RagterHello. I have a very n00b question if someone can help me. Looking to create a service that will mount my drives.02:47
Bashing-omomagash: No, 40_custom is default . If you are not comfortanle with moving /etc/grub.d/40_custom.save, you may remove the execute bit, Now as to what is going on in that file - only you presently can say - or why you made it up .02:48
mat__Ragter: what you want to achieve02:48

omagashBashing-om: I'll move 40_custom on any dir like /home/?02:52
Bashing-omomagash: Yeah, -40_custom.save !! - that will work , anywhere that you are comfortable and know where to find in when the need arises .02:56
omagashBashing-om: since I just discovered the mv command, I tried it out like this: sudo mv /etc/grub.d/40_custom /etc/grub.d/40_custom.save02:57
omagashthen sudo update-grub works flawless, seems like it has to be named with .save extensiob02:58
Bashing-omomagash: Well, grub reads ALL the fils in the grub.d directory. IF -40_custom.save does not serve a grub purpose it needs to be gone !02:59

thatlizdudebut for so I fix it?06:29
thatlizdudeor wait, so it's Ubuntu, not the laptop?06:30

thatlizdudebut I need it to be running as a server06:32
YankDownUnderthatlizdude: Well, then again you've answered your own question, bro. Merely logoff. Simple! Yay!06:33
thatlizdudeif I log off, the terminal won't be running...06:34
YankDownUnderthatlizdude: Solution: On the console (tty1) -> do what you're going to do. Which is ungodly simple. Hit CTRL-ALT-F1 -> login -> run what you need to run -> while that's doing it's thing, hit CTRL-ALT-F7 and you're back at the graphical login. Hmm?06:35
thatlizdudeso basically without using the GUI?06:36

thatlizdudeI mean that would be kind of a limitation06:36

thatlizdudeso the issue is keyboard mapping, which is caused by incompatibility06:37
thatlizdudeI tried ttyl1 before I believe, didn't seem to work for login06:38
YankDownUnderthatlizdude: What is the limitation of running your program(s) from tty1 so that it's not going to interfere with your GUI login? (and vice versa)06:38
YankDownUnderthatlizdude: If you CANNOT login to tty1, then either your username or password is incorrect. Simply put. Very simply put.06:39
thatlizdudeYankDownUnder but I'd still need to login, right?06:39
thatlizdudeokay06:39
thatlizdudeand if I can login in ttyl1, can I then switch to GUI?06:39

newbie123ducasse, If just do #sudo ufw default deny && sudo ufw enable .....Will it be enough ?07:13
ducassenewbie123: if you have no idea how to set up a firewall you might want to start with something a bit more preconfigured for that. if you really want to do it yourself you need to do some serious reading.07:15
newbie123ducasse, I will be using Raspberry Pi ..Any suggestions ?07:17
ducassenewbie123: an rpi is not well-suited as a router, so i suspect there isn't many ready-made things available. maybe openwrt/lede runs on it.07:19
Ben64not enough throughput in a pi to make a good router07:21
ducassenewbie123: there are plenty of low-cost devices out there that do make decent routers, but you will still need to do some reading. that is off-topic here, though. ars technica had some articles on building your own router a while back, try those.07:26
newbie123ducasse, Okay07:27

maze_Hi, GRUB is disappeared when starting pc, how to reinstall it from a Live USB?? (UEFI)08:33
YankDownUndermaze_: Single boot system or dual boot?08:34
maze_YankDownUnder: dual boot with windows 1008:34
maze_YankDownUnder: I booted from a Live USB to test some stuff and then at reboot GRUB wasn't there anymore08:35
YankDownUndermaze_: GRUB wasn't on the USB, or on the hdd?08:35
pd1maze_: the dual boot is UEFI too?08:35
maze_pd1: Yes, dual boot is UEFI08:36
maze_YankDownUnder: It's strange, because booting from USB live shouldn't mess up witht he GRUB into the HDD08:36
maze_YankDownUnder: But already happened 2 times that grub disappears after rebooting when I booted from a live USB08:36
maze_YankDownUnder: The first time I reinstalled linux and it fixed GRUB too08:36
maze_YankDownUnder: because I don't know how to restore GRUB08:37
YankDownUndermaze_: Not going to give my opinion on booting with Windows (insert your version here)...check the BIOS first...08:37
maze_YankDownUnder: The bios looks normal08:37
maze_YankDownUnder: Windows 1008:37
maze_YankDownUnder: It has worked fine for 2 days in dual boot with GRUB08:37
YankDownUndermaze_: Check, then double check. Did you make any changes to BIOS to boot from the USB in the first place?08:37
maze_YankDownUnder: No, just plug the USB in and press F12 at start, then selecting USB to boot from the usb08:38
maze_YankDownUnder: F12 is the boot menu, not the bios itself08:38
pd1maze_: that can mess things up08:38
maze_YankDownUnder: But even in the bios it looks all the same08:38
YankDownUndermaze_: DOUBLE CHECK THE BIOS. TRIPLE CHECK even...08:38
maze_YankDownUnder: I already did08:38
YankDownUnder"Looks the same" and IS the same are two different things.08:38
pd1the gpt partition is on top of the boot order?08:39
maze_YankDownUnder: I triple checked everything and the bios has the same settings08:39
maze_pd1: No, the first it Windows Boot Manager, the HDD, then CD, etc08:39
maze_pd1: It was the same even when the dual boot and GRUB worked fine08:39
YankDownUnderI need ice cream. And coffee. And an unloaded gun.08:40
pd1Windows boot manager does not sound like its grub08:40
maze_pd1: It's a UEFI system08:40
maze_pd1: I never saw GRUB neither LINUX in the bios boot list08:40
pd1ubuntu is on top of mine08:40
maze_pd1: I always see Windows Boot Manager, and it worked ifne08:40
maze_pd1: Is UEFI?08:41
pd1yes08:41
maze_pd1: do you have dual boot?08:41
maze_pd1: I think that since when installing Ubuntu I have to select the EFI partition to install GRUB, and the EFi partition is the one with Windows boot manager also, it wont shwo you Ubuntu on the list08:42
maze_pd1: anyway, do you know a way to reinstall grub from the usb live?08:42
pd1maze_: chroot into the ubuntu sys and run update-grub08:43
maze_pd1: or to repair it08:43
maze_pd1: I've read that this do not work in UEFI mode08:43
maze_pd1: are you sure?08:43
pd1maze_: no08:43

=== juergh is now known as Guest19398

pd1maze_: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair perhaps this thing can help?08:46
pd1maze_: smae idea here but it only says: do not burn it to a dvd...08:46
maze_In another guide of Boot-Repair it says that if it doesn't work is probably because you got a UEFI system...08:47
maze_pd1: damn08:47
maze_pd1: Looks like Im forced to reinstall the whole thing for the third time08:47
maze_pd1: and then I can't even boot from a USB because it would mess up again08:48
maze_pd1: There should be a way to repair GRUB from the live USB without having to reinstall the whole Ubuntu08:48
pd1maze_: dd the whole disk somehwere before running from usb08:48
maze_pd1:  qhat is dd?08:49
pd1the ubuntu install is 10 minutes. that should not be a problem08:49
pd1!info dd | maze_08:49

alkisgmaze_: uefi boot cd uses grub. You can use "configfile" to boot your real installation using the live cd08:49
alkisgmaze_: once you're in the real installation, just run grub-install08:49
maze_alkisg: Could you explan? I'm not following you08:50
alkisgmaze_: that is, you start with the live cd, you press "c" in grub to get a console, and then run configfile /path/to/your/grub.cfg08:50

maze_alkisg: Yes, the live does when booting from USB08:51
alkisgmaze_: then it's the same, yes08:51
maze_alkisg: It is the HDD with the dual boot that do not show GRUB at start08:51
maze_alkisg: I'm not sure I'm understanding08:52
alkisgmaze_: example menu: http://www.tecmint.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/Ubuntu-Grub-Menu.png08:52
maze_alkisg: I run the USB live and at the start press C in grub, ge a console, type that command08:52
alkisgmaze_: when your usb stick starts, does it show that menu?08:52
maze_alkisg: and what should happen?08:52
maze_alkisg: Yes, the GRUB menu with "try Ubuntu"...08:53

alkisgmaze_: so then you'll be able to boot your system as usual, from your main grub menu, not from the usb stick grub menu08:53
maze_alkisg: Ok at that point I should be able to log into my ubuntu installation08:53
alkisgRight08:53
maze_alkisg: Then should I try to repair GRUB from there?08:53

alkisgEither reinstall grub, or run grub-install08:54
maze_alkisg: (I know are stupid question but I'm new to linux)08:54
maze_alkisg: What command more precisely?08:54
alkisgset root=(hd0,gpt1) => press tab there to see if it's hd0 or hd1, and gpt1 or other number08:55
alkisgThen configfile /efi/boot/ubuntu/grub.cfg => press tab there to see the exact path for grub.cfg08:55
alkisgThose 2 commands should be enough to show you your real grub menu08:55

allenriathand about this "next ubuntu DE", IMO kde deserves a chance. I'm testing KDE Neon right now, and it's simple and friendly as gnome never was. No hard times, 2 weaks already and no bugs on my machine. Everything working out of the box, without worries.10:44
pratyushHello10:44
pratyushBut KDE is slow on my machine10:44
allenriathso is unity10:45
mattpalermoallenraith: It seems to have improved alot since 16.10.10:45

andy565mattpalermo: it just starts windows when i turn my laptop on10:46
pratyushI've used KDE once. I think you can never beat KDE when it comes to customization ^_^10:46
andy565fozu: are you sure that guide works with UEFI boot?10:47
mattpalermoandy565: Haha that is true. But I'm sure there's a toggle switch somewhere for that. I am just stoked that I can configure all my key bindings :)10:47
YankDownUnderKDE3 was a treat. Fast and customisable bigtime...but, well, things change, don't they?10:47
YankDownUnderGnome 1.4.6 was also fast and great...again, same story..."Code Bloat!"...10:47
allenriathBy default I run a arch box with openbox or I3... I like to be minimalist, but I have to admit, KDE is a helluva solid choice if you want to be "user friendly" as ubuntu is.10:47
allenriathand nowadays QT has a upper hand over GTK310:48
YankDownUnderI made a mistake of giving a KDE install to a client - the machine came back with literally HUNDREDS of widgets and notes on the desktop...WIPE! Ended up giving the Cinnamon...can't break that (much).10:49
mattpalermoYankDownUnder: Good point10:49

allenriathwell, I will never like a package management based on apt... but... aside it, kde neon suparsed my expectatives at a point that I would point it as a "unity successor".10:53

hfpI'm still confused with .profile and .bashrc. I was under the impression that the best practice was to set your ENV vars in .profile because it is loaded once at login, and all the rest in .bashrc because .bashrc is executed everytime you open a GNOME-terminal window. This doesn't seem to be the case though, any variable I export in my .profile is not set when I open a GNOME-terminal. I read that sourcing12:40
hfp.profile from .bashrc is bad practice so what am I supposed to do? Put everything in .bashrc and delete .profile altogether? Duplicate everything between .profile and .bashrc? Something else?12:40
EriC^^hfp: .profile is only sourced in login shells, so opening a terminal doesn't source it, unless you do "bash -l" when a new gui session starts it gets sourced though12:41
=== jones_ is now known as Guest75941
hfpEriC^^: right, my understanding was that .profile was sourced once, at login, and so any variable exported in it would be available in every GNOME-terminal; but that doesn't seem to be the case. If I want my vars exported and PATH altered, it seems that I'd have to do it in .bashrc. So what is .profile good for, why shouldn't I source it from my .bashrc or delete it altogether if it won't export the variables12:44

DexterFstrangest problem: installed 16.04 fresh, kept an exisitng /home on that SSD. have / and /home, swap, nothing else. configured everthing to my liking, today boot the machine and did a time warp: every change to /home is lost. I am bereft of any clue what happened.13:35
rizonzBluesKaj: nope, just eth013:37
BluesKajDexterF:  did you set the moutpoint in the partitioning phase for /home without formatting13:38
DexterFall changes on root, i.e. all in etc, installed programs and so on are there, only home is affected.13:38
BluesKajrizonz:  not a VM expert13:38
rizonzBluesKaj: it's not because of a VM13:38
DexterFBluesKaj, yes, I set up sda3 as mountpoint /home and "do not format"13:38
blackflowrizonz: for virtio it's ensX, I mostly see ens313:38
blackflowrizonz: this explains the naming scheme, see comments: https://github.com/systemd/systemd/blob/master/src/udev/udev-builtin-net_id.c#L2013:39
rizonzblackflow: true but didn't I set that during my installer already I don't wnas ens ?13:39
rizonz*want13:39
blackflowrizonz: while it's very hard to predict exact name, once established it won't change unless you physically change the bus/location of the interface13:39
blackflowrizonz: if you remove that net.ifnames=0 kernel line, it will default to new systemd scheme13:39
rizonzblackflow: true but for a VM you never know what the bus is13:39
rizonzif provisioned13:40
rizonzso ethX is easier13:40
DexterFBluesKaj, I am a massive idiot13:40
BluesKajDexterF: /dev/sda3 ?13:40
blackflowI suppose so, that's the part what I meant about hard to predict13:40
blackflowrizonz: ^^13:40
rizonzblackflow: :)13:40
BluesKajDexterF:  thought sda3 would be your swap13:40
blackflowrizonz: the "predictable" refers to "once defined, based on bus, it remains the same"13:41
DexterFBluesKaj, I cloned the ssd as a backup, I THINK it just mounted the usb3 attached clone backup uuid from yesterday, or I have been writing to the backup all day... checking...13:41
DexterFBluesKaj, augh, it mounted the backup home... brb...13:42
DexterFBluesKaj, it mounted the backup :D13:44
DexterFI *have* to remember geenrating new uuids when cloning disks13:45
hfpEriC^^: FWIW, I was exporting $NVM_DIR but was echoing $NVM_HOME, hence why it was the inly variable that was getting set, ever. I guess I'm tired, or an idiot, or both. As usual, the computer is right and the user is wrong.13:45
DexterFsomething completely different: how do I acquire additional gtk3 themes and preview/apply them? there used to be gtk-theme-switch, but that goes for gtk2 alone it seems13:48
BluesKajDexterF:  which DE ?13:50

Dark_Arckille: what does visual studio have to do with anything? o.O14:27
DexterFkille, it is an re-implementation of the Windows APIs, so it does not emulate a running windows core but offers the programs interface to native implementations on linux14:27
kille<dark_arc> i code in windows for a living. <dexterf> did not know that, just made myself seem stupid here.14:28

Dark_Arcfor sure14:28

dannyxnis python still worth to learn more than java?14:30
CarlFKhow do I tell the installer to setup whatever is needed to boot from efi?14:30
killehey don't hate windows, don't be a fanboi. there are pros and cons on both ends, personally i love ubuntu, but i grew up on windows.14:30
Dark_Arcdannyxn: depends what you want to do, it's just a tool14:30
killedoes linux support uefi yet? last i read there were some issues there.14:31
dannyxnI want to work in security industry14:31
Dark_Arckille: yeah, perfectly fine14:31
CarlFKdannyxn: you will have an easier time finding java job, but you won't have as much fun.14:31
Dark_Arcusing UEFI right now actually14:31
killecool. didnt know. ill go look it up. :)14:32
dannyxnyes using UEFI is right, yesterday I've checked it14:32
killeanyhow, cheers for now guys,14:32
DexterFkille, the problem really is uefi, not linux :) uefi is evil and broken by design14:32
Dark_ArcDexterF: I don't think it's inheritly bad, the signing causes some problems, but not needing to use logical volumes is nice14:32
CarlFKDark_Arc: soo.. how did you do it?   I am assuming/hoping I dont have to  parted up my disk by hand.  I would hope "well supported" means there is a script or something that will do it14:33
dannyxnguys, any good refers to nice books to learn intermediate python?14:33
CarlFKdannyxn: /j #python14:33
dannyxnI mean networking included etc.14:33
ducassedannyxn: look at the site(s) mentioned in the topic in #python14:34
Dark_ArcCarlFK: if you booted in UEFI, the installer itself should handle that as long as you have a UEFI partition (to my recollection)14:34
DexterFDark_Arc, well it *is* a mini OS with very low level hardware access that does not let you know how it ticks under the bonnet. it essentially violates the open src idea and is a key eyebrow raiser regarding how much I can trust my machine14:34
BluesKajDexterF:  don't thing uefi is evil by design, but poorlly designed and clunky from a linux perspective14:34
CarlFKDark_Arc: I only have 1 ext4 partition.  that i am happy to blow away.   sounds like I need to create the partition so that the installer will work with it?   seems odd.14:35
DexterFBluesKaj, ok, the shoddy design and how manufacturers handle it pose the real threats, true that.14:35
Dark_ArcDexterF: fair point14:35
DexterFI remember bricked laptop just by installing linux. thinkpad 540, some samsungs.14:36
ducasseCarlFK: the installer will take care of everything for you if you just let it.14:36
ducasseCarlFK: just let it do automatic partitioning.14:37
BluesKajDexterF:  TBH. I wiped uefi/gpt off my laptop back in 2013 when i bought it , wasn't about to use windows anyway14:37
Dark_ArcDexterF: really? that's crazy14:37
CarlFKducasse: um.. the installer gave me 1 big partition.  text mode install screens about partitioning https://veyepar.nextdayvideo.com/static/temp/d.html14:37
Dark_Arcare you sure you booted in UEFI mode?14:38
Dark_ArcMost bios will list (EUFI) next to the boot menu option14:38
Dark_ArcUEFI*14:38
ducasseCarlFK: i suspect you might have booted in legacy mode14:38
BluesKajyup, sounds like it14:38

ducasse!latest | lucas-arg14:39
ubottulucas-arg: Packages in Ubuntu may not be the latest. Ubuntu aims for stability, so "latest" may not be a good idea. DexterFDark_Arc, google uefi bricked thinkpad.14:39
CarlFKI am booting the pxe net install.  which says efi, but #ipxe says "that is often a lie" so.. how do I tell?14:39
Dark_ArcDexterF: wow, I'd say that's more a bad on Lenovo thing than anything else14:39
ducasseCarlFK: that doesn't support uefi afaik, but check in #ubuntu-server14:39
DexterFBluesKaj, "wiped" uefi..? you mean you went legacy, not "alternative BIOS" I assume?14:40

theToolmanthatlizdude: all of my level 3 infrastructure is on an ubunt 16.04 box that runs dhcpd and named as well as some other things like nfs, cifs, sshfs, ntp, etc20:57
theToolmanits the only thing other than my DC that gets a static address20:57
thatlizdudetheToolman: so i did this: https://askubuntu.com/questions/87665/how-do-i-change-the-hostname-without-a-restart20:57
djfirethank20:57
thatlizdudeI'm stuck on this: sudo -H gedit /etc/hostname20:57
theToolmandjfire: what are you trying to in the terminal20:57
djfirenothing20:57
theToolmanthatlizdude: modify /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts and that should be pretty live20:58
djfirei try linux20:58
djfirethank20:58
theToolmandjfire: get out of here20:58
thatlizdudetheToolman: when i run it, it says "sudo: unable to resolve host tpad"20:58
djfireok20:58
thatlizdudetpad is the name i did when i executed "sudo hostname tpad"20:58
Ben64thatlizdude: yeah, your hostname has to match in /etc/hosts20:58
theToolmanthatlizdude: is tpad the new name?20:58
Ben64or sudo won't work20:58
YankDownUnder"tpad" has to be either in DNS or the /etc/hosts20:58
thatlizdudeyes it is20:58

white_magicit seems like a steal of a deal21:02
theToolmandjfire: the commands that you find for the terminal are mostly "bash" commands. they are also bins from /bin /sbin /usr/bin /usr/sbin and everything else that is set in $PATH21:02
zeeblefritz@thetoolman21:02
zeeblefritzwhats your issue?21:02
selsperbeen hoping to win a scratch card for a while to get something like that white_magic21:02

thatlizdudewell now "hostname" displays my old hostname after restart21:03
thatlizdudewtf did i do21:03
theToolmanzeeblefritz: i have four monitors on dual 7970's but i can't get it to do the layout that i want which is like an upside down t. the only layout i can get to work ok is [][][][]21:03
theToolmanzeeblefritz: but even that wont be persistent in reboot21:04
zeeblefritzthetoolman: nvm I can't even get mine to work right. yours is way more complex21:04
theToolmanzeeblefritz: and xrandr isn't displaying all of my monitors though xfce4-display-settings is seeing them all21:04
theToolmanzeeblefritz: see what this gets ya https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver21:05
YankDownUndertheToolman: Have you tried using "arandr" to adjust the positioning of your layout?21:05
UsQUEis there option to change the interface names in ubuntu back to the old fashion linux ones -->eth0... ? :)21:05
theToolmanYankDownUnder: yeah and that only finds three of my 421:05
theToolmanYankDownUnder: and i tried modifying its shell file to account to what xfce4 config says all 4 displays are and then it tells me that 1920x1200 is not a supported mode (even though that is what its set to and its on. thats the fourth screens native resolution.)21:06
YankDownUndertheToolman: Are you sure that one of the "monitors" is not hidden behind another? I've had that happen before...it "appeared" as though there were three, but one was "hidden"...therefore, it was a matter of mucking about with "arandr" and making absolutely sure.21:06
zeeblefritztheToolman: yeah actually on that now. everything seemed to install but im getting black screen on boot and can get gui through recovery.21:07
theToolmanzeeblefritz: have you checked your journalctl for any errors?21:07
thatlizdudegetting errors, i give up21:07
thatlizdudei just wanted a home server :'(21:08
theToolmanzeeblefritz: ctrl+alt+2 will take you to another tty where you can view that log21:08
selsperi been at this laptop for like 2 weeks now21:08
selsperbarely anything done...21:08
theToolmanyeah took me about 2 weeks to get my gentoo hacktop up and running21:08
theToolmanbut thats gentoo21:08
zeeblefritztheToolman i have no idea what that means21:08
theToolmanif you hit ctrl+alt+2 when it gives you that black screen, you can log in, and run journalctl and look through there to see if you see any errors that will point you in the right direction21:09
Bashing-omthatlizdude: ' cat /etc/hosts ; cat /etc/hostname ' user_name same same in both files ?21:09

theToolmanbut i can get them working if it is for in a row21:47
theToolmanfour21:47

zeeblefritzah i see your setup now21:48
theToolmanand its mounted next to another one that i just disabeld21:48
zeeblefritzthat seems fairly standard21:48
theToolmani used to have a 2 by 2 and that worked (i was running it with plasma but i don't like plasma so i'm back in xfce)21:48
theToolmani say it worked, but the top right screen had a black desktop and none of the plasma widgets would go over21:48
zeeblefritzi just started the switch back. been 2 years without my main rig and decided to convert this more portable and everything is different again21:49
theToolmanthe resolution is too high for me to use it and plus its' way aboove my eyeline so i figured this layout would be better21:49
theToolmanbeing that it had some weird thing on that monitor, i put my conkys over there (two from localhost and two from my firewall)21:49
theToolmanand thats what i plan to do with the upper monitor21:50
theToolmanso really the four in a row is fine for me, but its not persistent. i have to set it every time i boot21:50

ilkerI think this is the first time I encounter a problem like this after running apt update && upgrade, interesting and annoying...22:38
user445gogeta: and I'm talking about protecting against remote attacks / compromise22:38
gogetauser445, vpn also helps with that as they dont see your real pc22:38
user445So without access to the IP, somone can't remotely compromise a system?22:39

gogetauser445, oh it can22:41
theToolmanbecause there are less statistics of it22:41

Bashing-om!virus | user44522:42
ubottuuser445: Antivirus is something you don't need on !Linux, except where files are then passed to Windows computers (perhaps using Samba). See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Antivirus22:42
gogetauser445, but nearly all of that target servers not desktops22:42
user445Makes sense22:42
user445There's little reason to put effort into writing a virus for a linux desktop when so little people use the OS22:43
gogetauser445, and many infections are user error running bad app as root a infected repo etc22:43
theToolmanbut of course a virus for linux is worth so much more because its more business oriented so that data that you can exfiltrate is juicier22:44
user445That's true22:44
gogetauser445, but with linux devs tend to fix the weakness soit makes virus hard to keep making22:44
user445does anyone else take additional security measures aside from using a VPN? e.g. firejail22:45
theToolmani bet you the reason they still say that linux doesn't get malware is because they're still telling everyone you don't need an antivirus on linux so there isn't anything detecting and aggregating the statistical data22:45
