MKHey guys, I need to mount a windows Recovery partition to get at some files, but it seems Dolphin hides those completely by default. Is there a setting to make those visible in dolphin? "Show All Entries" doesn't00:00
clivejocan't see why it would hide them00:01
MKI assume to prevent people from breaking things; it's also hiding my dual boot's windows recovery partition (which I don't need to access)00:03
clivejoLinux doesn't usually do that, it tends to trust the user knows what they are doing!00:04
mattpalermoMK: I just checked mine, and yea, mine don't show in dolohin either. But I checked the partition manager, and the 'hidden' flag is set on both of those partitions00:04
clivejoare you able to see the other partitions on the disk?00:05
mattpalermoI'll see if unchecking that flag does anything.00:05
MKYes, and I was able to make a backup of the partition with KDE Partition Manager, it just won't let me mount it00:05
MKHm, it doesn't seem to have a hidden flag on it, lemme try setting and then removing that flag00:06
MKNothing :(00:11
mattpalermoBack. Can confirm. Unsetting those flags did nothing.00:13
MKHm, well can one of you help me mount it manually?00:26
MKah, I got it00:29
mattpalermoMK: How did you do it?00:30
MKjust made a folder and used sudo mount to mount the partition to it, it didn't complain00:31
MK(read-only, so I don't break anything :P)00:31
mattpalermoexcellent :) I just managed to do the same thing through the partition manager. Seems to work. Odd that dolphin can distinguish between the many different ntfs partitions.00:32
MKThere might be some hard-coded restriction on listing ntfs RECOVERY or WIN_RE labels00:32
mattpalermoPerhaps.00:33
mattpalermoclivejo: Ah, wifi just broke again. Seems like IPv6 didn't help.00:40
sakhdI change my keyboard layout with alt + shift. I press alt, then shift, and before I key up the shift it's already changed. The correct way is to trigger after I key up the last key. Ho can I change this behavior?01:37
sakhdin ubuntu it was ok01:38

schnoodlesSince upgrading to kubuntu 17.04 has anyone run into cursor graphic problems? When I hover over certain system elements in draws a box behind my cursor.06:19
valorieschnoodles: in nvidia?06:34
valorieI noticed it about 10 days ago06:35
valoriebut I've been using zesty for many months, so it's not that06:35
valorieand it didn't happen when I moved from nouveau to the blob06:36
valoriebut later06:36
steve-_-[m]hi all. is there some sort of "about" screen in kubuntu? discover shows installed items but those seem to be packages? I'd like to be able to loot at some info window telling me which kubuntu version is currently installed06:38
mattpalermoGood question steve. If you look at the /etc/apt/sources.list file it will show you the 'software repositories' you are tracking. I think this is really what determines your 'version'.06:41
steve-_-[m]so that would be in konsole?06:42
steve-_-[m]mattpalermo:06:42
mattpalermoActually, you could see this information in the Software Center by going into 'Settings'. Don't need to go into the terminal06:44
steve-_-[m]mattpalermo: "software center" is that "discover"?06:45
mattpalermoyea06:45
steve-_-[m]mattpalermo: I am in there. where are the settings? I don#t see any "settings" item. do you mean "configure sources"? http://imgur.com/a/404wH06:47
mattpalermoYou'll see lines that look similar to: "deb http://au.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ zesty-updates main restricted"06:47
valoriesteve-_-[m]: just type about in krunner06:48
mattpalermoI think we have different versions of Discover installed. I'm not familiar with that interface.06:48
valoriekrunner is alt and space06:48
valorieI mean alt key and space key06:49
mattpalermovalorie: That would be alot simpler :P06:49
steve-_-[m]valorie: that worked so 16.10 installed. it brought up an "About System" dialog. great. should I be able to find that about item from within the system settings as well?06:49
mattpalermoSorry06:49
valorieif you want just plasma version, it's `plasmashell --version` in the commandline06:50
steve-_-[m]no overall about is great06:50
valoriewell, every KDE application has help > about06:50
valoriewell, system settings is about KDE settings06:51
valorienot much to do about Kubuntu, which is a way of providing that software06:51
steve-_-[m]valorie: so if I want to update to kubuntu 17.04 how would I go about doing that?06:52
valoriethe simplest way is in the commandline06:52
valorieare you interested in doing it that way?06:52
valoriebut it can be done in Muon or Discover as well06:53
steve-_-[m]valorie: if it is the easiest way, ok. I always wonder why there is no easy UI for stuff like that. but maybe I am expecting the wrong thing from a linux distro then? ah ok, I guess then I'd prefere Discover. from what I understood Muon would be replaced by Discover.06:53
valoriewell, Muon is a package manager06:54
valorieDiscover is a software store06:54
valorieso they are different sorts of guis06:54
valoriepersonally, I do not like software stores06:55
valoriebut it's a matter of taste06:55
steve-_-[m]valorie:  I can see why that would be. I'd be interested in learning about the non CLI way which kubuntu things would be the way non-expert end users would take as a route.06:55
steve-_-[m]*thinks06:56
valoriesure, I sometimes do it that way, to see how it goes06:57
valoriesteve-_-[m]: here is a step by step: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ZestyUpgrades/Kubuntu06:57
valoriethe important part is to do upgrades in 16.10 first06:58
valoriebefore beginning the 17.04 upgrade06:58
steve-_-[m]valorie: yeah I checked for updated in discover and installed everything available. funnily enough this guide falls back to CLI pretty quickly06:59
valorieit only "falls back" if there is a problem07:00
mattpalermoI think the guide says that the GUI should offer you a way to upgrade.07:00
valoriekrunner doesn't count as a commandline07:00
valorieit should, yes07:00
steve-_-[m]I see no further updates in discover and still am on 16.10, so CLI seems now the next step I guess?07:01
valorieif there is nothing in that bottom left-hand box where updates show07:02
valorieyou can go to settings > more > check for updates07:02
steve-_-[m]ok CLI worked07:02
steve-_-[m]I am not sure, why this is not solvable via easy UI or a store (since one exists).07:03
valoriewell, Muon always works for me07:03
valorieDiscover seems a bit hit or miss07:03
valorieI tried out the Ubuntu Software Store and found it an unusable mess07:04
steve-_-[m]it does. hm, from an end user perspective such things are really hard with kubuntu or linux in gerneal07:04
valoriethe old Synaptic worked, but I like Muon better07:04
valoriewell, I'm no coder07:04
valoriebut I prefer the commandline when I know the commands I'm using07:05
steve-_-[m]choice is great, but telling a user to check out 4-5 update UI solutions of which 3 can be considered unreliable will mean "game over" for many end users07:05
valorieI used it in windows, and before that CP/M07:05
steve-_-[m]valorie: mattpalermo thanks for your help. I will keep trying this.07:05
steve-_-[m]maybe in 2025 we can have seamless updates (:07:06
valorieI left the Mac world because I don't like *only* point and click07:06
valoriethey are seamless for me!07:06
steve-_-[m]valorie: I get that, but for many people it is all they can do07:06
mattpalermoGood luck. Have you considered just doing a fresh install? That's always fun (when installing linux)07:06
valoriethe up-arrow in konsole is just about instant07:06
valoriemattpalermo: there are times when that is necessary07:07
valoriebut 16.10 > 17.04 should be easy-peasy07:07
steve-_-[m]valorie: konsole isn't always for end users. if I think about my parents, they would be lost fiddling with CLI, no chance.07:07
valorieno big changes07:07

ddm1How accessible is Kubuntu for blind Users?09:32
mattrpalermoddm1: Interesting question. I wonder if there are any dedicated ubuntu communities for this?09:46
ddm1I have read that Orca doesn't work with KDE.09:48
mattrpalermoAre you blind or somebody you know?09:49
ddm1I'm blind.09:49
mattrpalermoI would hope that the KDE team put as much effort into accessibilty as they did with the rest of the experience. Perhaps this link will help: https://accessibility.kde.org/09:53
mattrpalermoFrom that website, I found two applications. Jovie text to speech system and the Simon speech recognition program.09:55
ddm1But can i use Jovie as a Screenreader?09:56
mattrpalermo"Jovie KDE Text-to-Speech is a subsystem within the KDE desktop for conversion of text to audible speech. Jovie is currently under development and aims to become the standard subsystem for all KDE applications to provide speech output."09:59
ddm1But can I also use brltty under KDE for Braille Output?09:59
mattrpalermoBut if you are familiar with Orca, the wikipedia page claims that it works in KDE as well.09:59
mattrpalermoI'm not sure ddm1. From what I just read about it, it seems to not be strongly related to any one desktop so I think you should give it a go.10:07
mattrpalermoIt is available in the repository so it should be easy to install.10:08
ddm1But I want to install Kubuntu first, before installing the Orca and BRLTTY Software.10:09
mattrpalermoAhh. So Kubuntu needs to be accessible straight out of the box.10:10
ddm1Yes.10:11
