xangua | Did you try https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair | 00:39 |
Ruben | let me see. | 00:40 |
Ruben | actually I was about to try that thing but what concerns me is that it was a brand new installation, I mean I formatted the HDD and installed the os from scratch | 00:42 |
Ruben | So, as far as I understand I should't need to repair it since it should come well from the downloaded image | 00:43 |
Ruben | I'll install it one more time and try that out. but yes that happened to me almost at the end, so, I assume that the OS has been already installed and all what is broken is the boot manager. The issue is that I have very little experience dong this. | 00:45 |
lynorian | Ruben, the way I fix that is actually to boot a live session and run sudo grub-install /dev/sda if /dev/sda is your drive you are booting from | 00:49 |
Ruben | ok, I'll try that out, thanks. | 00:52 |
Ruben | just to let you know I downloaded again lubuntu from this server http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/releases/17.04/release/lubuntu-17.04-desktop-i386.iso and it worked great, not sure why I couldn't install it before. Regardless, thanks a lot for your comments | 04:13 |
fishcooker | i usually using gmrun to execute... what's the alternative from lubuntu? | 04:24 |
flaneur | hello | 10:04 |
flaneur | i am using lubuntu 16.04 and i seem to be unable to record any audio | 10:04 |
hateball | flaneur: Using what application to test? | 10:05 |
flaneur | audacity, mumble, skype.. | 10:05 |
flaneur | and in the end i tried arecord | 10:06 |
flaneur | via terminal | 10:06 |
hateball | flaneur: have you checked using alsamixer that the mic is not muted? | 10:06 |
flaneur | yes | 10:06 |
flaneur | in the record section i got: | 10:07 |
flaneur | Mic Boost, Capture, Digital, Dock Mic Boost, Internal Mic B | 10:07 |
flaneur | Mic Boost: 13 | 10:08 |
flaneur | Capture: 100 | 10:08 |
flaneur | others: 0 | 10:08 |
flaneur | i made a reset, that was the outcome | 10:08 |
flaneur | sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils reset | 10:08 |
hateball | Hmmm, then I dont really know | 10:09 |
hateball | You may consider asking in #ubuntu also, to get more eyes on it. It's hardly DE-specific | 10:09 |
flaneur | yes thats right | 10:09 |
flaneur | it is an issue since i upgraded from 14.04, apparently many people have it | 10:10 |
flaneur | and noone has found a solution yet | 10:10 |
flaneur | i thought maybe it was DE-specific, since Lubuntu uses Alsa | 10:10 |
hateball | True enough | 10:10 |
flaneur | and the others use Pulse, i thought? | 10:10 |
flaneur | ok, i will check #ubuntu, thanks for your thoughts :) | 10:11 |
int1 | hello? | 13:01 |
int1 | what's the best way to get a cheap laptop to run lubuntu? | 13:02 |
int1 | i found ubuntu desktop certified dell laptops -- is that the way to go? | 13:02 |
hateball | int1: https://certification.ubuntu.com/ | 13:11 |
leszek | int1: thinkpad x200s are very cheap on ebay and run lubuntu fine. I can personally recommend those as they have long battery time (with the biggest battery available) and are pretty solid devices. Though the technology is a bit old. Maybe some successors to it might be also worth trying | 13:15 |
hateball | As long as it doesnt have hybrid gpu and/or realtek wifi chipsets then anything usually just works well | 13:16 |
hateball | int1: There is also ##hardware you might ask in | 13:17 |
int1 | is lubuntu the best choice for eco + security? | 13:27 |
int1 | ( + novice-intermediate experience) | 13:27 |
leszek | depends on what you mean by security. When it comes to privacy protection tails would be the best running as live system only | 13:32 |
hateball | what does "eco" mean? | 13:35 |
int1 | ecological | 13:39 |
int1 | environmentally-friendly ... i guess long battery low electricity consumption or recyclable ... | 13:39 |
int1 | wow, thanks ... | 13:41 |
dueldu | . | 17:59 |
dueldu | Hello there! I'm currently using Lubuntu 16.04.2 LTS. I'm having some issues with cairo-dock if anybody is familiar with that software. Whenever I use it it blocks out the upper half of my window with its "fake opacity" and it blocks files on my desktop as well. I've tried fixing it by installing compiz which is simply telling me that there already is a window manager (OpenBox I assume) but the problem persists. Any help? | 18:03 |
leszek | dueldu: yeah compiz is the right direction. You need compositing enabled for such software like cairo-dock to work properly | 18:05 |
leszek | I would personally recommend using something like compton instead of compiz if you don't need all the fancy effects of compiz. Compton does not replace openbox but only activates compositing for it as far as I understand it | 18:07 |
dueldu | I will look into it. Thanks for the quick help. | 18:07 |
leszek | dueldu: here is a video though I think in italian but video which shows how to install it and use it I guess: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frfzgOQycpU | 18:08 |
leszek | it seems to use also docky or some dock app | 18:08 |
leszek | aswell | 18:08 |
dueldu | Thank you so much. I've been testing around for hours by now. | 18:09 |
