IntelCoreyah update idk what00:20
mmansoHi All!00:23
nonix4chrm... didn't get unity (--replace) to work properly. Resorted to installing random other wm, picked openbox this time... but how do I get access to other "desktops" than "1" in that? as in "send to desktop" lists only "desktop 1" and "alL"; how to add more? been a think it has been a decade since I used those...?00:24
mmansoI've a ubuntu system which I've done a lot of tweaks and instalations to it. Now, I've a fresh ubuntu installed on another box. There's any recipe that I could do a tgz of the entire system and copy it to the fresh one so it would become exactly like the first one?00:24
mmansoFirst box is a normal GRUB one, second is a EFI BIOS one... that's why I'd like to use this way...00:25
ChaiTRexmmanso: Not really.00:25
mmansoChaiTRex: such a thing isn't possible?00:26
ChaiTRexmmanso: It's probably possible, but I don't think anybody's made a tool to do it.00:26
ChaiTRexmmanso: I mean to do it properly.00:27
mmansoChaiTRex: this system we have is deployed via an Acronis Image. The problem is that it doesn't work with both BIOS and UEFI modes...00:28
mmansoI was trying to install a brand new uubntu on a UEFI machine (ubuntu installer handles that) and that copy the entire system to it. This way, I would avoid applyed all the configurations to the new instalatiom00:29

ChaiTRexmmanso: I don't know anything about Acronis Image.00:30

ChaiTRexElectrumGuy: It may be a security error to have /etc/rc.local with those permissions.03:07

ChaiTRexElectrumGuy: You can do: @reboot script1 && script2 && script3 && script4 && script503:15

psychoticwarriorwhat version of ubuntu?\03:17
S1GM4Hello! I have a rather ODD request.03:17
e-ventCurrent LTS03:17
psychoticwarrior17.04?03:17
ChaiTRexpsychoticwarrior: Even number followed by usually 04 is LTS.03:18
e-vent16.04.2 LTS03:18
S1GM4I'm wanting to grant an "internet friend" I've known for several years SSH access to my server on a basic level so he can add files onto my webserver (taking advantage of everything that has to offer, maybe even will set him up some database access as well eventually, etc.)03:18
S1GM4is there a guide out there for "setting up a shell account for an emotionally unstable distant internet friend"?03:18
e-ventYeah03:18
psychoticwarriorwhy not install 17.04?03:18
e-ventIt's a website with the title03:18
e-ventNOPE03:18
S1GM4XD hahaha03:18
psychoticwarrior16.04 is fine03:19
e-ventI want LTS psychoticwarrior03:19
psychoticwarriorok03:19
psychoticwarriorcool bro03:19
e-ventIf one insists S1GM4 be careful with permissions03:19
S1GM4I mean, I'm fairly certain I can lock down his shell account to a good degree, but I want to take some extra precautions03:19
e-ventand use FTP03:19
ChaiTRexS1GM4: You could use port forwarding with a virtual machine.03:19
e-ventDon't give em execute03:20
e-ventjust give em FTP03:20
e-ventperfect for adding or removing files03:20
S1GM4I can't kind of "lock" his shell into some /var/www/html/ directory with no execute, etc.?03:20
S1GM4and have him sftp?03:20
e-ventyou could home him into /var/www/dudestuff03:20
e-ventno problem03:20
e-ventset perms03:20
ChaiTRexYou could probably set his shell to /bin/false03:21
e-ventbut you really don't want to grant any execute perms03:21
S1GM4Just chown it to his account? What other precautions should I take with the directory structure itself?03:21
e-ventor just only give him FTP access to that folder03:21
S1GM4yeah, I can't see him making any arguments for execute permissions03:21
e-ventin which case you can just make an FTP account03:21
ChaiTRexYou could make a web application that allows him to upload and download after entering a password.03:22
S1GM4I'm actually going to ask him what would be wrong with just an ftp access and why he wants/needs shell03:22
e-ventHe might be interested in something like rsync?03:22
e-ventpsychoticwarrior, its a network gatewayu03:22
e-venthence LTS03:22
psychoticwarriorright on03:23
S1GM4hmm ChaiTRex: That is a good diea, right up my alley haha, and would remove a lot of problems right off the bat, unless he wants to start settup up complex directory structure, etc.03:24
e-ventS1GM4, owncloud?03:24
S1GM4heh, he seems fine with just taking ftp access03:25
S1GM4so that will take a lot of stress off the situation03:25
S1GM4the guy seems nice and all, but I think he has a few mental problems03:25
psychoticwarriorwho?03:25
S1GM4(I met him on coughsyrup internets, so...)03:25
S1GM4random internet friend needing some server space/access03:25
e-ventyeah I'd be wary of CP03:25
e-ventor other illegal shit03:26
S1GM4Yeah, I'll monitor heavily what he puts on there for a while, but he doesn't strike me as *that* type03:26
psychoticwarriorwho aer you talking about03:26
S1GM4A random person I know mostly via IRC since about 2008 or so03:27
psychoticwarrioroh ok03:28
psychoticwarriorwhats his deal03:28
S1GM4I think he might do some drugs and stuff, but mostly he just makes a bunch of weird art and other stuff, semi-memes more focused on the community he is a part of (Dextroverse, which is an internet harm reduction community for people that drink too much Robitussin)03:29
S1GM4So I mean, that is kind of a red flag, but luckily points away from piracy or cp or anything which i can't afford to have on my server :x03:29
S1GM4I ran a web server wayyy back when I was 13 or so (I was born in 1987, so do the math), and I sold a lot of web space back then for really cheap, as I had a great connection and a reliable old Red Hat box.03:30
psychoticwarrioryea robotrip. been there done that. shit messes with your mind03:30
S1GM4I stopped doing it after I seen what some of my clients were uploading :( lol03:30
S1GM4not CP, but stuff almost as bad. I shut it down, refunded everybody their money and never ventured into running a web server again (except for personal use)03:30
e-ventReinstalled, same issue03:31

thomedyokay i am using the sox command...and i read the page on it... it said that if i am formatting a raw file to a compressed file i need to encode manually  but im not seeing the proper options on how to get that04:02
thomedycan someone tell me how to encode raw to ogg specificlly04:02
e-ventI know it can work since it works on liveboot just fine04:03
VerissimusI have an issue which is a noob issue ... so please dont belittle me04:05
Bashing-omVery_slow: We were all new at one time . Ask your question :)04:06
Verissimusuhm I have a noob networking issue04:06
psychoticwarriorwhats the issue04:06
Verissimusso04:06
Verissimusbear with me04:06
VerissimusI have 2 machines.. a linux box and a windows machine connected to the same router04:07
psychoticwarriorok..04:07
VerissimusI can ping the gateway(aka my router) but I cant ping windows machine(connected wirelessly) and linux box(connected with a wired connection)04:08
VerissimusWhen I ping linux box from windows, I get Destination host unreachable but packet loss is 0%04:08
Verissimusand when I ping windows machine(running win 10) from linux box, I get destination host unreachable and packet loss 100%04:09
Verissimusso I searched google(duh)04:09
VerissimusAnd I started with enabling ICMP outgoing and incoming messages on my windows firewall04:09
Verissimusthen I checked ufw on ubuntu and it was inactive04:09
Verissimusthen I fiddled with ufw trying to enable it to allow all incomg connections to my linux box but to no avail04:10
psychoticwarriorwhats your ip addresses of both machines04:11
VerissimusAlso, I can ping my phone from my windows machine .. phone is also connected wirelessly(duh) and so is the windows machines04:11
VerissimusSo, I connected both linux box and windows machine through ethernet cable and now I am able to ping both of them04:11
Verissimuspsychoticwarrior: Windows : 192.168.1.35 Ubuntu : 192.168.1.4004:11
Verissimuspsychoticwarrior: both use dhcp04:12
psychoticwarriorhmm04:12
psychoticwarriorfor your linux check out iptables04:12
Verissimuspsychoticwarrior: they are all empty(I installed the box yesterday) and all the policies are set to allow04:12
psychoticwarriorhmm\04:13
psychoticwarriorweird04:13
VerissimusMy point is why am I able to ping both machines successfully when they are both connected through wired conns and not through wireless04:13
thomedyhas anyone ever used sox04:13
thomedyim trying to encode raw to ogg04:14
VerissimusI think its an issue with my router but then why can I ping my android phone from my pc and vice-versa04:14
thomedyi read the file it didn't say correct encoding im still aat aloss04:14
e-ventStill have no joy getting this 3600 to work04:15
Verissimusanyone04:16
Verissimus?04:16
IntelCorehi P:04:17
psychoticwarriortry restarting your router04:18
IntelCore.ucf-dist  is just a bit different than 50unattended-upgrades04:18
s00xhey, is it possible to create entry for SSD in GRUB ?04:18
Verissimuspsychoticwarrior: I tried it already.. thats the first thing I did04:18
S1GM4Arg, I went against the best advice and I've accidentally made an error playing with something I should not have04:19
S1GM4setfacl -R -m user:USER:rwx /var/www/html/dir/DIR/   <--- Obviously the USER and two dir commands are replaced, I tried to prevent them from reading the contents or being able to cd other places in /var/ and it worked great!04:20
S1GM4Except not they cannot even cd into their own home directory :( lol04:20
IntelCoreI use gedit to read both versions of 50unattended-upgrades, and note that the one in ths soup uses .ucf-dist04:20
S1GM4which would be the /var/www/html/dir/DIR/ (obviously not the real name, just an example)04:20
S1GM4what can I do with setfacl to make sure they are able to cd into that directory?04:20
S1GM4(the previous command does not seem to allow it, the login states: Could not chdir to home directory /var/www/html/DIR/dir/: Permission denied  (changed the directory again, but just to give an idea of the structure)04:21
psychoticwarriorsu -04:21
psychoticwarriorenter password04:21
psychoticwarriorcd /var/www/html04:21
S1GM4Yes, my other user(s) can still access /var/www/html/ etc.04:22
S1GM4(this user does not have sudo priviledges that I am trying to create)04:23
Verissimushow to disable iptables?04:23
IntelCore'50unattended-upgrades.ucf-dist' it has an invalid filename extension04:23
S1GM4I used some commands like this: setfacl -R -m user:sam:--- /var/   AND  setfacl -m user:sam:rx /var/    and then, setfacl -R -m user:sam:rwx /var/www/html/DIR/dir/   (for example)04:24
S1GM4(trying to prevent them from using cd .. from their home directory, which is like /var/www/html/DIR/dir/  )04:24
S1GM4but instead I seem to have locked them out of their home directory with those commands :/ lol04:24
psychoticwarriorsudo service ufw stop04:25
psychoticwarriorufw stop/waiting04:25
IntelCoreyes permissions04:26
Verissimuspsychoticwarrior: ufw is disabled04:26
psychoticwarriorok04:26
Verissimuspsychoticwarrior: and I rebooted after disabling it04:26
IntelCorean ftp service is better04:26
Verissimuspsychoticwarrior: actually.. my router is stopiing communication between wired and wireless clients04:26
Verissimuspsychoticwarrior: atleast thats what I think04:27
IntelCoreoo04:27
Verissimuspsychoticwarrior: if it was a firewall issue, why would I be able to ping both machines when they were connected through cables.....04:27
S1GM4I should have known not to mess with setfacl  XD lol. I never used it really before and knew I would make an error04:27
psychoticwarriorIt could be that your firewall doesnt block icmp messagse04:28
psychoticwarriormessages04:28
psychoticwarriorcould just block certain incoming connections04:28
IntelCoreread on file permissions SIGM404:28
Verissimuspsychoticwarrior: I know.. I added rules to windows firewall to allow incoming and outgoing ICMPv4 messages04:28
psychoticwarriorok04:29
S1GM4IntelCore: The user owns the directory they are trying to access and everything worked fine before I used those setfacl commands :( lol04:29
Verissimuspsychoticwarrior: but I was able to successfully ping both machines from each other when they were connected through cables...... :(04:29
psychoticwarriorhmm04:30
IntelCoreSIGM4 - directories and files are files04:30
psychoticwarriorit could be that you can send requests but you dont recieve a reply to the sender machine04:30
IntelCoredevices are files04:30
Verissimuspsychoticwarrior: indeed.. but why is it happening when connection is between a wired and a wireless machine and not when connection is between 2 wired machines?04:31
psychoticwarriorhmm im not sure04:31
IntelCoreping the route pls04:31
psychoticwarriormaybe run wireshark04:31
psychoticwarrioryea whats the route04:31
Verissimuspsychoticwarrior: there is no route entry in the route print output in windows machine04:32

YankDownUnderjerin[m], there are several references to "background" - and to using obconf. laughingtigerhey ubuntu users can I ask a question, can you remove or purge bluetooth without causing damage to the whole system------ubuntu-desktop or something like that?06:47
YankDownUnderlaughingtiger, Yes. It can be safely disabled.06:47
laughingtigerI mean remove06:47
laughingtigernot just disable06:47
YankDownUnderfishbowlkraken, One question at a time, answers are free. Correct answers are $10 AUD.06:47
YankDownUnderlaughingtiger, Either. Your choice.06:48
truthraeon-ltd, the people that need protection the most are the ones that don't know how to lock anything down06:48
fishbowlkrakenSo, after installing Cinnamon, I've found I can't change my color theme or icon theme, though I can change window decorations, panels, and cursors. Also, I can't get the graphics drivers to work.06:48
YankDownUnderfishbowlkraken, Graphics driver is the priority. All the "eye candy" comes after, hmm...06:48
fishbowlkrakenAnd by the way, PM me your paypal, if you can help me get a GPU that's only supported on GPU drivers released after the freeze for 17.04, I will GLADLY paypal you that06:49
YankDownUnderfishbowlkraken,  :)06:49
laughingtigerso just apt-get remove and it will only remove bluetooth? I havn't use ubuntu for years. last time I remembered if I do this ubuntu-desktop and whole bunch of other things will volunterily die with it.06:49
fishbowlkrakenI'm on a machine with an nvidia Quadro M2200, which is only supported by Nvidia 378 or later. I can install that driver using an experimental PPA06:50
YankDownUnderlaughingtiger, Preferably use "synaptic" to remove/add stuff - IN A SANE FASHION.06:50
laughingtigervoluntarily06:50
laughingtigerthat was one big reason I chose not to use ubuntu anymore06:50
YankDownUnderlaughingtiger, Hence I suggest DISABLE instead of "completely remove" - but your prefs, your choice.06:50
laughingtigerdon't know if things has been changed or not so come to ask06:50
fishbowlkrakenbut when installing Steam, it installs Nouveau, which then takes priority, and then trying to remove nouveau tries to remove like, literally everything06:51
fishbowlkrakendespite it not being needed before06:51
laughingtigerall right thank you YankDownUnder06:51
fishbowlkrakenOh, also, if 378 *is* enabled, that removes my ability to adjust brightness. If I use the later one, 381, it allows brightness control for some reason.06:53
fishbowlkrakenAlso, I can only really use KDE, Unity, or Cinnamon, as dear god, does everything else hate 4k screens.06:53
IntelCorewobbles06:54
fishbowlkrakenand a non HiDPi supported DE on a 15" 4k screen gets nifty.06:54
YankDownUnderfishbowlkraken, Being that you're on 17.04 - which is NOT an LTS version, you're going to be chasing white whales...06:54
fishbowlkrakenDude, the LTS is even further behind06:54
fishbowlkrakenI need graphics drivers released in February for this thing to even RUN, so staying closer to the bleeding edge is helpful.06:55
YankDownUnderfishbowlkraken, You'd mentioned an "experimental PPA" for the drivers...have you gone that route yet?06:55
fishbowlkrakenYeah, I installed it06:55
fishbowlkrakenit then is disabled by Nouveau, when that installs because Steam won't let me run without installing that.06:56
fishbowlkrakenThen, for some reason, when you try to remove Nouveau, it tries to take literally all of GTK with it06:56
IntelCorewhy isny Xchat, or *itchX in repository to apt?06:56
YankDownUnderI'm not running 17.04 - I always stick to LTS - and, as well, I don't game - at all - so "Steam" and anything else "game" related - I bypass - so, what I honestly would suggest is waiting for a few hours - when the rest of the world wakes up...see if someone will be able to "bite at the bait" and help further...I'm like an anchor, bro...like an old anchor...not very helpful...06:57

ducassefishbowlkraken: if you don't get an answer, try again in 15-20 minutes.07:19
fishbowlkrakenI first asked the question at 1:46, didn't get a conclusive answer07:20
akikfishbowlkraken: did you say that even if you have a working install with the nvidia driver, steam force installs nouveau? that could be one option to search for because it sounds too weird07:22
fishbowlkrakensooo, I'm on a machine with an nvidia Quadro M2200, which is only supported by Nvidia 378 or later. I can install that driver using a bleeding edge PPA, but when I install Steam, it would seem it installs some drivers that supercede the proprietary ones, and I can't use it07:22
senapsIntelCore: so it's safe? i mean they can surf all the traffic and everything we do(it's a network security company and i'm the newbie). so i was thinking if all these hacker's and network security nerd's in the role of our network admin, could see what password's im entering in my ssh's. unless they have a keyloger?07:23
fishbowlkrakenyeah, when it installs Mesa, it installs Nouveau along with it.07:23
fishbowlkrakenSteam requires Mesa for some reason07:23
fishbowlkrakenIs there a way for me to get the bash history of command returns as well as commands given? Or a history of packages installed and uninstalled? I found .Bash_History, but that only lists the commands I've punched in, not the replies.07:24

fishbowlkrakenI have a weirder issue involving the fact that I can't change icon themes or colors in cinnamon, but let's save that for after I have the ability to use my GPU.07:25
IntelCoreadmin may require user/pass.. but doesn't has to.. and user can send clear text pass07:25
akikfishbowlkraken: have you tried apt pinning to never install nouveau?07:27
IntelCoresenaps - on that url -- The second diagram shows how the data in an encrypted connection like SSH is encrypted on the network and so cannot be read by anyone who doesn't have the session-negotiated keys, which is just a fancy way of saying the data is scrambled.07:27
fishbowlkrakenI tried removing Nouveau, and when I did07:27
fishbowlkrakenwell, here07:27
akikfishbowlkraken: apt pinning is something extra you need to configure. it tells your system to not update certain packages or never install certain packages07:28
fishbowlkrakenOkay, but I can't even remove Nouveau to *start* that procedure, because, grabbing a pastebin07:29
senapsducasse: yea i knew what it stands for. i was asking if it would encrypt my password when entered. because secure connection doesn't matter if it ain't secure in my own system while entering password.07:30

senapsthanks guy's. link helped alot. i got my answer07:31

fishbowlkrakenIs there seriously no other way to enable nvidia drivers?07:32
fishbowlkrakenAs in, not found in the repos?07:32

fishbowlkrakenBlah. Pastebin says it's under heavy load08:27
fishbowlkrakenany other paste sites I can use?08:27
ducasse'glxinfo | nc termbin.com 9999'08:27
fishbowlkrakenhttp://termbin.com/rz5z08:29
fishbowlkrakenThank ya08:29
ducasseso it's using the nvidia driver...08:30
gulzarfishbowlkraken: bpaste , dpaste08:31
fishbowlkrakenWeird.08:31
fishbowlkrakenAnyway, what's bpaste and/or dpaste?08:31
gulzarfishbowlkraken: https://bpaste.net/08:32
gulzartry and know08:32
fishbowlkrakenAh ok08:32
fishbowlkrakenwell I have this termbin thing now, so that's all good08:32
fishbowlkrakenAnyway, it's running like Nouveau, which is most certainly not a compliment, lol08:32
gulzarfishbowlkraken: yes, there are many term based ones08:33
fishbowlkrakenyeah, only needed one, I'm good now, still looking to fix this whole "my CAD machine can hardly run glgears" thing08:33
gulzarfishbowlkraken: I never had any luck with nvidia :(08:34
fishbowlkrakenI've had good luck with Nvidia on Linux for about ten years08:34
fishbowlkrakensorry, eight08:34
fishbowlkrakenbut my issue currently is kind of the punishment for running on the bleeding edge08:34
fishbowlkrakenmy laptop was released at the start of this month, and the GPU was only released in January08:35
fishbowlkrakenas such, the first graphics driver to support it only came out in February08:36
fishbowlkrakenand so it's got some growing pains, it'd seem08:37
ducassemaybe try keeping on eye on that thread i pasted a link to, it was only posted 24h ago08:39
fishbowlkrakenI would, except after looking at the other dev forum posts on Nvidia where Linux is concerned08:39
fishbowlkrakenthey tend to reply with "Use windows lul" and close it08:39
gulzararchlinux plays with bleeding edge, or fedora, or suse tubleweed08:40
fishbowlkrakenYeah, I'm not looking to run Arch on my CAD machine.08:40
fishbowlkrakenI just want graphics acceleration so I can get back to making models.08:40
fishbowlkrakenI distro hopped plenty in college, but I'm fine with just using Ubuntu, so long as I can, you know, use my computer.08:41
IntelCorecad.. design is large and some are slow.08:41
fishbowlkrakenYes, that is why I have a laptop with 64GB of RAM.08:42
IntelCoresome cad acts like rendering08:42
fishbowlkrakenRight, which is why I bought a laptop with 64GB of RAM.08:42
ducassemy best suggestion right now is to try again either later today or preferably tomorrow. weekends are really quiet here, especially sundays.08:42
fishbowlkrakenAaaagh08:43
fishbowlkrakenSorry, just, like, I'm currently using a Chromebook to do most of my model making08:43
fishbowlkrakenluckily I use OnShape, which is WebGL based08:43
fishbowlkrakenbut it's not exactly a speed demon08:43
fishbowlkrakenand it's outperforming the P51 thinkpad08:44
fishbowlkrakenkiiinda frustrating08:44
freakyyhi all. is there any good new site for ubuntu other than omgubuntu.co.uk? :)08:48
fishbowlkrakenmaybe /r/ubuntu?08:48
IntelCorefreakyy - do you read mail?08:48
gulzarfishbowlkraken: there is webup 808:49
fishbowlkrakenwebupd8 you mean?08:49
fishbowlkrakenOh yeah, those guys pop up on my suggested stories from time to time08:50
ducassefreakyy: try asking in #ubuntu-discuss or #ubuntu-offtopic08:50
freakyyhm ok thanks08:50
fishbowlkrakenIs there a drivers specific # for Linux users?08:50
fishbowlkrakenActually, nevermind08:51
fishbowlkrakenevery time I've gone on tech support chats for general Linux users and say I use Ubuntu, it just becomes a chorus of "UBUNTU IS A SWAHILI WORD FOR CAN'T CONFIGURE DEBIAN HAHAAHAHAHAHAHA"08:52
fishbowlkrakenfollowed by "Install Gentoo" until I leave08:52
IntelCorei was doing a security install of selinus08:53
daxfishbowlkraken: it's 2017, I think they mostly switched from Gentoo to Arch now08:53
fishbowlkrakenThe people who spam install Gentoo typically aren't running Gentoo08:54
squigis it ok, to talk about systemd files here? I am trying to create a service on my system08:54
squigbut I dont know where the file should go on my system08:54
fishbowlkrakenthey're running Windows 10 and just feel like being turds08:54
squigI thought it should be /etc/systemd/system08:54
ducassesquig: i assume you're running ubuntu?08:55
squigyes08:55
fishbowlkrakenThen yup, totally relevant for here08:55
ducassesquig: then yes, you can ask here :) just a normal service unit?08:55
squigyes, I want to start a deamon process08:56
ducasseand the problem is?08:56
squigits an external package that does not come with one08:56
jushurfishbowlkraken: i have gentoo/funtoo/ubuntu/fedora/kali/alpine linux installs on my systems. and i manage quite a few laptop installs for other ppl. what you use is not important. knowing your system is.08:56
fishbowlkrakenOkay?08:56
squigI created a mything.service file and droped in in /etc/systemd/system, but I cant seem to see it with systemctl08:56
fishbowlkrakenI was just saying I've noticed people in general Linux chats tend to be snobbish to Ubuntu users08:56
fishbowlkrakenor at least one or two people are to the point that I don't want to hang around08:57
ducassesquig: 'systemctl enable mything.service' doesn't work?08:57
gulzarsquig: /etc/systemd/system/  . start it with   systemctl start <service>08:58
gulzaras root08:58
jushurfishbowlkraken: what im trying to point out, is the fact you seem to not. at all. as you been uninstalling packets/driver instead of disabling them. this is why said what i said. so you need to adjust that.08:58
squigha that works, I thought systemctl -l would show it before I did either of those things08:59
ducasseno, you need to enable it first.08:59
fishbowlkrakenYeah, I don't know this system, as I got it on Thursday.08:59
squigso readying through the docs, I see what at other times you should try to edit systemd files you should put overrides in08:59
fishbowlkrakenSorry, I'm not a master of all things this laptop, or on graphics cards that didn't exist until January.08:59
fishbowlkrakenSorry, but the way you said that came off as just SUPER douchey.09:00
jushurfishbowlkraken: i know, tho its not ment to be. i say what i think just.09:00
fishbowlkrakenI seem to not understand my system at all because I've been using it for a grand total of six hours.09:01
fishbowlkrakenI've been using Linux as my primary OS since 2008, but using this brand now graphics card has been throwing me for a loop, as it's been a long, long time since I've had to mess with anything bleeding edge on graphics drivers09:02
fishbowlkrakenthe last workstation laptop I bought (not including a Compute Stick for my living room and a Chromebook I picked up last year) was in 201309:02
squigso whats up fishbowlkraken09:03
fishbowlkrakenI've had open drivers supercede proprietary ones before, it was actually a pretty common issue when installing proprietary drivers manually for a while09:03
fishbowlkrakenI've got the GPU on my laptop stuck in low power mode, it turns out09:03
fishbowlkrakenI thought it was trying to run nouveau instead of proprietary drivers, as the performance is consistent with that09:04
squigwhat card is it?09:04
fishbowlkrakenQuadro M2200 Mobile09:04
fishbowlkrakenFirst supported in Nvidia graphics 378, and only properly by 38109:04
fishbowlkrakenbecause on 378 I lose the ability to adjust brightness for some reason09:05
ducassehave you tried a later kernel?09:05
fishbowlkrakenIf I set it to allow backports, will that add a later kernel for me to choose from?09:06
ducasseno.09:07
ducasse!mainline09:07
ubottuThe kernel team supply continuous mainline kernel builds which can be useful for tracking down issues or testing recent changes in the Linux kernel. More information is available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds09:07
squigwhat version did you install, laptops are harder than workstations as you know09:07
fishbowlkrakenSorry, meant proposed09:07
ducassenote that those are not intended for regular use.09:07
fishbowlkrakenMy previous workstation was also a laptop, the W530.09:08
jushurfishbowlkraken: im not sure if this will work for you. https://realnc.blogspot.se/2016/01/guide-forcing-low-power-mode-with.html09:08
jushurfishbowlkraken: tho i think it can be good as a baseline for what can be done.09:09
fishbowlkrakenNo, I don't want it to keep forcing low power mode, I want it to stop.09:09
fishbowlkrakenIt won't come OUT of low power mode09:09
squigyou get the nvidia control panel?09:09
jushurfishbowlkraken: how about you actually read the full artickle before you trow it under the buss?09:09
fishbowlkrakenYup, I can set it to use adaptive or prefer maximum performance09:10
fishbowlkrakenI'm saying that setting speeds manually doesn't work.09:10
jushurit should be set to preffer max perf. and the intel igp should be turned of in bios09:10
squigprefer maximum doesnt work?09:10
squighow are you testing? cuda or gl?09:10
fishbowlkrakenhttp://i.imgur.com/BtSKmtf.png09:12
fishbowlkrakenGL09:12
fishbowlkrakenand IGP is shut off in BIOS09:12
fishbowlkrakenI'm not using the card for processing, so testing it in CUDA isn't something I'm looking to do09:12
fishbowlkrakenI use this for CAD09:13
fishbowlkrakenOkay, gonna upgrade this to 4.10.0-2209:14
fishbowlkrakengonna see if this lets me adjust the clock speeds.09:14
squignvidia-settings -a [gpu:0]/GPUPowerMizerMode=2 ?09:14
squigI dont think it will change to maximum performance until its needed09:15
fishbowlkrakenI'll test it again, sec09:15
squigmaybe open that with gears running09:15
zachflemany usbmount gurus around here?09:15
jushurfishbowlkraken: i bet its because there is no config file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ on ubuntu. as it does not have that dir by default09:16
squigzachflem, I just spend days turning it off :D09:16
fishbowlkrakenWhy, exactly, does lacking a xorg.conf.d mean Nvidia can't address its clockspeed?09:16
zachflemsquig: im trying to get usb drives to automount, did you find another way? or did you ditch it for another reason?09:17
fishbowlkrakenAnd why is this a problem ONLY with this GPU?09:17
jushurand the software dont account for that. bad coding from nvidia. basicly means it wont trigger as it should09:17
squigzachflem, needed to ban them for "security reasons"09:17
jushurfishbowlkraken: it happens, that there is bugs in software.09:17
squigfishbowlkraken, aah that attribute changes the perferred mode options09:18
fishbowlkrakenhttp://i.imgur.com/ar9rbsZ.jpg09:18
zachflemsquig: rodger.09:18
fishbowlkrakenHere's it with a game open, running at about 3FPS09:18
fishbowlkrakenstill at minimum.09:18
fishbowlkrakenAnyway, updated kernel, rebooting.09:18
fishbowlkrakenLet's see if this works.09:18
squigzachflem, are you trying to mount or unmount?09:18
fishbowlkrakenNope.09:20
fishbowlkraken but it turned off my wallpaper, so that's neat09:20
squigfishbowlkraken, so reading more with the 1, 2 settings greyed out09:20
squigthey are unavailable09:21
ducassefishbowlkraken: was that a kernel from proposed?09:21
fishbowlkrakenThat's not what the greying out in that panel means.09:21
fishbowlkrakenYeah09:21
fishbowlkrakenNvidia's config highlights whatever the current clockspeed is09:21
fishbowlkrakenand then greys out the other ones.09:21
fishbowlkrakenI've got two other machines running Nvidia cards right now09:22
squigi have all 4 non greyed out09:22
ducassethe proposed repo is primarily intended for automated testing, not at all intended for regular use.09:22
fishbowlkrakenYes, I'm aware, trying to see if changing the kernel helped.09:22
fishbowlkrakenDidn't.09:22
squighttps://snag.gy/h1v8Fd.jpg09:22
ducassewhen i asked if you had tried a newer kernel, i meant something like a mainline one.09:23
fishbowlkrakenAh, okay. It's looked the other way on my systems, before09:23
fishbowlkrakenBut okay, if it's greyed out, do you have some revelation on what it means? Or is it just mysterious?09:24
fishbowlkrakenBecause this thing isn't even going to the top of the range it says it's capable of.09:24
squigwhat cad program are you running?09:25
fishbowlkrakenAnd yes, Ducasse, I changed from the normal kernel to a proposed one, just to see if maybe that would change anything. It did not, except for some reason my wallpaper's gone now.09:25
fishbowlkrakenI use OnShape.09:25
fishbowlkrakenI don't have a super high poly model to just test this with, so I've just been starting a fairly graphically heavy game to test the GPU09:25
jushurfishbowlkraken: the nvidia settings tool needs a config file to write to. where does it do that on your system (default is /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ directory wich dont exisist in ubuntu)09:25
fishbowlkrakenJushur: So is this a documented problem for LITERALLY ALL Ubuntu users with Nvidia cards?09:26
fishbowlkrakenI feel like this'd be fixed quickly if so.09:26
fishbowlkrakenSince this specific problem is documented ONLY to be happening on the M2200 currently, I'm thinking that may not be the solution.09:26
squiginternet says just write out this file and then you have a place, /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.con09:27
jushurfishbowlkraken: no, just for ppl who have hardware/driver that dont do what they should. and nvidia has a config that expects the standard dir to be there09:27
squigmissed a letter /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf   -< missed a letter09:27
ducassejushur: it would be saved in /etc/X11, /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d is intended for config snippets09:27
jushurducasse: exactly09:27
fishbowlkrakenActually, according to "internet:" https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/1010612/sluggish-performance-no-reclocking-ubuntu-17-04-kernel-4-12rc2-nvidia-quadro-m2200-driver-381-22-/09:28
fishbowlkrakenthis is a documented problem.09:28
jushurits a major error in ubuntu actually. you dont remove a directory that is standard..09:28
squigfile a bug report :D09:28
fishbowlkrakenI just cited a bug report.09:28
squignot with ubuntu :D09:29
fishbowlkrakenAh, yeah, Ubuntu has the source code to Nvidia's drivers, forgot.09:29
fishbowlkrakenI figure if you're having an issue with Nvidia's drivers, the ones they don't release the source code to, you'd tell Nvidia.09:30
fishbowlkrakenAlso, the drivers that run this card aren't even in the repos09:30
fishbowlkrakenI'm running from an extra PPA to get support for it09:30
fishbowlkrakenSo not much filing an Ubuntu bug report would do09:31
fishbowlkrakenother than them saying "welp not our problem"09:31
jushurjust create the dir /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/09:31
fishbowlkrakenAlright.09:31
fishbowlkrakenSo now I reboot?09:32
jushurfishbowlkraken: no09:32
fishbowlkrakenOkay, I created the directory, so it's apparently saving to it09:32
jushurfishbowlkraken: do you have a .conf file in /etc/X11 directory somewhere?09:32
jushurdid nvidia settings save a file in there?09:34
fishbowlkrakenNo, it saves it in modprobe.d09:34
fishbowlkrakenOr at least that's the settings file I know of.09:34
jushurfishbowlkraken: the block for nouveau yes09:35
fishbowlkrakenThere's no xorg.conf, there is xorg.conf.d, like you told me to create09:35
fishbowlkrakenUbuntu hasn't used a xorg.conf in years though09:36
jushuru have ~/.nvidia-settings-rc09:38
jushurright?09:39
zachflemsquig: sorry for the delay, trying to auto mount usb drives, ideally unmount, but not as important09:39
fishbowlkrakenhttps://pastebin.com/uw8eEqg609:40
fishbowlkrakenHere's its contents.09:42
ducassezachflem: you want to auto-unmount usb drives? as in, before you remove them?09:42
zachflemducasse, i just read that again, and something tells me its not going to work =P09:43
ducassezachflem: exactly :)09:43
zachflemducasse, if i could mount and share automatically though, that'd be super handy09:44
ducassezachflem: what's your setup? normally the de has these things built-in.09:44
squigzachflem, and share?09:44
squigyes, I just had to go and pull out all the auto, which is why I know a little about this.09:45
zachflemsquig: the sharing is a stop gap to accessing the media files on the drives until I can get the dlna server working. the wife MUST WATCH HER SHOWS!09:45
squigzachflem, so exactly what are you trying to achieve? it might be easier if we knew that. You want to plug a usb disk and have it automatically appear?09:47
fishbowlkrakenYikes. Getting entertainment up and running for the misses is more important than my lil drivers issue, lol, so I'mma head to bed. Hope you guys can sort that out!09:47
zachflemsquig: yeah, but I'm running headless09:47
ducassefishbowlkraken: with that attitude, you might as well.09:48
zachflemand the server image doesnt include the automounting of usb drives stuff09:48
zachflemif i could get it to automount to /media/<driveLabel> i'd consider that a win09:48
jushurfishbowlkraken: you need a .conf file. with "Device" section and following option. Option "RegistryDwords" "PowerMizerEnable=0x0;"09:49
jushurfishbowlkraken: https://sswam.wordpress.com/2017/01/07/linux-low-power-low-heat-for-summer/09:50
squigzachflem, is that the server that will have the dlna system? that might be easier to set up :D09:50
ducassezachflem: look at udisks209:50
jushurzachflem: udiskctl09:50
ducassezachflem: but something like minidlna takes minutes to get running09:50
zachflemsquig: yeah it is (an old laptop)09:50
ren0v0Hi, I'm wanting to use MinOZW, but i can't find what package its in  http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/zesty/en/man1/MinOZW.1.html09:51
ren0v0I'm running 16.0409:51
squigzachflem, install plex, be happy.09:51
zachflemducasse: i've been having trouble getting minidlna to scan the drives09:51
ducasseren0v0: openzwave09:51
zachflemfigure it something to do with the way the drives mount09:52
ren0v0ducasse, sudo aptitude search zwave  > i   python-openzwave                                                                  - openzwave09:52
ducasseren0v0: that package does not exist in xenial, the man page above is from zesty09:53
ren0v0so no minozw for 16.0409:54
ren0v0meh09:54
ducasseren0v0: upgrade or look for a ppa09:55
tminHello10:02
tminI have kde neon (ununtu based) installed on my system. Most of the times when I connect my earphones the system works fine but when it wakes up from sleep with the jack plugged in, sound doesn't come out10:04
tminafter sometime the system cuts power10:04
ducassetmin: we don't support neon, try #kdeneon10:05
tminducasse: kdeneon is ubuntu based10:06
ducasse!based on ubuntu | tmin10:06

tminohh thanks.10:07
zachflemgents, udisks2 mounts the drive beautifully, i've just been through the man page and was wondering if there is a way to change where the drives get mounted.10:22
zachflemand I dont see anywhere where the drives are automounted... am I just missing something here or is that not what this does?10:23
ducassezachflem: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Udisks#Mount_to_.2Fmedia_.28udisks2.29 maybe?10:25
zachflemducasse: thanks, just trying to work out the rule goes!10:28
ducassezachflem: first line in the blue box10:30
zachflemscratch that, missed the header of the code block.... ID 10 T error10:30
zachflemducasse, cheers just saw that!10:30
zachflemif the file doesn't exist, thats just because the rule hasn't been created, or is the location arch specific?10:33
ducassejust create the file with that path10:35

jerin[m]YankDownUnder: so I figured nautilus is daemonizing somehow and showing me what's on the Desktop folder. While using openbox. Any idea how I can fix this11:17
zachflemany of you guys using udisks2, what are you using to automount? i've tried udiskie (from the Arch page linked earlier) and it was a 400mb dud11:19
ppfi'm using dbus/nautilus for user mounting11:23
zachflemnautilus as in the gui file manager? im running headless with no user logged in, so that's not going to work.11:30

dev-ex-machinaI can't get anything other than windows 10 to install to my drive, and I'm 100% sure it's related to this low end acer and it's poorly programmed barren featureless UEFI17:04
sparky8251install or boot?17:05
oerheksdev-ex-machina, let me guess, 32 bit windows + uefi on a 64 bit machine?17:05
dev-ex-machinanope, 64 bit17:05
dev-ex-machinaJust a really crummy UEFI, combined with ubuntu not co-operating17:05
dev-ex-machinathe only way i've gotten linux to boot before, is using windows cmd prompt to reconfigure the UEFI partition to load grub17:06
sparky8251dev-ex-machina i had a similar problem with my HP laptop. the UEFI boot order was hard coded so i had to rename grubs EFI entry in the partition to the same as whatever the windows one was17:07
dev-ex-machinathis is an acer17:07
dev-ex-machinaI should have known not to buy an acer but I was on a tight budget17:07
ioriadev-ex-machina, are you using the mini.iso  ?17:08
dev-ex-machinait's a $900 acer, with same specs as $1400 asus17:08
dev-ex-machinaioria, yes, but i've also tried normal installs17:08
dev-ex-machinaI'm using minimal now so I can use expert mode17:08
dev-ex-machinatry and fix it manually17:08
ioriadev-ex-machina, for mini.iso, i can say it does not support uefi17:08
ioriadev-ex-machina, https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD#mini_system_in_UEFI_mode17:09
dev-ex-machinait does have an EFI folder with a grub uefi image.. you just have to relocate the EFI folder to the root of the usb17:09
dev-ex-machinaI don't know why the included it but put it in the wrong place....17:10
ioria^17:10
ducasseptx0: a release upgrade upgrades *everything*, far from just the kernel. every new package and their dependencies, it's a long list.17:10
dev-ex-machinaI think I'm going to have to install windows to use the cmd prompt then resize my partition after removing it17:11
dev-ex-machinaIt's kinda crummy that I have to do that17:11
ioriadev-ex-machina, have you seen the link i posted ? gives you an alternative17:11
dev-ex-machinalooking now... I thought it was something I already saw but actually it's not17:12
dev-ex-machinathe problem is I don't have a package manager to work with in this expert mode installers shell17:13
donofriowhat is the process that will enable native nvidia drivers (getting old pages being flipped in front of me randomly every 5 min so I'm thinking builtin driver are not doing the best or something GLX Renderer: Gallium 0.4 on ATI RV530 GLX Version: 2.1 Mesa 12.0.6 Direct Rendering: Yes17:15
dev-ex-machinaI'm thinking of trying an newer firmware, but I always get panic attacks and anxiety when I'm flashing things that don't have brick recovery methods17:16
dev-ex-machinaI've never actually bricked anything and I've done it hundreds of times to mine and other peoples computers, but I still worry because there is now way I can drop the money to get another laptop with the same specs, I'd have to get a really cheap one then I can't do my work because it involves compiling massive projects using bloated toolchains and I need 6 hours and 12+ gb of ram for the main project I'm on17:19
dev-ex-machinaI need a staticaly linked apt for x86_6417:21
dev-ex-machinato fix this problem using my current mini iso in expert mode17:21
dev-ex-machinascrew it... I'm gonna switch to legacy bios mode,., UEFI doesn't offer enough benefits to be worth this trouble17:21
Jack_Sparrow__agreed17:21
dev-ex-machinaI've tried 4 versions of ubuntu and lubuntu, and the minimal iso in every possible way I can17:22
dev-ex-machinaNext time I buy a new computer I'm checking that the UEFI firmware is good, and full of config features and options... Mine has like, nothing except UEFI or Legacy mode, plus boot device order, plus.... save and reboot17:23
dev-ex-machinaIt's the worst bios/firmware i've ever used in terms of features, and it obviously isn't properly compliant with UEFI standards17:24
dev-ex-machinaI should have borrowed $500 and bought the asus with the same specs17:24
dev-ex-machinaasus is godly comapred to acer17:25
dev-ex-machinanot that asus is that special, it's just that acer is horrible, and I knew it, but I bought what i could afford. The cheapest computer with dual-gpu for CUDA dev, and an i5 broadwell, The HDD started failing really fast, and died like 2 weeks after my warranty expired17:26
dev-ex-machinanow I got an SSD and it's nice, but I wanted to spend that money on ram17:26
dev-ex-machinaI have a usb with nightly lubuntu, and another with xenial LTS, and somewhere I have one with windows 10 incase I need to use the windows cmd prompt trick to do this... It's pretty sad if they only way a computer can boot anyting other than windows is if you have both OS and use windows to enable the other boot option17:28
compdocUEFI or Legacy mode, plus boot device is all any of them have17:28
dev-ex-machinacompdoc, no... I used to have money and get good hardware and it had lots of options every time, voltage and frequency controls, lots of different hardware interfaces you could switch between for different devices, built like higher end dekstop stuff, but that stuff costs 3-4x as much as I spent17:30
ducassedev-ex-machina: you can't use efibootmgr from a live image?17:30
compdocthats nothing to do with uefi17:30
dev-ex-machinaducasse, i can't get grub to be recognized, no matter how I install it17:31
dev-ex-machinaI tried from a live usb already17:31
dev-ex-machina2 different ones17:31
dev-ex-machinaI been trying to do this for like 6 hours now, it shouldn't take 6 hours to install ubuntu17:31
ducassedev-ex-machina: then what is it you do from windows that fixes things?17:32
dev-ex-machinaLike, I'm not stupid, i'm good with computers, this hardware is just not compliant with the standards17:32
dev-ex-machinathere's a command, I think it's called bcedit or something... I just copy/pasted it from a google search result and poof grub was there when I rebooted instead of not even giving me the option when I hit the key to give me a boot menu to choose from17:33
ducasseyes, the linux equivalent of that is efibootmgr.17:33
dev-ex-machinaducasse, I tried it17:33
dev-ex-machinaI am using linux 20 years, I only had windows 10 resized down to a 20gb parition so I could install a compiler and do some windows dev experimenting because I haven't used windows in 20 years till I got this laptop17:34
Jack_Sparrow__whats your partition layout now17:35
mordofi'm dual booting windows 10 and ubuntu. everything has been fine for a while. windows did an update, forced a restart - and now grub is broken. it just drops me to grub rescue. windows install media won't run, and i'm lost as to how to fix my grub in a linux live boot17:36
mordofi've tried a grub-repair thing, which didn't help at all17:36
Jack_Sparrow__Need to figure out what that Windows update did to your system17:37
mordofi need to be able to boot to it before it can resume the update. at the moment all of the windows stuff is locked17:38
mordofnot sure17:38
mordofi don't know how to work with grub all that well is the main issue.. otherwise i'd probably have this resolved already17:38
Jack_Sparrow__mordof, No .. you would most likely not fix it with just grub17:40
mordofJack_Sparrow__: what's your suspicion?17:40
mordofi just looked at gparted... looks like potentially the file system for my ubuntu install has been damaged17:41
BluesKajmordof,  think you can install grub to the uefi boot partition iirc, with the live media17:41
dev-ex-machinaI'm going to replace this UEFI... I'm going to hack together a bettter one using a system with the same hardware(the asus laptop i wanted was exact same hardware execpt for better HDD, better screen, more RAM, and the RAM was faster17:41
dev-ex-machinaAt this point I just want to buy another laptop, but a custom firmware would be good for my portfolio17:41
mordofJack_Sparrow__: the partition it was on before is now listed as unallocated... :/17:42
BluesKajwindows won't reecognize ext417:43
mordofit wasn't the windows update that directly caused this... my grub boots by default into ubuntu. when i came back to my computer, it was in ubuntu, but then i told it to restart17:43
BluesKajrecognize17:43
mordofand that's when i got the behavior of grub dropping into  grub-rescue without being able to find the partition17:43
dev-ex-machinaI really want a firmware that lets me overclock and underclock and adjsut everything, I can reverse engineer and know x86 asm and hardware programmiung better than anyone I've ever met... So if there is anyone who can  make a perfect firmware without having the source but having a variety of similar firmwares, it's me17:44
dev-ex-machinanot that I'm saying I can... but if anyone can, I can17:44
dev-ex-machinaI've never done a bios/UEFI before17:45
ioriamordof, i'd say the best way is boot again the Livecd, paste sudo parted -l, mount your root and boot partitions and reinstall grub ?17:45
mordofioria: the ubuntu partition is marked as unallocated, how would i do that?17:45
BluesKajdev-ex-machina,  this not  your personal blog , enough with the stream of what 'yer gonna do"17:46
dev-ex-machinaok sorry, i'm just raging right now17:46

ioriamordof, can you paste sudo parted -l  and  sudo blkid ?17:47
mordofuhh.. hold on, let me hop on irc on that computer17:48

mordofthe swap file is normal - that's what i made it as17:53
ioriamordof, a windows update usually does not remove partitions ...17:54
mordofagreed17:54
mordofi know that's what started the process, but i'm not sure if that's the exact cause17:55
ioriamordof,  maybe testdisk can help you17:57
* mordof gives it a try17:58
Jack_Sparrow__or hirens17:58
mordofi've only ever used hirens to blow out passwords on old windows machines when people asked me to do repairs18:00
mordofdidn't know it could do much else, lo18:00
mordofioria: https://pastebin.com/QzKXnBsy      this is what i'm prompted with in testdisk after an analyze happens. i'm supposed to change the partition types to something that makes sense.. i'm not sure what makes sense here18:07

dev-ex-machinalike, I could no longer use apt, because the package was there, but broken, and had missing dependencies I had to compile myself and then the package manager didn't know they were there so it still flipped out and wouldn't let me fix the problems I caused18:19

mordoflooks that way, yeah. i marked it as * for the boot partition18:19

mordofso i tried to set the linux /dev/sda4 to P for primary partition. booted back into live usb - gparted showed a single ext4, but didn't register it as /.   tried it as a logical volume, rebooted, still not registered as / , but this time /dev/sda4 is extended with /dev/sda5 as the ext4... which i don't think that's how it was before18:25

cj101ikonia, apache serves everything over port 80 to the browser, the fonts are being served by apache to the browser when the browser reads the font awesome css and askes the server for them, apache handles the request. But it is not an apache issue as 2.4.10 running on debian is fine where as 2.4.7 and 2.4.18 on ubuntu are not. Thus sugesting it is an issue with ubuntu, hence why I am here and19:27

MonkeyDustand Quadro M2200 is...?21:26
fishbowlkrakenIt's a graphics card?21:26
IntelCoreBeethoven - http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/698321:26
fishbowlkrakenQuadro is Nvidia's scientific line of cards21:26
fishbowlkrakenAnyway, the card was only introduced in January, and the laptop it's running on only came out in the last month, so the drivers for it are pretty new21:27
IntelCoreBeethoven - windows does health checks maint times. now, smart is in the drive as data and always there - you read with gsmart21:27
fishbowlkrakenI'm only able to load them on Ubuntu from external PPAs, since 375, the most recent Nvidia drivers in the repos, don't support this card. 378 was when support was introduced, and it wasn't until 381 that the card was fully supported. In 378 you can't even change brightness21:28

fishbowlkrakenFor the past three nights I've done a bunch of random hacks to try and fix this that haven't worked, so after having a bunch of kludgy things I reinstalled fresh again, so this is all more or less stock Ubuntu, just running Cinnamon, as, dear god, nothing else supports HiDPI worth a crap.21:39

fishbowlkrakenokay, that's idiotic22:30
fishbowlkrakenit changed the clock once22:30
fishbowlkrakenOh good, it's running at the top speed right now22:31
fishbowlkrakenbut as soon as I launch a game it shuts off again for some reason.22:31
fishbowlkrakenI really, *really* hate Nvidia Prime.22:31
fishbowlkrakenIt never friggin works right.22:31
Bashing-omfishbowlkraken: Not make much sense ... try a different game and same results ?22:33
fishbowlkrakenYeah, every time I launch something ACTUALLY graphically intensive it shuts down back to nothing22:34
fishbowlkrakenalso for some reason there's a trail behind my mouse cursor now where there wasn't before22:35
Bashing-omfishbowlkraken: Sorry. I am out of ideas here . Will take one with greater skills than I .22:35
fishbowlkrakenGahhhhh22:36
fishbowlkrakenI really just want to kill Prime off, it gives me the option, I don't see why it shouldn't let me.22:36
fishbowlkrakenYou know what, I'm going to try a dumbass idea. I'll come back in a while.22:36
fishbowlkrakenI'm gonna delete Nvidia-settings. The one time I got games running correctly I didn't have it installed. I'm wondering if maybe Nvidia-settings is somehow forcing a setting, and without it the card just runs at max power22:37
Bashing-omfishbowlkraken: wanna try prime ? https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PRIME .22:40
fishbowlkrakenYou know how the thing I said sounded like a dumb, last-ditch idea?22:46
fishbowlkrakenTurns out it absolutely was.22:46
fishbowlkrakenNo dice.22:46
fishbowlkrakenIs there a channel for like, JUST driver troubleshooting on Linux in general?22:47
fishbowlkrakenI get the feeling I'm going to have to beseech some greybeards if I want this to work22:47
Bashing-omfishbowlkraken: 17:40 < Bashing-om> fishbowlkraken: wanna try prime ? https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PRIME .22:48
fishbowlkrakenI tried using it, didn't really fare any better22:49

fishbowlkrakenthat's pretty neat22:53
fishbowlkrakenBut sometimes you need the crazy insights that only people that like to hang out on IRC channels can provide.22:53
blkadderThat may be the pot talking.22:53
Jack_Sparrow__Regardless, it is another legitimate site22:54
fishbowlkrakenMaybe, but it wouldn't be the first time a pothead fixed my computer as if by magic22:55
IntelCoreyou guys/gals , gnome22:55
fishbowlkrakenI had a friend in college who drank whatever he could get his hands on and smoked whatever was lying around, whenever I'd reach the end of the line on a bug with my system, I'd hand it to him, and just say "fix it"22:55
fishbowlkrakenhe'd say "fix what?" I'd reply "just, IT." He'd disappear with my computer for like, four hours, hand it back to me with a dozen issues fixed with random scripts and hacks that made the machine run like it was new22:56

Acou_Basscan anyone help me diagnose a hard system lock-up? using ubuntu GNOME 17.04, my computer basically lasts about 5 minutes before it completely locks up (usually when i resize a window or open activities), journalctl -b -1 doesnt seem to display anything after a command i run in a terminal (i just run any old command so itll show up in the journal, then fiddle around with the desktop until it crashes to diagnose it) so the crash isnt23:26
Acou_Bassshowing in journal23:27

Acou_Bassright now im trying a fresh install from freshly-downloaded ISO, it was a new install anyway so nothing of importance was lost XD23:32
Jack_Sparrow__Acou_Bass, Use any ppa's or outside sources for your apps23:33

Acou_Basssuppose so, its a GPD win... and heres the weird thing, when i had ubuntu installed on the internal HDD it worked fine, but now ive moved the install to an SD card im getting these issues23:34
Acou_Bassso uhh, im guessing thats related :P23:34
Bashing-omAcou_Bass: SSD, in bios is AHCI enabled ?23:35
Acou_Bassgood question, ive not checked to be honest23:36
Bashing-omAcou_Bass: Sometimes the setting is verrrryyy obscure . I like to have never figured mine out .23:37
Acou_Basshehe23:37
Acou_Bassthis device has a fairly comprehensive bios, im sure i can dig it out - any idea what sort of headers its usually under?23:37
Bashing-omAcou_Bass: Nope. I am only familiar with Phonix and award bios' .23:39
Acou_Bassfair enough, ill have a dig through in a few mins im just going through the fresh install now (cant hurt right?)23:39
Bashing-omAcou_Bass:  Uh Huh, can not hurt .. I musta re-installed 10 times in my attempts to get the SSD functional on old old hardware :) - was not the install at fault !23:42
Acou_Basshehe23:42
Acou_Bassits not an SSD its a microSD, in the SD card slot of the device, which i  100% agree is sub-optimal to say the least23:43
