ilzolendepestering you because #ubuntu seems to be in the middle of something: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PortableDevices/iPhone doesn't seem to give much photo importing advice06:14
xanguaThere's basically 3 options with iOS devices, you just the last bleeding Ubuntu, you hold iOS updates or don't use iOS at all06:22
ilzolendeit's my friend's ios device and i can't retroactively make her downgrade it06:22
ilzolendehmm, we could use bluetooth file transfer06:23
ilzolendeoooor not06:24
justanotheruserhi all, how do i get 1920x1080 over VGA? i get [    49.101] (II) fglrx(0): Cannot get EDID information for CRT106:44
justanotheruserthats at the end of the Xorg log06:45
justanotheruseralso the other thing is, xubuntu ()14.04 is damn slow especially after running like 10hrs06:45
justanotheruserit comes to a crawl, and even freeze06:45
justanotheruserrunning fglrx here06:46
pmjdebruijnsounds like something worth investigating06:46
justanotheruserbut somehow i dont see that this is related with the video card, its a seperate issue i think06:46
pmjdebruijnI ran fglrx a while ago, for me it caused crashes06:46
justanotheruseri mean the slow running thing06:46
justanotheruserthen again it might be06:47
justanotherusergpu is 5850, CPu running a quad core xeon06:47
justanotheruserwith 4gb ram06:47
pmjdebruijndoesn't really matter06:47
pmjdebruijnsomething is just misbehaving06:47
pmjdebruijnwhen your system is getting so slow06:47
pmjdebruijntry running top06:47
pmjdebruijnand see if anything is pulling a lot of cpu usage06:47
justanotheruseryeah i believe that too, it just starts to get sluggish after a while and then dead slow06:48
pmjdebruijnespecially if you left some apps long running06:48
pmjdebruijnlike browsers etc06:48
justanotheruserrunning chrome,06:48
justanotheruserbut also tried it with brave06:48
pmjdebruijndoes quitting chrome solve the sluggisnish?06:48
justanotherusersame thing06:48
justanotheruserno it does not06:48
justanotheruserthats the first thing i thought off06:48
pmjdebruijnalso chrome or chromium?06:48
justanotheruserbut quiting browser and then even logging out and back in does not solve it06:49
pmjdebruijngenerally speaking i'd mostly stick to software in there repos06:49
pmjdebruijnjustanotheruser: have you tried the open source radeon driver as opposed to fglrx06:49
justanotheruseryeah the confusion i have is about those amd drivers06:49
pmjdebruijnsince fglrx isn't that great06:49
justanotheruseri wanna run wine with dx11 support06:49
pmjdebruijnbut that's true for most binary blobs drivers06:49
pmjdebruijnjustanotheruser: first see what fglrx is the issue, then worry about what to do next06:50
justanotheruseras much as i understand the "radeon" driver does not support dx1106:50
pmjdebruijnfor troubleshooting it does not matter06:50
justanotheruserso what to do?06:50
justanotheruserany ideas?06:50
justanotheruseri dont even know where to begin lol06:51
pmjdebruijnjust uninstall fglrx06:51
justanotheruserand replace with radeon?06:51
pmjdebruijnyeah06:51
pmjdebruijnif the issue disappears, then fglrx is the culprit06:52
justanotheruseralso what is that amdgpu open source driver im so confused06:52
pmjdebruijnif you uninstall fglrx, it should automatically fall back on what ever driver is needed06:52
pmjdebruijnif all goes well, there no need for you to worry about that06:52
justanotheruserwill the installation for the radeon driver suffice, trough the settings menu>>additional drivers?06:52
pmjdebruijnat least that's what I recall from back when I used fglrx06:52
pmjdebruijnjustanotheruser: the others drivers are already installed06:53
justanotheruseror doi have to manually purge fgrlx?06:53
pmjdebruijnprobably removing flgrx06:53
pmjdebruijnbut I don't have _that_ much experience with the blob driver06:53
pmjdebruijnstick around, maybe someone else has a better idea06:53
justanotheruserthe other thing is, there is fglrz and fglrx udate as choice06:54
justanotheruserthe other thing is, there is fglrx and fglrx udate as choice*06:54
justanotheruseralso any idea how i can force 1920x1080 on the display connected via  VGA_?06:54
justanotheruseri tried checking but all i found is, in threads "solved" i bought an HDMI cable, thats not what i want lol06:55
justanotheruserok well i installed the open source driver now, will try to restart for now and see what happens.06:57
justanotheruserdamn now im getting "Purging configuration files for fglrx (2:15.201.2-0ubuntu0.14.04.1) ... update-rc.d: /etc/init.d/atieventsd exists during rc.d purge (use -f to force) dpkg: error processing package fglrx (--purge):  subprocess installed post-removal script returned error exit status 1 E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)"07:06
justanotheruserwhy?07:06
justanotherusernvm "sudo apt-get purge fglrx*" seems to do the trick07:07
pmjdebruijnyeah blob drivers tend to be a bit of a mess07:08
justanotheruserwill have to reboot again, brb07:08
justanotheruser_so.. purging fglrx worked, it runs now ith the radeon driver, the question however is now, how do i get the 2nd display working, its at 1024x768 atm with the fglrx i got at least 1600x1200 its over VGA connected, and it can do 1920x108007:13
justanotheruser_can i set somehwere the resolution manually via terminal? i guess yes, just dont know where, xorg.conf is not the place, at least not in /etc/X1107:16
pmjdebruijnI don't think VGA supports 1920x108007:16
justanotheruser_well i have not this computer also "hackintosh running" and it works on there07:16
pmjdebruijnat least not officially07:16
justanotheruser_i have on*07:16
justanotheruser_where are the settings stored?07:17
pmjdebruijnthere a read-edid and edid-decode pacakge that might provide some insight07:17
justanotheruser_yeah but the radeon driver does not give me even the 1600x1080 that i have had before with the fglrx driver07:18
justanotheruser_so i wonder where does the open source driver save the settings07:18
pmjdebruijnit doesn't07:19
pmjdebruijnby default everything is just on auto detect07:19
pmjdebruijnwhich depends on EDID07:19
pmjdebruijnwhich is why I pointed you to those packages07:20
pmjdebruijnas it can decode it for you07:20
justanotheruser_will have to look into that then never worked with EDID07:20
justanotheruser_thx for pointing me there07:20
justanotheruser_hrmm even i run the radeon driver it wont solve the problem that i will not be able to run dx11 games/apps with it07:28
justanotheruser_is there another driver that runs with my HD5850 beside the fglrx and the radeon driver?07:29
justanotheruser_that i could try07:29
justanotheruser_because i recall seeing mentionings about a driver called amdgpu open source but im confused, it sounds like it is the same as radeon but some other threads seem to talk its something seperate07:30
justanotheruser_and i cant seem to find it to install for xubuntu 14.0407:31
pmjdebruijnalso keep in mind that 14.04 is becoming a bit dated now07:31
pmjdebruijnfor all you know this issue may have already been resolved in 16.0407:31
pmjdebruijnoh wait07:31
pmjdebruijnATI stopped updating fglrx for newer distros, didn't they07:32
justanotheruser_yeah but the problem is that 16,04 runs a 4x kernel where the fglrx does not work and i need a proprietary driver to run playonlinux/steam/sto07:32
pmjdebruijnhave you tried 16.04 with the opensource drivers?07:34
pmjdebruijntypically you lose some performance though07:34
justanotheruser_yes i tried,07:34
justanotheruser_i cant start the game with the kernel07:35
justanotheruser_it gives an error msg07:35
pmjdebruijnanyhow07:35
justanotheruser_because wine 2.3 does not load dx1107:35
pmjdebruijnto be honest gaming via wine always seemed like a fragile proposition07:36
pmjdebruijnI'm sorry I don't have any better ideas for you07:36
justanotheruser_i apriciate the time and tips you had so far, no need to apologize07:36
justanotheruser_i guess i will go back to fglrx, but i still dont understand the difference between fglrx and fglrx-update07:37
pmjdebruijntry sticking with the open source drivers for a day or so07:37
pmjdebruijnso you at least know if the sluggishness issues are the fglrx driver07:37
pmjdebruijnthen at least you don't need to look any further07:38
justanotheruser_you mean to see if the performance drag down is caused by the  driver?07:38
justanotheruser_yeah good idea, will do that07:38
justanotheruser_well it does seem snappier then before ,. so far07:40

bonsaitreeHas someone succeeded in making Viber work on Xubuntu?11:01
bazhangwhat is viber11:08
cfhowlettbonsaitree, install the per the site, it's been tested on ubuntu and fedora.  choose one.11:09
bonsaitreecfhowlett, This application failed to start because it could not find or load the Qt platform plugin "xcb"11:15
bonsaitreein "".11:15
bonsaitree. How do i install this plugin?11:15
pmjdebruijndoesn't the viper package have proper dependancies?11:16
pmjdebruijnsudo apt-get install -f11:16
pmjdebruijndoes that do anything?11:16
cfhowlettpmjdebruijn, nope. not in the repos, so may/may not function properly11:16
bonsaitreepmjdebruijn,No changes after running that command11:16
cfhowlettbonsaitree, sounds like something you should ask the publisher.11:17
pmjdebruijnlibqt5gui5:amd64: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/qt5/plugins/platforms/libqxcb.so11:18
pmjdebruijnI do have that file on 16.0411:18
bonsaitreeThe thing is i've managed to make Viber to work under Xubuntu somehow ~ 8-9 months ago. But the thing that is the most likely that i have done, is not doing the trick now11:18
bonsaitreepmjdebruijn, I do have it here: /opt/viber/plugins/platforms/libqxcb.so11:19
pmjdebruijndoes       QT_QPA_PLATFORM_PLUGIN_PATH=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/qt5/plugins/platforms /opt/viber/viber            work?11:19
pmjdebruijnor whatever it is installed11:20
bonsaitreepmjdebruijn, With the second 'viber' you are referring to the executable?11:22
pmjdebruijnindeed11:23
pmjdebruijnit's just the full path to the executable11:24
bonsaitreepmjdebruijn, https://paste.ubuntu.com/24453688/11:24
pmjdebruijnyeah sorry no clue11:25
pmjdebruijncrappy applications is exceptionally crappy11:25
bonsaitreepmjdebruijn, When all your friends are using it, you are trying to make it work under your OS ..11:26
pmjdebruijndon't they have a web version?11:26
bonsaitreepmjdebruijn, I think no11:26
pmjdebruijnbonsaitree: I would suggest asking about this in a knowledge specific channel, like for Qt for example11:27
bonsaitreepmjdebruijn, What is the channel name? Thanks btw11:27
pmjdebruijnno clue11:28
pmjdebruijndid you try #qt ?11:28
bonsaitreepmjdebruijn, Yeah, that's the channel11:28
pmjdebruijnif you find a solution, it would be a nice topic for a blog-post kinda thing, so others can find the solution11:29
bonsaitreepmjdebruijn, Yup, and it's very clever to write the fixes down, because after actively using Linux as a main os for 2 years, i start to get many deja-vus :D11:32
flocculantbonsaitree: when you saut it doesn't start - do you mean at all? because grabbing the package and installing it on 17.04 (though updated to 17.10) installs and starts fine - removed it now. That said I have some other qt4/5 apps installed AND some -dev packages. As pmjdebruijn says you likely need to talk elsewhere - you could try #ubuntu more eyes there, maybe someone is more likely to use it11:34
flocculants/when you saut/when you say11:34
pmjdebruijnbonsaitree: for running commercial apps, running 16.04 tends to work better, since vendors often test on that version11:35
flocculantpmjdebruijn: that ^^11:35
pmjdebruijnbut in the end it varies from vendor to vendor of course11:35
flocculantit says it is tested - very likely that means LTS11:35
bonsaitreeflocculant:When i click the Viber icon it says: "Failed to execute command "viber"". Failed to execute child process "viber" (No such file or directory).11:37
flocculantbonsaitree: then you have local issues - didn't even install any dependencies here - as I said try #ubuntu11:37
bonsaitreeflocculant, I've followed a web help page which states that you should edit the /usr/share/applications/viber.desktop, adding 2 lines: Exec=viber11:38
bonsaitreePath=/opt/viber11:38
flocculantgood luck11:38
bonsaitreeflocculant, The guys at #ubuntu are awesome, but they did not like to help me with Viber, i have also been told to not talk about Viber at all11:39
bonsaitreeflocculant, Thanks11:39
bazhangfully updated to 17.10 would be quite the treat11:42
cfhowletttrick?  or treat?11:43
bazhangstill no toolchain afaict11:43
pmjdebruijnbonsaitree: not everybody likes to hear about commercial software being broken11:48
bonsaitreepmjdebruijn, :D11:48
pmjdebruijnkeep in mind that #ubuntu and #xubuntu and Ubuntu and XUbuntu support channels11:48
pmjdebruijnnot Viber support channels11:48
pmjdebruijnand you are actually wanting Viber support, technically speaking11:48
pmjdebruijnwith the #ubuntu channel being often very busy, it's sometimes a matter of keeping the signal to noise ratio higher11:49
pmjdebruijnso I can understand where they are coming from11:49
bonsaitreepmjdebruijn, Yup, i agree11:50
bonsaitreeOkay, how do i do a full update to 17.10?11:59
bonsaitree(the internet is full of different commands for a distro update so i don't know which one to use)12:00
cfhowlettbonsaitree, jump in time machine.  go to October 2017 when it's released. download and install.12:00
cfhowlettOR ... use the current supported versions and wait - patiently - for 17.1012:01
bonsaitreeWell, someone broke the laws of physics: <flocculant> bonsaitree: when you saut it doesn't start - do you mean at all? because grabbing the package and installing it on 17.04 (though updated to 17.10) installs and starts fine - removed it now.12:01

bonsaitreeI don't know if others have reported this, but there is a video driver glitch in Xubuntu. I think its because of the kernel, since it started appearing after i updated to 4.8 kernel, although i was on 16.04.2 back then (3-4 days ago). However, it is present on 17.04 too. The glitch is that when you are alt+tab-ing or when you are doing something dynamic (browser scrolling, watching a video, etc), there is a trapezoid-like line (like a varying22:33
bonsaitreevoltage level lol) that is appearing on the middle of the screen. That was present in the past too, but it was a single line and it wasn't noticeable. Now it's trapezoid-alike and it's annoying, like it cuts through whatever dynamic you are doing/watching.22:33
