[12:14] morning [15:53] morning [15:53] for a little bit more at least [15:55] heh [16:09] cmaloney: how's pcon? [16:09] cmaloney: talks go well? [17:45] rick_h: Yeah, they went really well [17:45] PCon was quite good this time [17:45] Didn't do a whole lot of talks, but had a great time [17:47] Awesome [17:49] did you meet scalzi? [17:49] or listen to him? [17:59] I did not, sadly [17:59] I really didn't do a whole lot of the talks. [18:00] One of my friends tried to record part of it [18:00] so will see how that turned out [18:49] I swear we hit less panels each year. [18:51] Same [18:51] I hit less panels than I was hosting [18:52] Hit the Javascript one, the books one (which was amazing), and part of the Women in Tech one [18:52] Oh, and the Smithees [18:52] so, apparently I'm full of shit. :) [18:52] How was the js one? [18:53] It was unstructured, but it turned into some good conversation [18:53] Damn I like that kind. [18:53] Naturally started with the "Why the fuck is it 2017 and we're using JavaScript for everything" [18:53] That's what the tattoo one turned into and I though it ended up really good. [18:54] Nice [18:54] And yeah that's a pretty easy question to get some opposing opinions. [18:55] Oh totes [18:56] My biggest complaint is "yes, we know it sucks, but we have so much sunk cost into this" [18:56] so doing anything better is a non-starter [18:57] Though I'm sure some would argue that UNIX fits that model [18:57] In too deep. [18:57] I've seen a lot of "well we have js devs" a lot too. [18:57] Probably because I'm a js dev [18:57] Yeah, no worries there [18:57] I understand the history. I'm just wondering why we keep using the glue when we know the fumes get everyone high [18:58] Something something cool and hipster. [18:58] My biggest guess is barrier of entry really. [18:59] It's easy to learn with few real "rules" of development. [18:59] Well, I think the biggest thing is in order to do anything cool on a web browser you have to talk JS to it [18:59] There's no other way [18:59] other than adding plugins or other shit [19:00] It's like BASIC on the old micros. You can put whatever you want on it but eventually you'll get kicked back into BASIC [19:00] or VI [19:04] Yeah. [19:04] Build my own web browser. [19:05] With blackjack and hookers! [19:05] As one does [19:06] I'll build it in JavaScript. You'll have to do all your stylings in C [19:06] hah
