kenrinWhat model A8 do you have00:00
AginorFenix_Peregrino: possibly, but it depends on a bunch of stuff00:00
Fenix_PeregrinoAMD A8-7650K Radeon R700:00
Fenix_PeregrinoAginor: like what :)?00:01
AginorFenix_Peregrino: drivers, linux port quality of the games, ram, other hardware in the system00:01
kenrinYeah that CPU should be fine even by itself with no dedicated GPU at 60fps00:02
kenrinat medium settings anyway00:02
Fenix_PeregrinoAginor: I have good RAM and most or components are high quality. I just have problems in the processor part and graphic card.00:03
Fenix_Peregrinokenrin: perfect, the thing is I have it at best and shadows at ultra settings00:03
kenrinshadows is one of the things that kill FPS00:04
Fenix_Peregrinokenrin: lol00:05
Fenix_Peregrinokenrin: I was thinking getting this graphic card.Asus® Video AMD Radeon RX 470 4GB GDDR5 ROG Strix00:07
Fenix_Peregrinokenrin: will do the work?00:07
leftyfbFenix_Peregrino: at this point, you should take this discussion to #ubuntu-offtopic00:08
kenrinHonestly I think you'll still be limited by the CPU,  LoL isn't a GPU intensive game00:08
Fenix_Peregrinokenrin: is Dota2 a GPU intensive game?00:09
kenrinNope00:09
Fenix_Peregrinoleftyfb: ok :)00:09
Fenix_Peregrinokenrin: :(00:09
lxtemphi, does ubuntu pull in non-security updates from debian outside the 6-month release cycle?00:38
lxtemp(I'm finally moving from win to linux and trying to pick between debian testing and ubuntu (for desktop). I do have some linux experience but prefer when things work, but I also like to have current software)00:38
fallentreelxtemp: ubuntu does important bugfix and security fixes for the lifetime of a release. imho, ubuntu does it faster and better than debian.00:41
fallentreemeaning you'll see fixes in ubuntu sooner than in debian.00:41
fallentreegenerally.00:41
lxtempeven faster than debian testing?00:42
fallentreedepends but yes that's my experience00:42
fallentreelxtemp: note that debian testing is actually last to receive updates in debian. sid and stable/oldstable get first, testing later00:43
Fenix_Peregrinocan someone tell me how to see the CPU and GPU usage? what program or command should I use?00:43
fallentreesecurity fixes at least00:43
fallentreeFenix_Peregrino: "System Monitor" for some nice graphs, or top on command line. as for GPU, no idea except nvidia-settings for nvidia00:44
Fenix_Peregrinofallentree: thank you very much00:46
lxtempfallentree: thanks! do you know how bad the upgrades from one release to another are? in the past, I've always had some issues, and all the ubuntu systems I've used for a while were popping up crash warnings on login :(00:46
Fenix_Peregrinofallentree: !!!00:46
fallentreelxtemp: some swear they're fine, but that's not my experience, I always reinstall00:48
lxtempouch00:48
fallentreegiven the changes they do between releases, I'm not surprised00:50
fallentreeI can only fetch boxloads of popcorn for the 17.10 upbreakgrade :)00:51
lxtempfallentree, you mentioned ubuntu getting fixes faster - are we talking days or months here?00:55
fallentreedays to weeks. sometimes debian is faster, but generally not. but that's not the point. the point is in ubuntu SAUCE patches to the kernel that debian hasn't got, so security is better in ubuntu. plus apparmor is native. if you need to choose, go ubuntu.00:57
Bashing-omlxtemp: I have seen security patches done within minutes of the discovery in ubuntu .00:59
lxtempsigh. I guess I'll buy two stacks of keyboards. Try to get a working environment on debian, try to get a working environment on ubuntu, and try to maintain both across a release. the distro with the highest remaining stack of keyboards wins and stays, the other joins the keyboards broken in frustration on the way out ;)01:04
lxtempthanks for the help, I think I'll just try both out one more time!01:12
roothorickAm I seeing this right? 64bit and 32bit Qt development files cannot be installed simultaneously?01:19

sachinaI used dd to create a bootable pendrive and created a new partition on it for persistent storage but it is not saving data of session. What is the thing I am missing?01:55
=== downtime is now known as uptime
Random832sachina, i don't think you can do persistent storage if you use dd, you have to use a tool like usb-creator01:59
sachinaActually I followed a tutorial on linux dot com. DD was used to create bootable drive and gparted to create a new partition to store data.02:00
Random832well i don't know what instructions you followed... it looks like it is possible to do with a partition according to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LiveUsbPendrivePersistent but it has to have a volume label casper-rw02:01
Random832since i don't know what you did i don't know what you're missing02:01
sachinaI labled partition as live-rw. Is this what I am missing?02:02
Random832maybe i don't know02:02
sachinaok, let me try that..02:02
Random832the instructions i found say casper-rw02:02

schultzaHow do I make a live-usb with the drivers I need for nvidia graphics and network from another computer so that the one I want to boot will have both GUI and network access?03:33
Jordan_Uschultza: What happens when you try to boot the live-usb on the target computer now? If you at all can, it's easier to install drivers after installing Ubuntu.03:37
schultzaI'm not trying to install ubuntu on this machine. Im doing emergency rescue of windows drives before I restart windows on it. There is a partition that doesnt seem to be recognizing by windows nor linux/ubuntu with an NTFS or FAT FS.03:38

paulnoisegood morning all, i have an irritation/problem with volume control in ubuntu studio.  I was hoping someone could help with09:20
cristian_cChristW: it can look strange, but you can try to reinstall the all_deb -headers package and then remove it completely by your package manager09:20

cristian_cChristW: btw, you've not installed all the needed 4.12 packages, so it's normal it doesn't boot09:21
ChristWcristian_c: Ouch! Didn't know I didn't install everything@09:22

ChristWakik cristian_c I purged the 4.10.0-21 stuff and they are gone from the dpkg -l list now.09:24
ChristWcristian_c: I dpkg -i the _all.deb and then dpkg -l | grep linux showed the package. Then I ran sudo apt purge linux-headers-4.12.0-041200rc3. It removed it from the dpkg -l, but update-grub still finds the /boot/vmlinuz-4.12.0-041200rc3-generic image.09:25
ChristWInstall the other .debs I have as well to see if that helps? And purge them afterwards, of course :-)09:26

brez0I just ran some ssh checks on my box and noticed that speech-dispatcher is setup as an ssh acount, and I don't remember setting it up... Any suggestions? Have I been compromised?10:50
brez0or am I paranoid?10:50
brez0I have never even heard of speech-dispatcher10:50
\9brez0: there's no such thing as a 'ssh account', just accounts on your system. speech-dispatcher appears to be a sound utility thing on the system10:52
\9brez0: speech-dispatcher is a system account10:52
\9you can try your self: sudo su - speech-dispatcher, it does nothing10:52
\9brez0: these kinds of accounts exist so that system processes don't have to run as root and potentially screw up your system if bugs happen10:53

\9hmm, how did you scan it?10:55
\9what does `getent passwd speech-dispatcher` say? the last entry (the shell used) should be /bin/false10:56
tomreynit would be able to login if it had an ssh (public) authentication key and ssh key based authentication was enabled or if it had a password and password authentication was enabled.10:56
brez0How would I be able to find out if it has a pwd set? It def doesn't have a key as I would have had to set that myself, no?10:56
brez0Is there a default password for that?10:56
tomreyn(or if you had another sshd authentication mechanisms enabled which grats it access)10:56

Etothetauimy computer was working so nicely before13:28
cwarnerI have a bug to report I just want to see if anyone else can verify.. this is 14.04 but I suspect it affects other versions basically limits.conf is being ignored as configured for limits in a current session because the module isn't loaded by default as being optional or required. It's set for login by default but it should also really be turned on for the session13:30
corescan you renice a process before it starts running?13:31
cwarnercores, no13:31
corescwarner, how do i run a process with a lower priority from the moment of execution?13:32
cwarnercores, you should be able to nice a process when you start it13:32
coresoh, duh13:32
cwarnercores, so you'd just nice -n priority command13:32
coresthat makes sense13:32
luis30Etothetaui, if you use terminal to update you need to use all three commands...or just use gui..its so much easier..:P13:32
Etothetauiok, thanks13:33
luis30dunno why ubuntu requires three terminal commands for full upgrade but they do ..but you have the gui option13:33
Etothetauiany ideas for why my shift keys aren't working13:33
Etothetauibecause that my real probelm13:33
luis30Etothetaui, oh you have zesty sigh so do I ...I feel your pain lol13:34
Etothetauiluis are you having the same shift problems13:34
Etothetaui?13:34
oerhekshow does one type ? without shiftkey ..13:34
oerhekslolz13:34
leftyfbEtothetaui: try booting a live cd/usb and see if the problem persists13:34
luis30Etothetaui, have you look for a similar bug report on launchpad13:34
IchimusaiEtothetaui: Is the shift key not workin in console or graphical mode?13:35
Etothetauileftyfb thats a good idea, i'll try that when i get home13:35
max3is there a way to find out what time a file was written to disk instead of what time it was created13:35
leftyfbEtothetaui: I would also recommend trying a different live cd distro to see if it's an ubuntu problem at all13:35
EtothetauiIchimusai, i have the same problem regardless of if im using i3wm or gnome, and also when i use tty3 and tty413:35
coresmax3, there should be a modified time, no?13:35
Etothetauii think i have a fedora usb somewhere i can try13:36
coresmax3, try stat13:36
IchimusaiEtothetaui: So it's a bit of a deeper issue. Is it a laptop?13:36
EtothetauiIchimusai, yeah a laptop13:36
IchimusaiEtothetaui: Which model?13:36
max3cores, access, modify, change. what's the difference between modify and change?13:36
EtothetauiIchimusai, http://i.imgur.com/LoTcul9.png13:37
luis30Etothetaui, look at this and see if this is your problem... https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/168338313:37
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1683383 in xorg-server (Ubuntu) "Keyboard layout change on hotkeys press instead of release and do not work well with shortcuts (reopen)" [Undecided,Confirmed]13:37
SimonNLEtothetaui: check if something is stuck under the key.13:38
EtothetauiSimonNL, i am having the problem with both shift keys13:38
SimonNLEtothetaui: check both13:38
IchimusaiEtothetaui: Usual suspects are also sticky-key options an do a dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration if not already done so13:38
SimonNLit's just a few seconds13:38
Etothetauiluis30, it doesnt sound like that bug. shift acts weird by itself13:41
Etothetauiin xev13:41
luis30i c13:41
luis30interesting13:41
EtothetauiIchimusai, i tried dpkg-reconfigure that didn't do anything13:41
luis30there do seems to be various people complaining about keyboard combinations..13:41
coresmax3: without looking at any documentation, i believe access is the last time the file was opened, modify is the last time the file's content was changed and change is the last time the files metadata was changed13:42
coresi could be wrong about the modify and change though, i swap those sometimes13:43
max3what's more interesting is that birth is -13:43
coresmaybe you have a different stat than i do13:45
coresi have no idea what birth is13:45
coresmy stat man page is surprisingly unhelpful when it comes to defining what the differences between "change" and "modify" is13:45
coresthe touch(1) man page isn't great either.13:47
EtothetauiIchimusai, after i did dpkg-reconfigre it didn't fix my shift keys but it did make my comptuer switch between virtual consoles with super and arrow keys13:50
Etothetauiand alt and arrow keys13:50
Etothetauihow do i disable that13:50
Etothetauiomg that's annoying13:53
Etothetauinow i have two problems13:54

BluesKajannihilator,  yup good old stanbys FTW14:20
naccannihilator: ok, so when you are running the GUI thing, check if `ps aux | grep gnome` indicates it's gnome-software running or not14:20
naccannihilator: if, instead, you're using ubuntu software centre, its a known deprecated project (it's not even in zesty anymore, but if you were on an older version and never removed it, it might still be there)14:21

cmpscabralalso, prior to this error the installer is unable to detect and install the necessary network drivers - not sure if this is relevant14:58
hashwagonThanks, _KaszpiR_. Turns out my preceed install was including GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" in my /etc/default/grub... my manual installations do not have quiet and splash.15:05

uboneis ubuntu using debian packages15:14
Amethisthi15:15
boredguyAnyone have any suggestions for setting up a compression proxy on a ubuntu server?15:15
Amethistwhy is ubuntu copy file so much slowler than windows15:15
boredguyMaybe its single threaded?15:17
Amethistboredguy:  how do i know that?15:19
PiciAmethist: why do you think its slower?15:19
Amethistit goes 700kb/s and when it says 1 second remaining it actually takes 5 min15:20
AmethistPici:15:20
naccubone: ubuntu is based on debian, yes.15:20
Amethisti use nautilus btw15:21
ubonebut do they use debian packages or build on their own? i see ubuntu syncs with debian every few months. how does it work?15:22
ubonetry cp file location15:23
Amethistubone:  ok  , thanks15:24
boredguyAre you trying to copy a single file or thousands?15:25
Amethistboredguy: dozens15:26
naccubone: both cases exist15:26
\9boredguy: multi-threaded copying wouldn't help if I/O is the bottleneck and it usually is15:27

Amethistboredguy:  the disk my OS is in is SSD15:28
bozzaI thought ubuntu has abandoned IRC?15:30
naccbozza: I don't know what that even means (ubuntu is a distribution). But no, ubuntu development and users still use IRC15:31
bozza I mean #ubuntu chan on irc15:31
bozzanacc: I read that some popular distro went with slack over irc15:31
tgm4883bozza: still not sure what that is supposed to mean, also OT for this channel15:31
bozzatgm4883:  I read that some popular distro went with slack over irc15:31
tgm4883bozza: "some popular"15:32
naccbozza: your statement now reads (to me): "i thought the ubuntu irc channel abandoned irc" :)15:32
bozzatgm4883: it was a news article I read a while ago.. can't remember which distro they wrote about.. I thought it may have been ubuntu15:32
\9boredguy: i'm reading on the subject and it doesn't seem it helps with SSDs either15:32
bozzabut I kinda feel like they are/were misinformed15:32
tgm4883bozza: let me save you some time. Read the topic. Seems like if it still says this is the official irc channel and not a link to slack that you may be misinformed15:33
\9boredguy: with hard drives the head of course becomes the bottleneck, but the kernel also caches things. so multithreading doesn't really help much15:33
bozzatgm4883: I am citing some web news article ...15:33
naccbozza: you are not "citing" anything15:34
tgm4883bozza: no you aren't15:34
naccbozza: you are saying you read something somewhere sometime15:34
tgm4883nacc: +115:34
Amethisthmm15:34
bozzanacc: precisely15:34
naccbozza: which isn't citing. please stop15:34
tgm4883bozza: that's not citing anything. Citing something would be providing a link. In any case, it's obviously wrong (or 1351 people that are here are wrong) and is off topic for this channel15:35
Amethistllol15:35
bozzatgm4883: exactly15:35
bozzaa different word is more appropriate15:35
tgm4883troll?15:35
Amethistif i use nemo it would be faster_?15:35
bozzatgm4883: huh?15:36
bozzano!15:36
tgm4883bozza: sorry, I thought you wanted to know the word that was more appropriate15:36
bozzatgm4883: at the moment I am googling to see if some popular distro abandoned freenode for slack15:37
bozzabut I highly suspect the article got something wrong15:37
Southern_Gentlemor your understanding15:37
tgm4883bozza: ok good. If you do find that it's ubuntu, please take it to #ubuntu-discuss as it's off topic for this channel. If it's not ubuntu and you still want to talk about it take it to #ubuntu-offtopic15:38
bozzawell I am here now tgm4883. Am I not? :)15:38
tgm4883bozza: you are in the support channel, and that is most definitely not a support question15:38
Amethistlol , i cant restart nautilus by "nautilus -q"15:39
Amethiston terminal15:39
naccAmethist: nautilus -q 'quit' nautilus. it doesn't restart it15:39
Amethisthmm15:39
Amethistnvmind , i'll restart the OS15:40
Amethistbrb15:40
ubonehow outdated are packages on avarage?15:42
naccubone: depends on the package. in the current release, we try to match debian15:42
\9also depends on your definition of "outdated". ubuntu maintains packages with support patches15:43
\9which is how LTS releases work15:43
nacc\9: true15:43
uboneany update on 32bit support? iafai see there's still install images coming out15:44
\932bit support still exists yes15:44
ubonewasnt steam 32bit only?15:44
\9i don't know off hand. but, 64bit systems can run 32bit binaries, so even if steam was 32bit only it wouldn't really matter15:45
akikubone: it was 18.04 that will drop the 32-bit installation images15:46

hovisI just installed Ubuntu Gnome 16.04.2 and I'm having some trouble with my multimedia keys, and I'm not finding a lot of help with Google.  When I use `xdotool key XF86AudioPlay` (for example) a big verboten sign flashes but my media player doesn't play or pause.  Can I get some tips on how to search for this?17:34
hovis(I get identical behavior when I use the real media key, I just wanted to rule out a keybinding issue)17:34
black_vegetableHey, I am temporarily wanting to disable apt unattended-upgrades. Would this be accomplished by deleting the file /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/20auto-upgrades ?17:37
black_vegetableOr would that cause the sky to burn and the moon to turn to blood?17:37
black_vegetable(Ubuntu 16.04)17:37
karvasI have another related question: If I choose to reinstall my system, what do I need to backup to be able to encrypt my home folder later? (ecryptfs, /home on different partition) or is it better (safer) to make a complete backup of my disk with dd ?17:38
karvas*decrypt17:39
rohan_flag0Do you have the keys?17:39
karvasno, I do just have my user login and passphrase17:40
tomreynblack_vegetable: you could do what you suggested, or set "APT::Periodic::Unattended-Upgrade "0";" in this file, or, maybe the easiest option, sudo apt remove unattended-upgrades17:40
karvasI tried to get the keys using a live cd but it didnt work17:40
black_vegetableOk. Thank you tomreyn.17:41
karvasoh no - I do the key17:42
tomreynkarvas: how do you backup?17:43
rohan_flag0You need the mount passphrase to be able to remount the Disk.17:43
rohan_flag0It was a string displayed when you first setup encryption17:44
karvasyes, i think I found this string and I will try to decrypt it17:45
karvastomreyn: i mean copying the files over to a save location like an external harddrive or network storage17:47
rohan_flag0Use `sudo ecryptfs-add-passphrase --fnek` and insert your passphrase. Leave everything else default17:50
tomreynkarvas: if you'll have your logged in user do it the source files won't be encrypted. if you'll have root or another administrative user do it you'll need to somehow store the encryption passphrase, too (or just rememberit).17:50
karvasI tried to use ecryptfs-recover-private, and it accepted my passphrase (''Success...') and mounted the folder somewhere - but all the files are still encrypted17:53
rohan_flag0Sudo mount -t ecryptfs /Dev/X /home/me17:54
rohan_flag0Try this17:54
karvasok17:54
rohan_flag0Ofcourse the dev/x is your partition and last one is Destination17:55
rohan_flag0I'm not 100% sure about this command. But I guess this should be it.17:55
rohan_flag0Also i guess you need to mount the .Private directory17:56
tomreynhttps://askubuntu.com/questions/93975/recovering-ecryptfs-partition-with-ecryptfs-recover-private-not-working17:57
robodephi all17:59
rohan_flag0Use find / -iname '.Private' -type d 2>/dev/null18:00
rohan_flag0Ofcourse with sudo18:00

cp5i6xyea that's set up properly, eth0 is 192.168.100.10 and eth1 is 192.168.100.1118:42
scottjlso then just ping each address?18:42
cp5i6xthe routing isnt set up properly so eth0 doesnt see eth1 when connected to a patch cable18:43
scottjlyou're saying you're plugging eth0 into eth1?18:44

SimonNLhuh18:44
SimonNLwhat's that for18:45
scottjlif you try ping on the box that has the nics you're not going to get routed out the interface18:45
cp5i6xi know i'm not18:45
cp5i6xi just need the box to be able to ping from one interface to the other18:45
scottjlok. not at all understanding what you're trying to do18:45
tgm4883cp5i6x: what problem are you trying to solve?18:46
scottjlyou're not going to.18:46
cp5i6xping -I eth0 192.168.100.1118:46
leftyfbcp5i6x: both ip's are the same network. There's no need for a route. If they're on the same machine and you're logged into the machine, they will ping eachother without a problem18:46
leftyfbdon't use -I18:46
scottjlsounds like he's trying to force a packet out the interface.18:46
cp5i6xexactly18:46
scottjlit's not going to do it18:46
tgm4883but why?18:46
scottjlbecause the other nic is already present in the box18:47
leftyfbcp5i6x: why do you think you need this to work?18:47
cp5i6xlatency testing between network cards18:47
tgm4883scottjl: sorry, let me clarify. Why are we trying to ping one nic to another nic on the same box18:47
scottjltgm4883: yes. i figured that out18:47
tgm4883scottjl: sorry, that you had directed that at me18:48
scottjlafaik it won't send out a packet since the other address is already present on the server18:48
leftyfbcp5i6x: there is zero latency because they are on the same box. They will not be seen as external devices to test latency across18:48
cp5i6xthat is incorrect18:48
cp5i6xthere is a latency going out from one network card, through a patch cable into the other network card18:48
scottjlthe routing tables already see both addresses as direct18:49
tgm4883I don't think I'm following how that is going to give you any stats on latency18:49
leftyfbcp5i6x: no, traffic does not go out and back in18:49
cp5i6xthat's why i'm asking how to set up the ip tables18:49
leftyfbcp5i6x: it will always go direct18:49
leftyfbyou don't18:49
scottjlyou're trying to trick it18:49
scottjlafaik you can't18:49
scottjlthen again i never tried to do that. lol.18:50
cp5i6xyou can18:50
cp5i6xi forgot the exact syntax18:50
leftyfbyou can't ... you would have to block direct/local access to a NIC18:50
cp5i6xso now i'm trying to ask18:50
SimonNL#networking  maybe better place for it.18:50
cp5i6xSimonNL: thanks for the suggest18:50
Slartso, imapfilter segfaults on ubuntu 16.04 and has done so since.. 5 months? I figured going with an LTS release I wouldn't have to mess with manual fixes for things like this.. it was fixed in december upstream but nothing so far in the ubuntu release.19:02
naccSlart: is there a bug filed with ubuntu?19:02

naccSlart: looking19:02
naccSlart: looks to be fixed in 2.6.10 upstream, which is in 17.04+. Will look at the SRU today19:04
SlartI really would rather stay on the LTS releases.. but yea, I saw they had a newer version on later ubuntu versions19:05
naccSlart: understood, just letting you know19:05
Slartbut isn't this why we do backports of things.. if imapfilter now has some weird dependency19:05
naccSlart: backports?19:05
SlartI guess I just needed to vent a little19:06
naccSlart: no, this is not a backport, it's a bugfix19:06
naccSlart: the version *upstream* was broken when 16.04 came out19:06
naccSlart: should it have been caught by us? yes :) but not every package has full coverage (or any) in tests19:06
Slartah.. perhaps I should move away from imapfilter altogether19:06
naccSlart: i will sru the fix back to 16.0419:06

dckxhi guys, I've been trying to setup my touchpad for a while with no success. When I slide my finger on the touchpad, the cursor does not move until my finger has traveled a certain distance, and then starts moving. It is not a sensitivity issue, because the touchpad is very responsive once the cursor starts moving. It seems to be a "protection" so the cursor doesn't move if I accidentally lay my hsven't finger on the touchpad, or maybe while20:14

fishbowlkrakenAlright, I've taken a break from my stupid driver issues for about a week, but the models I'm working on are getting to the point where I really need my GPU running on all cylinders, so here I am again.22:20
akikprocess io with iotop22:20
fishbowlkrakenSo, I'm having an issue where my Nvidia M2200 isn't able to reclock itself above about 10% speed regardless of settings or drivers loaded. I've tried using the proposed kernels, I'm running the latest drivers from the gpu-drivers PPA, but nothing works.22:22
fishbowlkrakenIt simply will not reclock. And it only even loads the card correctly if Prime is disabled in BIOS, otherwise it runs from the Intel Iris card almost exclusively, and still won't aggressively clock the card higher when I need it.22:23
fishbowlkrakenIf I enable Prime, the Iris graphics sorta work, but while the Nvidia clock seems to bounce around a bit, it doesn't actually improve graphical performance. I'm not the only person encountering the problem, either. Here's a post on the Nvidia forums from other users with the same issue, and a list22:24
fishbowlkrakenof the things they've tried to get their machines running.22:24

fishbowlkrakenThe part that drives me nuts is reclocking worked exactly once.22:24
fishbowlkraken I don't know what happened, but I installed the OS, installed the latest graphics drivers, and it ran a single game I used as a benchmark flawlessly for about an hour.22:25
fishbowlkrakenI ran the updater, shut it off, went to bed, and in the morning, nothing. Stuck at barely functional.22:26
akikfishbowlkraken: can you boot windows on it to test if it works there?22:27
fishbowlkrakenI don't have Windows installed, nor do I use it. Others have confirmed the card works in Windows, but that's not my operating environment.22:27
akikfishbowlkraken: there are a lot of options that you can set it a xorg config snippet22:28
fishbowlkrakenI22:28
akikfishbowlkraken: nvidia specific. but i would guess the nvidia dev talk forum is the best forum this time22:29
fishbowlkrakenoops. I've tried using Nvidia-SMI to allow clockspeed adjusting, and it's not done anything.22:29
fishbowlkrakenYes, I linked an Nvidia forum page about this issue.22:29
fishbowlkraken So as far as the Nvidia Dev forum is concerned, there's already a post about it where they've tried a number of things.22:31
akikfishbowlkraken: if you search for xorg.conf and RegistryDwords, you'll find the nvidia options i think22:31
fishbowlkrakenAs in a Xorg.conf file? I don't have one, Ubuntu doesn't have one by default.22:32
akikfishbowlkraken: yes but if you create one, it'll be used (/etc/X11/xorg.conf)22:34
fishbowlkrakenOkay, so how do I format a xorg.conf to allow reclocking in this scenario? I've not had to use a Xorg.conf for like, five years so I'm not exactly well versed on how it works.22:35
akikfishbowlkraken: i'm not sure of the options you need but you can also put one section only in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf (doesn't need to be the whole config)22:36
fishbowlkrakenAnd setting this will enable the setting that the Nvidia SMI tool tells me is unavailable to me?22:38
akikfishbowlkraken: for example that file could only have Section "Device"22:38
akikfishbowlkraken: no i don't know which options you need, just how you can create the xorg config snippet22:38
fishbowlkrakenThere's already an output class config for Nvidia in conf.d, by the way. The problem, though, is I'm looking for answers on what setting I need to enable to make the clockspeed adjust itself22:39
fishbowlkrakenso it's great that a xorg.conf snippet would fix it if I put the setting that'd fix it in there, but I have no idea what that setting is, which is why I'm here.22:39
fishbowlkrakenAlright, gonna try another fix option someone mentioned.22:45
Melioratorhi all, i need some help getting ubuntu to boot from a hdd on an older intel motherboard, BIOS just gives me "insert boot disk"22:53
Melioratori have tried setting the bootable flag on the nested partition, but still doesn't boot22:54
Melioratorapparently it's an issue with older intel motherboards and "buggy" BIOS's, but the workarounds i found, don't seem to work22:55
Ben64seems likely that the drive isn't bootable22:55
YankDownUnderMeliorator, Does that particular BIOS give you the option to choose a boot device when it gets past the POST?22:55
MelioratorBen64: windows boots from the drives ok22:56
Ben64that doesn't mean anything22:56
MelioratorYankDownUnder: yes, both devices with grub are installed, are the only devices allowed to boot22:56
MelioratorBen64: it means there is a way to make them boot!22:57
YankDownUnderMeliorator, So you can get to "Win" through grub?22:57
Ben64it means you don't have it set up properly to boot now22:58
MelioratorYankDownUnder: No, i just did a plain windows install and let it use a whole disk22:58
MelioratorBen64: the BIOS config has not changed22:59
YankDownUnderMeliorator, So an MBR based partition boots fine.22:59
Ben64Meliorator: that doesn't matter either22:59
Ben64you need to have something on the drive that can boot for it to boot22:59
MelioratorYankDownUnder, seems so23:00
MelioratorBen64: so what is missing?23:00
Ben64an operating system, a bootloader, something like that23:00
MelioratorBen64: grub/linux?23:00
=== jrib1 is now known as jrib
archpchow's the support for a 980Ti?23:28
Ben64archpc: good23:30
=== zwischenzug2 is now known as zwischenzug
Bashing-omarchpc: mvidia recommends the 375 version driver : http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/118290/en-us , It is in our repo for later OSs .23:39
Melioratorok, so, i have run through Boot-Repair, but it still won't boot :(23:48
Meliorator...the log of which is here: https://pastebin.com/raw/W3EyPmHa23:50
