[00:00] Hi [02:15] Hello. I am out of my depth. I have a machine with an Intel NIC. I have found the driver for it but the install instructions require "make install". Lubuntu doesn't seem to have "make" by default. [02:15] How do I get and transfer a "make" package over? [02:17] what's the error message? [02:17] with which you determine that lubuntu doesn't have make? [02:18] he program 'make' can be found in the following packages: [02:18] * make [02:18] * make-guile [02:18] Try: sudo apt-get install [02:18] I can't run apt-get install on that machine because it doesn't have the NIC installed [02:19] If I run "make install" on this machine it tries to alter the drivers on this one. [02:19] ahhh [02:19] Ideally, for my level of knowledge, I need a "make.deb" :P [02:19] is the intel nic wireless? [02:19] Ethernet, motherboard. [02:20] gee [02:20] well i'm no expert, no ideas here [02:20] https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/15817 [02:20] beyond google [02:20] https://downloadmirror.intel.com/15817/eng/README.txt [02:21] Well at least we covered the FAQ and hopefully someone here will see this and know how to do it. :) [02:22] Note useful: https://github.com/nylas/make-deb :P [02:22] Not* [02:26] warmer: https://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/162 [02:33] Huzzah! https://packages.debian.org/wheezy/i386/make/download [02:34] Now to try and bodge it into the old machine. [02:45] Makefile:121: *** Compiler not found. Stop. [02:46] Realised Ubuntu is probably closer than Debian so going to try http://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/i386/make/download [03:02] Software Installer says "No." I used "dkpg -i make-blah.deb" and it said setting up, processing triggers and back to prompt [03:02] However, same "Makefile:121: *** Compiler not found. Stop." [03:06] http://thebackroomtech.com/2008/11/03/fix-for-make-install-compiler-issues-with-intel-e1000-nic-driver-in-sles-10/ [03:15] Dependencies \o/ === guardianx is now known as _68k [05:16] Transferred dependencies, no errors and still make errors out. :( [12:37] Hi there .. [13:02] hello [13:35] halo [13:36] is there command, library to check what i have download or which folders have been filled ? [13:37] because yesterday i had 18 GB free and now only 500 MB [13:39] halo is there command, library to check what i have download or which folders have been filled ? because yesterday i had 18 GB free and now only 500 MB [13:46] freelancerbob, afaik there is no ui existing, giving you the information you want. i would write a little sh-script and execute e.g. a 'du -hs' on directories recursively and order by size. if you simply run 'du -h', it will show you the size of any file inside a directory - you should be able to track big files/directories down by that… :) [14:30] Does anyone know if one can run Facebook in Lubuntu? [15:35] quit [17:01] Hi guys, im running lubuntu 17.04, fresh installation, but the system neither reboor nor shutdown ... who knows how to fix that? thanks [17:03] anna_, any reason why what kind of hardware? [17:04] what programs are you running when trying to shutdown or reboot [17:04] lynorian, no programs .. the problem is present even if im runnin the live [17:05] anna_, video card type? [17:05] lynorian, it is just a fresh installation ... just turn on the pc, then turn off or reboot and the screen goes black ... that is all [17:05] anna_, does pressing control alt f2 when shutting down do anything? [17:06] lynorian, alt f2 does nothing unfortunately [17:06] control alt f2 [17:06] keyboard leds change or no input and fan still runs? [17:07] lynorian, the laptop remains on ... the fun runs .. the leds are green ... the screen goes black [17:08] anna_, you where shutting down from the menu right? [17:08] lynorian, yep ... i also tried to shut down from alt F1 terminal ... nothing different [17:09] !md5sum |anna_ [17:09] anna_: To verify your Ubuntu ISO image (or other files for which an MD5 checksum is provided), see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM [17:10] or with the live session you can do the test disk for defects [17:10] lynorian, the problem is with lubutu ubuntu mate xubuntu [17:10] so i dont think it is a iso problem [17:11] aana_ did it do it with previous releases? [17:12] lynorian, I was running linux mint cinnamon before witouth this issue [17:12] anna_, you should probably be able to run lubuntu 16.04 the long term support [17:13] This might be a hardware bug in the kernel :( [17:13] !bug [17:13] If you find a bug in Ubuntu or any of its derivatives, please report it using the command « ubuntu-bug » - See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs for other ways to report bugs. [17:15] lynorian, I was thinking to the kernel too .. I will install a previous version ... btw my system is a 4gb ram Intel Celeron N2840 / 2.16 GHz netbook (Acer es1 411) .. is there any significant difference in performance among mate xde and lxde? [17:17] yeah lxde uses less memory but 4 GB is more than enough for all of them in reality [17:17] I just got used to it after having it on my pentium IV with 512 MB that needed it [17:19] lynorian, -_-' well ... I was running ubuntu mate and, randomly, the system froze (expecially while watching a movie) .. the video froze and the sound looped and I was told that the reason was mate was to heavy for the my system [17:20] anna_, can you run memtest from the live session ? [17:21] lynorian, Im not sure .. I think yes [17:21] do you think it is a ram issue? [17:21] anna_, I would do so [17:21] anna_, I do not know [17:21] it crossed my mind [17:22] after it is not an iso issue but hard to diagnose problems like this happen with image issues but if it happens in ram [17:22] lynorian, do you think cinnamon is too heavy for the system? cuz I remember mint cinnamon worked good [17:23] anna_, no 4GB should run anything unless it has so many desktop effects not gpu accelerated that it uses too much CPU as I have not dealt with the n celerons which are based on atom architexture actually [17:26] lynorian, ok =) thanks a lot for helping ... I will try with a lond term support distro =) enjoy your day [17:45] I am still struggling.. [17:45] I need to build drivers on the machine they will be used on - https://downloadmirror.intel.com/15817/eng/README.txt [17:46] They are NIC drivers. Anyone know a good way of getting Make install via USB? [17:47] "Makefile:121: *** Compiler not found. Stop." After I have tried moving .deb packages from the Ubuntu repository. [18:03] Where is a current package/application list for Lubuntu? [18:04] speedfixer, on an installed system from command line or from other oses? [18:04] from the Lubuntu website [18:14] that's what I thought - nice friendly new web pages they have now - bye [18:27] People don't really get IRC, do they? [18:53] Jenshae, have you tried installing build-essential? [18:53] Like this? http://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/build-essential [18:54] How do a grab a full tree of files, the branching dependencies? [18:54] Jenshae, it is a .deb package that has the compilier [18:55] My tired brain realised how good that link is. [18:55] You have zero nic drivers? I think apt-offline would be quite useful at this point.. [18:57] Apparently, if I run the Makefile then the NIC will work. [20:05] It occurred to me. Does Lubuntu have a default C and C++ compiler? === ricky_ is now known as Guest26790 [20:17] Jenshae, not on the image it is on a package [20:18] I am looking now at apt-offline to try and get the essentials across the NIC-less machine [20:18] Just so many dependencies after dependencies trying to do it manually. [20:19] Hi can't change cat /proc/sys/vm/swappiness as it seems lubuntu 16.10 does not have /etc/sysctl.conf file to edit
