markus-k | Hi, I just noticed the download buttons on this page are broken: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/GetLubuntu#Torrent | 15:42 |
LioneLL | The requested URL /lubuntu/releases/yakkety/release/lubuntu-16.10-desktop-i386.iso.torrent was not found on this server. | 16:15 |
LioneLL | should be Zesty | 16:20 |

rko | Hi, has anyone succeeded in starting Lubuntu into mode 3? In my case, adding "3" at the end of the linux boot command doesn't work for reason. I suppose that's because lightdm service is enabled in mode 3. So if I delete S01lightdm from /etc/rc3.d directory, it wouldn't boop up and hangs. I wonder if I have to manually startup tty console service somehow. | 18:50 |
genii | rko: All runlevels from 2 to 5 are runlevel 2 | 18:54 |
genii | !runlevels | 18:54 |
ubottu | In Ubuntu all runlevels except 0,1 and 6 are by default equal. Also keep in mind that Ubuntu now uses !Upstart instead of System V init so there is normally no /etc/inittab. | 18:54 |
* genii makes a note to update the factoid sometime | 18:55 | |
wxl | aaaand actually we don't use upstart, we use systemd | 18:56 |
wxl | !systemd | 18:56 |
ubottu | systemd is the default init system for Ubuntu 15.04 onwards. For information on transitioning from upstart to systemd, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SystemdForUpstartUsers For a guide to basic service management with systemd, see https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-use-systemctl-to-manage-systemd-services-and-units | 18:56 |
wxl | harumph that looks like it needs to be updated too | 18:56 |
rko | I see. I am trying to start the kernel with a console mode instaed of a graphical mode. In Ubuntu, if I put "3" at the end of the kernel boot line, it works. But it doesn't work in Lubuntu, and I'm not sure how to do this.. | 18:57 |

Guest37110 | need help with my software program for it doesn't start | 23:19 |
wxl | which program? and how are you trying to start it? | 23:19 |
Guest37110 | lubuntu and trying to start from the icon | 23:20 |
wxl | you're trying to start lubuntu? or you're trying to start a program in lubuntu? which icon? | 23:20 |
Guest37110 | a program in lubuntu for i can get software | 23:21 |
wxl | you're trying to install software? | 23:21 |
Guest37110 | yes like games | 23:21 |
wxl | and what happens when you click the icon? | 23:21 |
Guest37110 | nothing | 23:22 |
wxl | how did you install lubuntu? | 23:22 |
Guest37110 | from a ubs stick | 23:22 |
wxl | did you put the iso on the stick yourself? | 23:23 |
Guest37110 | yes and then i installed it on my computer as the os | 23:23 |
wxl | did you check the hashes of the iso before putting it on the stick? | 23:23 |
Guest37110 | yes everthing went well | 23:24 |
wxl | i'm not asking if the install appeared to proceed correctly | 23:24 |
wxl | i'm asking if you checked the hash of the iso file against a published hash | 23:25 |
Guest37110 | ok then i do not know for im new to this but it did work at the beginning now it does not | 23:26 |
wxl | well, here's something you need to know: | 23:26 |
wxl | many strange problems occur of a bad install | 23:26 |
wxl | a bad install is not incidated by whether or not the installer finished the install | 23:27 |
wxl | it can be a single bit that is wrong. one 0 that's a 1 or vice versa. | 23:27 |
wxl | the steps to avoid this are: | 23:27 |
wxl | 1. download the iso | 23:27 |
wxl | 2. check the hash of the iso | 23:27 |
wxl | 3. assuming #2 is good, bit by bit copy to the installation media | 23:27 |
wxl | 4. check the media upon boot to ensure the copy is correct | 23:28 |
wxl | if you do all that, anything else is generally going to be reproducible | 23:28 |
Guest37110 | ok thanks i will reinstall | 23:28 |
wxl | unless | 23:28 |
wxl | you have bad hardware | 23:28 |
wxl | can you click on anything? | 23:28 |
