BillGHeroHello. I am here because I have been trying to troubleshoot a scanning  (sane) problem on my Ubuntu 16.04 install02:53
BillGHeroI tried the sane channel, but not a single user out of the other 24 so much as hiccuped for over an hour. :-S02:54
sarnoldthat's irc for ya02:58
sarnoldpeople tend to reply only on specific questions02:58
BillGHeroYes, but not on the sane channel tonight.02:58
BillGHeroI have a brother MFC that has always worked with the vendor drivers for scanning over the network in older versions of ubuntu, but cannot get it working with 16.04. Printing works ok.02:58
BillGHeroAnybody know how best to proceed to troubleshot this on Ubuntu 16.04? Because all the standard answers I found do not help.03:01
BillGHeroOr, if someone knows where they posted the desing docs for Ubuntu 16.04, that would work too...03:01
BillGHero* "design docs"03:02
sarnolddo you get any error messages when you try to use it? does anything show up in the logs? dmesg output?03:02
BillGHeroNot sure how to get the dmesg output.03:04
BillGHeroScanner utilities cannot see the scanner, even though the brother utility does.03:05
sarnolddmesg gives you dmesg output :)03:06
BillGHeroOk, ran "sudo dmesg -wH" and then ran xsane. No messages showed up, xsane just complained that it couldn't find any scanners.03:07
BillGHeroClarification: There is output from the dmesg, jsut nothing new for the xsane program.03:07
sarnoldif you unplug and replug the scanner do you get anything?03:08
BillGHeroUnplug? My scanner is on my network.03:09
sarnoldaha03:09
sarnoldcan you ping it?03:09
sarnolddoes it have a web interface? (some networked devices have simple web servers)03:09
BillGHeroI can print to it. Let me  make sure it will ping tho...03:09
BillGHeroYep, 0 packet loss.03:10
sarnoldalright good news there; if you stick the IP in a browser do you get a web interface of some sort?03:11
BillGHeroNope, but I would never get one anyways. This printer does not provide such.03:12
sarnoldbummer :/ maybe nmap it and hope they stuffed one on another port?03:14
BillGHeroIt worked fine for scanning with the Brother .deb packages on Ubuntu 14, so I am damn near 100% sure that it is an issue with Ubuntu 16.04.03:15
BillGHeroI am using same network, same computer, same multifunction printer/scanner. Just newer Ubuntu.03:16
BillGHeroThe brother .deb package provides the sane backend.03:18
BillGHeroI THINK the sane daemon is running, based on the previous two hours of troubleshooting. But, I do not know for sure if it is configured corectly.03:19
sarnoldhrm the brscan4 package at least does different things based on install order. that's a bit confusing.03:21
sarnoldtry uninstalling and reinstalling the brscan package03:21
BillGHeroIt's brscan3 for this case, just in case it matters.03:22
sarnoldaha i'll give that a look too03:22
sarnoldgive the uninstall/reinstall a shot while I download and unpack it03:22
BillGHeroMine's a Brother MFC-6490CW03:22
sarnoldsame style of operation that only does things at install time if a file exists.03:25
BillGHeroTrue, but also has a step for each package to check to see if the isntall command worked.03:26
BillGHeroOk, removed and re-installed. Checked and bothe the 'driver' and the brsaneconfig-uration shows good.03:28
BillGHeroxsane still doesn't see the scanner. Only error is something about an invalid string constant "task-buttons"03:29
BillGHeroProbably un-related.03:29
sarnoldthe postinst script looks for /usr/lib/sane before performing a bunch of operations; that might have existed in earlier releases, might not, but I don't see it in 16.04 LTS.03:29
sarnoldso lets just try running those operations by hand :)03:30
BillGHeroYou mean running xsane from the command line?03:30
sarnoldhere's the commands the package's postinst script runs if that directory exists; try running these commands (as root) and then try again http://paste.ubuntu.com/24930210/03:31
BillGHeroAha, I think you are on to something03:36
BillGHerothere is no /usr/lib/sane/03:37
BillGHeroAnd no error message from the instalation either..03:38
BillGHeroIt worked!03:41
BillGHeroThank you so much!03:41
sarnoldsweet :)03:42
BillGHeroBut, how did you know that those links were not there?03:42
sarnoldI'm not even sure the links need to be created by hand like that. It's been years since I've really done library things by hand but I thoguht ldconfig was supposed to create those, and I thought dpkg just did that these days.03:43
sarnoldso the links may or may not have been related03:44
sarnoldit might have been running the /usr/local/Brother/sane/setupSaneScan3 -i command which unlocked it. I'm not sure which :)03:44
BillGHeroStill, thanks :)03:46
sarnoldyou're welcome, I'm glad it works :)03:46

Laneylooks like even warty did http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/warty/08:24

Laneysounds from the text at the top like most systems were x86 back then08:31
Laneymaybe almost no desktops were amd64 or something08:31
didrocksI surely had a x86 laptop at the time08:32
oSoMoNseb128, hey, I updated my LO 5.3.3 snap at http://people.canonical.com/~osomon/libreoffice_5.3.3.2_amd64.snap , in case you haven't tried it yet08:50

jibelthanks09:00
oSoMoNchrisccoulson, seen my comments about chromium yesterday? I filed https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=735947 upstream, and I think the packages in ppa:canonical-chromium-builds/stage should be good to go, for when you have some time to review them09:43

didrocksyou can still ask other AA to get you sponsored/unblocked10:55
jibeldidrocks, it seems that ubiquity removal broke with the release of livecd-rootfs you did on the 6th11:14
didrocksjibel: could be the logic changed then. cyphermox is looking at it AFAIK.11:18
flexiondotorgdidrocks OK. I'll see if I can get someone else to assist.11:34

cyphermoxdidrocks: jibel: right; didrocks' change looks correct to me, somehow live-build disagrees and does the wrong thing13:37

cyphermoxjust fyi, didrocks is assigned, but if you want to fix it "sooner", you might already know whether indicators are required in the gnome-shell world18:11
Laneycyphermox: they can be removed, unless they are required for some ubiquity usecase18:14
LaneyI'm on a too crappy connection to do that (see my previous lines)18:14
Laneyso go for it18:14
cyphermoxLaney: tbf, I'm eager to put this aside and move on to other thigns I need to do before I'm on vacation next week18:15
cyphermoxLaney: I don't think one more day is a big deal, didrocks or someone else can do the changes monday18:15
Laneyhe's away18:15
Laneybut ok... feels like it would be easy to do for someone who already figured it out18:15
Laneyas you wish18:15
cyphermoxit's not hard to do for anyone, sicne I already mentioned the details on the bug18:16
Laneyit requires someone to sit down and get to it18:16
cyphermoxto decide whether the indicators are needed and unseed or MIR18:18
Laneyno18:19
Laneythey are not needed18:19
Laneytrain is moving now, probably going to drop off18:19
Laneyorite, unity-greeter18:20
LaneyI think they will drop off automatically once that's gone18:20
Laneyit's not a direct seed18:20
* Laney replied18:21
Laneycyphermox: thanks for the analysis!18:22
immuwhat is the level of Optimus technology support in ubuntu? for dual graphics19:36
cyphermoxLaney: ok, circled back to this now, I can fix it21:09
cyphermoxoh, but this is lightdm vs. gdm3 stuff21:11
jbichayes, it's unity-greeter21:15
cyphermoxyes, that's what I was saying21:17
