opessoasary: only windows distribution with this "all in one" have no mention to key to enable/disable wifi00:00
opessoasary: And, I try yours commands, no results00:02
saryopessoa: "All in one" what exactly is the model of the Desktop!00:02
saryopessoa: try sudo rfkill unblock 0 , sudo rfkill list00:02

saryopessoa: thanks. is it one of these: http://www.positivobgh.com/products/Faqs00:06
[n0mad]it has enable wifi in the faq00:07
sary[n0mad]: it sure does .. thank you for pointin' that out :)00:09
saryopessoa: try ress the keys “Fn + F11” or “Fn + F2” simultaneously in both cases. The Wi-Fi card will turn off by pressing00:09
sarythe same keys.00:09
opessoasary: what is the Fn key? (windows keyboard)00:10
saryopessoa: it's the Windows key that have windows logo on it.00:11
oerheksanother reason could be windows/fastboot keeping wifi/usb hostage..00:11
opessoasary: nothing00:12
opessoaoerheks: how can I find it fastboot on windows 7?00:12
saryoerheks: Good point.00:13
oerheksor look in dmesg, for missing firmware? comes in mind too00:13
oerheksnot sure windows 7 got fastboot, that was introduced with 8?00:14
saryopessoa: press Fn + F11 then run sudo rfkill list , if harware block is No , then you might restart the network manager.00:15

donavan01im looking to install some variant of ubuntu in a virtual machine for the perposes of programming in Java and maybe C  and python will Lubuntu be a good option of are there limitation that I should be aware of that would make one of the others a better choice00:18
naccdonavan01: are you only programming in your VM? just install ubuntu server (why do you need a desktop?)00:19
oerheksopessoa, you have the driver, but not the closed firmware, see this post https://askubuntu.com/questions/836207/how-to-install-drivers-for-tp-link-tl-wn722n-on-16-0400:21
oerhekswget http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/main/l/linux-firmware/linux-firmware_1.161_all.deb00:21

donavan01nacc honesly im not super good with the command line yet and I could use the gui as kind of a crutch at times till I get better00:21
opessoaoerheks: ok, and now?00:22
oerheksif you are on 16.04 or up, systemctl restart NetworkManager.service00:23
oerhekswith sudo perhaps ..00:23
naccdonavan01: ok00:23
oerheksthen the mod list will give firmware, i hope00:23

yorwosi had to reinstall ubuntu. now my firewire audiocard shows in sound properties in taskbar being the default soundcard , but qjackctl fails to start using it. i tried adding "pasuspender -- jackd" in server path to suspend pulseaudio but this didnt fix the problem. any ideas or am i forced to reinstall with the sound card disconnected so its not used by system and i can use it with jack ? fresh ub.studio 16.04 install00:27

geniiopessoa: Did you try the FN-plus-hotkey combination or dedicated button which turns the wifi on and off and then look at rfkill output again?00:37
opessoagenii: I have try all "windows" F1..f12 nothing change00:38
sarythe keys are “Fn + F11” or “Fn + F2 .. try doing it right.00:39
saryyou need to check with rfkill list after pressing one of the keys combination , you night need to restart network manger .00:41
geniiopessoa: Not random FN+whatever keys. Look up the key combination which enables and disables the wifi card, either in your user manual that came with the machine, or look it up online.00:41
genii..and when I write FN, yes, the key usually has FN written on it00:42
opessoasary: I always did that! Nothing change!00:44
opessoagenii: No, does not have Fn button00:44
opessoagenii: It's a windows normal abnt2 keyboard00:45
oerheksgenii, if you can ead back, i tried to make opessoa install the firmware, as the ath9 seems to have none.. and it failed00:47
oerheksc/read00:47

geniiSo then a PC00:49
geniiopessoa: An Acer?00:49

opessoapositivo00:50
geniiopessoa: "depending on your model, fn+f11 or fn+f12"00:51
geniiSo if it's the keyboard it came with, there must be some Fn key00:51
oerheksgenii, see the paste: firmware=N/A00:51
geniioerheks: I have the same card and it works fine with no firmware00:52
genii( on Xenial )00:52
minimecopessoa: Have you tried to play around with options of the ath9c driver?00:53
minimecopessoa: There seems to be one interesting option "nohwcrypt=1". Maybe test that... 'sudo modprobe -r ath9k', then 'sudo modprobe ath9k nohwcrypt=1'00:54
oerheksthere is a paste with suggestions yes http://paste.ubuntu.com/25064693/00:54
opessoaminimec: its no more in rfkill list00:54
opessoawith "sudo modprobe -r ath9k"00:55
oerheks-r remove, that is good00:55
opessoaok remove00:55
opessoa:P00:55
opessoasudo modprobe ath9k nohwcrypt=1 - its back on rfkill list00:56
opessoaminimec: I dont know how to play around with options :P00:57
wedgiethis likely belongs in a different channel (please let me know which one) but what is the equivilent of ~/.ssh/config on the windows linux subsystem?00:59
Sleakerwedgie: it shouldn't be any different the structure is the same01:00
minimecopessoa: Now that it's back in rfkill list, can you unblock it now? "sudo rfkill unblock wifi"...01:00
opessoaminimec: no results01:00
wedgieSleaker: i guess my question is ore about where I have to place that file in order for the ssh client to reference it01:00
Sleakerin ~/.ssh/config01:01
minimecopessoa: Still... Do "echo "options ath9k nohwcrypt=1" | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf" once in a console and then do 'cat /etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf' to check the content of the file we just created. Then reboot.01:01
wedgiehmm. Didn't seem to respect it. Maybe i need to fiddle with the permisions or something01:01
Sleakerubuntu on windows still has the directory structure for users, you just also have a pre-mounted drive share in /mnt/ for the windows system.01:01
Sleakereverything else should behave the same, especially something like ssh01:02
Sleakerknown_hosts shows up properly in there.01:03
minimecopessoa: Ok. I found a file with all available options for the ath9k driver... There are a lot of them... https://github.com/reynhout/chrx/blob/master/dist/etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf01:06
opessoaminimec: cat /etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf returns me :options ath9k nohwcrypt=101:07
opessoaoptions ath9k nohwcrypt=101:07
opessoatwice01:08
opessoaso, I'm dummie what the options I can use?01:09
minimecopessoa: Good. So the file we created is the 'playground' to test all the options of the driver. You can add an dremove options there and they will be loaded on boot. Now reboot for a try. Eventhough the line exists twice, that should not be a problem. The option is jjust set twice...01:09
wedgieSleaker: ah, silly me. I assumed that the directory i landed in when i typed "bash" was my home dir. Turns out that this is not the case. Thanks :)01:09

kristhiankenrin yes i installed ubuntu-restricted-extras02:28
kristhianand yes it is a vcd02:28
oerheksoke, then you miss the vcd/dvd-decryption codec for playback, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/PlayingDVDs02:29

EleanorEllisI am configuring Privoxy, a privacy server, and I need to setup a temporary directory and the documentation says that this should be a directory that only Privoxy (and trusted users) can access. How can I do that? I don't know how to limit directory access to a process. The other weird thing is that I can't find a task running which contains the string "privoxy" even though I know the server is running.02:46
yorwosum i reinstalled ubuntu formatting the partitions /tmp /usr /var /boot / , and keeping only /home unformatted (and swap). after installing chrome to my great suprise all settings were there as if i never formatted (firefox also).  i assume all program leftovers broken links etc. i had before are gone now , but can keeping an old /home partition be dangerous concerning the security of the system ?03:02
yorwosalso before i formatted the system used greek language, i installed in english now without prompting for greek language anywhere, but pressing alt+shift switches to greek language ? is this normal ? i didnt install anything about it03:04
naccyorwos: if you kept /home from your old install, all your user's settings are still present03:07
naccyorwos: i don't know what you mean about security of the system -- you had root (enough to install it in the first place), not sure why security is relevant?03:07
yorwosjust curious03:08
naccyorwos: the greek stuff is probably also per-user, and something knows about your language options03:08
yorwosaaaw i see03:08
naccyorwos: you removed global (/etc/) settings, but no per-user ones, so all the per-user ones (which are most of what a desktop user sees with things like firefox) are still going to be present03:09
yorwosi see , i see , when i did it i thought i would only save my files like eg.downloads folder didnt think id save so much of it like my settings etc03:11

l1Ll1Ll1Lpankaj, https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SettingUpNFSHowTo03:31
pankajl1Ll1Ll1L: OK. But it seems to be very long and complecated.03:33
l1Ll1Ll1Lwell you can always pay someone to set it up for you I guess...03:33
kenrinIt is only four steps03:35
kenrinAll the other stuff is optional for security and automount03:37
l1Ll1Ll1Ltbf kenrin you probably shouldn't skip security related steps, and pankaj will probably want automount. But it still isn't that long of a wiki page03:40
pankajl1Ll1Ll1L: L03:40
pankajl1Ll1Ll1L: OK.03:40
l1Ll1Ll1Lget you hands off my L's :-X03:41
pankajl1Ll1Ll1L: Why your name is full of l's and complecated?03:41
l1Ll1Ll1Lbecause that's the way I like it, of course03:41

lotuspsychjeCedara: the one working best for your card04:46
lotuspsychjeCedara: i suggest testing them both04:47
lotuspsychjeCedara: if both doesnt fit your needs, there is also an ubuntu graphics drivers ppa you can add for latest drivers04:47
CedaraI have a little booklet from a German computer zine, there it says, use the higher numbered one, and it should say updates for the numbering at the end, which it doesn't here.04:49

mcdadoHi, i’ve been told by someone that he was able to use a vulnerability and enter my machine, basically i have bind9 running on public port 53, how do i stop that? I don’t need the server to perform as dns server08:49
mcdadoit’s strange though, it’s 14.04.5 with automatic security updates08:50
l1Ll1Ll1Ltry sudo apt-get remove bing9 ?08:50
l1Ll1Ll1L*bind908:50
blackflowmcdado: it's not strange. security updates come days, weeks, months after the vuln has been found. security is not a single switch, it's a multi-layer solution.08:51
mcdadothen my server doesn’t resolve dns queries to canonical updates repos08:51
blackflowmcdado: resolve to itself or?08:52
blackflowusing bind as local resolver?08:52
mcdadoi don’t know it’s a setting that plesk did08:52
mcdadoi’m quite frustrated by the need of plesk already08:52
blackflowofftopic here, tho'08:52
mcdadoyeah08:52
mcdadoso08:52
mcdadoi sincerely have no idea how it been configured08:53
mcdadolocal resolver?08:53
blackflowplesk is offtopic here08:53
mcdadoyes, so the problem is that the dns configuration is something i never done on a server08:54
mcdadoso i don’t know how it works or what i’m supposed to08:54
mcdadodo08:54
mcdadoi guess if i remove bind, then how do i configure dns?08:55
blackflowyou set up the ip address of a resolver in /etc/resolv.conf08:55
mcdadoless /etc/resolv.conf08:56
mcdado# Dynamic resolv.conf(5) file for glibc resolver(3) generated by resolvconf(8)08:56
mcdado#     DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE BY HAND -- YOUR CHANGES WILL BE OVERWRITTEN08:56
blackflowon ubuntu at least, no idea what plesk did to your system, that's why I've been saying it's offtopic here08:56
blackflowmcdado: right so two things, is this a server? do you have a static ip or dhcp?08:56
mcdadostatic08:56
mcdadoserver yes08:57
mcdadopublic facing website08:57
blackflowis it hosted? by a company?08:57
mcdadoVPS on OVH08:57
mcdadofull root control08:57
blackflowmcdado: do you have something like a dns-nameservers option in your network interface config file?08:59
mcdadoi’ll check08:59
blackflow/etc/network/interfaces  or interfaces.d/...08:59
mcdadodoesn’t seem so09:00
mcdadointerfaces.d is empty09:00
blackflowwhere do you set up the static ip then?09:00
mcdadoit’s in /etc/network/interfaces file09:01
blackflowah, interfaces.d is empty, but interfaces isnt? the network config is there, right?09:01
mcdadothere are two iface09:01
mcdadoinet and inet609:01
mcdadostatics09:01
blackflowlo and something like ens3 ?09:01
mcdadoauto lo09:02
mcdadoiface lo inet loopback09:02
mcdadoauto eth009:02
mcdadoiface eth0 inet static09:02
blackflowan eth0.09:02
mcdadoand various ips09:02
blackflowoh yes you said it's 14.0409:02
mcdadoyes09:02
blackflowok, pastebin /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/head09:02
mcdadoit’s empty09:02
mcdado# Dynamic resolv.conf(5) file for glibc resolver(3) generated by resolvconf(8)09:02
mcdado#     DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE BY HAND -- YOUR CHANGES WILL BE OVERWRITTEN09:02
blackflowAlright. now, you have two options. One, uninstall resolvconf and set up /etc/resolv.conf manually, or two, keep resolvconf, and then set up /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/head09:03
blackfloweither way, the setup is adding a "nameserver" entry. like   nameserver 192.168.1.1,   replace with actual resolver IP09:03
mcdadookay, i could use like 8.8.8.8 ?09:04
mcdadoor better something else?09:04
blackflowmcdado: that should be ok, and you can also use OVH's own resolvers09:05
blackflowso add "nameserver 8.8.8.8" line, without quotes, in the file of your choice below the comments09:07
mcdadookay i’ll give it a try09:07

AleksaGuys, yesterday my graphics in game Dota went crazy and I restarted the PC using the restart button on case. That has caused me lots of trouble. I've reinstalled Ubuntu, but still cannot get it to load. It fails to load, saying "amdgpu: Invalid PCI ROM header signature: expecting 0xaa55, got 0xffff16:43

AleksaI've managed to get X. I entered recovery mode and chose the first option, so I have X now, but the graphics sucks, it's low resolution. Help.16:45

Lopeif i install ubuntu 17 will my system be less stable?23:43
LopeI prefer newer packages23:43
LopeSo I think 17 would probably suit me.23:43
LopeHowever being forced to reinstall is a hassle.23:44
Lope(at the end of support)23:44
Ben64you can upgrade23:44
naccLope: do you mean 17.04? 17 is not a release version23:44
Lopenacc: yeah23:44
naccLope: you can upgrade from each release to the next (you have to, really, or you're in EOL life)23:44
naccLope: why do you 'prefer' newer packages?23:44
Lopenacc: old packages suck sometimes23:45
Lopenacc: for instance inkscape, the version on ubuntu 14.04 can't handle svgs that have been minified23:45
Lopepinta was all buggy23:45
Lopevirt-manager lacks snapshot ability23:45
SergioEDuran1specialy the old GNOME, the actual versions of it are slick and smooth23:46
Lopelots of issues in many packages23:46
naccLope: did you file bugs?23:46
naccLope: 14.04 vs. 16.04 is a lot different than 16.04 vs. 17.04, IMO23:46
Lopenacc: i didn't file bugs23:46
Lopei just installed a PPA and wham bam, thank you maam23:47
naccLope: hard for things to get better without knowing what to fix.23:47
Lopeif i have trouble on old software I usually just go straight for the newest version23:47
Lopecos for example I don't want a bleeding edge system actually, I want it to be reliable23:47
Lopebut I don't mind my inkscape being bleeding edge.23:47
naccLope: then you probably don't want the newest versions.23:47
LopeI like individual software packages that I don't mind crashing to be the latest23:48
naccLope: inkscape is also snapped, it seems23:48
Lopebut the overall system I want to be stable23:48
naccLope: and that is a far more sane way than upgrading your whole system to get the latest of a particular version23:48
naccor to use PPAs (imo), as they are unsupported23:48
Lopeyeah so 16.04 is a decent choice23:48

Lopenacc: I'm not familiar with all the version numberings23:53
Ben64shadow1809: well yeah, but you'd need to disable the igpu and run off the nvidia only23:53
Lopeso basically 17.04 will have an easy upgrade to 17.1023:54
Lopeand then some time later another upgrade will be available?23:54
shadow1809I did that. Didn't work.23:54
Ben64it will work23:54
shadow1809It'd made the artifacts again. I am 100% sure my GPU is not faulty.23:54
shadow1809I did try running it off the nvidia only Ben :P23:55
Ben64right but that's step one23:55
shadow1809I am on Ubuntu now. It booted. But I can only manage to use my iGPU. So my next question is how to get the GPU to work?23:55
Ben64disable the igpu and use nvidia23:55
naccLope: basically even-yeared april releases are LTS, everything else is non-LTS. LTS have 5 years of support, non-LTS have 9 months. LTS -> LTS is supported and LTS -> next non-LTS -> next non-LTS... is supported23:56
shadow1809Erhmm sorry for being thick headed on this one. I am not quite sure what you mean. This is the first time im touching this OS. You mean install Nvidia on Ubuntu then disable iGPU and re-enable the GPU In the bios again?23:56
Ben64shadow1809: what? i mean disable the igpu, it will only cause problems, then boot and we can solve whatever issues arise23:57
LopeI just installed ubuntu. I asked it to setup an encrypted root on a new lvm volume I created, and boot off another lvm volume I created and formatted as ext2.23:57
shadow1809Problem is. It will not boot that way. It will artiface. the picture I showed earlier?23:57
LopeIt gave me the grub screen, now it's on initramfs/busybox23:57
Ben64shadow1809: and that can be solved! this is step one, holy crap23:57
LopeI'm guessing this is not normal.23:58
Lopelast time I installed ubuntu with an encrypted root I put it straignt onto a partition and it booted up with a DE23:58
shadow1809Sorry... alright how do we solve that?.. Step 1. Disable iGPU 2. Boot with GPU on Ubuntu. Step 3. ?23:58
Lope(diff computer)23:58
Ben64shadow1809: do that first, hit "try ubuntu" on the boot screen23:58
shadow1809I tried.. Black screened completely :/23:59
Ben64ok do it again23:59
shadow1809That was with the iGPU disabled & only the GPU on.23:59
shadow1809Alright...23:59
shadow1809Brb lol23:59
Lopeat the initramfs prompt if I type uname -a I see the kernel is booted. But it obviously couldn't mount the root.23:59
Ben64shadow1809: do you have the monitor plugged into the nvidia?23:59
