NewbHi guys. The site says to pick 32bit for old computers. My laptop is old-ish with weak specs but has 64bit09:29
NewbWhat should i pick?09:29
hateballNewb: what CPU do you have, and how much RAM?09:31
hateballIf you have at least 2GB ram, I'd say go for 64-bit09:31
NewbIt's just dualcore 2.20ghz with 4gb ram. 64bit then?09:32
NewbThanks, i guess the 64bit i was referrig to was my windows installation lol09:33
hateballNewb: yea 64-bit for sure09:33
hateballif you intend to run something like google chrome, that only has 64-bit builds these days for instance09:33
NewbAwesome thank you. I tried out linux mint but it's preeeetty laggy. Hoping this one's alright :)09:34
hateballNewb: define laggy? If it's UI lagginess, that could be if the DE uses 3D effects09:36
hateballand you have a slow GPU or so09:36
NewbI see. Mostly the apps freeze sometimes and takes a log time to react per click. I haven't updated the software and drivers yet though, but when i did try it still took forever so i figured I'll try out anoher distro.09:37
hateballNewb: What GPU does the machine have?09:38
hateballIntel/AMD/nVidia09:38
leszekNewb: should run more fluid on lubuntu also because it uses zram so more stuff can be stored in ram09:38
leszekNewb: in general if you have the option upgrade to an ssd. They are cheap nowadays and do miracles09:39
hateballyes, SSD is probably the single biggest upgrade you can give your machine09:39
NewbIt' one of those onboard intel graphics but the ones older than HD, actually have little idra. I have high hopes for lubuntu though since it's talked up as lightweight. In any case I'll retreat to puppy linux if it still won't do haha09:40
NewbI think lubuntu will work though. I remember running regular ubuntu alright with this laptop09:41
leszekNewb: ah extreme graphics 4500 something like that09:42
leszekNewb: pro tip don't use sna acceleration on them. With SNA acceleration it runs slow as hell09:42
NewbI'll keep that in mind. Thanks all!09:43
leszekNewb: just a sec I am searching for my Xorg.conf on my older laptop which switches to uxa or exa (I don't know exactly but the better acceleration for these older chips)09:43
hateballhttps://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=218203309:43
leszek ah exactly hateball was quicker09:44
NewbThanks! Bookmarked it on phone. Definitely sounds like it would have been a headache incoming. Thanks!09:45
hateballMy google-fu is hard to beat ;p10:19
