[12:43] Hi there .. [12:44] What's the progress on LXQT on Lubuntu ? [12:45] You can test the metapackage by yourself (lubuntu-qt-desktop) available since Xerus release :) [12:45] Thanks .. [12:45] But as it's being ported from Qt4 to Qt5 it still needs a "retouch" [12:46] Will it still run as fast as LXDE on the same hardware? [12:47] Yes [12:48] The Qt Team is optimizing the Qt core libraries to make it as fast as "old" gtk ones. [12:48] And our goal is to keep light but fully functional apps on top of that. [12:48] Qt is not 'heavyweight', really. just what some project do with it makes it so [12:49] Yes [12:49] i like the desktop because it doesn't get in your way, unlike the one that came out of Redmond :) [12:49] * acheronuk notes KDE plasma used about 1/2 the memory that Unity an Unity 8 did :P [12:50] A couple distros released LXQt desktops, I've tested and I don't like them, because of the customised environment. [12:50] as always, it's not what you've got, but what you do with it that matters. ;) [12:51] indeed [12:52] I have noticed how the system swaps out even when it has lots of available memory, I disabled swap and it runs fine :) [12:52] I don't even have a swap :) [12:53] I've got the system running on 13G partition .. [12:53] It's a 23 GB partition the system is 13 GB .. [12:54] enough [12:54] mine is 15 I think [12:54] Linux isn't a resource devouring OS really [12:54] Change of topic. I guess the systemd wars are over ? [12:58] yes :) [12:58] I haven't noticed a big difference myself, except maybe boot and shutdown times are a bit faster. [12:59] actually, new versions work better than upstart [12:59] there's some documentation here for "nostalgics": https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SystemdForUpstartUsers [13:00] It used to wait on 'waiting-on-network', I disabled some script and it boots a lot quicker. It's to do with a non-standard NIC, I think ? [13:00] it seems you did a good job [13:00] not for average users, though! :) [13:01] It's a cobbled together machine made out of old parts. [13:02] well done [13:02] I'm still 0n 16.04, time for an upgrade ? [13:03] I always recommend a fresh install but, unless you want an edge OS, or if you don't need to keep that system for any server reason, yeah, go ahead [13:05] I did run dist-upgrade and for what ever reason it decided to remove most of the installation. I did of course make a full back-up before. [13:06] that's wise. and that's why I recommend to fresh install re-using the home partition [13:06] so you get back all your preferences and settings [13:06] including ssh, pgp, and other keys [13:08] I've got a recovery system on a USB .. I've managed to squeeze MPV onto it, it actually runs faster than from the harddrive. https://mpv.io/ [13:08] sorry, lunch time! brb [13:09] "including ssh, pgp, and other keys" .. I don't have anything confidential on this machine. I always assume someone is monitoring me :) [13:09] ok gtg .. bye
