ajasonHi, i downloaded a openvpn config file from vpngate.net00:58
ajasonHi, i downloaded a openvpn config file from vpngate.net and added route-nopull to it, but after that use `curl --interface tun0 ifconfig.co`, i didn't get any results. my vps info is here: http://paste.ubuntu.com/24720807/01:00
ajasonwhat i want to do is route traffic of a specific process to vpn, but the problem now is it seemed i can't get connect to it. I have tested this approach on Debian 8 and `curl --interface tun0 ifconfig.co` returns the result.01:03
ajasonAny tips? Thanks.01:03
sunrunner20bash -c "$(curl -L https://raw.githubusercontent.com/DataDog/dd-agent/master/packaging/datadog-agent/source/install_agent.sh)" does _NOT_ pipe the input to bash, right? if it fails to fetch the file the whole line fails?01:23

SemiNushow can I switch to the newer version, please?02:17

SemiNusI hope that "reboot" won't kill my vserver for good02:18
SemiNusdo you think this command is safe?02:19
SemiNusthe vserver is somewhere else "on the internet"02:19
SemiNusI have no idea if the server will come online again after I run the "reboot" command02:19

wispyi need to run fcsk. how can i do it?02:21
SemiNusleftyfb, I found a button "Herunterfahren" (which means "power off") on my customer panel02:21
wispymy linux has crashed02:21
SemiNusleftyfb, I just tried that02:21
leftyfbSemiNus: "sudo reboot" would have worked as well.02:22
leftyfbwispy: define crashed. Why do you think fsck will fix it?02:22
compdocwispy, boot a cd, and check the SMART info for the drive to see if its dying02:22
wispyleftyfb: "manual fcsk required" when i tried recovery mode02:23
SemiNusleftyfb, the server has rebooted.  Sandstorm still tells me:  "Detected Linux kernel version: 2.6.32-042stab120.16"02:23
wispycompdoc: ok. i have a usb. i can try that02:23
SemiNusdid I install the wrong package? "linux-headers-4.8.0-53"02:23
wispyleftyfb: it stopped responding, and after a hard reboot, it will not boot past grub. some errors detected02:24
compdocwispy, the disk utility can show the smart, or run sudo smartctl -a /dev/xxx02:24
leftyfbSemiNus: not sure what "Sandstorm" is, but it's possible you're running a VPS server which is utilizing a shared kernel which you cannot change by a simple install of a newer kernel. You'll need to contact your hosting provider.02:24
wispycompdoc: ok thank you02:24
SemiNusok leftyfb thank you02:24
compdocxxx being the whatever it turns out to be (dont use xxx)02:24
leftyfbwispy: step #1 make a backup. Either with dd/dd-rescue or clonezilla.02:25
leftyfbwispy: step #2 make sure you have made a backup02:25
kostkonwispy, if it does not go past grub only way to try to repair it is with a live usb02:25
wispyi'm now in busybox initramfs. sudo command not found02:25
wispykostkon: ok02:26
leftyfbwispy: step #3, use a live cd to run fsck on the drive ... but take note of errors in dmesg.... if there's I/O / sense-key errors, you likely have a bad drive and fsck isn't going to make the problem go away02:26

SchrodingersScatniee: why does it need a password?  You can run the same program that termbin.com uses if you want to be able to pipe something over netcat and have a hosted text file. that wouldn't have a password though.  Next closest thing would be something like nextcloud, but that seems like overkill for that same scenario.03:29

aienaI need some help. I want to build unrealircd for ubuntu.  I created a system user called 'unrealircd' using comand 'adduser --system --no-create-home --group unrealircd' it has no login shell. I a using "sudo -u username bash <<EOF\n <command>\n <command>\n EOF" I am running mkdir there it should create the directory as unrealircd user but it gives permission denined06:08
Aginoraiena: the user cannot create directores anywhere unless it has permissions to06:12
aienaAginor:  probably I need to allow write inside a folder06:12
aienaexecute means only enter the folder but not create sub folders06:13
aienaso I need to add rx for others to that folder06:13
Aginoraiena: you shouldn't need to set up a separate user jus to compile it, it might however be a good idea to do so for running it06:13
aienaso the system user can create a subnfolder in the parent folder06:13
aienaAginor: this seperate user is compiling and running it06:13
aienai want the compile dir and executiion dir to be owned by this user06:13
Aginoraiena: you need to create that directory by another user (like root using sudo) and then change ownership to that user06:14
Aginorsudo mkdir /blah/blah06:15
aienaAginor: ok so with chown06:15
Aginorsudo chown unrealircd.unrealircd /blah/blah06:15

aienae.g. chown 777 foo.txt works and changes user of the file to 777 even though user '777' was not created on the system06:18
Aginoraiena: it's user.group06:18
aienaAginor: I always thought it was user:group06:18
hateballaiena: And it is06:18
Aginoralthough that's the old syntax I realise now, it's colon that's the right way to do it06:18
AginorI just read the man page06:19
AginorI got confused06:19
Aginorit's the end of a long day for me :)06:19
hateballchown is used for ownership, chmod is used for permissions such as 77706:19
aienaok I ws like stunned with the , syntax06:19
hateballneither should be used without knowing what you're doing06:19
aienahateball:  yes I know what I meant is that chown works even if there is no system user by that name06:19
Aginoraiena: never change something to be world writable without knowing the implications (666, 777, etc)06:19
aienaalso root should never be used if you dont know what your doing either06:20
aienaAginor:  yes06:20
Aginoraiena: that's how security holes are created06:20
aienayes samba though is a bit of a pain without 777 (:06:20
aienasomehow files are created as user:usernameas group instead of user:group samba user is logged in as06:21

Wiciuand everyone10:40
WiciuYou guys are Good Men10:40
hateballI wouldnt go that far, but alright :D10:41
fallentreews2k3: it's possible that systemd is changing the way you set up limits, I'm not sur10:41
fallentreews2k3: s/sur/sure :)10:41
fallentreews2k3: looking at the docs, you don't need infinity but a number should suffice. If you used 32767 before, than you should put that in10:43
fallentreeinfinity is bad10:43
fallentreews2k3: also note that memcache has -c which may override systemd LimitNOFILE, if it's lower10:46
ws2k3fallentree thx for that10:46
ws2k3fallentree now another issue. when i run ulimit -n as root it shows me 100000010:47
ws2k3now i have started another proces(not memcached)10:47
ws2k3fallentree cat /proc/865/limits shows me this: Max open files            1024                 4096                 files10:47
fallentreews2k3: LimitNOFILE in service unit file completely overrides what's in /etc/security/limits.conf, because it's per service, not per user. ulimit shows per user, it's the old way10:48
ws2k3why my proces(thats runs as root) still have 1024 and 4096 as limit10:48
aienaHow do I recall a command string from history but not execute it ? I read somewhere you can use "!<number>" e.g. if in history it is the 254'th item then "!254" writes it into the current shelll but also executes it. How do I get it on the prompt but not execute it ?10:48
aiena*shell10:48
fallentreews2k3: I'm not sure but I think processes can lower that limit for themselves. Eg, nginx has an option that can override what's defined for it, but lower than system-set maximum.10:49
ws2k3aiena why not use history|grep "command ur looking for" and then just copy it?10:49
aienaws2k3:  think of a server with no gui and mouse10:49
aienaso liets say we cant copy that way10:49
aienathere must be another way with keyboard alone10:49
fallentreeaiena: hit Ctrl+R then start typing the command10:50
fallentree(assuming bash)10:50
aienafallentree:  command number from history10:50
aienahmm that works sort of10:51
ws2k3fallentree im pretty sure this proces does not limit it by itself10:51
ws2k3fallentree cause the same application on ubuntu 12.04 shows me this limit: Max open files            10240                10240                files10:51
aienafallentree:  how do I navigate throught alternatives with <c-R> ?10:51
aienalets say I have three commands in history starting with smbclient and I want to cherry pick one for modification10:52
fallentreeaiena: not sure10:52
aienaok10:53
aienafallentree:  suppose I pipe the command to vi10:53
aienacan I make whatever I typed in vi execute at shell prompt ?10:53
aienai forgot I know there is a way to pop up vi in the middle of typing to edit a command but forgot what you need to press for that but this is the reverse10:54
ws2k3fallentree i start the application from rc.local and then i have that limit10:54
ws2k3fallentree now i stopped the application and started it manualy again and now the max open files are correct10:55
fallentreeaiena: https://sanctum.geek.nz/arabesque/vi-mode-in-bash/10:55
ws2k3fallentree so it seems only at boot(when started from rc.local) i have this issue10:55
fallentreews2k3: is this on 16.04?10:55
aienafallentree:  hmm not talking about "set -o vi"10:55
konradosHow can I find out if I have installed 'kubuntu' or 'ubuntu' and then I installed kde? I mean - I really don't remember. $cat /etc/lsb-release gives me DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS" - does it mean it's ubuntu + kde?10:55
aienabut let me see your url10:55
ws2k3fallentree yes on 16.04 LTS10:55
hateballkonrados: yes, kubuntu is ubuntu base with different default packages10:56
aienathere is something that you type which actually opens up "vim" then you write out to a buffer and then on :wq your command string is updated and you press enter to run it10:56
hateballkonrados: it will always show Ubuntu10:56
fallentreews2k3: then why not write a service unit file for it? It's very easy, that's why systemd was invented, to cut the crap with all the init and configuration morass10:56
aienaonce you install vim most distro's symlink vi to vim10:56
konradoshateball, thanks, so I can't say if it's kubuntu or ubuntu and then kde installed separately?10:57
fallentreeaiena: I don't know but.... why don't you write to a file and then execute it?10:57
hateballkonrados: well, if it is ubuntu + kde then you likely have ubuntu-desktop and a lot of gnome stuff installed as well10:57
ws2k3fallentree yes after boot the issue is back again Max open files            1024                 4096                 files10:57
aienafallentree:  hmm that could work too :) with redirection10:57
aienae.g. !254 > foo.sh && vi foo.sh10:58
aienalet me try that10:58
konradoshateball, - thank you! Yes, I have some gnome stuff.10:58
hateballkonrados: but you can just as well have installed kubuntu and then some GTK app10:58
fallentreews2k3: it's possible systemd is interfering. there's actually a rc-local systemd service that wraps around the old rc local stuff, so it's possible it's imposing the defaults10:58
fallentreews2k3: really writing a unit file for your service is the best approach with systemd, and there you can set up whatever limits10:59
aienafallentree:  nah doesnt work10:59
hateballkonrados: the various metapackages for ubuntu-desktop or kubuntu-desktop will however not be a dependency for anything you install after initial install10:59
Wiciukonrados: of course you've some GNOME stuff because these come with UBUNTU. You just had add another enviroment that's KDE10:59
=== ogra is now known as ogra_
Wiciukonrados: if you like KDE, perhaps have a loot at Kubuntu.11:00

MrMojit0When I have choice the option: Encrypt the new Ubuntu installation for security (you will choose a security key in the next step).11:00
aienabut this is a workaround because we proxy through a file but better than nothing11:00
MrMojit0Do I also need to encrypt my home folder? I´m the only one who is gonna make use of this laptop so no other users are using it11:01
fallentreeaiena: so what _exactly_ are you trying to achieve? you're looking up a command in `history` by number and you want it laid out on the command line so you can edit before execution?11:01
Newbs123anyone have any idea on my problem? http://imgur.com/tDiVJQF internet is working fine update is working fine11:01
fallentreeaiena: maybe this would help:  https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/160356/how-do-i-auto-complete-a-command-from-the-command-history11:03
fallentreeaiena: the number 4. of the accepted answer, add that to ~/.inputrc11:03
fallentreeaiena: then open a new shell or logout/login. you start typing the command, and then arrows up and down will scroll through all the commands in history that START with what you typed.11:03
fallentreeaiena: simpler and easier than Ctrl+R and will get you quickly to the command for editing it before exec (esp. if in vi modE)11:04
fallentreeNewbs123: can you manually wget the URL listed under "E: Failed to fetch <url>"  ?11:05

Newbs123fallentree sorry i got dc'ed anyway what you think i should do? could you please point me to the right direction? thanks11:29
fallentreeNewbs123: Can you browse http://archive.ubuntu.com in the browser?11:30
Newbs123wait lemme check in this machine im using11:30
FManTX"Downloaded: 27 files, 714M in 0s (1395408448 GB/s)" :D11:30
Newbs123fallentree yes11:30
Newbs123fallentree yes im looking at it right now11:31
fallentreeajnr: when you do `stat <filename> | grep Size`  (use proper filename) on both machines, does it show exactly the same size in bytes?11:31
Newbs123fallentree i even browsed through the file the server was trying to get11:32
fallentreeNewbs123: well, you can try `apt-get clean` to clear local caches and try again. doesn't make sense though if you can browse to it, but not wget from command line, on the same machine.11:33
Newbs123ah different machine tho. im using windows pc to browse it11:33
Newbs123fallentree ah different machine tho. im using windows pc to browse it11:33
fallentreeNewbs123: eh11:33
fallentreeyou should check on the same machine11:33
Newbs123oh but i do not have gui on the ubuntu server11:34
fallentreeNewbs123: and the ping tests, you did on that machine or on your windows pc?11:34
dckxhi, I'm trying to configure my touchpad but the settings I add to /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-synaptics.conf are lost after rebooting. Is there a way to make these changes persistent?11:34
Newbs123fallentree no that was on the ubuntu server machine11:34
Newbs123everything else except the browsing part is on that ubuntu server11:34
auronandaceNewbs123: you could use a commandline browser like links11:35
fallentreeNewbs123: so, ping by hostname is okay, but you can't wget the URL, correct?11:35
Newbs123yes11:35
Newbs123auronandace: thanks ill go look it up on google.11:35
fallentreeNewbs123: can you wget any other URL? say wget https://google.com11:36
Newbs123fallentree: yes ping by hostname is ok but cant do wget11:36
Newbs123fallentree yes i just did now wget https://google.com11:36
Newbs123everything was ok11:36
fallentreeNewbs123: broken mirror then11:36
MrMojit0When I press on install for VirtualBox it keeps saying ¨Installing¨. It seems it freezed or is stuck. Does this mean I need to reboot or am I overconcerned11:36
Newbs123fallentree: what do i do? ive tried searching all over the net nobody seems to have the same problem as mine tho lol11:37
fallentreeNewbs123: try another mirror  https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+archivemirrors11:38
fallentreeNewbs123: or try another by country code in domain, like us.archive.ubuntu.com11:39
Newbs123fallentree so you mean ill change the ones on my sources list? i kinda did that already originally from ph.archive to just archive then tried gb.archive too11:40
Newbs123fallentree ill try to do us now see if it works thanks11:40
fallentreeNewbs123: so gb didn't work either?11:40
Newbs123yeah i got errors too11:40
Newbs123tried those before posting here earlier11:40
Newbs123if it works on my browser pc it shouldnt be a problem with my isp right?11:41
fallentreeNewbs123: try https instead of http in URLs of sources11:41
Newbs123fallentree alright ill test it out now11:41
Newbs123btw everytime i change source i should run apt-get update first before upgrade and installs right?>11:41
fallentreeNewbs123: yeah11:42
fallentreeNewbs123: also pastebin the /etc/apt/sources.list please11:42
ws2k3fallentree i have a strange issue.11:42
ws2k3fallentree i have started my application with a systemd unit file. but still the limits are not unlimited11:43
ws2k3fallentree Max open files            1024                 4096                 files11:43
fallentreews2k3: have you set the LimitNOFILE in the service unit file?11:43
Newbs123fallentree idk how to pastebin yet i havent installed anything on the server yet tho11:43
Newbs123right now im using https://archive.ubuntu.com on sources11:43
Newbs123running update now11:43
fallentreeNewbs123: cat /etc/apt/sources.list | nc termbin.com 999911:44
Newbs123oh one sec ill do that after the update11:44
fallentreeNewbs123: strange thing if the update is working fine, it's using the same sources.....11:44
Newbs123fallentree yeah thats what i thought too.11:45
Newbs123fallentree earlier when auronandace taught me to switch sources update and upgrade worked, but installs didnt. and after a while upgrade didnt work too11:46
auronandaceNewbs123: is it a physical server?11:46
Newbs123yes11:47
Newbs123fallentree ok now that i switched to https i get errors too on update11:47
Newbs123saying connection refused11:47
auronandaceNewbs123: are you using some kind of proxy?11:47
glickhey can anyone recommend a good pdf viewer?11:48
ws2k3fallentree i have LimitMEMLOCK=infinity11:48
Newbs123auronandace no not at all, iwanted to thinking it could bypass the problem but i did not now how to do it too lol11:48
Newbs123glick foxit i guess?11:48
fallentreews2k3: so how are you getting that "Max open files   1024 ..." line?11:48
glickNewbs123: foxit is not free software11:50
fallentreeNewbs123: can you pastebin the exact output, but please use termbin.com, don't screenshot. full output of operation that errors out11:50
ws2k3fallentree with cat /proc/$pid/limits11:50
Newbs123fallentree should i cancel this update now?11:50
auronandaceglick: evince works well for me11:50

Newbs123fallentree yes still showing failed stuffs11:51
Newbs123ok it just ended11:51
Newbs123fallentree how do it get it to tremblin again?11:51
fallentreeNewbs123: ok, do two things please, pastebin the sources.list and the full output of apt upgrade11:51
fallentreeNewbs123: cat <file> | nc termbin.com 999911:51
Newbs123where can i get the file for the output of apt update?11:52
hateballNewbs123: that gets on stdout, in front you11:52
hateballNewbs123: if you mean the logs of upgrade, then it is in /var/log/apt/history*11:53
Newbs123ahh alright thanks11:53
fallentreeNewbs123: run `script` to get the script shell, then run apt upgrade in it, then exit, then     cat typescript | nc termbin.com 999911:53
fallentreeyou can remove the typscript file after you're done if you want11:54
auronandaceNewbs123: you can run the command and pipe it: sudo apt upgrade | nc termbin.com 999911:54
Newbs123ok lemme give you the one from sources its probably easier11:54
YuGiOhJCJoh it was not libgtk2.0 but libgtk2.0-0, problem solved11:54
Newbs123fallentree http://termbin.com/8vpc11:55
Newbs123auronandace thanks ill do that now11:55
ws2k3fallentree cat /proc/1742/limits Max open files            1024                 4096                 files11:55
Newbs123fallentree auronandace http://termbin.com/e549 and http://termbin.com/8vpc11:56
fallentreeNewbs123: do that thing with script please so I can see the entire unmangled output.11:57
Newbs123fallentree ok11:57
fallentreews2k3: frankly, no idea unless that process is setting the limits itself11:57
Newbs123fallentree the script from the apt update might take a while12:00
Newbs123still running atm12:00
ws2k3fallentree so LimitMEMLOCK=infinity is enough? i do not need the LimitNOFILE ?12:00
fallentreews2k3: uh those are two different things12:01
fallentreeand indeed you did say you used MEMLOCK, sorry I misread12:01
fallentreeso you need LimitNOFILE for "Max open files"12:02
ws2k3fallentree i have added it LimitNOFILE=infinity and now it shows Max open files            65536                65536                files12:03
ws2k3fallentree i have now LimitNOFILE=1000000 and now i get Max open files            1000000              1000000              files  so it works now12:05
fallentreews2k3: 1M open files is quite a lot, perhaps you need a saner limit12:06

WiciuI wanted share files beetween ubuntu's in network (Local Network Share) and is asking me to install: Sharing service is not installed- and asks me to install SAMBA- I thought this is to share files in network beetween Lin>Win.12:07
fallentreeNewbs123: well I guess https isn't a solution. Can you revert back to http and try again please?12:07
Newbs123alright12:08

Newbs123il post it after its done12:10
fallentreek12:10
Wiciufallentree: alright then.12:10
Newbs123fallentree mostlikely its not cause its stucked at -% [waiting for headers] for almost a minute now12:11

Newbs123so far all i get to do is install this ubuntu server 14.04 and do an apt update lol12:13
auronandaceNewbs123: i noticed from your sources.list that you pasted you are using 14.04.1, any reason you didn't get the latest 14.04.5?12:15
Newbs123auronandace: ahh nothing really its just the installer i got from a friend. told me to test on it and its the one he used to build is own samba file server at home12:16
BluesKajno upsates/upgrades?12:17
auronandaceNewbs123: if you are running into an old bug it might be worth trying the latest version of the install media12:17
auronandaceNewbs123: 16.04 is also lts12:17
Newbs123auronandace fallentree : http://termbin.com/xfbi heres the one from apt-get upgrade12:18
=== yanope is now known as yanome
MrMojit0Yes, finally got VirtualBox running as first application on my Ubuntu desktop12:25
fallentreeNewbs123: sorry I have no idea, that simply doesn't make any sense12:27
fallentreeunless something in your network is doing deep packet inspection and messing things up12:28
auronandaceNewbs123: apt-get update is working but apt-get upgrade is not. that doesn't make sense to me. why would you be able to check updates but not able to download and install them?12:32
auronandaceNewbs123: since it is a fresh install you may as well try more recent install media. that way if you don't run into the same problem then it was a bug that got fixed12:34
fallentreeauronandace: thing is, he can't even wget the url12:35
Newbs123auronandace fallentree yeah sorry for the delayed response ill try to download the latest version see if it works and start reinstalling.12:35
Newbs123should i get the 14.04.5 or the 16.04?12:35
auronandaceNewbs123: up to you, 14.04 is supported till 2019 if that has any bearing on your choice12:36
MrMojit0For my work I need some Windows applications to run and since I´m new to Ubuntu it was importanted for me to have VirtualBox installed so I can open Windows when necassery12:36
Newbs123auronandace tbh idk the difference could you recommend which is best? im just trying to make a samba file server with raid  in it12:36
fallentreeNewbs123: then go with 16.0412:37
auronandaceNewbs123: for servers it is best to go for an lts release so 16.04 is the latest lts so that would likely be the best choice12:37
Newbs123fallentree alright ill go find the download link thanks12:37
Newbs123fallentree & auronandace thank you so much i do apologize for wasting your time on me :D12:38
auronandaceNewbs123: the iso for 14.04.1 was from 2014 so who knows what got fixed in the meantime12:38

Newbs123there are 2 on the site Ubuntu Server 17.04 and Ubuntu Server 16.04.2 LTS12:38
auronandaceNewbs123: 16.04.2 lts, servers are usually best with lts12:39
Newbs123auronandace ahh cool thanks12:39
auronandaceNewbs123: 17.04 will only be supported 9 months from release12:39
auronandaceNewbs123: lts are supported 5 years12:39
Newbs123i see cool thanks12:40
Newbs123wait im thinking maybe its because of my installer? cause the guy who gave the installer to me told me he burnt the iso on the cd whilst i used a usb bootable to do mine?12:40
auronandaceNewbs123: ubuntu isos can be burnt to cd or usb, theyare hybrid12:41
Newbs123yeah so its not on my installer alright ill just get the new one12:42
auronandaceNewbs123: anyway, you said the install went fine, you boot the server fine after installing it and you gete issues when trying to upgrade12:42
Lenhmm can someone help me a bit with "VFS: Found ext4 filesystem with invalid superblock checkusm." it's on encrypted partition and atm I'm in "emergency mode"12:43
Newbs123auronandace yes that is correct12:43
auronandaceNewbs123: you mentioned you changed resolv.conf earlier, pastebinning those changes might shed some light on what went wrong12:46
Newbs123auronandace http://termbin.com/j5lv12:47
Newbs123i only added nameserver 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 to it12:47
fallentreewasn't a dns issue, he could access stuff by hostname, even ping archive.ubuntu.com12:49
auronandaceNewbs123: you can ping google.com and 8.8.8.8 just fine but wget doesn't work. you can update fine but upgrade doesn't work. this is most puzzling12:50
fallentreewget google.com worked12:50
auronandaceah, just the specific archive wget didn't work?12:51
fallentreeyes, but then update did12:51
Newbs123http://termbin.com/gupk check this i tried to ping archive.ubuntu.com i suddenly had a 37% loss12:51
fallentreeNewbs123: try a bigger packet count, say ping -c 2012:52
Newbs123fallentree on it!12:52
Newbs123for some reason its kinda pinging slow now.12:53
Newbs123maybe because im downloading the latest lts lol12:53
fallentreethat shouldn't cause packet loss unless a router/hop upstream is overloaded12:53
Newbs123fallentree http://termbin.com/baz512:53
fallentreeyeah, looks good except that time but I suppose that's because you're running download over a crappy router12:55
fallentreeor... router deprioritizing icmp which is not so crappy  :)12:55
Newbs123i saw one article and it said "Replace url in.archive.ubuntu.com and security.ubuntu.com with old-releases.ubuntu.com"12:55
Newbs123but im kinda scared i wont be able to turn it back if it didnt work lol12:57
fallentreeNewbs123: that's for EOL upgrades, when you upgrade from an EOL'd release12:57
Newbs123ohh12:57
Newbs123is it ok to use rufus to burn the iso to usb? or best do it manually?12:59
bobomahello. Debian has release a fixed version of VLC some days ago. When is ubuntu following?12:59
fallentreeNewbs123: if you can wget the ISO from this installation of Ubuntu, you can simply dd it to the USB12:59
fallentree!info VLC12:59
ubottuvlc (source: vlc): multimedia player and streamer. In component universe, is optional. Version 2.2.4-14ubuntu2 (zesty), package size 39 kB, installed size 218 kB12:59
fallentreeboboma: it's in universe, so whenever the community provides an update12:59
fallentreeboboma: consider VLC from snaps, those are directly from the vendor and should be frequently up to date13:00
Newbs123fallentree oh i kinda downloaded it on the pc im using atm lol13:00
fallentreeNewbs123: then you'll need one of those tools, none of which I'm familiar with13:01
Newbs123fallentree yep. i wanna switch to an entire ubuntu badly. but maybe one step at a time lol13:02
DesetudeHey all, my friend has installed Ubuntu, and it launches successfully. But the GRUB menu to choose which entry isn't shown, how can he enable it?13:02
fallentreeDesetude: iirc you press and hold the Shift key while it's booting. grub menu is hidden by default unless the last boot was unsuccessful. There should be an option to make it permanently available, though.13:03
DesetudeWhere is that option?13:04
fallentreeDesetude: edit /etc/default/grub and comment out (put # at the beginning of the) line GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0, then update grub with  `sudo update-grub`13:05
Newbs123im only at installation and im already having unknown to mankind problems. is this a sign that linux is not for me? lol13:08
fallentreeNewbs123: it's very likely something has changed since 14.04 (and fixed in 14.04.x) in the format of package metadata and it breaks with a misleading/unhelpful message that you get13:09
Newbs123hmm yeah. im also figuring maybe from the updates that i get that is no longer matching with the old server i have13:10
Newbs123fallentree thanks anyway for helping out you too auronandace. i hope i didn't give you guys a headache lol13:11
fallentreeand you did get an iso from a friend, so it's probably an older image with problems like this13:11
fallentreeyw :)13:12
Newbs123fallentree yeah but the thing is he is still using the same server he used it on. though he said since he installed it like 2 years back he hasn't done anything else to it not an upgrade or update to it13:13
john_ramboI see there a lot of packages similar to wine .... I want to install wine ..Which package should I install ?13:13
Newbs123alright installers ready. lets try this out13:14
fallentreeNewbs123: well there -- he didn't upgrade :)13:14
fallentreeNewbs123: so he doesn't have this issue, lol. He does, however, have a megaton of other issues, security primarily.13:14
Newbs123fallentree: if it aint broke dont fix it method ? lol13:14
fallentreeNewbs123: except it IS broken.13:15
fallentreehence updates with bug and security fixes.13:15
Newbs123fallentree so far he didn't have any issues but i think if he did do an upgrade it would probably have tons of issues lol13:15
fallentreeexactly13:16
Newbs123anyway will the commands i used on the old version still work on the 16?13:16
Newbs123cause ive read somewhere that the commands he used to use on the old versions no longer works on the new ones13:16
fallentreeI hope you do realize how stupidly insane it is to run a 3 year old server that has never upgraded.13:16
Newbs123some*13:16
Newbs123i kinda get the picture. lol, so mostlikely if he is to upgrade he'd need to redo the whole server right?13:17
john_ramboI want to install wine from the command line ... Dont want to use the GUI ..Any ideas ?13:17
fallentreeNewbs123: the init is systemd, as of 15.04, so that changes the way you interact with the services, although the old "servic X start" and friends is still supported13:17
maddawg2Newbs123, yes i would just rebuild at this point13:17
Newbs123i see13:17
maddawg2dont just do a dist upgrade might break stuff13:17
maddawg2might not13:17
fallentreeNewbs123: it's not just the redoing, the problem is in unpatched software on a server which is, because it's a server, available over a network.13:17
Newbs123maddawg2 i see13:17
maddawg2but personally if it's an important server then i would just redo it13:18
maddawg2what is it serving13:18
maddawg2i mean alot of this entirely depends on what kind of server it is13:18
Newbs123maddawg2 he kinda have alot of project files in it. he's a freelance vfx artist. so mostly video files are init i think its running on a raid 10 with 4 3tb wd drives13:19
maddawg2the term "server" is a bit generic i mean it could be "serving" anything from your home music collection to proprietary files13:19
Newbs123he uses it the same as im trying to do just as a samba file server13:19
maddawg2well has he considered using a NAS or SAN to store the files13:19
roryWhen might I want to use "exec" in an upstart script, instead of just running a command directly?13:19
maddawg2i mean not neccessary but it's nice to keep the files elsewhere in case yo need to douche the server13:20
Newbs123i think he mentioned it but he said they were too expensive and he had an extra computer lying around so he just used it13:20
maddawg2i have a synology i think i paid like $600 all said and done for 16TB13:20
maddawg2Newbs123, is it a virtual machine (the server that is)13:21
Newbs123maddawg2 nah its a physical machine aswell but its components are not really like server stuffs. he's using a normal pc stuffs i7 processors and regular ddr3 rams13:22
maddawg2yea.. that can run vmware esxi just fine, the hard part now with starting over on that machine is that there's risk of lsing the data unless you're super careful13:23
maddawg2or move it externally to something to back it up13:23
maddawg2then start over13:23
maddawg2the reason i say that is that the newer versions of ubuntu have new ways of doing things (like network configuration) and startup scripts so you'd have to redo alot of the setup anyways13:24
maddawg2it's much easier to just rebuild and reconfigure SAMBA from scratch13:24
maddawg2doing a dist upgrade might break some stuff (might not tho)13:24
Newbs123hmm yeah i figured that much. the only hard part for him probably would be backing up and restoring those terrabytes of files13:25
maddawg2cloud drive?13:25
maddawg2what's his upload speed?13:25
Newbs123ah that idk13:25
maddawg2cuz maybe i could provide him a temporary unlimited google drive13:25
maddawg2he could upload the files there (could take weeks tho)13:26
Newbs123btw im installing right now an 16.04 lts and when i get to choose software to install a certain standard system utils are checked should i uncheck it? it wasn't there when i installed 14.04 lts lol13:26
bobomafallentree, where to find vlc snaps=13:26
maddawg2or you guys get an external drive or NAS (which is what i'd do anyways if I were him if he only wants SAMBA)13:26
fallentreemaddawg2: where did you get the temporary unlimited google drive that will accept TBs of upload AND download?13:27
maddawg2fallentree, from google?13:27
Newbs123maddawg2 oh i see ill go ask him later and let you know13:27
maddawg2it's part of the gsuite fallentree13:27
Newbs123lol13:27
maddawg2it's only $10 a month13:27
fallentreeboboma: `sudo snap install vlc`   :)13:27
fallentree$10 is 1TB13:27
maddawg2i can simply add a user under my "business"13:27
maddawg2no it isnt13:27
maddawg2it's $10 per user for unlimited google drive for business13:28
fallentreelooking at the price list :)13:28
maddawg2https://gsuite.google.com/pricing.html?tab_activeEl=tabset-companies13:28
maddawg2look under business13:28
maddawg2$10 per month per user13:28
bobomafallentree, is this a trustworthy source?13:28
fallentreemaddawg2: read the fine print ;)13:29
maddawg2but they dont enforce the the 1TB limit for users under 513:29
maddawg2yes i know the fine print13:29
fallentreeboboma: yes, snaps are (probably) the future of package delivery, and are fully officially supported on Ubuntu, being a product of Canonical ;)13:29
maddawg2i have unlimited13:29
maddawg2it's well known it's not enforced13:29
MrMojit0What is a good client to install remote connecting software?13:29
maddawg2in fact i have 22TB on my gdrive13:29
fallentreeboboma: but eh... yeah, those come straight from the vendor so "trustworthy" depends on the vendor's practices13:29
Newbs123i wonder if google drive can be opened in mainland china lol13:30
maddawg2and if you remove a user within 1 month you dont ge tbilled for that use13:30
fallentreemaddawg2: that's awesome then.13:30
maddawg2fallentree, indeed... i use it for my plex server13:30
bobomafallentree, thx13:30
maddawg2so i can simply add a user to my gsuite and remove it within 30 days to avoid the bill.. effectively given him a temporary unlimited drive13:31
maddawg2not worth it tho if he has an upload of like 4mbps... it'd take months to get the data there lol13:31
maddawg2i have a gigabit pipe so i can upload TB in a matter of days13:31
Newbs123whats your up speed maddawg2?13:32
maddawg2it's a symmetrical gigabit connection13:32
maddawg2technically i'm only guarenteed 940/880 but i get more than that13:32
Newbs123damn fast13:32
maddawg2typically my uploads are around 940 as well13:32
Newbs123i get like 50 here lol13:33
Newbs123max13:33
Newbs123lol13:33
maddawg2yea for $70 a month it's nothing13:33
Newbs123done installing ubuntu 16.0413:33
MrMojit0Anyone that could me out on a good remote desktop for Ubuntu to connect to other servers?13:33
Newbs123time to setup network13:33
Newbs123i hope its still the same13:33
maddawg2what packages did you select Newbs12313:33
maddawg2also which ubuntu did you install?13:33
maddawg2server or desktop13:33
Newbs123i installed server 16.04 lts13:34
maddawg2gotcha13:34
glickMrMojit0: remote desktop? X has a remote option13:34
glickus ssh with the -g option13:34
Newbs123and for the packages i only selected the one already selected the install standard system utilities13:34
maddawg2i typically only install the base system and add what i need after13:34
MrMojit0glick: I read about Remmina13:35
maddawg2but that's just preference... prob doesnt really matter tbh13:35
maddawg2just make sure you do an upggrade13:35
Newbs123ok13:35
Newbs123so right now ill setup the static netowrk13:35
maddawg2sudo apt-get upgrade and also do a dist-upgrade just in case13:35
maddawg2sometimes there are updates after an install13:35
maddawg2unless you do the net install or select download updates during install or whatever it's called13:36
Newbs123i see13:36
Newbs123would it still be /etc/network/interfaces to do the static networking?13:37
Newbs123ok i guess not the path was blank lol13:38
maddawg2yes but i think it's slightly different in how it's configured now13:39
maddawg2there is no eth1 or whatever13:39
maddawg2see this: http://www.configserverfirewall.com/ubuntu-linux/ubuntu-set-static-ip-address/13:39
maddawg2not official ubuntu but it's very straightforward for a newb13:39
fallentreeNewbs123: you can still use that file for static network config. although the pattern nowadays is to use a file in /etc/network/interfaces.d/  named after the interface you're configuring13:40
fallentreeit's the same format as the proper interfaces file13:41
Newbs123fallentree yeah but the path with /etc/network/interfaces is blank now13:41
Newbs123no nothing on it13:41
fallentreeNewbs123: you can always create it13:41
Newbs123ill go check the one u just mentioned13:41
fallentreeNewbs123: `man interfaces` for help and examples13:41
Newbs123fallentree i see i thought they were like should be there lol13:42
Newbs123ill just follow the pattern you provided thanks13:42
fallentreeA bit weird that the interfaces file is not at least present with `auto lo` setup13:43
fallentreebut it doesn't matter, either way is okay13:43
maddawg2fallentree, yes thats what i was saying it's different in 16.0413:44
maddawg2hence the url13:44
fallentreemy 16.04 servers all have the interfaces file, each doing just source-directory /etc/network/interfaces.d13:45
fallentreethen again I install ubuntu from debootstrap with custom installation scripts :)13:45
fallentreeand my 17.04 desktop has the auto lo in interfaces13:46
fallentreemkay, I'm out for the day.13:47
Newbs123fallentree my mistake i typed in networking instead of network sorry ill go read a few notes over google first before starting out to avoid further mistakes lol13:49
Newbs123thanks fallentree13:49

skinuxthe cat worked14:23
jnewtBluesKaj: maybe, but i'm not looking for any of that.  i just want it to not freeze14:24
auronandaceMrMojit0: what desktop are you using? do you see 2 virtualbox windows open (one is the vm and the other is virtualbox itself)?14:24
Xrantooskinux can't you do uname -a14:25
MrMojit0auronandace: Only the VM it self, and I just noticed I get an error as well. Failed to open a session for the Virtual machine14:25
auronandaceMrMojit0: how are you launching the vm?14:26
MrMojit0Currently it launch it self, when I search for VirtualBox, it will auto select the VM and boots it14:27
auronandaceMrMojit0: can you take a picture of the error?14:27
MrMojit0auronandace: I think that needs to wait and I need to solve it on my own. Just installed Ubuntu and I don´t know how to make printscreen´s.14:29
MrMojit0Do you know by any chance how to search into ¨TOP¨ to filter on VM14:29
MrMojit0https://stackoverflow.com/questions/35169724/vm-in-virtualbox-is-already-locked-for-a-session-or-being-unlocked14:29
MrMojit0I understand the error now. When I try to reopen the VirtualBox that error popups meaning the VM is already spinning. Now I need to find away to open the VirtualBox Manager to create a new VM14:30
aotaointbinor you could just use vboxmanage14:31
Newbs123auronandace is it possible to enter the server itself thru outside local network? i kinda needed to go somewhere but i dont feel like stopping what im doing right now lol14:32
MrMojit0Damm I found it14:32
auronandaceNewbs123: you'll need to set up ssh and port forwarding on your router if you want to access it from the internet14:32
MrMojit0I need to use a command-line to open the box14:32
Newbs123auronandace ahh. a topic for another day i guess. lol14:33
Newbs123thanks man14:33
MrMojit0command-line: Virtualbox, this will open the VirtualBox Manager14:33
auronandaceNewbs123: ssh-client is usually installed by default which allows you to connect to other machines but you'll need ssh-server to lat others connect to you14:34
Newbs123auronandace for now ill settle with teamviewer + mobaxterm for now i guess lol14:34
aotaointbinyou could just use vboxmanage.14:35

roryI know this cannot be done using tail, but I would like a way to "tail -F *.log" and have new files which match the glob start being monitored as they appear. Is this possible at all or do I need to write something?15:29
roryI know if I use "tail -F file1.log file2.log" then it will pick up files as they appear. But that only works for explicitly mentioned filenames. Not globs. Because the glob is interpreted by the shell.15:30
roryI have asked this question before and had trouble communicating what I meant, so hopefully I have made my question clear.15:31

Kmanhey, My laptop has 8 GB ram, and 5GB swap16:37
Kmanbut computer still use swap even though there is still 5GB ram free16:37
Kmani have to swapoff -a16:38
Jack_Sparrow__Things seem to be moving to a swap file16:38
PosterI am fairly sure the kernel intelligently decides what to hold in RAM versus swap16:38
Posterie something that is rarely or never used versus something like buffering disk IO16:39
Posteryou can also look at adjusting your swappiness value16:39
IchimusaiFor a server system I generally set swappiness to the most aggressive value (100) in order to effectively swap out all dead meat and free space for both disk buffers and for things that needs memory16:40
naccKman: what version of ubuntu? also, swapping itself is not indicative of a problem. If you don't want to use swap, then don't have swap16:41
IchimusaiFor a desktop I set it lower because if you have a too high swappiness and leave it for a while and come back some of what your desktop needs are going to be swapped out creating some lag while it is retreived again which leads to a bit of stress.16:41
IchimusaiSwap is generally very good.16:42
Posteryeah I really wouldn't worry much about it unless you actually ran out of memory and your active applications or services had to write to swap16:42
IchimusaiAt least it beats the OOM killer when you run out of RAM :) But with sufficient amounts of RAM you can disable it completely if you like.16:42
Kmani am using Ubuntu 14.0416:43
Kmanthe problem is the im doing program which needs 1GB ram to store data, i am afraid the swap is being used16:44
naccKman: why does that make you afraid?16:45
gradyand why 14.0416:45
Posteryou can just monitor it while running16:45
naccgrady: 14.04 is still supported16:45
Kmanmy program executes properly, until i get big data to input. then core dump or program killed :(16:45
gradynacc, sure it is but even then, why :)16:45
Posteryeah 14.04 is good until 4/201916:45
IchimusaiKman: Then you should allocate the memory and use mlock() for keeping it in RAM.16:46
Posterbusinesses can move slow with technology refreshes16:46
naccKman: sounds like a different problem, swapping won't result in kills necessarily16:46
IchimusaiKman: However, don't do that unnecessarily for large chunks.16:46
naccKman: mlock() if you must have residency16:46
naccgrady: not really relevant in the support channel16:46
Posteryou may have to adjust your ulimit too16:46
IchimusaiKman: Swap is not the culprit of the core dump. (Unless you get killed by OOM conditions)16:46
Postercould be hitting a limit there16:47
gradynacc, i just like to know16:47
IchimusaiKman: You should run the debugger and see what actually bails.16:48
Kmanmlock() ? i used malloc and new16:48
IchimusaiKman: mlock() locks the virtual memory you allocated into active memory16:48
gradyi think that he using it on some low/old system because there isnt mutch memory to play with, and that or what is intesting to hear more16:48
naccKman: sounds like a misunderstanding of the problem16:48
gradytre16:48
naccgrady: it's not about interest or liking -- the support channel is for resolving the issue, not for irrelevant background discussion16:49
IchimusaiKman: Use valgrind also to make sure you are not doing something nasty.16:49
gradynacc, dont be so serious :D16:49
* Ichimusai hardly believes how many issues valgrind usually are able to find.16:49
Kmanwell, i allocated 200M unsigned ints (4 bytes) to memory, i am afraid that the system kills the program 'cause its too large? but my OS is 64bit16:50
Postertake a look at the values of "ulimit -a" as the user which is running your program16:51
Posteryou may need to adjust them for it to fit16:51
Ichimusaimalloc() itself can handle as much as the address mode allows and what can be gotten as a contiguous block.16:52
Kmanmax locked memory       (kbytes, -l) 6416:52
Kmanmax locked memory       (kbytes, -l) 6416:52
Posterit's not too uncommon to have to tweak them when running larger services such as databases or high traffic webservers16:53
naccKman: you really just need to debug your program. swapping is not causing a kill.16:53
Kmangdb or valgrind?16:53
IchimusaiIf the malloc() fails you should see that in the return conditions.16:53
naccKman: you have yet to show us any logging, or the message when your program is killed.16:53
naccKman: they have different purposes16:53
IchimusaiA simple if(NULL != mptr) printf("Allocation succeded.\n); in the right place might even suffice.16:54

naccKman: that doesn't tell us anything. What kills it? Why does it get killed. These are things you need to figure out (and are not ubuntu support topics themselves)16:55
Ichimusaikman: May I also suggest you divvy up your blob of memory in a number of buffers instead because large allocations may force the system to swap to create contiguous memory. And as also been already suggested, check the limits with ulimit -a16:57
KmanIchimusai: what information is useful from ulimit -a16:59
Kmanhttps://thepasteb.in/p/KOh8pBYpAZ4HJ17:00
naccKman: do you know how to debug programs? that's really all that's needed right now17:02
IchimusaiKman: It mainly -m and -l that would affect you.17:03
IchimusaiKman: And -v and they all look good.17:04
IchimusaiKman: But break out gdb and let it tell you where it fails and why.17:04
IchimusaiKman: And run it through valgrind when you do things like this as it is very helpful in figuring out if you happen to use an uninitiated ptr at some place or do otherwise bad things.17:05

timetocodei notice i can't actually get near 400% cpu without seeing some performance problems (even by about 300%) but this might just have to do with the vps sharing resources or something (i dont know really how that works)20:57
IntelCorecache and running needed stuff will budge/fill resources20:58

IntelCoreNPM agents can now test network connectivity from Linux workstations and servers. The following distributions are supported: CentOS Linux 7, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.2, Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, Ubuntu 15.04, Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, Debian 8, and SUSE Linux Server 12.21:50
naccIntelCore: why are you pasting that here?21:50
IntelCorea person had asked earlier21:51
naccIntelCore: ok, so you direct it at that person.21:51
naccIntelCore: otherwise it's just noise21:51
IntelCoreidk if they are on, i forget21:51

IntelCoreI am looking for a system process monito.  All I see is for server21:54
YankDownUnderIntelCore, Like what kind? htop? glances? Something more?21:55
naccIntelCore: ok, i'm assuming you're just being a troll now. If it's a MS product you are referring to, it's irrelevant to the Ubuntu support channel. If it's the nodejs thing, it's been in Ubuntu for a long time. And you know (because I've told you before), that you should actually direct your comments to someone if you are responding to someone.21:55
krnlklinkI'm trying to install Mint 18.1 on an imac 20" 5,1. It installs properly using BIOS emulation mode and the Radeon X1600 is initialized fine but when I try and install using EFI the installer hangs on video card initialization and I need to modify boot line with nomodeset. Any way to get the X1600 to work in ubuntu via EFI?21:55
nacc!mint | krnlklink21:55
ubottukrnlklink: The Ubuntu channels can only provide support for Ubuntu and its official flavors, since other distributions and derivatives have repository and software changes. So please use their dedicated support venues, for example: Linux Mint (#linuxmint-help on irc.spotchat.org), Kali Linux (#kali-linux), and LXLE (#lxle)21:55

SemiNusplease, I need help!21:58
SemiNusI was here before today, because of the chinese IP addresses trying to log in (failed login attempts)21:58
SemiNusI seems like they hacked my server with success21:58
SemiNushttps://dpaste.de/UkTX/raw21:59
SemiNus300 GB of 300 GB are used21:59
SemiNushow can I find out where they saved data?21:59
SemiNusI must find out what kind of data they saved on my server,  and if it's illegal, I must inform the police21:59
naccSemiNus: you can't, since the system is already compromised21:59
maddawg2why do you think the chinese got in?21:59
krnlklinkThanks Yank, will give it a try.22:00
maddawg2also why arent you using fail2ban or something22:00
YankDownUnderkrnlklink, Peace, bro.22:00
SemiNusmaddawg2, because of the IP addresses that showed up on the failed login attempts22:00
SemiNusmaddawg2, I am using fail2ban since a few hours ago22:00
xzSemiNus: you still have some space on tmpfs22:00
SemiNusbut that was probably too late22:00
xzSemiNus: it's not that bad22:00
maddawg2SemiNus, that is common that doesnt mean they got in22:00
SemiNushow can I show where large amount of data resides?22:00
maddawg2they just attack anything that appears open22:00
SemiNusI know 80 GB should be is /var/www/22:01
maddawg2but i'd make sure you have a firewall in place and block china IP addresses22:01
SemiNushow can I see where a lot of data is beside of that?22:01
xzSemiNus: easy thing is to ssh in on different port than 2222:01
SemiNusxz, can't they find out the port?22:01
xzSemiNus: if somebody targetted you, they can do many things22:01
maddawg2are you using ubuntu server or desktop SemiNus ?22:02
SemiNusmaddawg2, ubuntu server as far as I know22:02
xzSemiNus: but 'failed attempts to ssh' as you described is a common thing22:02
SemiNusI rented a vserver with ubuntu on it22:02
xzSemiNus: there are robots that are trying to ssh in everywhere and anywhere22:02
maddawg2yea they just try known ports to host ssh22:02
maddawg2RDP has the same thing on windows22:02
SemiNusok22:02
xzSemiNus: I have the same thing on VPS boxes22:02
Sleakeralright I've figured out part of the issue I've been having on the ubuntu disc.22:02
maddawg2but a proper firewall would do you well with fail2ban22:02
SemiNusjust for this very moment -> how can I show a pie chart to see where what amount of data resides?22:02
maddawg2SemiNus, are you using ubuntu server or desktop22:02
xzSemiNus: also, make sure to use strong passwords22:03
Sleakerso the 14.04.5 disc runs ethdetect and finds pcnet32 (vmware) and loads the driver fine.22:03
SemiNusI am very nervous, there are 200 GB of additional data on my server22:03
SemiNusI could be hold liable if that is some kind of illegal stuff22:03
xzSemiNus: because 123456 for root and ssh on port 22 is an easy job for them - that's what they look for22:03

the_counthello! Ubuntu says that I have to enter in my login credentials in again because unlocking the keyring failed22:49
nacccarpediembaby: no, you are sshing somewhere22:50
carpediembabyah22:50
nacccarpediembaby: so run `ssh -vvv <somewhere>`22:50
jellybut yeah, if everything else fails presumably you can just uninstall it22:50
jellyand possibly lose any data in there22:50
pseudopadHello. I have a mobile broadband card in my laptop, and even if it's set to disabled, ubuntu keeps nagging me to input the pin for it. Is there a way to stop this from happening?22:51
jellySemiNus: what does /etc/systemd/system/zammad-websocket-1.service look like btw?22:51
carpediembabynacc nacc: yes, got it. Its stuck after this output: http://paste.ubuntu.com/24731130/22:52
pseudopadWithout disabling it in the uefi, that is. I like having the option available to me without restarting22:52
SemiNusjelly, I just uninstalled zammad22:52
jellyfairy nuff22:52
SemiNusjelly, not even urban dictionary could clarify that => http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=fairy%20nuff22:53
SemiNuswhat is "fairy nuff" ?22:53
the_countI don't know much past that for how to fix ti22:54
SemiNussounds like a really interesting idiom?22:54
naccSemiNus: "fair enough"22:54
pseudopadEnough fairies, probably22:54
SemiNusOH22:54
SemiNusthank you!22:54
the_countIt says "Enter password to unlock your login keyring" and "The login keyring did not get unlocked when you logged in to your computer"22:55
carpediembabynacc: Nevermind, my bad. All this time i had the wrong proxy address...22:56
IntelCoreSemiNus - look over that cve pdf.. https://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvekey.cgi?keyword=XSS22:56

SemiNusthank you IntelCore22:56
psychoticwarriorSometimes by default root cant login unless you edit /etc/ssh/ssh_config or /etc/ssh/sshd_config22:57
pnwiseCan LVM be set for a partition or I have to use the whole drive?22:57
jellywhat nacc said!22:57
nacc!who | psychoticwarrior: i'm pretty sure you've been told this before...22:59
ubottupsychoticwarrior: i'm pretty sure you've been told this before...: As you can see, this is a large channel. If you're speaking to someone in particular, please put their nickname in what you say (use !tab), or else messages get lost and it becomes confusing :)22:59
nacccarpediembaby: yw22:59
IntelCorepnwise google your question23:00
naccpnwise: you can put LVM on a partition, afaict (you make the partition a PV and then LV underneath it)23:00
the_countDoes anyone have any ideas?23:00
nacc!google | IntelCore23:00
ubottuIntelCore: While Google is useful for helpers, many newer users don't have the google-fu yet. Please don't tell people to "google it" when they ask a question.23:00
pnwiseI tried googling but the combination lvm and partition usually shows how to manage partitions. I tried on a virtual machine to see how will that work but there is no options on installation to set LVM on a single partition, only if I isntall on the whole drive23:02
naccpnwise: the installer won't support it, as it's not very common23:03
naccpnwise: you would leave the partitoin empty and then manually do it after boot23:03
Epx998anyone using maas?23:03
the_countHello! I am having problems with my login keyring, it asks me to enter in the password again after login, does anyone have any Ideas?23:03
naccEpx998: i think there is an IRC channel for it (see !alis) and or use #ubuntu-server23:03
pseudopadthe_count: do you use automatic login?23:03
antonio4200 I'm trying to get my wired xbox 360 controller to work in 16.04.  What do I need to do?23:04
pnwisenacc thanks will see how will taht work23:04
the_countpseudopad: I do not, all of the answers I am finding deal with autologin... I wasn't able to login for the past couple weeks unless I was in the terminal, and I reinstalled a bunch of packages today, and I can login, but the window manager crashes every time23:05
YankDownUnderantonio4200, https://www.howtoforge.com/tutorial/how-to-configure-your-gamepad-on-ubuntu/23:05
Epx998nacc: thanks mate23:06
pseudopadDoes it work after you re-enter the password?23:08
the_countpsuedopad: No23:09
the_countpseudopad: No23:09
the_countpseudopad: Also, when it partially worked before, shortcuts took about 20 seconds to respond23:11
coffeeguyoh yay an nvidia driver update for 16.04 :)23:14
coffeeguyis sudo grub-reload to reload grub?23:15
nacccoffeeguy: sudo update-grub23:16
coffeeguyoh thanks nacc :)23:16
nacccoffeeguy: well, depends on what you mean by 'reload grub' -- that's normally done automatically23:17
nacccoffeeguy: update-grub just regenerates the config file(s)23:17
coffeeguyi remember now it's update-grub that i wanted23:18
kristhiangood day, i am having a hard time installing git on my system23:18
kristhian16.04.1 xenial23:19
kristhianhttp://termbin.com/xzpd23:19
nacckristhian: `sudo apt install git`23:19
kristhiansame issue23:19
nacckristhian: have you run `sudo apt update` recently?23:19
kristhianthere is a dependency error23:19
kristhianyes nacc23:20
nacckristhian: apt policy liberror-perl23:20
nacckristhian: `sudo apt install git liberror-perl`23:20
the_countNo ideas?23:20
nacckristhian: for those two commands, provide their output in a pastebin23:20
kristhianyes nacc http://termbin.com/17wt23:22
nacckristhian: apt policy liberror-perl23:22
kristhianhttps://pastebin.com/MzDk42nQ23:23
nacckristhian: are you using non-standard repositories?23:23
nacc!info liberror-perl xenial23:23
ubottuliberror-perl (source: liberror-perl): Perl module for error/exception handling in an OO-ish way. In component main, is optional. Version 0.17-1.2 (xenial), package size 19 kB, installed size 54 kB23:23
nacckristhian: it's definitely present23:23
the_countI have been stuck with this problem for a month and a half and no one is willing to help me23:24
kristhiani did just reinstalled my OS, since i have an issue yesterday regarding npm23:25
kristhianthat i have removed "sudo"23:25
kristhianbut it is the same OS that i have downloaded from ubuntu site23:25
nacckristhian: pastebin `sudo apt update` output please23:25
kristhianok23:26
nacckristhian: and `lsb_release -d` output23:26
kristhianok23:26
kristhianlsb_release -d23:26
kristhianDescription:Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS23:26
the_countI have been stuck with this problem for a month and a half and no one is willing to help me23:27
nacckristhian: if it reports 16.04.1, then I think you are not fully up to date, fwiw. Have you run `sudo apt update; sudo apt full-upgrade`?23:28
kristhianjust sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade23:28
kristhiannot sudo apt full-upgrade23:28
kristhianand what is the difference between sudo-apt full upgrade and dist-upgrade btw?23:29
nacckristhian: dist-upgrade is old for apt-get backwards compatibility23:29
kristhianill try full-upgrade23:30
nacckristhian: well, it probably does't matter to this problem23:30
kristhianill just wait, updating first then pastebin it to you23:30
nacckristhian: it's weird that your system can't find the packages that exist23:30
nacckristhian: ok23:30
the_countI have been stuck with this problem for a month and a half and no one is willing to help me???23:31
kristhianactually i am having trouble connecting with some archives23:31
nacckristhian: yeah, i think you have a buggy network or something -- it doesn't seem right23:31
kristhianhttps://pastebin.com/A2ArAEjB23:32
nacckristhian: yes, the mirror you are using appears to be broken, don't use it.23:32
nacckristhian: or your networking is, i can't tell23:32
kristhianwhat is wrong with the_count btw, he seems to be upset, no one is listening to him23:34
kristhianand how do i change mirrors, since i am only using sudo apt update23:34
mechmasterhi, I wonder , can I install ubuntu on dynamic disk, /or is there easy way to convert to basics/ (dual-boot win10)? thanks23:35
kristhianubuntu just automatically does it for me, but if the mirrors were broken, then how do i find alternative links for it?23:35
nacckristhian: edit /etc/apt/sources.list23:36
naccthe_count: what is your exact issue in one line?23:37
Bashing-ommechmaster: See: https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1692248 .23:38
kristhiannacc: im here, what exactly do i have to do with this, change them to "us" instead of "ph"23:38
the_countnacc: I'm not completely sure, but I know for sure that when I log in, a window pops up right away, and says that the keyring was not unlocked... The display manager no longer starts either.23:39
nacckristhian: that would work, but will route to the us, and if you are in the phillipines, that might be slow: https://askubuntu.com/questions/890348/ph-archive-ubuntu-com-is-not-working23:39
the_countnacc: And asks me to re-enter my password23:39
naccthe_count: did you make some changes? e.g., switch desktop environments, install 3rd party packages, etc. recently?23:40
kristhianis it possible that you the_count clicked on a malware, and that pop up is to gain information of him?23:41
mechmaster@Bashing-om , in windows parent os , can i install ubuntu on dynamic disk , without converting....23:42
the_countA couple months ago when Canonical announced that they were going to make the switch to Gnome, I made it early, and it worked fine... Later, I had installed anbox, and when I removed it, things went haywire, the keyring notification popped up every time.23:42
naccthe_count: what is anbox?23:42
naccthe_count: it sounds like anbox is the likely culprit -- not an ubuntu package?23:43
Bashing-om mechmaster Short answer is no . That file system is proprietary to Windows .23:43
the_countnacc: it runs android applications natively on linux... It is a snap package, and was removed through the snap manager23:43
naccthe_count: ah but it's a 'classic' snap -- and removal does not actually do anything with classic snaps :/23:45
naccthe_count: i would suspect the snap did something funky -- but it's hard to say. Given that it only happened after installing it, I would fresh install ubuntu gnome, i think23:45
the_countnacc: No, it is installed with: ' snap install --classic anbox-installer && anbox-installer ' and the anbox-installer has an option for installation or removal. I used it's removal23:46
naccthe_count: oh i see23:46
the_countnacc: It actually happened after removing it with the anbox-installer command23:46
naccthe_count: when you had anbox installed, did everything work?23:46
the_countnacc: When it was installed, my custom and ubuntu's default shortcuts took about 20 seconds or longer to respond, otherwise, it worked fine23:47
kristhiannacc: excuse me again, when ubunt is asking to check apt list --upgradeable, can i just issue the command "sudo apt upgrade"?23:49
kristhianto upgrade all that is in the list?23:49
naccthe_count: ok, i would try reinstalling it?23:49
nacckristhian: yes23:49
kristhianthanks23:49
the_countnacc: and then removing it again?23:49
naccthe_count: no, just see if your system works23:51
naccthe_count: then talk to the snap owner about why it breaks your system23:51
the_countnacc: Ok... Thank you!23:51
kristhianand the_count try not to spam again, just wait for someone to respond :P23:51
kristhianjoke :D23:51
