[05:52] G'morning all, anybody been in touch with kilos? [07:12] good mornings everyone [07:30] morning all and sundry [08:45] morning all === MaNL is now known as MaNI [10:13] Afternoon peeps o/ [10:19] Hello good day [10:29] anybody here that could help a non-computer wizz with ubuntu problem [10:30] what is your prob qwebirc72896 [10:30] explain the problem and be patient till someone gets a chance to help you [10:31] hi andrewlsd [10:33] morning peoples [10:33] maaz: seen cryterion [10:33] thatgraemeguy: cryterion was last seen 1 month, 17 days, 15 hours, 44 minutes and 3 seconds ago in #ubuntu-za on freenode [2017-04-25 20:49:23 SAST], and has been offline on freenode since 2017-04-26 12:17:47 SAST [10:33] hi thatgraemeguy [10:38] Hi Kilos, thanks [10:38] you welcome [10:39] My wifi... it's just not working now at all..I'm at the end my tether [10:39] you can also get an irc client and hang here full time like most of us [10:39] I've tried every googled solution offered: re-installing the realtek driver; reconfiguring, cloning...alles [10:40] qwebirc72896: "not working now at all" < was it working before? and... what has changed since then (e.g running updates) [10:40] what release of ubuntu are you using [10:40] it was working before... just put it on the other day...and gone, nothing [10:40] I restarted the network manager...nothing [10:40] I'm on ubuntu 16 [10:41] hmm. network-manager not likely to help if the hardware isn't actually detected/enabled. [10:41] ... where detected & enabled requires a kernel module and firmware to be loaded [10:41] I'm an Ubuntu user for the past 9 years...this is my first ever fatal problem I've had that's really debilitating [10:41] "kernel module and firmware" roughly equates to "driver" in windows speak [10:42] Anybody in the CapeTown area I could just take this to.....I'm like sudo-ed out [10:42] short term workarounds (albeit not ideal) that I have used include buying a tiny USB wireless-N dongle. Any of the ones supported by Raspberry Pi's would work [10:43] qwebirc72896: North or South CT area? [10:43] uuuhh..no man, why should I buy anything...this must be sorted out...Ubuntu is forever [10:43] anywhere...I don't care...need to get this fixed [10:43] because those dongles cost about R99, which is worth less than the time you've spent or will spend to get this fixed [10:44] I'm in the Northern Suburbs. [10:44] yes... fine [10:44] and you could work on this....? [10:45] yes. there are some others in the south, which is why I asked. [10:45] ah I see...now, I'm pretty much in the middle...Heideveld...so either way works for me [10:45] ... problem is likely to be tied to a kernel upgrade that may have happened. [10:46] ... since it showed itself after a reboot/shutdown. [10:46] I saw that in one of my googled solution... looked up what kernal...I'm on 4 something === Kilos- is now known as Kilos [10:47] If you want to pop around to my place we can look at it for an hour or two. Can't make it an all day thing as I'll may have to attend to other clients. [10:47] definately...cause it was just the other day...switched on..and no more wifi. It's been working for 2 years (this is a new PC that I de-microsofted on purchase) [10:47] perfecto please comrade [10:48] my gut feeling is that it ain't a mega issue...can be sorted out sharp sharp...if you just know and have an idea [10:48] qwebirc72896: I sent you a direct message. [10:48] let me know if you got it. [10:48] ah see it [10:49] what the lsd stand for at end of name [10:51] andrewlsd get him sorted with an irc client as well [10:51] hehe [10:52] Kilos: =1 [10:52] Kilos: +1 [10:52] hehe [10:52] qwebirc72896: I work for LSD.co.za [10:53] qwebirc72896 if you hang out in this channel you can learn lots by watching others get helped and by helping noobs yourself [10:54] you can also join our mailing list which you will find there on the site under get involved [11:31] qwebirc72896 has safely arrived at andrewlsd. [11:31] yay [12:55] Hi Kilos and #ubuntu-za peeps: some feedback about qwebirc72896's issue. His wifi card uses RTL8723be module. for some reason, the dkms bit wasn't successfully installing the module. It was building it, but not loading it. (There may be another version of the module present preventing it from loading) [12:55] at the end insmod /lib/modules/`uname -r`/updates/dkms/rtl8723be.ko would make the wifi work.. but "modprobe" didn't seem to know about the DKMS path. [12:56] so his wifi is working [14:59] well done andrewlsd sorry i took so long [16:25] andrewlsd: is insmod permanent? [16:28] Maaz: seen Kilos [16:28] pavlushka: Kilos was last seen 1 hour, 29 minutes and 57 seconds ago in #ubuntu-za on freenode [2017-06-12 16:59:01 SAST], and has been online on freenode since 2017-06-12 12:47:06 SAST [19:02] night everyone, sleep tight
