[00:12] seems like not only whisker menu is affected by that "screen edge" issue, here's Plank https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8qh4-wxxEZ7b3ZTZ0stb1VvdGM/view [00:12] maybe it's a part of a bigger problem? [00:22] Welp can't figure out when I can't get my sound settings to recognize my devices built-in. Only shows HDMI and I'm not using that. Did get my bluetooth headphones to work so that's cool. [00:34] Hi guys, I'm failry new to xubuntu and I hope you can help me. I just installed xubuntu and tried to create an archive in thunar (right click -> create archive) but I get follwoing error message: "Failed to create archive. No suitable archive manager found.". I don't understand why this is happening, since I see the archive manager in the whiskermenu. When I click on it, it open just fine.. [00:35] I'm usung Xubuntu 16.04.2 [00:40] Hi guys, I'm failry new to xubuntu and I hope you can help me. [00:43] It turns out that there is a recent system update that is messing with the Wi-Fi link speed. I've tried many things and all of them lead to that conclusion. [00:44] bonsaitree, why are you crossposting [00:44] stick to one channel please [00:44] bazhang:I did not know that it's considered bad behavior. [00:44] very [00:45] bazhang:Okay then, i will know now :) [01:01] Thanks for nothing! [03:27] I may have found another small bug related to the panel, Window Buttons plugin this time [03:28] Spass: I suggest #xubuntu-devel from now on. [03:29] krytarik: Sure, you're right. [07:14] flocculant, I must admit, despite the small border, the new terminal has some cool features === rud0lf is now known as rudolf === rudolf is now known as rud0lf === rud0lf is now known as potato === potato is now known as rud0lf === rud0lf is now known as sorry_test === sorry_test is now known as rud0lf [09:33] afernoon [12:52] I will ask here also, since no one is answering on #ubuntu. [12:52] My Wi-Fi link speed problem is still unresolved. I get the same speeds as i got before and as declared by my ISP when i am on Ethernet (on Linux) and when i am on both Wi-Fi and Ethernet on Windows. I was suspicious that the origin of the problem is because i have been removing certain bin files in /lib/firmware, but it turned out that it's not the case, since i did a fresh install and the problem is still here. I now suspect that it's a certain [12:52] system update that messed things up. I have also tried logging with different kernel versions but there is no difference. Any ideas? [12:53] "system update" [12:53] when was it fine? [12:53] from what to what did you update? [12:54] bonsaitree: ? [12:54] which version of xubuntu were you running when it was fine, which version are you running now? [12:57] By "system update" i mean the update that is present in "Software", labeled "OS Updates". Since the problem is present on a fresh install too, it is very probable that it is related to a system update. [12:57] pmjdebruijn, ^ [13:02] bonsaitreh: I don't follow [13:03] if the issue is still present on a fresh install, then it would seem to incidate it's not caused by a xubuntu update [13:03] but as I said, which exactly version were you using, and which are you using now? [13:03] 16.04 ? 16.04.1? 16.04.2 ? 16.10 ? [13:03] what does 'uname -a' say? [13:21] pmjdebruijn, 4.4.0-72-generic [13:25] bonsaitreh: and what were you running when it did work fine? 16.04 too? [13:25] pmjdebruijn, Yup [13:26] you could try installing a very old 16.04 kernel, like so: sudo apt-get install linux-image-4.4.0-22-generic [13:26] and boot that [13:26] after a clean install, you might have ended up with something newer already (even without manually updating) [13:27] especially if you've used a 16.04.1 install iso [13:27] pmjdebruijn, The Live USB that i used for this install is the same that was used for the previous install, but let me check the .iso version [13:28] you should be able to revert the firmware files like so: sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-firmware=1.157 [13:31] pmjdebruijn, 16.04.1 [13:31] pmjdebruijn, I will try with the kernel you suggested, brb [13:48] pmjdebruijn, Installed the 4.4.0-22-generic, the system won't even find/show a wireless interface with 'iwconfig'. Tried 4.4.0-31-generic and 4.4.0-72-generic, the link is even slower with them. [14:01] bonsaitree: even slower compared to what? [14:02] also are you sure there are no environmental factors [14:02] new neighbor wifi etc [14:04] pmjdebruijn, My bad, the bandwidth is the same with -31 and -72. on -22 the wifi interface is not even shown. Btw that's what first came into my mind, but the bandwidth is excellent while using Windows, so it must be a software issue and not of electro-magnetic nature. [14:06] I find it strange that it did perform good on ubuntu 16.04 in the past though [14:06] bonsaitree: as far as the -22 kernel is concerned you might need to combine that with a linux-firmware downgrade [14:06] rarely there are version interdependancies [14:08] pmjdebruijn, How do i do that? [14:10] pmjdebruijn, I wanted to try to install the 4.10 kernel with 16.04.2, someone told me on #ubuntu to use to following command: install linux-generic-hwe-16.04-edge , but i get this error: install: missing destination file operand after 'linux-generic-hwe-16.04-edge' [14:10] sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-firmware=1.157 for the older firwmare files [14:11] and the edge stuff is experimental [14:11] so I wouldn't add that [14:11] pmjdebruijn, Okay then i will try with the older firmware [14:11] sudo apt-get install --install-recommends linux-generic-hwe-16.04 xserver-xorg-hwe-16.04 for 4.8 [14:11] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack [14:12] for the edge stuff you probably need to tell apt explicitly to use an experimental repo, never tried it myself [14:15] pmjdebruijn, Okay won't experiment with that now, i installed the older firmware, should i try with -22 now? [14:23] pmjdebruijn, Nope, still the same. How do i revert to the previous linux kernel? [14:27] pmjdebruijn, 157.8? [14:28] just run updates [14:28] you meant firmware right? [14:28] when you run updates, the latest version will be pulled in again [14:28] sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade [14:28] pmjdebruijn, Yes [14:28] thanks [14:28] anyhow, then I'd try the HWE stack [14:30] pmjdebruijn, Yes, i meant firmware not kernel, my bad [14:35] pmjdebruijn, You recommend this: apt-get install --install-recommends linux-generic-hwe-16.04 xserver-xorg-hwe-16.04 ? [14:37] I just pasted the command [14:37] 16:11 [14:38] pmjdebruijn, i see [14:40] pmjdebruijn, Okay, how do i upgrade to 16.10? [14:40] Sorry for asking this (maybe basic) question, but there is no concrete answer on the net. [14:41] for major version i'd just reinstall [14:41] it's often faster [14:41] but [14:41] with regard to hardware support installing the hwe stack would make 16.04 essentially the same as 16.10 [14:42] bonsaitreh: the page I linked, explains this [14:47] pmjdebruijn, So if i install the enablement stack i will get the 4.8 kernel, am i right? I am not sure if i can keep up with this whole new terminology :D [14:47] yes [14:48] it gets you the kernel and xorg from 16.10 effectively [14:48] on 16.04 is a fairly clean and supported way [14:48] the 16.04.2 installation ISO have this onboard already by default [14:49] pmjdebruijn, But since i was installing with the .1 .iso i have to do it manually [14:49] i guess [14:49] for existing installs it's opt-in indeed [14:50] i will try it then [15:32] pmjdebruijn, Nah, the same even after 4.8.0-46-generic [15:35] I really have no clue how to fix this. [15:52] Is it possible that a blackhat somehow capped my wi-fi card? [19:05] Ever since I installed Xubuntu 16.04.2 I have this weird bug, whenever I try to create an archive from the right-click menu in Thunar I get the following error message:"Failed to create archive. No suitable archive manager found.". When I use the Extract Here option, it works fine, file-roller launches and extracts the archive without a hitch. It seems like file-roller is not linked to the Create Archive in the right click men [19:05] Does anyone know how to re-associate file-roller to the Create Archive right click menu launcher? Or how I can just simply fix it? [23:34] Hello [23:45] Anyone able to explain how to how to easily change my boot drive for xubuntu?
