rodrigoHello. I am having some problems with xubuntu (maybe just xfce, I am not sure what the issue is). After logging in, through lightdm, instead of loading xfce as normal all that appears is a blank blue screen andthe mouse cursor11:25
rodrigoI can-t even user ctrl-alt-f1 to get to a terminal. This happens every time I log in.11:26
diogenes_is it a fresh install or what?11:27
rodrigoWhat do you mean by fresh install'11:27
diogenes_a new install, when did you install xubuntu?11:27
rodrigoSome days, maybe a week ago.11:28
diogenes_and when did the problem appear:?11:31
rodrigoIt appeared some days after installing it. But, I was able to goa round the issue by hard resetting (holding the powerbutton) and, in lightdm going to the terminal tying rm /rf ~/.cache/sessions and them it would work; but now, it no longer works.11:36
diogenes_if it wasn't from the very beginning but appeared later, it means you have installed something or made a change that broke the login process11:38
rodrigoMaybe. What what could it be, any know programs?11:38
diogenes_just try to remember what changes you have done before you start facing this issue11:39
rodrigoI simply installed some programs, chrome, qbittorrent, grive, gummi, PyCharm, python3.6. I think that's about it.11:40
diogenes_was python in repositories or you compiled it?11:42
rodrigoIt was in the repositories.11:42
diogenes_do you have a separate /home folder?11:43
rodrigoNo, I have just one.11:43
rodrigoIt is all in the same partition. It is all mostly in the default state.11:44
diogenes_then you could try backup all .hiddelfolders and files from /home folder then remove all the configs and reboot, it should recreate the needed configs on startup, if doesn't work then reinstall, that's my opinion11:46
rodrigoHow would I go about backing up and removing all the configs?11:47
diogenes_you can create a folder home.old and copy paste all .folers and .files into that folder11:47
diogenes_then remove them from the priginal /home11:47
diogenes_then reboot11:47
diogenes_original*11:47
rodrigoCan I do that from the usb  while "trying xubuntu"? I cannot access the desktop in xubuntu.11:48
diogenes_yes you can do from usb live session11:48
rodrigoI don't seem to be able to acess the /home folder from the usb live session.11:51
diogenes_what does it show?11:51
rodrigoThe /home folder from the xubuntu installed on my SSD, that is.11:51
rodrigoIt does not appear in the file manager.11:51
diogenes_try looking in gparted11:52
rodrigoIt does appear in gparted.11:53
diogenes_righ click on it and see if there's mount option11:53
rodrigoNo, it is grayed out.11:54
diogenes_that's very strange try running in terminal: lsblk11:55
rodrigoI have done that.11:56
diogenes_what is the label of your ssd11:56
rodrigosda211:56
diogenes_now run: sudo mkdir /media/newhd11:57
rodrigoHave done that,11:57
diogenes_sudo mount /dev/sda2 /media/newhd11:57
rodrigoIt seems to have worked. let me confirm it.11:58
diogenes_thunar /media/newhd11:58
diogenes_run that11:58
rodrigoYep. Got the SSD mounted.11:58
rodrigoI can now access the home folder.11:59
diogenes_cool11:59
rodrigoWhere am I supposed to create the home.old folder?12:00
diogenes_in your /home/username/Documents for example12:01
rodrigoI don't have permission to edit anything there.12:02
diogenes_REMEMBER! you have to delete only hidden files that start with . (dot)12:02
diogenes_if you don't have permissions then run in terminal: gksu thunar /media/newhd12:02
rodrigoI don't have gksu installed, and don't seem to be able to isntall it.12:05
diogenes_ok then simply sudo thunar12:06
rodrigoYes, that works.12:06
rodrigoBut, I cannot create folder. Only acess the documents.12:08
diogenes_why you can't create the folder?12:09
rodrigoI don't know. I can't create anything there. simply copy and open files.12:09
diogenes_do you have a free usb drive?12:10
rodrigoI only have the one I'm using right now in the to run the usb live media.12:10
rodrigoI can upload the files to Google Drive, or something like that.12:11
diogenes_close any running terminal and any running thunar12:11
diogenes_and try once again in terminal: sudo thunar /media/newhd12:11
rodrigoIt works! You are a genius!12:12
diogenes_lol, I'm far from it12:13
rodrigoNow in this home.old folder, I put every .file and .folder.12:13
diogenes_yes12:13
diogenes_and don't touch folders which have no .(dot) in front12:14
rodrigoAre the files in those folders going to be removed?12:14
diogenes_in what folders?12:15
rodrigoThe ones with no dots.12:15
diogenes_no theya re not gonna be removed12:15
rodrigoOk. So, now I simply reboot and see if it works, right?12:15
diogenes_after you done copying all hidden files and folders you have to delete them from the original /home12:15
rodrigoYes, I've done that.12:16
diogenes_ok reboot and have your fingers crossed12:16
rodrigoI'll come back if the problem persists. If not, thank you, diogenes.12:16

RoadRunnerWant to update from Xubuntu 14.04 LTS to 16.04.2 LTS but the updater isn't letting me possibly due to problems with some of the installed software. Only a partial update is permited with all the "new" stuff only for 14.04.  How do I go around this?21:21

StevieWhi all. i'm looking for a terminal for xubuntu 17.04 which shows the line numbers like at this picture: http://www.unixmen.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/screenshot-2016-04-21_07-17-36.jpg ; can you suggest me one please? =)21:55
pavlushkaStevieW: that is a VI editor, not terminal :)21:58
pavlushkathe one with lines21:58
pavlushkanumbers21:59
StevieWpavlushka, i know that many editors have it, but i actually wanted a terminal with this feature. it can be an advantage sometimes21:59
StevieWjust at the left side of the home tree21:59
StevieWnot for copying, just showing21:59
StevieW(the numbers)22:00
pavlushkaStevieW: and that one I looks like some media player (terminal mode), the home tree22:01
StevieWyep, true =) i meant the right window, i know that this is also an editor. i meant the style of it which i wish for a terminal =)22:02
pavlushkaStevieW: me too22:04
StevieWgood luck :)22:05
pavlushkaStevieW: though you can view text and may pdfs with line numbers in terminal as "cat file.txt -n"22:09
StevieWok, another question. this here is an old version of the rxvt-unicode terminal: https://www.tecmint.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/rxvt-unicode.png ; if i install the new version for 17.04 (apt-get install rxvt-unicode) then it looks very different. and unfortunately it doesn't have any options which you could change. But this glowing text color of the old rxvt is AWESOME! Could you please help me to get exactly this color in any terminal where it's22:10
StevieWpossible? ;-)22:10
StevieWthanks pavlushka, i'll notice that22:10
pavlushkaStevieW: that png file is the original sample of rxvt or your installed rxvt preview?22:13
StevieWno, it's an old version of rxvt which i found online. the original which i just tried looks like the mate-terminal with white background.22:15
pavlushkaStevieW: "the original which i just tried looks like the mate-terminal with white background." after your install?22:16
StevieWyes, after my install22:19
* pavlushka already engaged his installer to install 0ad, some 15 minutes, lol22:25
pavlushkaStevieW: btw, I see the rxvt (not urxvt) here is actually with barebone look22:28
pavlushkaStevieW: here https://www.tecmint.com/linux-terminal-emulators/22:28
StevieWpavlushka, what is 0ad?22:29
pavlushkaStevieW: a real-time stratigc game22:29
StevieWok22:29
pavlushkaStevieW: when I launch rxvt-tabbed, it loads as white background with tab feature22:53
pavlushkaand there is "rxvt --help"22:53
pavlushkaStevieW: and for more help, there is #rxvt-unicode :)22:56
pavlushkachannel22:57
* pavlushka calling it a session :p22:57
