amichairwhen/how does a 16.10 system get notified about the 17.04 upgrade?11:41
hateballyou should have been already11:42
hateballassuming you havent hidden the muon updater plasmoid11:42
amichairhateball: where does the notification show up nowadays?11:43
amichairhateball: under 'Updates' in the system tray?11:43
hateballamichair: iirc yes (I dont use gui updater since long ago)11:43
BluesKajusually in the system tray if you have the notifier turned on11:43
hateballotherwise just open konsole and run: sudo do-release-upgrade11:44
amichairhateball: it says the system is up to date. I also usually just use apt, but that would trigger a notification as well in previous releases11:44
BluesKaj nope do sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade first then release11:45
amichairhateball: is there a known bug? anything I should try or look at regarding notification before manually upgrading?11:45
hateballamichair: well have a look in the apt config you arent looking for LTS releases only11:45
hateballnot that you should, being on 16.10 and all11:45
amichairhateball: I'm all updated and full-upgraded and restarted, but still no notification at any point11:45
BluesKajyeah, doudt that option is enabled11:45
amichairhateball: I looked in software-properties-kde, it says notifications for Normal releases not LTS. How do I check it via api config directly?11:46
amichairs/api/apt/11:46
hateballamichair: well that should read from the proper config11:46
amichairhateball: do you know where the config is?11:47
hateballin /etc/apt/something, lemme see11:47
hateballah I was wrong11:48
hateballamichair: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Upgrades#Upgrade_policy11:48
acheronUKhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/ZestyUpgrades/Kubuntu#Upgrade11:49
amichairPrompt=normal11:49
acheronUKRun the command there to upgrade11:51
amichairacheronUK: thanks, I'll do that but first I was curious why the notification never showed up, if my system is messed up or there is a bug that should be investigated/reported11:51
acheronUKThe bug is being looked at11:52
amichairacheronUK: oh it's a known issue?11:52
=== arek is now known as Guest36342
=== Guest36342 is now known as c_o_l
hateballacheronUK: interesting, I only ran "do-release-upgrade" and nothing else and it worked without issue12:02
amichairI see /var/lib/ubuntu-release-upgrader/release-upgrade-available does exist and mentions 17.0412:02
hateballdon't recall if I was running backports, but I assume that doesnt matter12:02
amichairnow I got motd to show it when sshing locally, but still no gui notification12:07
IrcsomeBot<acheronuk> @hateball, do-release-upgrade will also work. Just not a gui way12:19
IrcsomeBot<acheronuk> Discover just cant 'discover' it. All other methods of upgrade should be fine12:26
hateballThe irony :p12:30
amichairok, I'm upgrading with do-release-upgrade from terminal. Thanks guys.12:33

jsawyerhi guys13:28
jsawyeri'm a web developer, now i'm using windows 7 on my laptop13:29
jsawyeri want to switch Kubuntu13:29
jsawyeris this a good choice for me?13:29
jsawyermy laptop system properies are; core 2 duo (2.2 Ghz), 3 GB Ram and 1 GB NVIDIA13:31
mgolden_jsawyer: If you're a developer, using Ubuntu is way preferable to Window13:31
mgolden_Way easier to get and install the software you need.13:31
mgolden_sudo apt-get install mysql, and it's there13:31
jsawyeri'm using Ubuntu before13:31
mgolden_Kubuntu vs Ubuntu (or others) is somewhat a matter of taste13:31
hateballjsawyer: as for system specs, should have no worries there regardless of DE13:32
mgolden_Some would say that Kubuntu is a bit more windows-like, so a bit closer to what you are used to13:32
jsawyerbut unity is RAM monster13:32
jsawyeri want to PHP develop and record my screen13:32
jsawyeris KDE good choice for me?13:33
hateballjsawyer: You're the only one that can find that out13:34
hateballAs for screenrecording, I personally prefer OBS Studio which is not in official repos, but found here https://obsproject.com/download13:34
jsawyeri asked that question for my system specs, is Kubuntu good choice for my laptop?13:35
jsawyeroh yeah! i see obs but my choice is kazam. it's very easy and speedy13:35
hateballWell, if you're going to run a DB-server and various services... I personally would prefer to have a machine with 8GB ram13:36
hateballbut it all depends on the scope of things13:36
hateballScale, even13:36
hateballchromium alone uses 3.5GB ram on my machine atm13:37
jsawyerhatebal: yeah! you're right.13:37
hateballbut for *Kubuntu* your specs will work fine13:37
jsawyeroh my god! it's huge Ram usage o_O13:38
mgolden_It may be that chromium just uses as much ram as it can. It might not be a problem if you had less13:40
mgolden_3Gb is not a lot of ram nowadays, but I think you'll be okay.13:40
mgolden_Worth trying out13:40
mgolden_Download Kubuntu onto a high-speed thumb drive and try it out13:41
jsawyermgolden_ and hateball thanks alot for yours help13:42
jsawyerthis chanel is the best for help, i see13:42
hateballjsawyer: It's probably best/easiest if you just install onto a machine and then check back if you have any problems13:44
hateballIf things work just great, well then that's great13:44
jsawyeri used Debian (Wheezy and Jessy) before13:45
jsawyerDebian works perfect on my machine13:45
jsawyerbut Ubuntu is not good choice, becase Ubuntu (unity-de) is ram monster13:46
jsawyerafter i installed lubuntu13:46
jsawyerbut lubuntu doesn't hibernate13:46
jsawyerlubuntu is very good but it doesn't sleep when i want13:47
hateballjsawyer: They all have the same kernel, which allows for hibernation if your hardware supports it13:47
hateballSo it should work just fine regardless of DE13:47
jsawyeri think the problem is with my NVIDIA vard13:48
jsawyer*card13:48
mgolden_You may want to use the proprietary driver13:53
jsawyeryeah ok! i will try it after install Kubuntu13:54
BluesKajjsawyer, which nvidia gpu?13:54
jsawyerNVIDA GT 240M13:55
jsawyerNVIDIA*13:55
jsawyerhey guys! this is my last question the i stop it14:06
jsawyeris there anyone use vim for web development (front-end & back-end)?14:07
mgolden_I don't, but I know others who did14:10
sydjsawyer: I use vim, but not for web development. What's your question?14:10
mgolden_If you're on kubuntu, try kate14:10
hateballjsawyer: kate has vim bindings, and syntax hilighting etc14:11
jsawyersyd, is vim good choice for web development? it's my question14:11
hateballwhatever you're comfortable with using is a good choice :)14:11
jsawyeri tryed kate on windows, i think it's very good14:12
sydjsawyer: That really depends on your tastes. It has the advantage that it's everywhere, but you should really look at your workflow. If your ssh'ing to a server to make changes to a website, you're doing something wrong.14:12
Dragnslcrvim is never a good choice14:12
Dragnslcr</troll>14:12
sydPersonally, I would recommend something like CodeLite for PHP stuff (although make sure you install the 10.x version by adding the CodeLite repo, as recommended on the CodeLite website).14:13
DragnslcrBut yes, Kate is very good for a relatively basic text editor14:13
sydWith CodeLite you'll get code-completion etc...14:13
DragnslcrThere are a bunch of other full IDEs out there, but that isn't really a Kubuntu-specific question14:13
jsawyerDragnslcr, please stop talking! Go and play in the sand!14:15
jsawyersyd, now i'm using sublime text 3 but i'm interested about vim14:16
sydIt's good to know vim (at least how to do basic stuff) if you're going to be using Linux, but the learning curve can be steep, and it could hinder productivity if you use it as your primary IDE for development. As I mentioned above, you need to develop a solid workflow that's right for you. As Dragnslcr mentioned, this isn't really a Kubuntu specific topic.14:19
jsawyerhey thanx all you for helping!14:21
jsawyeri'm out!14:22
sydGood luck.14:22
