[07:57] Good morning all [08:26] my laptop (Lubuntu) cannot "see" my Huawei Vodafone dongle. I have reinstalled modem manager and usb modeswitch, the dongle shows blue but there seems to be a blockage. Any suggestions, please? [09:48] Langjan: have you tried it on different usb ports on your lappie? [09:51] do the commands df and lsdb show anything interesting? [09:52] df [10:09] Hi bushtech_its now in a different usb port. df shows quite a lot but I dont see anything (in my ignorance) that seems to indicate a problem. lsdb is "command not found" [10:10] It's connected on wifi, which in turn will not deactivate so I force-deactivate it by changing settings to see if the mobile will connect [10:13] do you recognise your drives under df?. We're trying to find something new there which would be the dongle [10:14] unplug dongle and run df. make note of whats there. Then plug dongle in and see if something new appears [10:14] ok will do thks bushtech_ [10:14] thats the dongle. Then at least we know what its called [10:19] bushtech_, nothing more shows up [10:19] Dongle lights up to blue but is not picked up [10:20] hmm strange [10:21] anybody who can help here? [10:21] What's strange also is it used to work, I cannot say why and exactly when it started playing up [10:22] try df -Th [10:23] df -Th nothing more [10:24] what is there? [10:24] same uotput as in just df [10:25] can you list them, maybe just the /dev ones [10:27] udev and sda/1 [10:27] four more show "none" [10:28] /sda/1is prob your hard drive [10:29] yes [10:29] ok leave terminal and click on disks in desktop [10:30] see if it's there [10:31] Yes it shows dev/sr1 (read only) [10:32] but under CD drive [10:33] ? [10:33] does /sr1 size correspond to the size of your HDD? [10:33] CD Drive dev/sr1 [10:34] no HDD is dev sda1 [10:34] This one shows huwaei 34 MB [10:34] ok so is /dev/SR1 tour dongle? [10:34] yes [10:35] right progress :) [10:36] Good! [10:38] Try This: sudo mount -o rw /dev/sr1 /mnt [10:39] ok [10:41] block device dev/sr1 is write-protected, mounting read-only [10:42] Ok so it is mounted [10:42] sowhat o you want to do, connect? [10:42] mounted at filesystem/root [10:42] yes [10:44] Currently connected on my wifi [10:44] I wantt o be able to connect on dongle when away from wifi [10:45] Have you installed Vodafone Mobile broadband software [10:46] Well it worked on this sytem until recently and nothing that I am aware of has changed except that it does not connect now [10:46] maybe reinstall the software or update it [10:47] ok will try, is that software from vodacom website or available from repos? [10:49] would think voda [10:49] ok thks bushtech_ will have a go [11:17] hi bushtech_ I found nothing for Linux at Vodacom, then found software for Vodacom via Synaptic, installed nut no luck. Am now trying to see if I can update the dongle software via Windows. [12:08] bushtech_, I upgraded the Huawei dongle firmware via Win 7, then rebooted, deleted the old mobile connection, created a new connection but still no luck. [12:44] running out of ideas [12:44] maybe try running it through wine [13:06] what does dmesg say when you plug it in? [14:08] Hi MaNI - dmesg? [14:08] Sorry you lost me there [14:10] I am contemplating a fresh install... [14:11] bushtech_, wine is not an option for me, I have nightmarish memories of wine - the point is, it did run on the existing system so either there is something wrong with the dongle or the OS [14:13] type dmesg in command line [14:16] Refers to a firmware bug [14:18] then OSC failed (AE not found); disabling ASPM [14:19] System wakeup disabled by ACPI [14:20] mentions some conflicts [14:24] bokant my vuurmaakplek [14:24] MaNi [14:26] Very long output, ends with "perf interrupt took too long (2526 > 2500), lowering kernel.perf_event_max_sample_rate to 50000 [14:32] Langjan: try unplug then run sudo dmesg -w and plug it back in [14:32] That will follow the output and you can see what pops up when you plug it in [14:33] ok paddatrapper [14:36] paddatrapper, same popup as before, disconnected, you are now offline [14:38] feedback on dmesg -w was: invalid option --'w' [15:00] Langjan: I'm not at a pc currently, but you're looking for the flag to follow the output [15:16] paddatrapper, the only output was "invalid option --'w' " - was that command correct? [15:21] dmesg -w not a valid command [15:26] what version of Ubuntu is that? [15:26] Hi inetpro it's Lubuntu 14.04 [15:26] goeie middag almal [15:27] yep, that version didn't have the -w option yet [15:28] so do I just do dmesg? [15:28] Langjan: do the following and then insert and or remove and see what happens [15:28] tail -f /var/log/syslog [15:29] is that the full command starting with ""tail"? [15:29] yep [15:29] ok thks [15:29] with dongle disconnected? [15:30] either way [15:30] ok [15:30] you should see stuff as you insert or remove [15:31] and when you have seen what you needed to see you press ctrl+c to stop following the output of that logfile [15:31] host name not found:ntp.ubuntu.com [15:32] that's not relevant [15:34] if that doesn't help try this [15:34] tail -f /var/log/dmesg [15:34] ok [15:35] every time you remove or insert a device you should see some output there [15:36] inetpro, theres quite a long output but Greek to me, what should I be looking for? [15:37] paste at https://bin.snyman.info/ [15:37] ok thks [15:39] I just have top transfer to my desktop [15:39] ?? [15:39] what does that mean? [15:39] laptop not currently online [15:40] ah lol, top with the p :-) [15:40] its the laptop problem and I have disconnected the other connections while trying to get this one going [15:40] or without the p [15:40] aye [15:41] goeie begryper, dubbele woord...lmga! Sorry [15:41] * inetpro failing to read between the lines [15:42] Langjan: you could also just type some info per line and google for it [15:43] https://bin.snyman.info/mmm4w5t5 [15:44] should find lots of similar output online and then you just go down the rabbit hole to find others with similar issues [15:44] hmm... [15:45] none of that seems relevant either [15:45] or is it? I don't know now [15:46] That dongle was running well for a long time, strange... [15:46] those lines get triggered when you remove or insert? [15:46] have you tried multiple removes and inserts? [15:46] It was removed [15:47] well not specifically, but have removed and insetrted many times, nothing shows [15:47] do it while you look at that output and then see the pattern when you do it [15:48] give a few seconds each time you insert or remove [15:48] s/give/wait/ [15:48] nothing [15:49] ai! [15:49] waited until the light went blue [15:50] Lubuntu OS problem? [15:50] * inetpro suspecting you must have blacklisted the device with all the troubleshooting... but can't be sure about that [15:51] Fresh install is easy, theres not much on that machine [15:51] I bet it will work on a fresh install [15:51] You confirm my feelings... [15:52] I had a simultaneous problem with wifi which I eventually sorted out [15:53] OK not serious, I will do a fresh next week and let you know what happens [15:53] Many thanks guys [15:54] you're welcome [15:54] maybe someone will have better advice until then [15:55] OK thks, enjoy the rest of the weekend [15:55] same there, thanks [15:55] thks inetpro [15:55] just close that fridge door of yours for me please [15:58] Lmga! I'm on the other side - you must close yours thats where its coming from! [15:58] Not too bad here, was 8° this morn and lekker sunny Bushveld day [16:00] can't the lappie run straight ubuntu? [16:02] It can bushtech_ but its frustratingly slow [16:02] perhaps I must try gnome instead of unity?
