 'lts', so you don't get anything19:31
ClydeSlimsOh cape verde.19:31
ioriaright19:31
ClydeSlimsioria, well I mean I'm just looking for a driver that will best suit my card for maximum performance. AMDGPUPro seems to be the only official driver out there for 16.04LTS, yet it shows up as "Unknown" when I install it.19:32
ClydeSlimsOr I don't think it shows up at all, because I think the "unknown" driver is the one that came with ubuntu?19:32
ClydeSlimsThere's only 1 driver that shows up and it's that one in "Software and Updats19:33
ioriaClydeSlims, but not by the AMD-Radeon-GPU-PRO-Linux-Beta ... maybe you're talking about the fgrlx in trusty19:33
ClydeSlimsI was in 16.04LTS19:33
ClydeSlimsNot 1419:33
ioriauL4m0G,  grep Prompt /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades19:34
ClydeSlimsI think fgrlx isn't supported anymore19:34
ioriaClydeSlims,  in trusty, yes until 201919:34
uL4m0Gioria, too late, i already click "upgrade" to 16.1019:34
ClydeSlimsioria, so I should install ubuntu trusty then?19:34
uL4m0G:>19:34
ioriauL4m0G,  ok :þ19:34
ioriaClydeSlims,  as i said, your card it's supported by the open sopurce driver in xenial .... but i don't know you needs19:35
ClydeSlimsioria, okay so say it's supported then. The open source driver in xenial AMD calls "AMDGPU Pro". I installed that. But the only driver that shows up in "Software & Updates" is "Unknown". Shouldn't there be two? "Unknown" and "AMD GPU Pro" ?19:36
ClydeSlimsOr is it not possible to answer without running that command you asked for before19:36
ioriaClydeSlims,  what ubuntu are you on now ?19:37
ClydeSlimsioria, Windows right now. Waiting to see which ubuntu is good for me to install for my graphics card.19:37
ClydeSlimsI guess trusty is the answer.19:37
ioriaClydeSlims,  i see... yes, you can try both :þ and see ...19:38
ClydeSlimsok.19:38
c0mradeI've just inserted an Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS DVD into my server and I have many installation options, one of them is Install Ubuntu Server with HWE kernel19:45
c0mradeWhat does that mean?19:45
kostkon!hwe19:45
ubottuThe Ubuntu LTS enablement stacks provide newer kernel and X support for existing LTS releases, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack19:45
tehmalHi19:45
tehmalCannot install Ubuntu 17.0419:45
c0mradeOkay, I still didn't get it.19:46
tehmalhttps://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/4f6522c299be01bb9051aac29f9490fa03d7e46afd543308c421172a95e7c289.png19:46
ioriac0mrade, i don't rememember that option, but in xenial should mean that it will install the yakkety kernel19:46
tehmalany ideas?19:46
c0mradeSo what's the difference? How would it differ to me? Why would I choose that option over the standard "Install Ubuntu Server" option?19:47
ioriac0mrade, xenial 4.4 ; yakkety 4.819:47
c0mradeWhy would ubuntu provide you that option of either installing with latest kernel or an older one?19:47
ioriac0mrade,  are you installing the server edition of xenial ?19:48
c0mradeShouldn't you just install it right away? There's something to it...19:48
c0mradeIt's Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS 64bit amd and it's the server edition.19:48
ioriac0mrade,  i'd say, stay with 4.4 ...19:49
c0mradeI don't get it though.19:50
ioriac0mrade,  you can always upgrade later19:50
c0mradeWhy is there this option.19:50
ioriac0mrade,  i don't know19:50
c0mradeBut why not use it straight away.19:50
c0mradeThat's what am trying to know.19:50
BluesKajtehmal:  check your installation partition19:50
ioriac0mrade, oh right 14.04.02 ...19:51
tehmalBluesKaj: is correct /dev/sda119:51
ioriac0mrade, 14.04.02 comes with yakkety19:51
tehmal16.05 installs correctly19:51
tehmal0419:51
ioriac0mrade, 16.04.02, i  mean19:52
marvin2I am in some corner situation where "prog &" doesn't work, and I need "tobackground prog" equivalent. is there such a thing?19:52
ioriac0mrade, you want 16.04 not 16.04.0219:52
c0mradeI am installing 16.04.219:53
ikoniamarvin2: I think someone gave you the best answer in ##linux19:53
c0mradeI get the point now after googling...19:53
c0mradeUbuntu will offer at least two kernels: the General Availability (GA) kernel, i.e. the most stable kernel, which does not get updated to point releases; and the Hardware Enablement (HWE) kernel, i.e. the most recent kernel released.19:53
ikoniamarvin2: it's not how emacs_client works19:53
c0mradeThe HWE uses a kernel version which is not the current stable one...19:53
c0mradeI'll use the normal option thanks.19:53
ioriac0mrade, 4.4 right19:54
marvin2ikonia I would prefer not to continue that discussion in here as well19:54

zikhello. i have a problem with an ubuntu installation20:13
maarhartPlease help me go back to the login screen. Startx --> unity works. But I can't get to the login screen.20:13
ikoniawhy are you running startx20:13
ikoniait should boot the greeter when you start the machine20:13
MonkeyDustzik  let's hear it, in one line20:13
zikwhenever i reboot, the speakers make a loud exploding sound20:13
ziksystem is Intel NUC. didnt have that problem with windows20:13
zikfresh 17.04 install20:14
maarhartikonia: I'm not getting the greeter.20:14
ikoniamaarhart: what is happening20:14
maarhartI think nothing. But I can get to the tty's. Let me reboot and check20:15
maarhartikonia: give me a sec20:16
zikyou there monkeydust?20:16
SummerRainIn my desktop theres an icon called : "Reserved by the system", its a hard disk icon.20:17
SummerRaini cant remove it20:17
SummerRainhow can i do it ?20:17
maarhartikonia: Btw, I also have gdm3. But i have dpkg-reconfigured it so lightdm starts20:17
maarhartikonia: I get all the text... e.g. mounted Mount unit for core.20:18
SummerRainno one ?20:18
maarhartikonia: I also get "ERROR @wl_notify_scan_status :"20:19
YankDownUndermaarhart: Have you tried "sudo service lightdm restart" => that should take you to tty7 (graphical) with a login screen...20:19
MonkeyDustSummerRain  repeat your question every 10 minutes or so, until someone enters who can help20:19
maarhartYankDownUnder: I think so,yes20:19
ikoniamaarhart: look at the xorg logs20:20
maarhartWhere are they?20:20
YankDownUndermaarhart: I'll assume you're trying it NOW, right?20:20
maarhartYep.20:20
SummerRainIn my desktop theres an icon called : "Reserved by the system", its a hard disk icon. i cant remove it...20:21
maarhartYankDownUnder: I just go back to that text screen with the mounted stuff and that error I mentioned20:21
ikoniamaarhart: look at the xorg logs20:21
YankDownUndermaarhart: Then try hitting CTRL+ALT+F720:21
ikoniaclear them down, reboot and watch how it fails to start from the greeter20:21
maarhartYankDownUnder: nothing20:21
YankDownUndermaarhart: Then as ikonia just stated20:22
maarhartikonia: where are those?20:22
ikoniamaarhart: /var/log20:22
maarhartikonia: I remove all those xorg logs and reboot?20:23
SummerRainwhy ubuntu wont allow for you to remove desktop icons20:23
SummerRainseriously20:23
ikoniamaarhart: seems a good way to get a clear log20:23
SummerRaingonna have to format it to reinstall just because of this20:23
SummerRainpff20:23
YankDownUnderSummerRain: If the icon is called "System Reserved" - what does INTUITION tell you about that icon?20:23
SummerRaintells me that the icon came from the start menu20:24
SummerRainwhen i was trying to bring firefox icon instead20:24
maarhartikonia: okay. Please hold on. I'm rebooting20:24
YankDownUnderSummerRain: So obviously you made some type of mistake.20:24
SummerRainso blame me for ubuntu not being able to remove a shortcut icon20:24
SummerRainlol20:24
SummerRainblame the user.20:24
YankDownUnderSummerRain: We all make mistakes, I'm not blaming you - however, since you're being passive/agressive about it, why don't you go and install a nice fresh version of Windows?20:25
SummerRainmake me.20:26
ikoniaSummerRain: please calm down20:26
ikoniawe are here to help you if you can20:26
SummerRaini am calm20:26
SummerRainthe fanboy is just triggered.20:26
ikoniano20:26
ikoniaplease stop with comments such as "fan boy"20:27
ikoniaif you want a change to functionality log a bug20:27
freddyPsudo rm -rf / will remove a lot so using that syntax you can pretty much remove anything20:27
ikoniahowever keep in mind that the 18.04 version will drop untiy20:27
ikoniaplease ignore that command anyone20:27
SummerRainif you tell a user to install windows due to a critic, then you are obviously a fanboy20:27
maarhartikonia: okay, now there are no x logs20:27
ikoniamaarhart: then xorg is not set to start20:27
ikoniaso I suspect your greeter is not enabled at startup20:27
ikoniaSummerRain: no, thats not true but YankDownUnder's comment was also uncalled for20:28
maarhartIkonia: just to let you know, i still get the "ERROR @wl_notify_scan_status :"20:28
SummerRainHes just triggered cuz he never learned to use windows.20:29
ikoniamaarhart: where ?20:29
ikoniaSummerRain: ENOUGH now20:29
YankDownUnderikonia: Yes, my comment was. I apologise for that. I shan't remove my "ignore", however. Too old for kiddie stuff on a Sunday morning.20:29
ikoniaSummerRain: I'm pretty sure he can use windows, and I have no idea why that even matters if he could or couldn't20:29
ikoniaYankDownUnder: appreciated,20:29
nbastinDoes anyone know how to get 14.04 server to install using a serial console?20:29
SummerRainkiddie stuff. yeah right.20:29
nbastinI hacked up isolinux, but apparently insufficiently20:29
maarhartikonia: in the screen with the [    OK     ] lines20:30

ikoniamaarhart: I'd need more context, but from what you've said xorg isn't starting at all, which suggests to me your greeter isn't set to start at start up20:30
nbastinbekks: except that I have an iso, not a syslinux unetbootin image20:30
SummerRainGoing to leave, obviously this chat is filled with wannabe trolls. Internet warriors who have no life. If you are so stressed in a sunday, your lfie must SUCK20:30

blackbird1Hi20:31
bekksnbastin: well, that howro starts with an ISO as well.20:31
nbastinbekks: so I don't have syslinux.cfg, for one...I get to the stage where it tries to load the bootlogo from isolinux20:31
geirhazigford: too late, he rage quit20:31
maarhartIkonia https://imagebin.ca/v/3JC1FV7BTkQz20:32
nbastinbekks: sure, but it makes a live usb stick, which I can't feed to the machine20:32
blackbird1I installed opencv 3.2.0, but when I execute a python script i got this error: http://paste.ubuntu.com/24389546/20:33
nbastinbekks: http://www.fantaghost.com/ubuntu-server-10-10-headless-installation-via-serial-console is similar to what I did, just with an old version - I'm wondering if there are new problems because 14.04 started trying to use the framebuffer console20:33
YankDownUndermaarhart: So that is the screen you're currently staring at, yes?20:33
ikoniamaarhart: thats a disk being slow/failing ot mount20:33
ikonianbastin: that depended on the non-graphical installer20:33
ikonianbastin: thats no longer available20:33
maarhartikonia: Context is: upgraded to ubuntu 17.04. Installed gnome 3 based on the link provided here http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2017/04/things-to-do-after-installing-ubuntu-17-04, then tried logging to gnome on wayland. Nothing happened so I rebooted.20:33

ikonianbastin: how the alternative CD is no longer available with curses based installer,20:34
YankDownUndermaarhart: As ikonia stated...20:34
maarhartikonia: just one disk. It's a laptop20:35
nbastinikonia: I'm confused, I installed 14.04 earlier with the curses installer20:35
nbastinalthough perhaps the boot screen was not curses-based...hrmph20:35
nbastinbut the actual install was20:35
maarhartikonia: any suggestions?20:36
nbastinikonia: so you're saying there's basically no way to install server without video?20:36
ikonianbastin:you can use the unattended install20:36
ikonianbastin: I'd be interested in how you launched the curses based install20:37
nbastinikonia: ugh, I can't, because I can't guess the device names20:37
nbastinikonia: this is all so I can write a preseed file..20:37

SomelauwIn nautilus (or at least the default file browser), how can I add folders to that sidebar on the left?20:45
ikoniaright, and I've told you why maarhart20:45
ikonia(or at least why I think why)20:45
SomelauwI would expect to drag the folder there, but that doesn't work? Otherwise I would at least like to make a bookmark to that folder.20:46

RBoreal_FripperyHow can you autocomplete the location bar in nautilus? For example, you do CTRL+L to type, and then do ~/.con20:57
RBoreal_Fripperypressing TAB in terminal will complete this to ~/.conf20:57

RBoreal_Fripperyhow can you get this functionality there?20:57
urotkoynothing, it seems to be mounted but i can't write there20:57

urotkoyuhm, the place where i mounted it21:02
bekksurotkoy: Correct.21:02
urotkoyis in my regular user's home directory21:02
arch92blackbird1, try following this http://stackoverflow.com/questions/19164343/opencv-libopencv-core-so-2-4-cannot-open-shared-object-file-no-such-file-or21:02
bekksurotkoy: which doesnt mean you have user permissions on the drive mounted.21:02
gredjokonce somebody here suggested a pdf editor with no gui, it has to be started from the shell. It allows to increase/decrease/trim pdf files. Not page by page, but bulk (for 300 pages, for example) I forgot its name.21:02
bekksurotkoy: check with ls -lha21:03
urotkoyoh right, it says root root for that folder21:03
blackbird1arch92, the file "/etc/ld.so.conf.d/opencv.conf" doesn't exist21:03

ikoniamaarhart: ?21:08
ikoniamaarhart: the greeter is not starting....21:08
maarhartikonia: but maybe that doesn't help21:08
ikoniamaarhart: you need to look at the logs to see it trying to start and understand what's stopping it completing21:08
ikonialooking at old logs don't help, so clear them down to remove confusion21:08
maarhartikonia: does running startx help here?21:09
maarhartikonia: or x or xinit21:09
ikoniamaarhart: no21:10
ikoniait confuses things and adds no value21:10
maarhartikonia: okay, I will reboot and see if there is any .xsession-errors21:10
maarhartikonia: by the way, is it correct to look for the xsession errors in my home folder?21:11

ikoniamaarhart: ok, so that suggests its not even trying to start as I said at the very beginning21:16
ikoniamaarhart: so enable the greeter to be a boot time start up21:16
sinthetekas soon as rebooted for 16.04->16.10 upgrade, the noise started at the login screen. i immediate updated repos and began the 17.04 upgrade but the sound persists after the next update. it is emitted both through internal sound and through hdmi when I set it as primary output. anyone know of this issue?21:18
maarhartikonia: and how do you enable it? I can also start googling about it. Unfortunately I'm using a phone at the moment21:18

Are these 2 assumptions correct? 1. krop was automatically installed in the directory where all other deb files are installed. 2. I no longer need to keep the .deb file and if krop releases an update it will be downloaded automatically.21:27

marvin2using plain ubuntu 16.04. how can I let window manager allow emacs to handle M-F4 rather than handling it itself?23:30
edgy1gogeta: 1. it is NOT bcause of the DE. 2: i HATE mate because it is very slow an dlags. but thank you for helping :)23:31
edgy1btw gaim internet messenger is quite the IRC client :P23:31
implitei use hexchat23:32
gogetaedgy1, the slowness isnt mate its 16.04 slow mesa stack you can fix it with the oibf drivers23:32
edgy1litterally everything is slow and crashy, and it will never be as stable as authentic gnome 2. also I like edgyyyyyyyy :D23:32
gogetaedgy1, i thought that to unledd i put oibf on the netbook23:33
gogetauntill23:33

ramrebolto write a movie in a pendrive (for whats in a tv), its enogh to write the iso in the pendrive, or I need to burn otherwise (like the iso of ubuntu)?23:35
gogetaedgy1, the bottleneck in 16.04 is a very slow 2d/3d mesa stack23:35
edgy1yeah got it working :) thanks23:35
gogetaedgy1, oibs is like adding a turbo to 16.04 lol if your using open drivers23:37
gogetaoibf23:37
gogetaedgy1, https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/ubuntu/graphics-drivers23:37
edgy1so oibs would speed up my unity too?23:38
gogetaedgy1, if your using 16.04 and open drivers yes23:38
gogetaand 16.1023:38
edgy1is it on the xenial repositories?23:38
gogetaedgy1, that link has a ppa for xenial23:39
gogetaedgy1, you dont need the wine bits of course23:39
gogetaedgy1, just add the paa and run a upgrade23:40
edgy1oh ok23:40
gogetaedgy1, it will add the newer unbroken mesa stack23:40
gogetaedgy1, then reboot enjoy the fixed drivers23:41
tgm4883edgy1: to be clear, you aren't installing anything called oibaf. You're installing updated packages that were created by a third party named oibaf23:41
edgy1oh,,,,,,23:41
edgy1hmm23:41
gogetaedgy1, yes its just updated and optmised mesa23:41
daxwhich, notably, are not officially supported here23:41

edgy1oh hi finetundra23:47
gogetausage23:47
mears11At that point, I’ll be prompted to go into emergency mode or can press ctrl-d to continue booting.  If I do the latter, everything starts up fine.  I also have no issue booting into “run level 3”.  I’ve tried changing the order of mounts in /etc/fstab.  Previously, I was getting the error with /dev/mapper entries, so I switched to UUIDs, but it didn’t help23:47
FinetundraHello edgy123:48
