SolexHi00:00
JenshaeHello. I am out of my depth. I have a machine with an Intel NIC. I have found the driver for it but the install instructions require "make install". Lubuntu doesn't seem to have "make" by default.02:15
JenshaeHow do I get and transfer a "make" package over?02:15
guardianxwhat's the error message?02:17
guardianxwith which you determine that lubuntu doesn't have make?02:17
Jenshaehe program 'make' can be found in the following packages:02:18
Jenshae * make02:18
Jenshae * make-guile02:18
JenshaeTry: sudo apt-get install <selected package>02:18
JenshaeI can't run apt-get install on that machine because it doesn't have the NIC installed02:18
JenshaeIf I run "make install" on this machine it tries to alter the drivers on this one.02:19
guardianxahhh02:19
JenshaeIdeally, for my level of knowledge, I need a "make.deb" :P02:19
guardianxis the intel nic wireless?02:19

guardianxwell i'm no expert, no ideas here02:20

JenshaeWell at least we covered the FAQ and hopefully someone here will see this and know how to do it. :)02:21

JenshaeNow to try and bodge it into the old machine.02:34
JenshaeMakefile:121: *** Compiler not found. Stop.02:45
JenshaeRealised Ubuntu is probably closer than Debian so going to try http://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/i386/make/download02:46
JenshaeSoftware Installer says "No." I used "dkpg -i make-blah.deb"  and it said setting up, processing triggers and back to prompt03:02
JenshaeHowever, same "Makefile:121: *** Compiler not found. Stop."03:02

frodo654321Hi there ..12:37

freelancerbobhalo13:35
freelancerbobis there command, library to check what i have download or which folders have been filled ?13:36
freelancerbobbecause yesterday i had 18 GB free and now only 500 MB13:37
freelancerbobhalo is there command, library to check what i have download or which folders have been filled ? because yesterday i had 18 GB free and now only 500 MB13:39
antisfreelancerbob, afaik there is no ui existing, giving you the information you want. i would write a little sh-script and execute e.g. a 'du -hs' on directories recursively and order by size. if you simply run 'du -h', it will show you the size of any file inside a directory - you should be able to track big files/directories down by that… :)13:46
HootervilleDoes anyone know if one can run Facebook in Lubuntu?14:30

anna_Hi guys, im running lubuntu 17.04, fresh installation, but the system neither reboor nor shutdown ... who knows how to fix that? thanks17:01
lynoriananna_, any reason why what kind of hardware?17:03
lynorianwhat programs are you running when trying to shutdown or reboot17:04
anna_lynorian, no programs .. the problem is present even if im runnin the live17:04
lynoriananna_, video card type?17:05
anna_lynorian, it is just a fresh installation ... just turn on the pc, then turn off or reboot and the screen goes black ... that is all17:05
lynoriananna_, does pressing control alt f2 when shutting down do anything?17:05
anna_lynorian,alt f2 does nothing unfortunately17:06
lynoriancontrol alt f217:06
lynoriankeyboard leds change or no input and fan still runs?17:06
anna_lynorian, the laptop remains on ... the fun runs .. the leds are green ... the screen goes black17:07
lynoriananna_, you where shutting down from the menu right?17:08
anna_lynorian, yep ... i also tried to shut down from alt F1 terminal ... nothing different17:08
lynorian!md5sum |anna_17:09
ubottuanna_: To verify your Ubuntu ISO image (or other files for which an MD5 checksum is provided), see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM17:09
lynorianor with the live session you can do the test disk for defects17:10
anna_lynorian, the problem is with lubutu ubuntu mate xubuntu17:10
anna_so i dont think it is a iso problem17:10
lynorianaana_ did it do it with previous releases?17:11
anna_lynorian, I was running linux mint cinnamon before witouth this issue17:12
lynoriananna_, you should probably be able to run lubuntu 16.04 the long term support17:12
lynorianThis might be a hardware bug in the kernel :(17:13
lynorian!bug17:13
ubottuIf you find a bug in Ubuntu or any of its derivatives, please report it using the command « ubuntu-bug <package> » - See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs for other ways to report bugs.17:13
anna_lynorian, I was thinking to the kernel too .. I will install a previous version ... btw my system is a 4gb ram Intel Celeron N2840 / 2.16 GHz netbook (Acer es1 411) .. is there any significant difference in performance among mate xde and lxde?17:15
lynorianyeah lxde uses less memory but 4 GB is more than enough for all of them in reality17:17
lynorianI just got used to it after having it on my pentium IV with 512 MB that needed it17:17
anna_lynorian, -_-' well ... I was running ubuntu mate and, randomly, the system froze (expecially while watching a movie) .. the video froze and the sound looped and I was told that the reason was mate was to heavy for the my system17:19
lynoriananna_, can you run memtest from the live session ?17:20
anna_lynorian, Im not sure .. I think yes17:21
anna_do you think it is a ram issue?17:21
lynoriananna_, I would do so17:21
lynoriananna_, I do not know17:21
lynorianit crossed my mind17:21
lynorianafter it is not an iso issue but hard to diagnose problems like this happen with image issues but if it happens in ram17:22
anna_lynorian, do you think cinnamon is too heavy for the system? cuz I remember mint cinnamon worked good17:22
lynoriananna_, no 4GB should run anything unless it has so many desktop effects not gpu accelerated that it uses too much CPU as I have not dealt with the n celerons which are based on atom architexture actually17:23
anna_lynorian, ok =) thanks a lot for helping ... I will try with a lond term support distro =) enjoy your day17:26
JenshaeI am still struggling..17:45
JenshaeI need to build drivers on the machine they will be used on - https://downloadmirror.intel.com/15817/eng/README.txt17:45
JenshaeThey are NIC drivers. Anyone know a good way of getting Make install via USB?17:46
Jenshae"Makefile:121: *** Compiler not found. Stop." After I have tried moving .deb packages from the Ubuntu repository.17:47
speedfixerWhere is a current package/application list for Lubuntu?18:03
lynorianspeedfixer, on an installed system from command line or from other oses?18:04
speedfixerfrom the Lubuntu website18:04
speedfixer<sound of crickets> that's what I thought - nice friendly new web pages they have now - bye18:14
JenshaePeople don't really get IRC, do they?18:27
lynorianJenshae, have you tried installing build-essential?18:53
JenshaeLike this? http://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/build-essential18:53
JenshaeHow do a grab a full tree of files, the branching dependencies?18:54
lynorianJenshae, it is a .deb package that has the compilier18:54
JenshaeMy tired brain realised how good that link is.18:55
Unit193You have zero nic drivers?  I think apt-offline would be quite useful at this point..18:55
JenshaeApparently, if I run the Makefile then the NIC will work.18:57
JenshaeIt occurred to me. Does Lubuntu have a default C and C++ compiler?20:05
=== ricky_ is now known as Guest26790
lynorianJenshae, not on the image it is on a package20:17
JenshaeI am looking now at apt-offline to try and get the essentials across the NIC-less machine20:18
JenshaeJust so many dependencies after dependencies trying to do it manually.20:18
Guest26790Hi can't change cat /proc/sys/vm/swappiness as it seems lubuntu 16.10 does not have /etc/sysctl.conf  file to edit20:19
