sorinello | Hello. Does anyone using Xubuntu on a 1080/FullHD screen ? | 07:55 |
---|---|---|
sorinello | on a laptop screen I mean | 07:55 |
diogenes_ | why? | 08:00 |
sorinello | well on my laptop (14') screen, fullHD has really really small text | 08:01 |
diogenes_ | i guess with that small size and huge resolution, it's normal, you need 17+ inch screen | 08:03 |
sorinello | so why do they put fullHD screens on 14 inch laptops | 08:04 |
diogenes_ | price | 08:04 |
diogenes_ | for 14, the better option would be maybe 1366X768 | 08:04 |
diogenes_ | it's good you didn't get 4K resolution with 14 inches then you wouldn't be able to see a damn thing on the screen XD | 08:06 |
sorinello | but there must be a fix for this | 08:19 |
moetunes | sorinello: you can use a different resolution | 08:35 |
ikatnik | My system slows down horribly when I use Juno webmail through my firefox browser. I think it runs some sort of script. Is there a way to shut down the script? Should I use another browser? I use firefox because I am familiar with how to prevent ads and what it communicates to websites about me. Thank you. | 14:29 |

diogenes_ | ikatguy, what are the specs? | 14:55 |
ikatguy | Hi Diogenes. You have helped me before. I am very new to linux. Where /how to get specs for you. I can use cmd line, but do not know any commands offhand. | 14:57 |
diogenes_ | ikatguy, run: sudo apt install inxi | 14:58 |
ikatguy | Done. What now? | 15:00 |
diogenes_ | now run: inxi -Fxrc0 | 15:01 |
diogenes_ | and copy/paste what you get in terminal, paste it to susepaste.org | 15:01 |
diogenes_ | and share the link here | 15:02 |
ikatguy | It returned an error, "You are a Spammer". Do I need to create an account? | 15:04 |
juliank | diogenes_: Recommending the suse pastebin in an *ubuntu channel? | 15:05 |
* juliank uses https://paste.ubuntu.com/ for Ubuntu pastes | 15:05 | |
diogenes_ | juliank, I live in a cave, and susepaste is the only site I know | 15:05 |
diogenes_ | ikatguy, use the recommended: https://paste.ubuntu.com/ | 15:06 |
juliank | diogenes_: Lots of chameleons in your cave? ;) | 15:06 |
diogenes_ | juliank, chameleons, geekos, strange yaks and a lot more :) | 15:07 |
ikatguy | https://paste.ubuntu.com/24996944/ try this! | 15:08 |
ikatguy | (I prefer to be a skink) | 15:08 |
ikatguy | diogenes, (obviously) included problem mentioned with install (Ignoring file) | 15:09 |
diogenes_ | ikatguy, as I understand, you're using an AMD athlon 2008 release year with 1.9 GHz and memory @GB and ancient graphics card, using a 64 bit OS will do great achievements? | 15:20 |
diogenes_ | ikatguy, you should be using xubuntu 14.04, 32-bit with fglrx driver and then you might acviete a greater performance with your pc specs | 15:21 |
diogenes_ | achieve* | 15:21 |
ikatguy | OK. Do I do a complete new installation? If so, where do I go for that install file(s)? | 15:22 |
diogenes_ | ikatguy, backup your data first, if you have a separate /home partition then you don't format it when you install the new system | 15:23 |
diogenes_ | ikatguy, run: lsblk | 15:24 |
diogenes_ | and copy/paste to https://paste.ubuntu.com | 15:24 |
diogenes_ | share the link here | 15:24 |
ikatguy | Backup is no problem. I do not know about the partition. Believe it or not, I got the system from a local volunteer organization who reconditions computers. Doing the lsblk cmd now. | 15:25 |
diogenes_ | ok waiting | 15:25 |
ikatguy | https://paste.ubuntu.com/24997034/ | 15:27 |
diogenes_ | you have no separate /home partition, so you have to backup all your data, then erase everything and install xubuntu 14.04 32-bit (which will be supported till April 2019) and you should be good to go | 15:28 |
ikatguy | Great. Go where for the said 32 bit install (?), not to mention the fglrx driver (not sure about that). No problem backing up. | 15:30 |
diogenes_ | ikatguy, here is where you get it: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/14.04/release/ | 15:32 |
ikatguy | Great. I may need to take a break for a bit. Thanks muchly. And I will report (unless you do not want me to bother). | 15:33 |
diogenes_ | ikatguy, you can ask anytime you want | 15:34 |
diogenes_ | I have no other occupation in my cave anyway | 15:34 |
juliank | 2GB of RAM? Wow. | 15:39 |
ikatguy | I resemble that remark! | 15:39 |
juliank | My mother had 4 GB and that was not enough, now she has 6 GB which seems OK | 15:39 |
diogenes_ | juliank, even if he had 32 GB of RAM, with that poor processor his PC is getting frozen if he opens more than one firefox tab | 15:40 |
juliank | I think that CPU is slower than a Atom N2830 | 15:41 |
juliank | ikatguy: Did you mean resent? | 15:42 |
juliank | Or do you agree? | 15:42 |
* juliank was confused for some short time | 15:42 | |
ikatguy | I decided to get a cheap laptop, and it suits my email needs fine. I also like the recycling aspect. And it was cheap. BTW, I MEANT resemble. | 15:45 |
juliank | ikatguy: Ah, OK, thing was: I did not know that meaning of the word | 15:46 |
juliank | Only the "similar to" meaning, so I was a bit confused | 15:46 |
juliank | To be fair, that meaning is listed as rare and archaic in the dictionary | 15:47 |
ikatguy | (Yes, I agree). Gotta ring off for saturday errands and the like. Thanks again for all your help. And I think you are very on the ball about the processor, because I do use tabs, and the thing gets hot. So the little I know says the processor ancien (and I MEAN ancien) is probably not up to the task. Gotta go, thanks again. | 15:47 |
diogenes_ | yes ikatguy you made a good decision if that is what you need it for, the only thing you need is the lighter OS release and architecture (that I suggested) and you good to go! when you install xubuntu 14.04 i386, then first step you take is do: 1) sudo apt-get update 2) sudo apt-get upgrade, after that you reboot, after reboot you try to figure out how to install the fglrx drivers, if you fail, come back here and we'll see. | 15:48 |
