LachezarHey all. X-Posting from #ubuntu as instructed:12:11
LachezarI got bit by what seems to be a kernel bug: Java programs crash with SIGSEGV. However the bug seems to have been fixed in 3.16.43-2+deb8u2 and 4.9.30-2+deb9u2, but I'm on Ubuntu's 4.10.0-24-generic.12:11
apwLachezar, likely fallout from the stackclash updates ... there are new kernels dropping into -proposed pretty much now, you might test one of those and see if it resolves your issue12:17
Lachezarapw: I have zesty-proposed enabled. Is "apt-get dist-upgrade" sufficient?12:19
* apw wonders if zesty is yet built ...12:21
ogra_Lachezar, no, that brings in all newer packages from proposed ... you most likely only want to cherry pick one package and then disable proposed again 12:21
ogra_proposed tends to have test packages that could be severely broken12:21
Lachezarogra_: I see. So I do not enable proposed, but download and 'dpkg -i' them?12:21
ogra_(indeed dist-upgrade usually has a (Y/N) question, so you could stop it)12:22
apwLachezar, zesty is still building anyhow, it is one of the later ones in the list it seems, coming "soon"12:22
ogra_Lachezar, no, enable proposed but install via packag name 12:22
ogra_not just through some "update all" command12:22
apwsomething like .... enable proposed; apt-get update; apt-get install linux-generic; disable proposed; apt-get update12:23
Lachezarapw: Ah. OK.12:23
Lachezarogra_: thanks.12:23
apwbut as i say, we are in the process of spinning kernels (or is it plates) now12:23
LachezarKernels would be in proposed/main right? Not universe, multiverse etc.12:25
apwLachezar, depends on the kernel, but for the primary ones for desktop/server etc yes, those would be in main12:25

hallynall right, so confirmed, 4.8 kernel appears to cause my t440s screen to flicker every few minutes.  hasn't happened since downgrading to 4.420:24
hallynthe random flicker was strangely stressful - may as well have been an electric shock20:24
apwhallyn, you know the drill ... bug please21:42
hallynapw: well, this was intended as a datapoint in case you've heard other reports;  i need to get harder data to file a bug :)21:43
hallyni'll keep my eye on it, boot back and forth, etc.21:43
apwhallyn, not heard of it no, though i guess i didn't run 4.8 very long21:44
hallyni have to stay on xenial so i can keep running upstart :)21:44
hallynmind you 4.8 seemed better with batt usage than 4.421:45
apwhallyn, i think we did feel the same on battery21:50
apwhallyn, well you have the option of a 4.10 in xenial ... linux-hwe-edge21:50
hallynso i'll boot back into that tomorrow and file a bug21:50
hallynah, i'll try that, thx21:51
hallyn(after tomorrow)21:51
apwheh yeah, and keep us informed21:51
hallynwill do21:51
