en1gmai have windows 10 64bit installed on a single drive (SSD) with its default partition layout when you install windows 10. i have ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS on a usb stick and am thinking about installing on same SSD drive for a dual boot configuration. will i lose any data when i do this install? i domt know of drive is setup as GPT or MBR. does it matter?00:51
Jordan_Uen1gma: 1: Always have backups of any important data, even if you aren't planning to do something like repartitioning and installing a second OS.00:53
oerheksif you don't have a backup of your data, it is not important.00:53
oerheksboth gpt and mbr are supported.00:54
Bashing-omen1gma: How the drive is set up do matter . Ya want ton install ubuntu in the same mode as Win10 . OEM install of Wind10 is a EFI (GPT) install .00:54
kk4ewten1gma, and use windows to resize the windows partitions00:54
en1gmai can resize in windows 10 disk manager i think but then do i use gparted from live usb then reboot and do ubuntu installer?00:56
Jordan_Ukk4ewt: en1gma: I actually disagree with using Windows to resize the windows partitions. I think that ntfsresize (the tool used by Ubuntu's installer) is just as reliable at resizing ntfs as Windows' disk manager if both are used properly. I think there is less chance of user error when allowing Ubuntu's installer to handle partitioning.00:57
Jordan_Uen1gma: The Ubuntu installer can handle resizing your Windows installation.00:58
xpkill23hi serach vhost01:02
en1gmaim not worried about the resizing...nice try. i been talking about the gpt and mbr.01:08
en1gmai installed windows 10 64 bit on single ssd. bios settings = secure boot on for uefi and and bios = off01:09
en1gmawhat do i need to look for when using ubuntu 16.04 amd64 live installer01:10
en1gmawhen partitioning comes up.01:10
en1gmabtw i resize in windows 10 and then use gparted quite often with no ill effects.01:10
oerheksi would let windows make the free space, and let ubuntu handle partitioning & bootloader01:11
en1gmawhat does ubuntu do when it comes across a windows 10 installation? does it know to continue with gpt?01:11
Jordan_Uen1gma: Ubuntu's installer never changes the type of partition table (unless you tell it to whipe the whole drive) and would choose GPT for a UEFI based install anyway.01:22
en1gmaJordan_U good info to know there. thanks01:29
Jordan_Uen1gma: You're welcome.01:29

leftyfbok, I got one. Ubuntu 14.04.5. I'm running a container with a bridge interface so it's public facing. Every few days or so it just loaded all network connectivity. The only way to restore is to reboot the host completely. Shutting down the container, restarting lxcfs, nor restarting networking on the host resolves it.01:37
rntzhi. I have some lvm volumes I'd like to mount, but they're not appearing in /dev, either as /dev/<vgname>/<lvname>, or in /dev/mapper. googling brings up mostly irrelevant stuff. anybody got any clue how to figure out what's wrong?01:55
rntzI also tried `systemctl start lvm2`, but it says lvm2 is masked?01:56
rntznvm, figured it out02:00
ColdIceHi, I'm running a ipsec tunnel from router a to b-server (Ubuntu). On b-network, I can ping internal network on A-network. So IP-sec is working fine. But! I have another interface attached to the ubuntu server that is private network. Trying to route packets through the ubuntu server to A-network, but it's not working.02:12
ColdIceSo the client is another linux-distro, static route is configured towards the ubuntu server, but not working. Any network help please?02:13

laceyaneyCreated a minimal xubuntu desktop from the ubuntu netinstall iso on a standard 2009 macbook. Laptop does not resume / awake / turn on the screen when the lid has been closed. Does anyne know how I can fix ths ??06:32
YankDownUnderlaceyaney, Is it safe to assume you've already asked in #xubuntu?06:35
laceylaneyYes I did and I even posted on the macbook area of ubuntuforums...06:35
laceylaneyBeen trying to work this out for weeks...06:36
YankDownUnderlaceylaney, Cool bananas...just asking...06:36
YankDownUnderlaceylaney, And (as I'm looking at my MBP) - you've hit the "power" button - and the same, ya?06:37
laceylaneyWhenever I re-open the lid after I have closed it the screen sta~ys black and hitting the power button does nothing.06:37
laceylaneyTo get the laptop to work again I need to force power off by holding in the power button for seconds...06:38
YankDownUnderlaceylaney, Fair enough - asking "just so's I know"...06:38
laceylaneyTotally understand :-)06:38
YankDownUnderlaceylaney, yeah - well, doing that's kinda pointless, ya reckon, eh...06:38
YankDownUnderDoesn't resolve the issue at hand.06:38
laceylaneyYea it kind of is...06:39
YankDownUnderlaceylaney, What ver of Ubu? (16.04 or 17.04?)06:39
ThePortWhispererhello06:39
ThePortWhispereri rekked my box by doing a sudo mv $ENV_VAR/etc/passwd where the var was not set06:39
laceylaneyAll I want is to be able to close the lid and resume whenever I open it again. I'm using 16.04 fully updated...06:39
ThePortWhispereranyone know how i can boot from this live CD and restore my /etc/passwd file? i am here now https://snag.gy/n6xtdo.jpg06:40
YankDownUnderlaceylaney, Coolbeans...16.04 at least is "supported" - as it were...06:40
YankDownUnderlaceylaney, And you've like double/triple checked the "energy" settings - the power settings and display settings and all that lovely jazz in the XFce control centre, yersh?06:40
Easyriderlaceylaney I see a lot of complaints about that problem in the forums.  I am running 16.04 on a desktop and suspend does the same thing.  You have to power cycle the box to get it to come back.06:41
laceylaneyYes I have indeed :-)06:41
laceylaney~Ahhhh right ok, thanks for the heads up :-)06:41
sirru5h!whowas psycowarrior06:42
YankDownUnderIf all this is being "squacked" about in the forums - is there a primary issue - like is it the way the kernel handles the suspend/resume, or is it graphics, or is it the power daemon...? I'll assume it's not "desktop/window manager" related...06:42
laceylaneyIt can't be desktop related I don't think because this has happen to me before on, openbox, i3 or even lxde only installs...06:43
YankDownUnderlaceylaney, Yersh...reckoned as much...but still asked "just cuz"06:44
laceylaneyWhy not lol06:44
EasyriderIt acts like a bug to me.  I've not seen any credible solutions posted.06:44
YankDownUnderlaceylaney, When you do open the lid back up...and it's obviously BLACK...have you tried doing a CTRL+ALT+F1 to see if tty1 is accessible?06:44
laceylaneyYep I've tried many different things and that was one of them...06:45
YankDownUnderEasyrider, Small nuclear weapons are the answer. Kinda...not a clean answer...but an answer nonetheless...06:45
YankDownUnderlaceylaney, Thought so...still...gonna ask...06:45
YankDownUnderAnd if you actually choose "hibernate" or "suspend" when you're logging off/locking - it does the exact same thing?06:46
laceylaneywell with hibernate it does the same thing only it drains part of the battery while doing so.06:48
laceylaneySuspend just does the same as when closing the lid.~..06:48
laceylaneywith hibernate it is as if the batter does not fully power down...06:48
YankDownUnderlaceylaney, Yersh...06:49
YankDownUnderlaceylaney, And the amount of RAM you've got is equal to your swap size, yersh?06:49
laceylaneyYes indeedy06:49
YankDownUnderlaceylaney, ...and can't blame M$ for this...(dang...dang...dang)06:50
laceylaneyI just wish I could in some way...06:50
YankDownUnderlaceylaney, I'm actually taking a dig through kernel parameters...cuz my curiosity is piqued...06:50
laceylaneyThough in this day and age I hate apple just as much now lol. Ohhh amazing. Thank you very much :-)06:51
YankDownUnderlaceylaney, I'm reading this right now: https://askubuntu.com/questions/768136/how-can-i-hibernate-on-ubuntu-16-0406:52

BluesKajHey folks10:10

bizolosI mean everyone says to install these packages but I can't install them10:10
bizolosYep, I have to change my version but right now I can't. I'll have to do it quickly, but I can't right now10:10
Ben6412.04 is not safe to run10:11
bhoejteDoes anyone here know how to create a delay after successful authentication (pam)?10:11
bhoejteAll I can find is about minimizing or extending delays after authentication failures.10:11
daltobizolos: have you installed the DOM extension?10:12
sirru5hHowdy Everyone10:14
bizolosdalto, https://gist.github.com/anonymous/9d39e486f6d5a7aa6cd1dbddc8b55d8510:15
daltosudo apt-get install php5-dom according to https://stackoverflow.com/questions/14395239/class-domdocument-not-found - would that give ideas? I aint got a clue here and am relly just Dr. Googling10:18
GWMHi I have a question about SMB under Kubuntu (In a virtualbox VM) my fstab doesn't auto mount what I set in it, the file manager says "permission denied: no match for", but it of course works excellent if I do sudo mount -a, an example of my fstab would be as such; //192.168.1.84/New/  /media/smbshare-shiva/New/  cifs  username=guest,password=,uid=1000,iocharset=utf8,users  0  010:20
daltohasPHP7 solve for Ubuntu there also but sure about the non support deal with 12.04 TBH10:20
dalto*not sure I mean10:20
daltogotta roll10:21
bhoejtedoes it mount manually?10:23
GWMYes, if I use sudo mount -a it works10:23
GWMI googled it and it  said I should have users in the fstab line if I want all users to be able to mount it10:23
hateballGWM: then it sounds like the network isnt ready10:24
GWMYes the network is setup to auto connect to a VPN on this specific network10:24
GWMCan I setup a delay?10:24
bhoejtethat just allows users in the "users" group to mount.10:24
GWMwell I kinda assume my user is there, but let me check /etc/group10:25
hateballGWM: if it is the network (we dont know that) I'd suggest using https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Autofs10:25
hateballthen it will perform the mount when you try to access the share10:25
bhoejtejust issue "id", then you can see which groups your user is part of.10:25
GWMhuh I don't have a users group10:26
GWMsudo groupadd users?10:26
GWMalready exists huh10:27
bhoejteJust looked at the man page (and my own crontabs). In mine it just states "user", not "users".10:27
bhoejtesorry... fstabs10:27
GWMI saw both in examples10:28
GWMwhen user didn't work I took users10:28
GWMwhen that didn't work I went here10:28
GWM(after more googling)10:28
bhoejteI would say, like hateball, that the network might not be ready at mount time.10:29
bhoejteespecially as you can mount it manually.10:30
GWMI guess I don't mind setting up autofs, but if fstab could delay it would work as well10:30
GWMhardware (host and guest) is installed on a 960 evo nvme disk, might be too much for the poor wifi card in this laptop10:31
GWMor the auto join of a vpn10:31
bhoejteI think that does take a few seconds to set up...10:34
GWMMaybe I can use noauto10:34
GWMI'll try that first10:34
bhoejteThen it won't mount at boot time, but you can then add a little boot script to the end of the boot sequence. Of course depending on which init system you use.10:35
GWMI think default is systemd?10:35
bhoejteIn newer ubuntu, yes. Don't have much experience with that yet.10:35
obinoob#owncloud10:35
bhoejteBut, I think they've implemented a backwards compatible layer as well.10:36
GWMsysvinit fanatical? :D10:36
bhoejteNope. I use both, just haven't gotten as familiar with systemd as I am with SystemV10:36
GWMThis gif is either verboten or posted too often; http://i0.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/000/925/966/8d2.gif10:37
obinoobhi I'm having a hard time configuring davfs2 getting /sbin/mount.davfs:/etc/davfs2/davfs2.conf:36: unknown option it seems as soon as I uncoment secrets option in davfs2.conf bam!10:38
bhoejteHeh... I've seen that gif before. And must admit that I'm not a huge fan of systemd. That being said, there are some features i REALLY like in it.10:39
GWMHmmmm how do I edit my boot sequence under systemd then, and add mount -a too the end10:39
GWMquestions questions, google, my oracle, whisper me your secrets10:40
bhoejteSee, that's what I mean about not being all up on systemd. For me it'll be trial and error, but maybe they have a "last" keyword to the unit files somewhere.10:40
GWMoh a simple systemd script and put it after target.network maybe?10:40
obinoobanyone on davsf2 ?10:41
bhoejteunless your vpn is a separate target.10:41
GWMnow where does kubuntu want systemd scripts10:41
obinoob*davfs210:41
bhoejteobinoob: sorry, never used it.10:41
GWMnetwork-manager with openvpn plugin, let's find out10:41
obinoobbhoejte: thats fine ;) anyone else?10:42
bhoejteNow THAT i've seen just yesterday (unit file placement)... Just a moment.10:42
bhoejteCr.p... That was SuSE, but they have it in /etc/systemd/system10:43
bhoejteThat is, that's where they store their unit files.10:44
GWMuh, bhoejte, stupid question, but where is the actual mount command?10:45
GWMsbin? bin? /usr/bin?10:45
bhoejtein /bin/mount10:45
GWMI can find a mount.cifs in sbin10:45
bhoejteIn a shell, do an "which mount", that will tell you what command it executes.10:46
bhoejteIt calls the individual mount executables that's used for each filesystem.10:46
bhoejteYou could call the mount.cifs directly instead.10:47
GWMMkay10:47
GWMI wonder if this'll work; https://pastebin.com/Se33Ngc610:48
GWMtoo stupid?10:48
bhoejteIt might, and no, You're not too stupid, at least not from what I've seen. :-)10:49
obinoobis the davsf2 package broken for server 16.04 ?10:49
GWMI meant the script, not myself :D10:49
GWMAlright let's give it a spin, do I need to enable the service or will systemd pick it up10:49
GWMby itself?10:50
GWMsudo systemctl enable mount-smb.service?10:50
bhoejteI usually do ExecStart and ExecStop to execute start/stop scripts with unit files.10:50
GWMunit file?10:50
GWMwhat would I use as my ExecStop paramater?10:51
GWMThe same thing again?10:51
GWM[Service]10:52
GWMExecStart=/bin/mount -a10:52
GWMExecStop=/bin/mount -a10:52
bhoejteI call a wrapper script, then do the command in there.10:52
bhoejteBut it might work.10:52
bhoejteSomething like:10:52
bhoejteExecStart=/app/KMD_SCRIPTS/bin/wildfly_startup.sh ExecStop=/app/KMD_SCRIPTS/bin/wildfly_shutdown.sh10:52
GWMAlright10:53
GWMI'll give it a whirl, time to reboot10:53
Legendrecould someone give me a brief description of how the gpio pins are accessed?10:56
GWMRight. The next time I should maybe pay attention if I write sudo reboot into the VM or the host10:57
GWMmaybe.10:57
LegendreAre they abstracted to a /dev/ or .. something else?10:57
Legendrein this case, it's a zero10:57
Legendrecan they be addressed from basic useland?10:58
GWMbhoejte, journalctl says mount error(101): Network is unreachable10:58
Legendreyou know, poke / peek? =)10:58
GWMAs is maybe expected10:59
bhoejteThe the network is not accessible at the time...10:59
bhoejteDoes the vpn have a target name?10:59
GWMNah I didn't find any, it's network-manager that handles it10:59
* Legendre notes he's typing in the wrong channel. Arrgh.10:59
bhoejteand your cifs mount is through vpn, correct?10:59
GWMactually no10:59
GWMbut it might be in the future11:00
GWMso might as well fix it now11:00
=== jstein_ is now known as jstein
GWMmight = probably, 99% likely11:00
bhoejtestill, the network is obviously not ready.11:00
GWMI mean, if I could just add a 10 second delay it would all be moot11:00
GWM!11:01
GWMI'll make it auto restart11:01
GWMuntil it succeeds11:02
bhoejteJust found a page describing running something last in systemd: https://www.mauras.ch/systemd-run-it-last.html11:02
bhoejteLooks a bit complicated.11:02
IchimusaiThat's because systemd really prefers to run stuff in parallell if even remotely possible,11:03
Ichimusaibhoejte: Can't you tell systemd what the service depends on to have it started at the appropriate time?11:03
bhoejteHmm... You could change your service type for the command to "Type=idle". At least according to: https://superuser.com/questions/544399/how-do-you-make-a-systemd-service-as-the-last-service-on-boot11:04
Ichimusaibhoejte: (Although I must confess I have things that are started in a cron like fashion 5 min after system boot :-D )11:04
GWMhold my beer I'm going in, need to reboot for new kernel on host anyway11:05
bhoejteYes, but GWM has a problem with a command obviously starting prematurely, even though having set it to start AFTER the target.11:05
bhoejteAnyway, I think I can repeat my question without being called a spammer...11:06
bhoejteDoes anyone know how to create a delay after successful authentication?11:06
GWMWell neither idle nor restart worked11:10
GWMdammit11:10
bhoejtestill not working i take it.11:11
GWMIt's striking like a french union11:12
GWMI mean it works great if I restart the service I made11:12
bhoejteHeh... Just read it as a french onion... Lot's of layers to get through.11:12
GWMThough I found this; https://btux1984.wordpress.com/2015/10/15/start-a-service-after-openvpn-connection-has-been-established-using-systemd/11:13
GWMnow to find out what kind of vpn it setups, if it's even a tun adapter11:13
GWMip a says tun011:14
GWMwell hello11:14
GWM*rubs hands together and laughs maniacally* I'm sure this will be aaaaallll riiiight11:15
bhoejteso that would be sys-devices-virtual-net-tun0.device11:15
GWMThough it'll only work with a VPN now11:15
GWMif I move to say my home network, it'll fail11:15
GWMbut then again11:15
GWMmaybe fstab will pick up the slack then11:15
laceylaneyBack again ^^11:16
bhoejteThis is annoying. Why aren't things just easy.11:16
GWMfudge it, also, I should maybe install hexchat on the host and not guest11:16
GWMless msgs to nickserv identifying...11:17
bhoejteSeems the fstab is converted to mount units now, not read directly. That means, that each mount should have a separate service if i'm reading that correct.11:22
GWMbhoejte, *ARGH* It continues to vext me!11:23
bhoejtehttps://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/236953/fsck-script-location/236968#23696811:23
GWMsystemd isn't even honoring my restarts11:23
bhoejteAnd that's where i'm less happy with systemd. The debugging of the startup has become massively more complex. Oh well... Once it works it works well.11:25
GWMGot it now, thanks bhoejte!11:33
GWMGotta run now though11:33

rajivmarshi. i am using ubuntu 16.04. i have set the display brightness according to my preference, but wheever i plugged my laptop to power source the brightness is automatically increse. why is this happening?12:20
g33bznot too bad but its still early lol12:24
scottjlprobably some power saving feature in your bios. dims the screen on battery12:24
zasHey, is there a packaged kernel >= 4.10 with aufs and cpu cgroups for 16.04 available somewhere ? I have new servers using AMD Ryzen CPUs, that apparently needs recent kernels, and aufs is required for our docker setup. It happens http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ recent kernels have no AUFS support (stock 4.8 has it, but i had stability issues with amd cpus, so i want to try with more recent kernel).12:24
g33bzso i am having an issue connecting my phone to Ubuntu 16.04.  It used to work but stopped for some reason but it lets me charge the phone just not transfer pics or files or anything.  Any ideas?12:27

scottjlrajivmars: dimming in battery is a pretty common power saving feature. if other linux os' aren't doing it'd say they aren't supporting your laptop as well. anyway first place i'd check is if that is a feature in your bios.12:33
rajivmarssottjl: but why it is happening though i set the brightness to my limits?12:36

bhoejteCreate new default key for user foo (ssh-keygen)13:54
codecutterbut i already have one13:54
bhoejteAdd the pub part of the key to "authorized_keys", which should allow you to log in with foo locally.13:54
bhoejteThat's project and project.pub, right?13:55
jinkThat's what ssh-copy-id is for.  You normally shouldn't do that yourself.13:55
codecutter.ssh/authorized_keys -> .ssh/authorized_keys.pub ?13:55
bhoejteAlternately, add project.pub to authorized_keys, then use that key to try to log in:13:55
bhoejtessh -oIdentityFile=~/.ssh/project localhost13:56
bhoejteas the user foo13:56
codecutter project and project.pub, yes13:56
codecutterthen?13:57
codecutterssh -oIdentityFile=~/.ssh/project localhost <-- after this?13:58
bhoejteif that works, then we know that SSH works on the server for the foo user, and can concentrate on why it doesn't from outside.13:58
codecutterdoes not work13:58
codecutterlet me redo step413:58
codecutteri'll come back later13:58
bhoejteOk, and the project.pub file can now be found in authorized_keys, correct?13:58
codecutteryes13:59
bhoejteThen it looks like we have another problem. Maybe SSH is locked to specific groups of users.14:00
codecutterwill you be around later?14:00
codecutteri have to go away for a few minutes14:01
codecutterbl14:01
bhoejteNot much longer. I'm just having a lull at work right now.14:01
DirtyCajunso, NFS mount. If a single mount and moving files within that mount then there is no loss in speed over the lan. But 2 mounts that go to the same server would require the information to pass from mount a to mount be causing lan slowdown correct?14:02
bhoejteUsing the server where the 2 mounts are on for both incoming and outgoing trafic, yes.14:03
bhoejteThis is why doing moves on the NAS itself may sometimes be significantly faster than moving through the mount points. On the NAS it's the same filesystem and is "just" a move, not a copy/delete operation.14:04
bhoejteor on the server as the case may be.14:04
DirtyCajunbhoejte, so, i was thinking, to get around it... you mount the parent folder of the 2 mounts and then symlink the mount points14:05
DirtyCajunbhoejte, thoughts?14:05
bhoejteThat would work. Export the parent folder, and then mount that instead.14:05
DirtyCajunawesome!14:06
bhoejtewhops... Symlink the mount points?14:06
DirtyCajunbhoejte, e.g. /parent/folder1  /parent/folder2   mount /parent as /parent  and symlink folder1 and folder2 as /folder1 /folder2.  then you can move files from folder1 to folder 2 with no loss of lan speed14:07
bhoejteIf you're trying to symlink into an NFS server, then I don't know that that would actually be seen as the same filesystem. It should, though. Otherwise, just copy directly in the mount point itself.14:07
bhoejteThat is, instead of "mv /folder1/file /folder2/file" use "mv /mount/folder1/file /mount/folder2/file"14:08
DirtyCajunbhoejte, right. and thats the easy way. I have written a lot of scripts that reference it as /parent/folder1 etc so i am trying to find a solution that doesnt require me to completely rewrite my script14:10
bhoejteSounds like a good goal. :-)14:11
BergcubeI run Ubuntu 17.04 on a laptop with VLC 2.2.4 from the respositories. I have run into a problem: When I try to play WEBM files VLC shows the first frame of the clip, the time bar advances, but the video remains frozen. The problem is consistent on all webm files, and a check with the Totem player shows that the clips does indeed have motion.14:13
bhoejteJust tried your setup with a 1GiB file, and it was moved instantaneously, also through symlinks, so yes, it should work.14:14
jaydemiranyone know of a good program to record audio into an MP3 directly from the PC itself?14:15
bhoejteDoes anyone know how to create a delay after successful authentication (pam)?14:16
=== LjL is now known as vrms
bhoejteoh well... arecord piped through to lame might be a solution to that.14:18
SchrodingersScathe's gone, it's over14:18
bhoejtesaw it... That's what the "oh well" was for.14:19
bhoejteSame as with my own question. Doesn't look like I'm having any luck, so i'll have to stick with pam_script and a "sleep 1" for now.14:21
DirtyCajunbhuddah, nup didnt work because nfs cannot traverse the subdirectories of different filesystems14:49

en1gmawhen i use fdisk -l /dev/sda it list 4 primary partitions before i ever even get to resizing, formatting ext4 and adding a swap file? that would be 615:02
=== vrms is now known as LjL
DJonesen1gma: If its an old MBR partioning scheme, you can have 3 primary partitions + 1 extended partition with multiple partitions inside the last one, if its EFI, that can support up to 128 partitions15:06
DJonesen1gma: My sda is gpt  and has 8 partitions15:07
DirtyCajunen1gma, also... as of ubuntu 17.04 swap is now a file and no longer a partition by default. which is great.15:08

RBoreal_FripperyA good amount of years ago I had huge pains to get multiple video cards working in ubuntu, I am wondering if anything has improved. Basically, I have a laptop with two outputs, but I would like to drive three displays. It will be desktop work, nothing intensive, so I have taken note that there are USB3.0 'graphics cards' available for sale. How well is it supported to offload one monitor to the second graphics card?16:28

jonascjHi all. On a machine running 16.04 I've installed an Asus PCE-AC51 wireless pci-e card. The card is listed as a network device by 'lspci' and 'ip link' lists a new wl0whatever device.19:16
jonascjbut network manager does not show any wireless networks being found (my laptop and phone shows a 2.4GHz and 5Ghz network).19:17
jonascjI've found some forum posts saying you actually need to install the kernel module (driver) provided by asus, but since it is already recognized as a network device isn't the kernel module already there and loaded?19:18
akikjonascj: you can check if you computer sees any ssids: sudo iwlist wl0whatever scan19:18

akikjonascj: also check dmesg for error regarding your wireless device19:20
jonascjakik: right, on it!19:25

jonascjakik: according to wikipedia it has been in ubuntu since version 8. It governs many permission things like are you allowed to mount, are you allowed to reboot, talk to certain processes etc.19:36

fadavi`$ groups` => 'mohamad adm cdrom sudo dip www-data plugdev lpadmin sambashare vboxusers storage'19:53
fadavi`# ls /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d` => '10-udisks.pkla'19:53
jonascjfadavi: like I said, I don't know much about polkit, but your issue just sounded like a configuration issue of that sort. Long before going into some specific "solution" like the one I linked I would of course have researched "ubuntu 16 udiskctl not authorized", likely someone has had the exact same issue earlier, and it might not be polkit after all19:55
fadavijonascj: thanks again. i'll do more search to solve it. your advices was so helpful19:56
CarlFKwhat can I pass the kernel to tell it text only, and not even any fancy text.  just 80x25.19:58
frontrowalexHey folks, quick question, I configured sshd to disable password based logins, and I created a new user to ssh into the box as, with no password (the password is a ! in /etc/shadow). When I try to ssh in as that user, I'm told the user is locked out. So far I've been able to unlock it by setting a random password in there, but it seems unnecessary19:58
frontrowalexcan I unlock that new user without setting a password?19:59
oerheksfrontrowalex, normally passwordless ssh access means you need to create ssh-keys20:00
akikfrontrowalex: use "sudo passwd -u username" to unlock it20:00
frontrowalexoerheks: yessir, have those set up20:00
pylearnerI need to have rc.local active other than creating the file and making it executable is there anything else i need to do20:01
Bashing-omCarlFK: Have you tried passing the boot parameter ' text ' - (remove quiet splash ) ?20:01
akikCarlFK: you can start with video=640x480 as a new kernel parameter20:01
CarlFKakik: won't that flip into vga 640x480?20:02
CarlFKBashing-om: trying text now...20:02
akikCarlFK: i've given up trying to get the plain console back. the mode is changed also during initrd20:02
frontrowalexakik: I remember reading somewhere that command might allow people to become that user since it's now passwordless. I might have misread that though.20:02
akikfrontrowalex: the ! is a sign of the locked password20:03
frontrowalexAlso is there any way to create a user that's immediately unlocked (and has no password) after useradd or is that just how it has to work?20:03
akikfrontrowalex: you can see account status with "sudo passwd -S username". it shows L if it's locked20:04
MortvertHello.20:05
CarlFKBashing-om: text no good. I see it say something like "trying to enable frame buffer" and then the screen goes blank20:06
CarlFKfound it!!! fb=false20:06
akikCarlFK: really?20:07
CarlFKakik: yep20:07
Bashing-omCarlFK: Ouch ! .. Does not seem right ... what release ?, and I will reboot to test .20:07
akikCarlFK: thank you20:07
CarlFKBashing-om: sec and I will have all the details on github20:09
MortvertI kinda need help creating a bootable windows 7 installer USB stick. I've got iso and I'm running on ubuntu livecd right now20:09
MortvertTrying to follow http://www.webupd8.org/2010/10/create-bootable-windows-7-usb-drive.html but chmod +x on unetbootin doesn't work20:09
akikCarlFK: on my machine the virtual console becomes bigger than the actual screen, i.e. in an editor i don't see the whole file20:11
debouncerYou may want to use Universal USB Installer20:11
frontrowalexakik: thanks, that helps20:11
annihilator03its funny im having some withdraws from windows because of one or two games because streaming through steam is a bit of an issue sometimes but other than that i actually dont do anywhere as much on my computer as i did on windows20:11

fribscottjl, do you know how to restore it?20:13
frontrowalexI'm consulting the documentation for /etc/shadow and it looks like with ! in the password field the user should still be able to log in through ssh, same with *, is that correct?20:13
scottjli don't do efi. sorry20:13
Mortvertdebouncer,  that's an exe. I'm on ubuntu livecd right now20:13
akikMortvert: you can follow this guide to do it: https://atkdinosaurus.wordpress.com/2016/07/20/how-to-create-a-bootable-windows-7-usb-stick-in-linux/20:14
debouncerMortvert: Did you try Startup Disk Creator?20:14
oerheksMolthere is no linux tool for windows7, use an other windows to do that20:15
oerheksor manually see akik20:15
crisedCan I run ubuntu server from USB pen drive? Is it recommended? (FreeNAS does a similar thing)20:16
oerhekscrised, yes you *can*. (i would like to see it with 20 users ..)20:17
crisedoerheks: it's just for home use20:17
kenrinYou do know freenas is completely different from ubuntu server right?20:17
crisedkenrin: I'm changing from FreeNas since I found it a little too complicated20:18
oerhekscrised, if you have up to 5 users, you'll be fine, depending on hardware i guess.20:18
kenrinWhatever you want I guess.  Just that usb random writes are garbage and will likely block writes on your software raid array too20:21

peyamHi, anybody can please help me install intellij idea using ppa. Every ppa I use returns a "Error: user blabla does not exist"20:32
akikCarlFK: i was able to fix the virtual console size with "fbset -g 640 480 640 480 32" followed by xterm package's "resize"20:32
CarlFKpeyam: I can help a little if you give me  a PPA URL20:35
CarlFKakik: im missing context or something.  i am running the installer in qemu vm.  is that what you are doing?20:35
peyamCarlFK, I reinstalled the certificates. and it did add the ppa but now it gives an error in installation20:36
peyamCarlFK, sudo apt-add-repository ppa:mmk2410/intellij-idea20:37
akikCarlFK: no, i'm using an acer laptop20:42
CarlFKakik: crazy.  I am using an acer laptop to run qemu on20:43

fribHi. I am trying to restore my EFI partition (accidentally deleted) with boot-repair. Boot-repair tells me to create a an EFI partition with boot, which I did, but then is unable to recognize the partition. How do I fix this? thanks!20:52
akikfrib: did you set its partition type code as ef00 ?20:58
akikfrib: (i don't know how to restore it, though)20:58
fribakik, i tried using the hex code in fdisk (much longer than ef00) and it showed up as "EFI"20:59
fribdo I need to explicitly use this ef00 type?20:59
akikfrib: i think you should use gdisk, not fdisk20:59
fribakik, ok, how do I set code as ef00 though?20:59
akikfrib: under Code column you should see EF0021:00
fribakik, ok I did it21:00
fribill try boot-repair again now21:00
akikfrib: in gdisk "t       change a partition's type code"21:01
fribakik, yes I did it21:01
fribakik, but boot repair still doesn't recognize this partition21:01
frib   1            2048          411647   200.0 MiB   EF0021:01
akikfrib: sorry i don't know how to restore it. somebody else can probably help21:02
akikmaybe grub-install would work(?)21:02
fribakik, thanks anyway21:02
fribakik, but would grub-install restore the EFI files and everything?21:02
akikfrib: no idea21:03
fribakik, actually I think mounting the EFI partition and running grub-install was all that was necessary21:06
fribakik, I will try to reboot now21:06
akikfrib: is your efi partition empty?21:06
akikfrib: before grub-install?21:06
fribakik, I deleted it by accident21:06
fribso yea21:06
fribakik, i created a new one and added its UUID to fstab21:06
fribmounted it, ran grub-install, and the EFI files appear there21:07
akikfrib: ok this is all new to me21:07
fribakik, gona try and reboot, cross fingers~!21:07
fribakik, worked perfectly!21:08
akikfrib: nice21:08
fribstrange this information is so hard to come by in #ubuntu21:08
akikfrib: so it wasn't that hard. just that i've never done it :)21:09
fribit happened to me once before and I ended up reinstalling21:09
fribbecause nobody could tell me how to fix it21:09
akikfrib: so only update the uuid for /boot/efi in fstab and grub-install /dev/sda ?21:09
akikor /dev/sda1 ?21:09
fribwell I had the advantage of not turning off my computer after deleting my EFI partition in gparted21:10
fribso I was still booted in my OS21:10
friball I had to do was create a new FAT32 partition with boot/esp flags21:10
fribsince it gets a new UUID you have to update /etc/fstab to mount the new UUID to /boot/EFI21:11
fribonce you do that, run sudo mount -a to mount all21:11
akikfrib: which device did you use with grub-install?21:11
fribthen just run sudo grub-install /dev/sdx21:11

iseneWhen my laptop (Dell XPS-15, Ubuntu 17.04) wakes up from suspend, the clock runs from where it left off upon suspend until I get network connection so that it corrects itself via ntp. Seems the hwclock doesn't do anything. How to fix?21:49
xebrahi, about secure boot and third party drivers (i.e. Nvidia driver). Ubuntu asks to disable secure boot when installing them. It seems secure boot must remain disabled if you want to use them. Ok, but the problem is: what if I have a dual boot with Windows? Ubuntu + Nvidia driver = secure boot off. Secure boot off = windows won't work anymore?22:19
akikxebra: i'm booting the laptop with grubx64.efi and don't need to disable the secure boot. i've been wondering about it too22:19
akikxebra: i just say no to the question about disabling secure boot22:20
akik# mokutil --sb-state22:21
akikSecureBoot enabled22:21
xebraakik, but do you have third party drivers installed? I'm afraid ubuntu won't install anything like that if I don't disable secure boot. I'm not actually sure I *need* third party drivers, but I'm not sure how Nividia and other things will work otherwise22:21
akikxebra: yes, nvidia22:21
xebraakik, what ubuntu version? I heard this changed in 16.04. If you have 15, then maybe it works anyway22:22
akikxebra: this is 14.0422:22
xebraakik, oh, then that's why it works for you22:23
akikxebra: i had to add grubx64.efi through my laptop's bios to the boot list22:26
