LangjanGood morning all07:57
Langjan my laptop (Lubuntu) cannot "see" my Huawei Vodafone dongle. I have reinstalled modem manager and usb modeswitch, the dongle shows blue but there seems to be a blockage. Any suggestions, please?  08:26
bushtech_Langjan: have you tried it on different usb ports on your lappie?09:48
bushtech_do the commands df and lsdb show anything interesting?09:51
CraigZimdf09:52
LangjanHi bushtech_its now in a different usb port. df shows quite a lot but I dont see anything (in my ignorance) that seems to indicate a problem. lsdb is "command not found" 10:09
LangjanIt's connected on wifi, which in turn will not deactivate so I force-deactivate it by changing settings to see if the mobile will connect10:10
bushtech_do you recognise your drives under df?. We're trying to find something new there which would be the dongle10:13
bushtech_unplug dongle and run df. make note of whats there. Then plug dongle in and see if something new appears10:14
Langjanok will do thks bushtech_ 10:14
bushtech_thats the dongle. Then at least we know what its called10:14
Langjanbushtech_,  nothing more shows up10:19
LangjanDongle lights up to blue but is not picked up10:19
bushtech_hmm strange10:20
bushtech_anybody who can help here?10:21
LangjanWhat's strange also is it used to work, I cannot say why and exactly when it started playing up10:21
bushtech_try df -Th10:22
Langjandf -Th nothing more10:23
bushtech_what is there?10:24
Langjansame uotput as in just df10:24
bushtech_can you list them, maybe just the /dev ones10:25
Langjanudev and sda/1  10:27
Langjanfour more show "none"10:27
bushtech_/sda/1is prob your hard drive10:28
Langjanyes10:29
bushtech_ok leave terminal and click on disks in desktop10:29
bushtech_see if it's there10:30
LangjanYes it shows dev/sr1 (read only)10:31
Langjanbut under CD drive10:32
bushtech_?10:33
bushtech_does /sr1 size correspond to the size of your HDD?10:33
LangjanCD Drive dev/sr110:33
Langjanno HDD is dev sda110:34
LangjanThis one shows huwaei 34 MB10:34
bushtech_ok so is /dev/SR1 tour dongle?10:34
Langjanyes10:34
bushtech_right progress :)10:35
LangjanGood!10:36
bushtech_Try This: sudo mount -o rw /dev/sr1 /mnt10:38
Langjanok10:39
Langjanblock device dev/sr1 is write-protected, mounting read-only10:41
bushtech_Ok so it is mounted10:42
bushtech_sowhat o you want to do, connect?10:42
Langjanmounted at filesystem/root10:42
Langjanyes10:42
LangjanCurrently connected on my wifi10:44
LangjanI wantt o be able to connect on dongle when away from wifi10:44
bushtech_Have you installed  Vodafone Mobile broadband software 10:45
LangjanWell it worked on this sytem until recently and nothing that I am aware of has changed except that it does not connect now10:46
bushtech_maybe reinstall the software or update it10:46
Langjanok will try, is that software from vodacom website or available from repos?10:47
bushtech_would think voda10:49
Langjanok thks bushtech_ will have a go10:49
jan_hi bushtech_ I found nothing for Linux at Vodacom, then found software for Vodacom via Synaptic, installed nut no luck. Am now trying to see if I can update the dongle software via Windows. 11:17
Langjanbushtech_, I upgraded the Huawei dongle firmware via Win 7, then rebooted, deleted the old mobile connection, created a new connection but still no luck. 12:08
bushtech_running out of ideas12:44
bushtech_maybe try running it through wine12:44
MaNIwhat does dmesg say when you plug it in?13:06
LangjanHi MaNI - dmesg?14:08
LangjanSorry you lost me there14:08
LangjanI am contemplating a fresh install... 14:10
Langjanbushtech_, wine is not an option for me, I have nightmarish memories of wine - the point is, it did run on the existing system so either there is something wrong with the dongle or the OS14:11
bushtech_type dmesg in command line14:13
LangjanRefers to a firmware bug14:16
Langjanthen OSC failed (AE not found); disabling ASPM14:18
LangjanSystem wakeup disabled by ACPI14:19
Langjanmentions some conflicts14:20
bushtech_bokant my vuurmaakplek14:24
bushtech_MaNi14:24
LangjanVery long output, ends with "perf interrupt took too long (2526 > 2500), lowering kernel.perf_event_max_sample_rate to 50000 14:26
paddatrapperLangjan: try unplug then run sudo dmesg -w and plug it back in14:32
paddatrapperThat will follow the output and you can see what pops up when you plug it in 14:32
Langjanok paddatrapper 14:33
Langjanpaddatrapper, same popup as before, disconnected, you are now offline14:36
Langjanfeedback on dmesg -w was: invalid option --'w'14:38
paddatrapperLangjan: I'm not at a pc currently, but you're looking for the flag to follow the output 15:00
Langjanpaddatrapper, the only output was "invalid option --'w' " - was that command correct?15:16
bushtech_dmesg -w not a valid command15:21
inetprowhat version of Ubuntu is that?15:26
LangjanHi inetpro it's Lubuntu 14.0415:26
inetprogoeie middag almal15:26
inetproyep, that version didn't have the -w option yet15:27
Langjanso do I just do dmesg?15:28
inetproLangjan: do the following and then insert and or remove and see what happens15:28
inetprotail -f /var/log/syslog15:28
Langjanis that the full command starting with ""tail"?15:29
inetproyep15:29
Langjanok thks15:29
Langjanwith dongle disconnected?15:29
inetproeither way15:30
Langjanok15:30
inetproyou should see stuff as you insert or remove15:30
inetproand when you have seen what you needed to see you press ctrl+c to stop following the output of that logfile15:31
Langjanhost name not found:ntp.ubuntu.com15:31
inetprothat's not relevant15:32
inetproif that doesn't help try this15:34
inetprotail -f /var/log/dmesg15:34
Langjanok15:34
inetproevery time you remove or insert a device you should see some output there15:35
Langjaninetpro, theres quite a long output but Greek to me, what should I be looking for? 15:36
inetpropaste at https://bin.snyman.info/15:37
Langjanok thks 15:37
LangjanI just have top transfer to my desktop 15:39
inetpro??15:39
inetprowhat does that mean?15:39
Langjanlaptop not currently online15:39
inetproah lol, top with the p :-)15:40
Langjanits the laptop problem and I have disconnected the other connections while trying to get this one going  15:40
inetproor without the p15:40
Langjanaye15:40
Langjangoeie begryper, dubbele woord...lmga! Sorry15:41
* inetpro failing to read between the lines15:41
inetproLangjan: you could also just type some info per line and google for it15:42
Langjanhttps://bin.snyman.info/mmm4w5t515:43
inetproshould find lots of similar output online and then you just go down the rabbit hole to find others with similar issues15:44
inetprohmm...15:44
inetpronone of that seems relevant either15:45
inetproor is it? I don't know now15:45
LangjanThat dongle was running well for a long time, strange...15:46
inetprothose lines get triggered when you remove or insert?15:46
inetprohave you tried multiple removes and inserts?15:46
LangjanIt was removed15:46
Langjanwell not specifically, but have removed and insetrted many times, nothing shows15:47
inetprodo it while you look at that output and then see the pattern when you do it15:47
inetprogive a few seconds each time you insert or remove15:48
inetpros/give/wait/15:48
Langjannothing15:48
inetproai!15:49
Langjanwaited until the light went blue 15:49
LangjanLubuntu OS problem?15:50
* inetpro suspecting you must have blacklisted the device with all the troubleshooting... but can't be sure about that15:50
LangjanFresh install is easy, theres not much on that machine15:51
inetproI bet it will work on a fresh install15:51
LangjanYou confirm my feelings...15:51
LangjanI had a simultaneous problem with wifi which I eventually sorted out 15:52
LangjanOK not serious, I will do a fresh next week and let you know what happens15:53
LangjanMany thanks guys15:53
inetproyou're welcome15:54
inetpromaybe someone will have better advice until then15:54
LangjanOK thks, enjoy the rest of the weekend15:55
inetprosame there, thanks15:55
Langjanthks inetpro 15:55
inetprojust close that fridge door of yours for me please15:55

LangjanNot too bad here, was 8° this morn and lekker sunny Bushveld day15:58
bushtech_can't the lappie run straight ubuntu?16:00
