Spassseems like not only whisker menu is affected by that "screen edge" issue, here's Plank https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8qh4-wxxEZ7b3ZTZ0stb1VvdGM/view00:12
Spassmaybe it's a part of a bigger problem?00:12
ddaughtreyWelp can't figure out when I can't get my sound settings to recognize my devices built-in. Only shows HDMI and I'm not using that. Did get my bluetooth headphones to work so that's cool.00:22
newuser123Hi guys, I'm failry new to xubuntu and I hope you can help me. I just installed xubuntu and tried to create an archive in thunar (right click -> create archive) but I get follwoing error message: "Failed to create archive. No suitable archive manager found.". I don't understand why this is happening, since I see the archive manager in the whiskermenu. When I click on it, it open just fine..00:34

bonsaitreeIt turns out that there is a recent system update that is messing with the Wi-Fi link speed. I've tried many things and all of them lead to that conclusion.00:43
bazhangbonsaitree, why are you crossposting00:44
bazhangstick to one channel please00:44
bonsaitreebazhang:I did not know that it's considered bad behavior.00:44
bazhangvery00:44
bonsaitreebazhang:Okay then, i will know now :)00:45
newuser123Thanks for nothing!01:01
SpassI may have found another small bug related to the panel, Window Buttons plugin this time03:27
krytarikSpass: I suggest #xubuntu-devel from now on.03:28
Spasskrytarik: Sure, you're right.03:29
sorinello_flocculant, I must admit, despite the small border, the new terminal has some cool features07:14

bonsaitreeI will ask here also, since no one is answering on #ubuntu.12:52
bonsaitreeMy Wi-Fi link speed problem is still unresolved. I get the same speeds as i got before and as declared by my ISP when i am on Ethernet (on Linux) and when i am on both Wi-Fi and Ethernet on Windows. I was suspicious that the origin of the problem is because i have been removing certain bin files in /lib/firmware, but it turned out that it's not the case, since i did a fresh install and the problem is still here. I now suspect that it's a certain12:52
bonsaitreesystem update that messed things up. I have also tried logging with different kernel versions but there is no difference. Any ideas?12:52
pmjdebruijn"system update"12:53
pmjdebruijnwhen was it fine?12:53
pmjdebruijnfrom what to what did you update?12:53
pmjdebruijnbonsaitree: ?12:54
pmjdebruijnwhich version of xubuntu were you running when it was fine, which version are you running now?12:54
bonsaitrehBy "system update" i mean the update that is present in "Software", labeled "OS Updates". Since the problem is present on a fresh install too, it is very probable that it is related to a system update.12:57
bonsaitrehpmjdebruijn, ^12:57
pmjdebruijnbonsaitreh: I don't follow13:02
pmjdebruijnif the issue is still present on a fresh install, then it would seem to incidate it's not caused by a xubuntu update13:03
pmjdebruijnbut as I said, which exactly version were you using, and which are you using now?13:03
pmjdebruijn16.04 ? 16.04.1? 16.04.2 ? 16.10 ?13:03
pmjdebruijnwhat does 'uname -a' say?13:03
bonsaitrehpmjdebruijn, 4.4.0-72-generic13:21
pmjdebruijnbonsaitreh: and what were you running when it did work fine? 16.04 too?13:25
bonsaitrehpmjdebruijn, Yup13:25
pmjdebruijnyou could try installing a very old 16.04 kernel, like so: sudo apt-get install linux-image-4.4.0-22-generic13:26
pmjdebruijnand boot that13:26
pmjdebruijnafter a clean install, you might have ended up with something newer already (even without manually updating)13:26
pmjdebruijnespecially if you've used a 16.04.1 install iso13:27
bonsaitrehpmjdebruijn, The Live USB that i used for this install is the same that was used for the previous install, but let me check the .iso version13:27
pmjdebruijnyou should be able to revert the firmware files like so: sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-firmware=1.15713:28
bonsaitrehpmjdebruijn, 16.04.113:31
bonsaitrehpmjdebruijn, I will try with the kernel you suggested, brb13:31
bonsaitreepmjdebruijn, Installed the 4.4.0-22-generic, the system won't even find/show a wireless interface with 'iwconfig'. Tried 4.4.0-31-generic and 4.4.0-72-generic, the link is even slower with them.13:48
pmjdebruijnbonsaitree: even slower compared to what?14:01
pmjdebruijnalso are you sure there are no environmental factors14:02
pmjdebruijnnew neighbor wifi etc14:02
bonsaitreepmjdebruijn, My bad, the bandwidth is the same with -31 and -72. on -22 the wifi interface is not even shown. Btw that's what first came into my mind, but the bandwidth is excellent while using Windows, so it must be a software issue and not of electro-magnetic nature.14:04
pmjdebruijnI find it strange that it did perform good on ubuntu 16.04 in the past though14:06
pmjdebruijnbonsaitree: as far as the -22 kernel is concerned you might need to combine that with a linux-firmware downgrade14:06
pmjdebruijnrarely there are version interdependancies14:06
bonsaitreepmjdebruijn, How do i do that?14:08
bonsaitreepmjdebruijn, I wanted to try to install the 4.10 kernel with 16.04.2, someone told me on #ubuntu to use to following command: install linux-generic-hwe-16.04-edge , but i get this error: install: missing destination file operand after 'linux-generic-hwe-16.04-edge'14:10
pmjdebruijnsudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-firmware=1.157 for the older firwmare files14:10
pmjdebruijnand the edge stuff is experimental14:11
pmjdebruijnso I wouldn't add that14:11
bonsaitreepmjdebruijn, Okay then i will try with the older firmware14:11
pmjdebruijnsudo apt-get install --install-recommends linux-generic-hwe-16.04 xserver-xorg-hwe-16.04  for 4.814:11
pmjdebruijnhttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack14:11
pmjdebruijnfor the edge stuff you probably need to tell apt explicitly to use an experimental repo, never tried it myself14:12
bonsaitreepmjdebruijn, Okay won't experiment with that now, i installed the older firmware, should i try with -22 now?14:15
bonsaitreepmjdebruijn, Nope, still the same. How do i revert to the previous linux kernel?14:23
bonsaitreepmjdebruijn, 157.8?14:27
pmjdebruijnjust run updates14:28
pmjdebruijnyou meant firmware right?14:28
pmjdebruijnwhen you run updates, the latest version will be pulled in again14:28
pmjdebruijnsudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade14:28
bonsaitreepmjdebruijn, Yes14:28
bonsaitreethanks14:28
pmjdebruijnanyhow, then I'd try the HWE stack14:28
bonsaitreepmjdebruijn, Yes, i meant firmware not kernel, my bad14:30
bonsaitrehpmjdebruijn, You recommend this: apt-get install --install-recommends linux-generic-hwe-16.04 xserver-xorg-hwe-16.04 ?14:35
pmjdebruijnI just pasted the command14:37
pmjdebruijn16:1114:37
bonsaitrehpmjdebruijn, i see14:38
bonsaitrehpmjdebruijn, Okay, how do i upgrade to 16.10?14:40
bonsaitrehSorry for asking this (maybe basic) question, but there is no concrete answer on the net.14:40
pmjdebruijnfor major version i'd just reinstall14:41
pmjdebruijnit's often faster14:41
pmjdebruijnbut14:41
pmjdebruijnwith regard to hardware support installing the hwe stack would make 16.04 essentially the same as 16.1014:41
pmjdebruijnbonsaitreh: the page I linked, explains this14:42
bonsaitrehpmjdebruijn, So if i install the enablement stack i will get the 4.8 kernel, am i right? I am not sure if i can keep up with this whole new terminology :D14:47
pmjdebruijnyes14:47
pmjdebruijnit gets you the kernel and xorg from 16.10 effectively14:48
pmjdebruijnon 16.04 is a fairly clean and supported way14:48
pmjdebruijnthe 16.04.2 installation ISO have this onboard already by default14:48
bonsaitrehpmjdebruijn, But since i was installing with the .1 .iso i have to do it manually14:49
bonsaitrehi guess14:49
pmjdebruijnfor existing installs it's opt-in indeed14:49
bonsaitrehi will try it then14:50
bonsaitreepmjdebruijn, Nah, the same even after 4.8.0-46-generic15:32
bonsaitreeI really have no clue how to fix this.15:35
bonsaitreeIs it possible that a blackhat somehow capped my wi-fi card?15:52
XubuntuUser99Ever since I installed Xubuntu 16.04.2 I have this weird bug, whenever I try to create an archive from the right-click menu in Thunar I get the following error message:"Failed to create archive. No suitable archive manager found.". When I use the Extract Here option, it works fine, file-roller launches and extracts the archive without a hitch. It seems like file-roller is not linked to the Create Archive in the right click men19:05
XubuntuUser99Does anyone know how to re-associate file-roller to the Create Archive right click menu launcher? Or how I can just simply fix it?19:05
ddaughtreyHello23:34
ddaughtreyAnyone able to explain how to how to easily change my boot drive for xubuntu?23:45
