PristineHello!! Just got a New system, but it crashed during the network-setup... then it aborted the rest of the install and has locked me into the "guest" account.  Online web pages say to hold shift to get to the boot menu for a recovery-concole, but that's not working and it just boots into anyways.  What do I do to create a user/password?00:04
MiguelFullerikonia: it didn't say00:04
ikoniaMiguelFuller: very unlikley00:04
MiguelFullerikonia: then I changed it to manual but still slow00:05

ikoniaMiguelFuller: that card must be the worst example of a network card if it doesn't advertise basic information00:14
ikoniaMiguelFuller: what is the chipset on the card00:14
MiguelFullerikonia: I don't know is there a command? netgear doc I think it says unspecified00:15
ikoniaMiguelFuller: it shouldn't matter for basic link speed, but are you using "sudo" and what is the EXACT command you are running00:17
MiguelFullerikonia: ethool? just sudo ethtool enp2s000:19
ikoniaMiguelFuller: that card must suck card00:20
ikoniahard00:20
MiguelFullerikonia: it was good in xp00:21
MiguelFullerikonia: is there another drive I can use to try out my luck00:22
ikoniaMiguelFuller: "it was good in XP" doesn't really mean it's a good and well supported linux card00:22
ikoniaMiguelFuller: another "drive" ?00:22

Bashing-omPristine: If this new system is EFI, it is the escape key that grub recognizes. spam the escape key as soon as the firmware clears ( 3 second window of oportunity ) . From the recovery mode one can work .01:00
PristineYes, Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.  It needed to finalize the install (Create account, name the PC, etc), but when it asked for the wireless info, it crashed and never created the account.01:00

Anonym0usthanks ChaiTRex, 2) how do i find out if software installed on my computer reports anything such as crash reports and so on?01:46
ChaiTRexAnonym0us: I'm not sure. By default, a crash should ask you whether you want to.01:46

Anonym0usnope BUT i would like to install a software that needs contrib01:49
Anonym0us(i think..) virtualbox it is01:49
ChaiTRexAnonym0us: Mixing Debian and Ubuntu repositories is a bad idea. Enabling multiverse in Ubuntu should do it, according to the last URL I gave.01:50
ChaiTRexAnonym0us: At least according to that, multiverse is the union of contrib and non-free, so you should get contrib's software through that.01:51
Anonym0usso how do i install virtualbox on ubuntu, i might ask duckduckgo before asking here.. 2 sc01:51
ChaiTRexAnonym0us: Follow along here: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads (note that contrib there is VirtualBox's contrib, not Debian's or Ubuntu's).01:53

ChaiTRexAnonym0us: It's what they named the repository.01:55

midhuni installed ubuntu 14.04 and audio is not working02:35
YankDownUnderAnonym0us, If you merely run the commands I gave to you - and WAIT...let it complete it's course, you should have no further issues with "unmet dependencies". Worry about that first, and then move on to the next issue.02:35
Anonym0uswell i have upgraded, but i am still curious about why they so suddenly need to???02:36
YankDownUndermidhun, https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure02:37
YankDownUnderAnonym0us, It's merely a command - it's using apt to "fix" broken packages through an installation - correcting (hopefully) that issue - it's upgrading any other packages that might have "choked" in among the other issues of "unmet dependencies" - as is often the issue. Does that make sense?02:38

YankDownUnderLetterRip, Then that's something to "dig into" - as 17.04 is a recent release and not an LTS release...I'm sure there are reasons for that...but that means digging into the wikis/forums, matey.03:00
meesumi searched in the dash and the only relevant result wasiced tea webcontrol panel03:00
YankDownUndermeesum, Being that I do not use Unity (hate Unity, really) - there should be (as it's in the repos) a "Unity Control Center" that should be able to be accessed - what it's called in "Dash" - I do not know...but it does exist and should be already installed by default...03:02

GolfgeoHi all! :-) Got a question: My dual monitor setup is weird and my left and right screens are reversed on the login screen. Is this because of how the videocard assignes "numbers" to the screens or is this set in config when one installs the system? I'm looking to "swap" the screens to there proper left and right orientation even for the login screen.04:15
GolfgeoSo atm my right screen is identified as #1 and my left one is identified as #2.04:16
YankDownUnderGolfgeo, You can always reconfigure the layout of the monitors with "xrandr" - and create a permanent setup with that...that is, unless you can get it setup through the "Displays" prefs in your control center04:16
GolfgeoYankDownUnder: It's not the layout, but the more lowlevel assignment of "monitor number" that I'm looking to correct04:18
GolfgeoIt's just weird that my mouse won't move over to the left screen when moving it to that left screen.04:18
GolfgeoIf I want the login screen to appear on that left screen I need to cross the right edge of my right monitor... weirdness!04:19
YankDownUnderGolfgeo, I had the same issue, and used "arandr" and "xrandr" to resolve the issues from a boot(ing) script.04:22
GolfgeoYankDownUnder: Did you find out if those numbers where originating from the underlying "video drivers", in other words the board layout of the GPU, or that they where assigned by X?04:23

YankDownUnderEpicCyndaquil, I actually do quite a number of "server" installs in VM's (VirtualBox)...and the only time I've had issues is when the settings for the VM were incorrect...other than that, fairly flawless...04:25
GolfgeoYankDownUnder, then they must be configurable in some xorg.conf file. Well, I would say... Haven't worked with multi monitor setups in yeaaaars... So all my knowlidge is ancient by now... :)04:25

YankDownUnderEpicCyndaquil, Strange that.04:27
YankDownUnderresearcher123, And you HAVE installed the Virtualbox Guest Additions into the VM?04:28
researcher123YankDownUnder: yes I did04:28
YankDownUnderresearcher123, And it's safe to assume you've rebooted the VM yadda yadda yadda...?04:29
researcher123YankDownUnder: yes04:29
DF3D2researcher123, did you set it to NAT or bridge mode in the network adapter ?04:29
DF3D2i'd use bridge mode04:29
DF3D2so that your vm isnt double nat04:30
researcher123network04:30
DF3D2it will be an option in the vm network adapter04:30
DF3D2on the host side04:30
YankDownUnderYeah - it's in "bridged" => I'd think about checking the virtual network adapters on the host machine...just to be sure...and also checking the state of the firewall on the host...again, just to be sure...04:30
DF3D2please give us an overview of your network04:31
DF3D2is it a simple /24 with a router?04:31
researcher123ok. let me write please04:31
midhunyankdownunder it opened volume control04:32
YankDownUndermidhun, Yes, it should have...and did you change any of the controls and test to see if you have sound?04:32

midhunyes yankdownunder i tried04:34
midhunYankdownunder but still there is no audio04:34
DF3D2midhun, pulseaudio ?04:35
YankDownUndermidhun, You've checked all the hardware, and checked all the settings, you've checked either a video or audio file, mucked with the controls to see if things might possibly be on "mute" - right?04:35
DF3D2check alsamixer04:36
DF3D2from command line04:36
DF3D2non muted stuff will show 00 at the bottom04:36
DF3D2muted is MM04:36
midhunE:[pulseaudio] pid.c :Daemon already running04:37
DF3D2the state of the sound on linux is pretty terrible i'm sad to say04:37

glachasDF3D2: Again same problem04:46
YankDownUnderresearcher123, Check the host system - the firewall and the "virtual network interfaces" - one way of doing so - where you would see any errors - is by opening a terminal and typing: sudo systemctl restart networking ==> that would show if there are any direct errors with the host networking...next would be to suss out the firewall - see if that's somehow blocking anything...04:47
DF3D2researcher123, i wanted to know how your network in general is configured04:47
DF3D2if you do a bridge network between the host/guest and set a static IP on your LAN it should "just work"04:47
YankDownUnderDF3D2, Yeah - he showed it was a bridged setup in VB...ergo, looking outside of VB for a possible answer to the issue...04:48
DF3D2YankDownUnder, ok he never answered me when i asked for a network diagram04:49
DF3D2it is unlikely a firewall is blocking inside > out http requests though04:50
cyberpolicei am on ubuntu 17.04 livecd and i cannot install programs?04:50
DF3D2especially if it isn't for the host OS04:50

DF3D2im wondering if xchat isn't in the repo's for 17.04 yet04:52

cyberpolicebut if it cannot find xchat, it also cannot find gsmartcontrol. so what to do04:53
cyberpolicewhat kind of ubuntu livecd is this04:54
DF3D2researcher123, lol you just tell me what your network is04:54
DF3D2but can you possibly ping 8.8.8.8 on the guest?04:54

DF3D2IE: 192.168.1.X04:55
cyberpolicePipeItToDevNull: like i said, i cannot on ubuntu 17.04 livecd. because when i do apt-cache search gsmartcontrol i get error: E: Package 'gsmartcontrol' has no installation candidate04:56
DF3D2@cyberpolice, do you need to use 17.04 ?04:56

cyberpolicePipeItToDevNull: and it also does it for xchat: E: Unable to locate package xchat04:56

DF3D2cyberpolice, just use 16.04 for the time being04:56

cyberpoliceDF3D2: well im trying to do hdd recovery. i have main computer 14.04 installed to disk and it cannot see my usb to ide/pata adaptor properly because of old kernel 3.13... so i said ok i try newest kernel... that means 17.0404:57
cyberpoliceand it shows up here04:57
cyberpolicebut now i cannot install things i want04:57
cyberpoliceso... should i make a new livecd?04:57

YankDownUndermidhun, You're on 14.04 - has the sound ever worked at all on this installation of 14.04?04:59
midhunno05:00
midhunthis is a new laptop.i got it preinstalled with ubuntu 16.0405:00
DF3D2researcher123, how is your VM getting an Ip address?05:00
YankDownUndermidhun, And have you tried using 16.04? Just asking...14.04 is a bit, um...old...05:00
midhunat that time audio was working05:00
DF3D2is it dynamically assigned by your dhcp server or is it a static(manually set by you) Ip address?05:00
YankDownUndermidhun, So sound worked in 16.04 but you're using 14.04...is that what I understand?05:01
DF3D2@midhun, you removed 16.04 and installed 14.04 ?05:01
DF3D2for the love of.... why05:01
midhunyes05:01
DF3D2please explain why05:01
researcher123DF3D2: its set as automatically detect settings05:01
midhuni wanted php5 .and it seems ubuntu 16.04 support only php705:02
YankDownUnderSo there exists the possibility that the audio drivers do NOT exist for 14.04...05:02
DF3D2researcher123, does your network have a DHCP server? how is your host OS getting an ip address ?05:03
DF3D2this is why i asked for you to explain your network05:03
DF3D2im not in to playing guess the network-config05:03
YankDownUnderresearcher123, Something to consider - set the networking to static in the Windows VM you've created...yet another thing to chuck into the mix...05:03
DF3D2YankDownUnder, yep i mentioned that about 20 minutes ago :-(05:04
DF3D2but he never did answer my questions05:04
YankDownUnderDF3D2, Re-iteration...s'all good...(my cup of care is nearly empty)05:04
DF3D2researcher123, does the windows VM currently have an IP address at all ?05:04
researcher123yes05:05
DF3D2and what is that address ?05:05
Anonym0usdo anyone know why youtube-dl was not permitted to make any new updates to apt after 2016 02 22?05:05
researcher123let me check please05:05
obfusteHello trying to make live usb. Used dd command that worked in past. Tried to boot and got  "media test failure" "invald partition table"05:05
DF3D2Anonym0us, might have gotten legal threats from google05:05
obfusteshould I have formatted the usb drive as one long partition first? It had fat32 by default with some free space05:06
DF3D2obfuste, what DD command are you running exactly ?05:06
obfustethe one here: https://antergos.com/wiki/install/create-a-working-live-usb/05:07
obfusteit worked before to make a Xubuntu live usb05:07
DF3D2create a new partition table on the USB drive05:07
DF3D2and try the command again05:07
DF3D2did you check the md5 of the downloaded iso ?05:07
obfusteyes iso is good05:08
obfustechecked them all when I got them05:08
DF3D2also doing dd if=/whatever of=/whatever bs=1M will speed up DD often05:08
Anonym0usDF3D2: its a tool to download videos, i can't really not imagine why it would be a direct thread from google except that it has "youtube" in its name.. i think it had something to do with ffmpeg but i am not sure05:08
obfuste1o 1M is better than 4M?05:08
DF3D2oh i didnt see he had 4m in the command05:08
DF3D2i always just do 1M and havent seen a big different doing more05:08
obfusteshould I reformat the drive and try again?05:09
obfustecould the free space in front be a problem?05:09
DF3D2use fdisk05:09
obfusteuse it how?05:09
DF3D2and write a totally new partition table05:09
obfusteim a noob05:09
DF3D2what are you using to format the drive05:09
obfustei can follow directions but understand little05:09
obfusteGnome Disks05:09
DF3D2open a terminal05:09
obfustewell actually I didnt format this one at all as it came out of the box with fat3205:09
obfusteok terminal open05:10
obfustered 4 standing by05:10
DF3D2sudo fdisk -l05:10
DF3D2that lists partitions05:10
DF3D2what disk are you working on ?05:10
obfustesdb105:11
DF3D2so, sudo fdisk /dev/sdb05:11
Ben64are you doing dd to sdb1?05:11
DF3D2yeah make sure you are doing it to /dev/sdb05:11
DF3D2you want the DISK not a specific partition05:11
DF3D2which one did you do before05:12
obfusteit says "command:"05:12
DF3D2"o" creates a new empty dos partition table05:12
obfustei didnt do antyhing before...the drive was formatted. I plugged it in and dd'd the iso to it05:12
researcher123DF3D2: windows not have any ip address05:12
Ben64unnecessary to do that, dd will overwrite it05:12
DF3D2Ben64, I know that but i've seen usb disks get buggered up somehow before05:13
obfusteok confused now...what do I do?05:13
bray90820So the service is clearly running but systemctl still says failed05:13
bray90820https://pastebin.com/raw/sFvwEchJ05:13
DF3D2where this "seemed to help"05:13
obfustegoal is to write a live usb with dd as before05:13
DF3D2obfuste, yes but answer Ben64 question05:13
DF3D2did you do /dev/sdb1 or /dev/sdb05:13
DF3D2in the dd command05:13
Ben64yeah that's important05:13
obfustehonestly I dont know05:13
DF3D2do it again with /dev/sdb05:14
obfustehow do i pull up terminal history05:14
DF3D2"history"05:14
DF3D2history | grep dd05:14
B105PH3REwhat package has ffprobe in ubuntu 12.04 sources?05:14
tekdkdoman history helps too05:14
obfustei dd'd to sdb1 before...was that wrong?05:14
cyberpopohello DF3D2 . i am on 16.04 livecd now. and i still cannot able to install gsmartcontrol here on this livecd: E: Package 'gsmartcontrol' has no installation candidate05:14
obfustethats what came up in fdisk -l05:14
DF3D2yes you ran DD on a PARTITION not the DISK05:14
DF3D2 /dev/sdX = disk /dev/sdx# = partition05:15
DF3D2do you understand the difference ?05:15
obfusteoh so thats the problem right? just redo it with sdb?05:15
obfusteyes05:15
DF3D2yes thats the issue05:15
DF3D2good catch Ben6405:15
cyberpopoDF3D2: also, E: Unable to locate package xchat05:15
obfustedo I need to do anything to prepare before doing dd again or just rerun properly this time?05:15
DF3D2researcher123, so do you have a DHCP server on your network or not? (the thing that hands out ip addresses to any device that asks for one)05:15
DF3D2no just rerun it05:16
obfusteand should usb be mounted?05:16
obfusteor does it matter05:16
DF3D2Ben64, was correct it will copy the partition table it needs, because dd works on a block level05:16
DF3D2the usb should NOT be mounted05:16
obfusteok thanks guys...will try again and report back05:16
cyberpopoon 16.04 livecd, why cant i install xchat thru sudo apt-get install xchat: E: Unable to locate package xchat .... i have done sudo apt-get update05:18
obfustemost guides say 4M...whats the best M to use?05:18
YankDownUndercyberpopo, Um...because it's deprecated and Hexchat is the default...?05:18
cyberpopooh05:18
obfustethats MB/s writing speed right?05:18
researcher123DF3D2: https://imagebin.ca/v/3Mr9GvQF3UfT05:18
cyberpopoi do not know these things05:18
DF3D2obfuste, honestly just use anything between 1-405:19
DF3D2and dont concern about it05:19
DF3D2you are making this too difficult lol05:19
researcher123:'(05:19
cyberpopoYankDownUnder: i tried to install hexchat: E: Unable to locate package hexchat05:19
cyberpopowhat is happening...05:19
obfustehow am I making it difficult? The guide said 4M and you said 1M...just asking whats the difference05:19
cyberpopowhy having so much trouble finding simple packages05:19
obfustecant learn without asking05:20
YankDownUndercyberpopo, You're on a "livecd" - a CD or a USB?05:20
cyberpopoim on a liveusb05:20
YankDownUndercyberpopo, Right...and was the USB set up with "persistence"?05:20
DF3D2you likely need to add whatever to your /etc/apt/sources.list05:21
DF3D2is it multiverse still?05:21
cyberpopoi dont know. but i never had to do this on 14.04 livecd05:21
YankDownUnderDF3D2, Should be...05:21
obfustealso how can I make a live usb with persistence using DD...can't find a clear guide05:21
DF3D2cyberpopo, google how to add multiverse to apt05:21
cyberpopoto setup "persistance"05:21
DF3D2that is likely your answer05:21
cyberpopook thanks05:21
DF3D2obfuste, i dont remember exactly but i think that is an option once you have booted up05:22
obfustethanks will look for it05:22
obfusteif I did it right and it works that is05:22
cyberpopoDF3D2: yes this was the solution. thank you i have now installed gsmartcontrol05:23
cyberpopowhy is multiverse not selected by default05:23
DF3D2don't know tbh05:23
YankDownUndercyberpopo, Not sure...strange that...05:23
cyberpopois it because of stallman05:23
DF3D2i think its licensing issues05:23
cyberpopoi knew it05:23
DF3D2where they put the onus on the user to "activate it"05:23
DF3D2so that ubuntu isnt responsible for it05:23
cyberpopoi see05:24
cyberpopoi bet yo that was also the case with 17.0405:24
cyberpopowhen i couldnt find anything there either05:24
DF3D2cyberpopo, very possible05:24
DF3D2i looked up "xchat"05:24
DF3D2which said it didnt exist for 17.0405:25
DF3D2but hexchat might05:25
obfusteso i found a guide to add peristence and it said to open gparted after the dd to partition the remaining space and I got this error "nvalid partition table - recursive partition on /dev/sdb.05:25
obfustedoes that mean I borked the dd again somehow?05:26
DF3D2paste the exact dd command you ran05:26
obfustei did it as above....05:26
obfustelet me try and boot from it and see if that was a gparted issue...when will deal with persistance later...brb05:27
DF3D2wait what does this even mean ?05:27
DF3D2d after the dd to partition the remaining space05:27
DF3D2what does that mean ?05:27
cyberpopois it possible to see disk usage: free space/used space without mounting drive05:28
DF3D2you cant go screwing with that drive after you run DD on it05:28
DF3D2or it is likely not going to boot05:28
DF3D2cyberpopo, dont think so, how would the system read that?05:28

CyberTexHello people, I have a persistent problem with PEAP authentication . Yesterday I got it to work using a workaround described here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/1578589 . Now not even this work around is working. It has become so time consuming. I spent an average of 4 hours a day search   for a fix this week. I don't care what's the cost , I need to fix this. My team leader is frustrated with the situ07:43
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1578589 in network-manager (Ubuntu) "Add support for <none> as inner authentication in PEAP" [Undecided,Expired]07:43
CyberTexHelp me finish this once and for all?07:43
ducasseCyberTex: you don't really have a lot of good options. first of all you should track down what causes this problem and if/in what version it is fixed.07:46
CyberTexhey ducasse :) . I don't use this laptop outside of the company . Wifi is already broken, what's there to lose :(. So, let's downgrade wpa_supplicant and see what happens, no?07:48
ducasseCyberTex: you can certainly try, at your own risk. do you know of a version this works in?07:49

CyberTexYankDownUnder: Error: Connection activation failed.07:55
YankDownUnder"convert" is part of the ImageMagick suite of utils07:55
ducasseYankDownUnder: it will be overwritten on updates if it's from a package07:55

ducassenisseni: what you're looking for is dpkg-divert07:56
YankDownUnderducasse, Yes...true that...unless one removes "ImageMagick" and all it's bits and bobs...and relies only on what one installed to sit in /usr/local/bin...but it ain't me...just offering a quickie bandage07:56
YankDownUnderCyberTex, I'm not a fan nor user of PEAP - just ran across that and chucked it in the air, mate...07:57

YankDownUnderCyberTex, When you say "downgrade" - is that along the lines of removing the network manager, compiling from source? Just curious08:02
YankDownUnderCyberTex, I just thought of something, too...if you install "strongSwan" for "NetworkManager" - along with the PEAP plug-ins for "strongSwan" - wouldn't that achieve the same goal?08:06
strkI enabled the system monitor and the Network graph is all filled by what looks like being the "local" color. How can I debug what's the "local" traffic ?08:06
CyberTexBen64: It's so painful to see that only modren users of Ubuntu 16.04 and 17.04 suffering from this issue in our department but Mac users , android users , Windows users, old versions of ubuntu workin . But yours doesn't. I need wifi connection in our daily meetings. I just sit there like a potato :P for an hour then apologize that I need to leave because I have no connection. It's a good excuse to leave them , but not so productive.08:07
YankDownUnderCyberTex, (read what I wrote so I don't have to repeat)08:08
wawa08:08
CyberTexYankDownUnder:  never heard of strongswan How do I install it ? Why would one think this would solve the issue?08:09
YankDownUnderCyberTex, Look in "Synaptic" - or, you can search/install in the terminal: sudo apt-get -y install strongswan-nm08:10
nisseniducasse: yeah, it's a part of Imagick08:11
nisseniSo I can't simply create an alias of some sort?08:12

Ben64CyberTex: theres a reason it's not supported here08:13
CyberTexsheesh ok08:13
YankDownUndernisseni, If the /usr/local/bin/convert is NOT part of ImageMagick - and it's part of another package, can you not merely rename THAT binary to something...or please describe a bit more fully what exactly you're wanting to do...?08:13
ducassenisseni: as i said, dpkg-divert is the correct way to do this. if you just replace the file with a symlink or something it will be overwritten on next update.08:13

beanbagulaBen64: Are the ones in the repo ?08:14
Ben64they all are08:14
beanbagulaBen64: What are they called ?08:14
ducassenisseni: or just make sure /usr/local/bin comes before /usr/bin in the PATH (unless convert is called with full path)08:15
Ben64beanbagula: nvidia-<version> usually08:15
nisseniYankDownUnder: on the production server the convert file lies in /usr/bin but on my local development it lies under /usr/local/bin - so I would simply like to use the same link in the code08:15

beanbagulaBen64: Thanks.08:16
nisseniducasse: no, vice versa08:17
Ben64nisseni: or something like if [ -e /usr/bin/convert ]08:17
ducassenisseni: or just use a symlink. this is why i asked if it was an existing file - you said yes.08:18
nisseniYeah, symlink is what I was looking for, thanks08:19
Ben64or just make the code better instead of putting a weird symlink in a system directory08:19
CyberTexBen64:  I know, brother . What else can I do ? I need wifi ,  all the workarounds are becoming so time consuming. Ubuntu 17's  wpa_supplicant is behind for two versions. frostschutzjcderhb, maybe wrong keyboard layout?11:26
jcderhbmaybe11:27
jcderhbcan i change luks passphrase afterwards easily ?n11:28
frostschutzluks supports " (and all characters really) just fine. it may not be the case for a frontend (but that would be a bug). keyboard layout issues are common though, for that reason I add my passphrase twice, once in US layout and once in my own, so either one will be accepted11:28
SwedeMikejcderhb: I'm not saying that is the cause, but I would advice against using similar special characters in luks passphrase, you run into higher risks of triggering bugs11:28
SwedeMikejcderhb: you can boot inte live system and add a passphrase from CLI.11:28
SwedeMikeinto11:28
CoderEuropejcderhb, try copy & paste :)11:29
SwedeMikejcderhb: this would most likely solve your problem, you would use the first passphrase to add a second one, then you can use this second one normally11:29

zzzedtimetrex: sure, sec22:39
hfgdbhttps://askubuntu.com/questions/905288/extremely-slow-connection-after-17-04-update does not resolve my issue22:40
sirru5hzzzed, I found I learned the most fixing my goof ups22:40
zzzedtimetrex: I suggest you use an 'old PC' (spare) to handle all of your domain resolution; it is easier and reduces the load elsewhere;22:40
sirru5hhfgdb, I haven't forgotten about ya22:41
zzzedtimetrex: there is a special installation of Ubuntu called "smoothwall" that does just that; https://www.smoothwall.com/22:41
hfgdb:)22:41
zzzedtimetrex: basically, you throw that (distro; download CD/DVD; install. pretty basic) and it "handles DNS" and22:41
timetrexzzzed, could i just install it in a vm?22:41
zzzedtimetrex: you can configure it to fwd ports to diff machines "inside" your external IP addy22:42
zzzedtimetrex: you *could* but, I do not recommend that. Srsly, you only need a really old crappy computer, and it will simplify your life a lot22:42
zzzed'coz it just "handles the internet" stuff;22:42
timetrexlol22:42
timetrexok thanks22:42
zzzedyou don't even need a screen on it;22:42
timetrexmuch help22:42
zzzedyou can browse to it, and...22:42
zzzedit'll do caching, and firewalling, and everything22:43
zzzedalternative, you can buy a firewall box to do same22:43
zzzedbut "software firewalls" are crap, so...22:43
timetrexthank you zzzed22:43
zzzedrunning it in a VM is, effectively, a 'software firewall'22:43
zzzedthe nice part is, if you use a different (old) computer,22:43
zzzedyou can forget all about "internet connection" stuff, and just connect to that addy (192.168.0.1 usually) for all your internet goodness,22:44
zzzed...and let that old PC handle all the 'translation' crap22:44
zzzedit is free, BTW. I am not spamming22:44
zzzed(free for personal use, anyway. There is a commercial version)22:45
zzzedsirru5h: you still here? wanted to tell you a brief anecdote22:46
sirru5hI'm here bud searching about for hfgdb22:46
zzzedsirru5h: in about 1982, on my "ZX Spectrum" home computer, I first learned assembly programming;22:46
sirru5hso I can maybe lend some assistance to him as well22:47
hfgdbThank you22:47
zzzedsirru5h: I wrote a program to move a "*" across the screen; I spent many hours trying to find out why it didn't seem to work22:47
zzzedsirru5h: eventually, I worked out, it was just going too fast to see, so I had to put in a long delay loop22:47
zzzedsirru5h: then...well....irony. I wanted to learn it so things went *fast* - and I had to slow it down22:48
zzzedend of anecdote22:48
zzzeddid hfgdb post that speed-test I said? if so, I missed it22:48
zzzeddoesn't look like she did22:49
sirru5hhfgdb, what does your /etc/systemd/resolved.conf look like?22:51
vachocan someone tell me what this is? and why it's taking so much space? /dev/xvda1      7.8G  6.1G  1.4G  83% /22:51
sirru5hzzzed, yeah I been really studying hard I kinda rediscovered my passion for computers lately. So I been reading 300 pages in one night, its like college days22:52
hfgdbeverything is commented out22:52
=== ifro_ is now known as awayfro
zzzedsirru5h: for future reference; to do the 'cube' type things; first, in Ubuntu 'preferences' you 'enable workspaces' (checkbox)22:53
=== larry is now known as Guest43399
zzzedhfgdb: that's OK, that's normal22:53
sirru5hhmmm i thought maybe dnssec=on that'd cause that issue22:54
hfgdbgood22:54
zzzedsirru5h: I have made some progress, er. i can 'zoom out' and see 4 desktops now22:55
sirru5hhmm and you did reboot after the update right?22:55
sirru5h( upgrade actually)22:56
sirru5hzzzed, well done my machine here that I use everyday is literally running an external HD and no HDD in it22:58
zzzed_ooh, I crashed. Cool23:00
sirru5hhfgdb, everything which I am finding keeps pointing to resolved.conf23:02
hfgdbno problem, thank you :)23:03
sirru5hI am reading this over https://www.freedesktop.org/software/systemd/man/resolved.conf.html23:04
hfgdbI will roll back to 16.04 and wait for the next LTS23:04
sirru5hI really hate not winning ..23:04
sirru5hYou know for a production server stability really is the key23:05
hfgdbme too23:05
hfgdbit is stable (kubernetes == love), just slow23:06
sirru5hYeah but there shouldn't be a slow down in network speeds like you know maybe you should put a ticket in23:08
sirru5hI know personally I'd like to know what the resolution is23:08
The_countHello' does anyone know how to or know what the dpkg repair broken packages command is, in the menu in the Ubuntu recovery menu. I cannot get the network to connect unless I am at a ttya broken back I could just commanders for the recovery menu anything to23:17

Guest87780Good day23:21
The_countThat doesn't seem to show any problems like it does when I run the dpkg repair broken packages from the recovery menu23:21
sirru5hha The_count I had an issue just like that recently mine said I was holding onto broken packages23:23
sirru5his that what you get?23:23
The_countI don't think I am, the bro let is that I can't run the update through the menu because it won't connect to the network23:24
jim87hello! Is it possible to install the libreswan's network manager plugin? I've tried building it from source without success (I'm able to install it, but I don't see it in the manager)23:25
Bashing-omThe_count: In recovery mode to enable networking also select "enable networking" in the recovery menu options .23:26
sirru5hThe_count, ^^^ he got the right answer23:27
sirru5hjim87 networkmanager-strongswan?23:31
jim87sirru5h: strongswan supports only aggressive mode (vs main mode) when no group is specified (indeed you can't leave the group field empty)23:32
jim87that's why I need to configure libreswan. I can do it manually via /etc/ipsec.conf-secrets, but I'd really prefere to use a GUI instead23:33

capra_ibexPablo, this is ubuntu channel so why do you ask if we use ubuntu? Obviously. In my case for over 10 years. You need to tell what your hardware is and which ubuntu you have installed.23:41
sirru5hhmm jim87 finding it on debian repos and git...23:42

jim87sirru5 I'll try with debian debs... Tried with sources, but no luck at all23:44
crozwhen i set my resolution on my laptop to 4k the fonts are literally like 1mm. how do i fix this?23:44
jim87sirru5h: btw there's no deb either23:44
capra_ibexpablo, my guess is that you need to check your system setup. I use Kubuntu so I can't tell where exactly is in gnome. In some applications you may change font size with Ctrl-+ to increase the size. To make it smaller you use Ctrl-<minus> not literally of course.23:47
capra_ibexyou may also change the resolution of your monitor in section where monitors are setup.23:48
sirru5hhmm jim87 I didn't find it in ubuntu but debian does apparently have it;  https://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=libreswan23:49
sirru5hits unstable not sure how you'd feel about that23:49
jim87sirru5h: that's what Ubuntu have too: the libreswan's ipsec. NetworkManager plugin is a separate package23:50
jannyI am looking for somebody tooo looooove me23:50
jannywho wants to see my ass23:54
janny??23:54
jannyif woul you get a picture of a big butt so tell me someting23:55
sirru5hmmmm jim87 wow and I'm sure ipsec,conf-secrets isnt fun to edit manually23:56
jim87sirru5h: it's not that I don't want, but I want to make it easy for the others23:56
jim87(and I'm not talking about Lost ahahah)23:56
=== Guest37 is now known as hivearts
jim87I find it strange at least though that debian/ubuntu don't consider libreswan, supporting only strongswan, when they're not interoperable23:57
