MarioMeyHi, there. I restored suspend mode of this Ubuntu-Mate 16.04 and the System Monitor applet is showing CPU at very high values. There is no process at that CPU shown on system monitor (after clicking in applet). But "top" shows me "cc1" twice, with very high percentage. Why? I'm not compiling anything...14:06
MarioMeyI have some programs open... but none processing or compiling.14:06
MarioMeyFirefox, Inkscape, Gimp, Blender, Telegram, Pidgin...14:06
alkisgMarioMey: run `which cc1`, to see its path, and then something like `dpkg -S /path/to/cc1`, to find the package14:13
alkisgOr, `ps faux` to see the tree of the processes, which also shows which process ran what14:13
rthorntonI went back to 16.04 from 17.04.  I think  17.04 is a big disappointment.14:25
Menzadorrthornton: Were you expecting more than a version bumps?14:26
Menzador*software version bumps?14:26
rthorntonMy view of 16.04 though is, its one of the very best PC based OS, I have ever used, and I go back to the mid 80's14:27
rthorntonwell packages are broken in 17.04 such as spyder14:27
MenzadorFile a bug? Use a PPA?14:28
rthorntonishould  say some pacakages14:28
rthorntonbut in 16.04, it just works14:28
rthorntoneverything works ut of the box14:28
alkisgLTS releases are more stable. So what else is new? :D14:29
rthorntonok, i agree14:29
alkisgThousands of developers _don't_ use non LTS releases :D14:30
rthorntonand I should have tried it in a VM first14:30
alkisgYup,good plan14:30
rthorntonI was feeling dangerous last weekend and I tried it, but after musch playing around, I went back to 16.0414:30
rthorntonI am a patreon supporter;  that wont change anytime soon, but I probably wont upgrade until next year on this netbook, ASUS 1015E.  I have a desktop using 16.04, and thats not changing until I am forced to upgrade it14:33
alkisgNah, 18.04 will be better :)14:34
alkisgUpgrade a few months after the 18.04 release14:34
alkisgE.g. when 18.04.1 is out14:34
rthorntonagreed14:37
quardSo how do I change the keyboard layout in ubuntu-mate again? I'm booting off live USB.16:55
MATE_allHello!17:22
quardtyping "loadkeys <keycode>" in a terminal window doesn't work, but "setxkbmap <keycode>" does. After clicking outside the terminal window to deselect it and clicking on it to select it again will reset the layout back to en-US.19:09
Akuliquard, whats the problem?19:21
Akulii just set my keyboard layouts with the keyboard setting thing in the menu19:21
quardit doesn't work for me19:24
quardI can't change it to anything other than en-US19:25
quardusing ubuntu mate 17.04 USB image live boot19:25
quardI tried adding my own layout and removing the english one, but that doesn't do anything19:26
Akulion 14.04 i have a checkbox that i can use to choose whether the setting can be different for each window19:28
Akuliif you leave both layouts there do you see a little layout changing thingy in the top right corner?19:28
quardyes19:28
quardthere's also a small keyboard icon that when right-clicked freezes the entire desktop for like 15 seconds19:30
Akuliclick the desktop and then choose the language19:33
Akuliif you open up a new window it should default to that language19:33
Akulithe checkbox should i mentioned also worl19:33
quardthe small icon that says "en" or some other country code does indeed change the layout, but only for the active window i.e. a terminal19:36
quardIs there a way to do it globally?19:36
Akulii just click the desktop and then choose the language19:37
Akuliit's weird but it works19:37
quardbecause I would expect the system to do so, if I leave a certain layout in the list as the only option19:37
Akulidid you try the checkbox?19:37
quardhmm let me try19:37
Akuliit works without it too19:38
Akuliyou just need to set it for the desktop and then for all active windows you have19:38
quardnope, clicking the desktop will cause the layout to switch to "en". I cannot change it any more19:38
Akuliit just doesn't change? that's weird 0_o19:39
Akulihave you tried the same thing in 16.04?19:39
quardnope, it stays on "en".19:39
quardI haven't19:39
Akuliif it works correctly there then this is a bug19:39
Akulican someone running 16.04 try this?19:40
Akulimaybe ouroumov?19:40
quardhold on, I'll need to download it and write it to a USB stick19:40
Akuliok19:40
quardbleh19:40
quard--cloudflare19:40
Akuli?19:41
quardoh sorry, it means I downvoted cloudflare19:42
quardok, downloading 16.04 LTS, gonna take a few mins19:43
Akuliok :)19:44
Akuliyou have a fast internet19:44
Akulithat would be at least an hour to me19:44
quardnot really19:44
quard30/4 isn't that fast any more in 201719:44
quardI know some dudes that have 100/100 fiber and even that's getting old19:45
alkisgquard: what's your desired layout?19:48
alkisgcat /etc/default/keyboard | nc termbin.com 999919:49
quardalkisg: si19:52
quardI'm using a live 17.04 USB image here19:52
quardso /etc/default/keyboard file should be unmodified19:53
quardperhaps this bug has already been fixed upstream, but is still present in the installation media19:53
alkisgIf you select the locale at the syslinux menu, then casper should make all the correct settings19:54
alkisgbbiab...19:54
Akuli/usr/share/doc/keyboard-configuration/README.Debian seems to say something about it19:54
quardokay, first things first. I'm gonna try 16.04 to see, if it has the same behavior19:56
quardand after that I'll install 17.04 and apt-get update && apt-get upgrade it to see whether it fixes the thing19:57
Akulii would just use 16.0419:59
Akuliit is after all lts19:59
quardyeah I was considering it too, gonna use this laptop for programming19:59
[fields]I just installed mate on my laptop and its great20:07
[fields]I have triple screens and multiple desktops.  I always wanted that20:07
quardnope20:08
quard16.04 keyboard layout selector works properly20:08
Akuliweird20:08
Akuliflexiondotorg20:08
quardhell I'll just stick with 16.0420:09
Akuliyeah good idea20:09
Akulii'm sticking with 14.04 :^)20:09
quard^^20:09
quardlucky me I have a keyring with like 7 USB keys on it with different OS' on them. comes handy often.20:13
Akulilol20:14
quardwin7, system rescue USB, ubuntu, arch, kali, tor, etc20:16
Akulii just have an ubuntu 14.04 stick20:18
Akulii can install everything i need on it20:19
