valorie@Gary I don't recall seeing anything00:38
valorieplease repost00:38
valorieyes, this is for getting and giving user support00:38
IrcsomeBot1<Gary> I have a 16.04 LTS system.  It has been running without fail since before 16.04.  The only issues I truly have had have been with an NVIDA card. … I did normal updates and upon a reboot, I received a message saying that OpenGL2.0 is not able to be used.  I have OpenGL3.1 set. … KDE GUI does not show, … I have removed and purged all NVIDIA drivers and a GUI appears.  I have tried to install diferent verions of NVIDIA through the "D01:06
IrcsomeBot1settings.  None work. … I'm at a loss.01:06

valorie@Gary -- so neauvou isn't working for you?01:16
valorieif it is, what's the issue?01:17
IrcsomeBot1<Gary> I haven't tried neauvou.  I have an NVIDIA card that was working prior to updates.  I eliminated NVIDIA completely and then I have a KDE desktop.01:19
valorieyes, so now you are using neauvou01:21
valoriewhich is the open driver01:21
valoriethe Nvidia card is still working, or you would see nothing01:21
IrcsomeBot1<Gary> Yes.. without the drivers, the same card is still working01:22
Roeyhi01:45
Roeyanyone here?01:45
Roeyhey hey valorie!01:45
IrcsomeBot1<Gary> Valorie, I certainly don't write te code for NVIDA or KDE, but I'm certain, without a recent updat of an NVIDA driver, that there are other issues possibly in the KDE backport.01:47
valorie@gary, that's possible01:55
valoriethere are so many chips and other parts of people's systems01:55
valoriethat not all updates will work 100% correctly for everything01:55
valoriewe always test before releasing backports or updates01:56
valorieas does the larger Ubuntu team01:56
IrcsomeBot1<Gary> So, I should wait until future updates?  It would seem that past hardware should ALWAYS be supported.  Am I incorrect?01:56
IrcsomeBot1<Gary> I have been a Linux user as an ISP since 1995.  I'm not new01:57
valorie@Gary, I'm not seeing the problem here. Your card is supported; your desktop is loading and works01:57
valorienot everyone uses the nvidia blobs01:58
IrcsomeBot1<Gary> Thank you, Valorie.  What do you reccomend?01:59
valorieI'm asking what the actual problem is01:59
valoriehey Roey, how are ya01:59
Roeyfacing a weird problem: I was upgrading my father's new computer from 16.04 -> 17.04 with do-release-upgrade, and it upgraded... but now it doesn't recognie the keyboard or mouse.02:00
Roeyit upgraded to 16.10.02:00
valorie@gary, if you ask driver manager what you are running and it works, I don't see the problem02:00
valorieeven after restarting?02:00
IrcsomeBot1<Gary> Valorie, I'm using now a laptop that was installed with the exact same versions at the same time.02:00
valoriestrange02:00
IrcsomeBot1<Gary> This laptop has an NVIDIA card02:01
valorieyes, you said so02:01
valorieare you saying that your new laptop isn't working?02:01
IrcsomeBot1<Gary> I'm saying the laptop was loaded with Kubuntu 16.04 at the same time and has a newer NVIDA card.02:02
IrcsomeBot1<Gary> I certainly appreciate your help, Valorie.02:04
valorie@Gary, if you are interested02:04
valoriethere is a PPA with newer drivers: https://itsfoss.com/ubuntu-official-ppa-graphics/02:04
valorieI am using it on my new laptop and it's good02:05
valoriehowever I'm back to nouveau anyway02:05
IrcsomeBot1<Gary> I will try that on me server and let you know.02:05
valoriesorry for my horrible spelling of that by the say02:05
valoriefollow the driver-manager recommendation02:05
IrcsomeBot1<Gary> You are typing quickly.... I'm just a bad speller02:06
IrcsomeBot1<Gary> Valorie, this is just a KDE GUI problem on a server.  It's not an immediate or urgent issue.02:07
valorieok02:07
IrcsomeBot1<Gary> I thought it also to be a problem that had not been also reported02:08
valoriewell, I'm no expert, and am still unclear on the nature of the problem02:08
IrcsomeBot1<Gary> I can always make it work.  Patience has always taught me that Linux problems will alway be repaired in time.02:08

IrcsomeBot1<Gary> I would appreciate your questions in order for me to provide you the information to assit me.03:04
IrcsomeBot1<Gary> Uptime is not the issue here.  It is simply a change of OpenGL working with NVIDIA03:06
valoriechcknrub: I've had some months uptime, but now I'm testing a lot, so... not long03:07
valoriedays not weeks03:07
valorieIMO that's important for servers, not so much for desktop machines03:07
IrcsomeBot1<Gary> This server has been running Ubuntu/Kubuntu for about 3 years03:08
IrcsomeBot1<Gary> Uptime would only allow the time between reboots.  I reboot each time a linux firmware is installed.03:09

valorieIMO you should use backports if you want newer versions of all your software03:35
valorieinstead of just base system updates03:35
valorieI always run backports03:36
valoriebut then, I don't run LTS03:36
IrcsomeBot1<Gary> That's what I'm using03:36
valorieI know, so I think you value stability over "new"03:36
valoriewhereas I like new and shiny03:37
valorieI ran 17.04 pretty much as soon as the archive opened03:37
IrcsomeBot1<Gary> Valorie... I know stability of a server comes from the Linux operating system and it's core... not Kubuntu or else on top.03:38

valorieperhaps that's why your changes aren't "sticking04:13

valorie!permissions04:13
ubottuAn explanation of what file permissions are and how they can be manipulated can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FilePermissions04:13
valoriebasically you will "chown" your home04:13
valorieand reset any files which are owned by root, back to "you"04:14
IrcsomeBot1<Gary> But he simply asked "is there anyway to make the titlebar disappear in firefox? help please"04:16

EvilRoeyBluesKaj: heya, so I had Ubunntu 16.04.2 LTS on this Intel NUC 6i7KYK system; I upgraded to 16.10, but now when it boots, it no longer recognizes keyboard or mouse input! :(  Furthermore, I tried entering the GRUB boot menu by holding down Shift, but it did not work.   Tried the other Shift.  Same thing.  Tried both Shifts.  Same thing.13:47

EvilRoeyit's where I am now13:48
EvilRoey(obviously I am chatting to you from my workstation, which is unaffected)13:49
hateballEvilRoey: did it have an ssh server installed before the 16.10 upgrade?13:49

EvilRoeyit did not13:50
EvilRoeyhateball: ^13:50
EvilRoeybtw again, god, I love your nickname13:50
hateballHmmm13:50
hateballGonna be pretty hard then, you'll need to liveboot and possibly edit kernel options, question is what13:51
EvilRoeyok13:51
EvilRoeyso there is one place I saw something:13:51
EvilRoeyhttps://askubuntu.com/questions/842839/keyboard-and-mouse-only-work-in-recovery-mode-ubuntu-16-04-lts13:51
EvilRoeythey advised issuing "sudo aptitude purge irqbalance"13:51
hateballEvilRoey: yeah well, if you cant access grub you cant enter recovery menu13:52
EvilRoeyright13:52
EvilRoeywell I ccan force the grub menu to appear13:52
EvilRoeythat's one thing.13:52
hateballI'd personally do that, and go to a recovery console and do-release-upgrade to 17.04 since 16.10 is EOL in a bit anyhow13:53
BluesKajEvilRoey,  I think hateball has a good point, don't muck about with 16.1013:53
EvilRoeyoh13:54
EvilRoeyBluesKaj: shoudl I try installing 17.04 then?13:54
hateballEvilRoey: otherwise you can of course try those suggestions, or livebooting and chrooting... but 16.10 is still EOL soon13:54
EvilRoeyahhh I see.13:54
BluesKajEvilRoey,  yes install 17.0413:54
EvilRoeyso perhaps I shoudl have stuck with 14.whatever13:54

EvilRoeythey've installed Windows as a VirtualBox guest, and I want to keep that14:13
hateballEvilRoey: you dont need to reinstall anything14:14
hateballjust do-release-upgrade from a root console (with network)14:14
BluesKajhateball,  he can't get to a vt/tty14:14
BluesKajno mouse no KB14:15
hateballBluesKaj: right, but there's still ways to force it14:15
hateballassuming the mouse/kb works at all with that kernel that is14:15
EvilRoeyhateball: ok14:15
EvilRoeyoh yeah but i need to chroot14:15
hateballthen you can liveboot, edit the grub.cfg to boot single mode by default14:15
EvilRoeyright?14:15
hateballnope, you cant do-release-upgrade with chroot14:15
EvilRoeyhow do I boot to single-mode by default again?14:15
BluesKajthink windows VM loses..Roey a clean install is your only option if you can't drop to a shell14:15
EvilRoeyhateball: ok.  So what are the steps you propose for installing 17.04, aside from re-installing it from the CD14:16
EvilRoeyBluesKaj: ok, that's what I figured14:16
hateballEvilRoey: liveboot your system with something, then mount your partition with /boot on it14:18
hateballEvilRoey: then you manually edit /boot/grub/grub.cfg14:18
EvilRoeyok14:18
EvilRoeyhateball: let's say I can boot to the command line (no X), what then?14:19
hateballEvilRoey: then you can "sudo do-release-upgrade"14:19
hateballwhich will put you on 17.04 with new kernel etc14:19
hateballEvilRoey: anyhow, edit grub.cfg and append "single" to your bootline14:19
hateballby default you will have a line with linux that ends with "quiet splash"14:20
BluesKajif he can boot to a vt/tty14:21
hateballlike "linux   /boot/vmlinuz-4.4.0-77-generic blahblah quiet splash"14:21
EvilRoeyaye14:22
EvilRoeyok;14:22
hateballso just add single at the end there14:22
EvilRoeyby the way, I am trying to make an install USB stick... how do I get the .iso onto it?14:22
BluesKajwhat about nomodeset ?14:22
hateballEvilRoey: dd if=/path/to/iso of=/dev/sdX14:22
hateballBluesKaj: the issue isnt graphics, he has no mouse/keyboard14:23
BluesKajthat's X server14:23
hateballit dies soon as grub loads, as I understand it. which is why he cant enter it manually14:24
hateballhence the need to liveboot and edit configs14:24
hateballbut I must leave now, so good luck \o14:24
