skipmo_For quite a while I kann make no updates, because Discover always displays the message:04:30
skipmo_Error while installing package: trying to overwrite '/usr/share/kservices5/kipiplugin_imageshack.desktop', which is also in package kipi-plugins5-common4. I'm running Kubuntu 16.04 and meanweanwhile there  are more than 300 updates waiting. Can somebody help me with this problem, i.e. telling me, where to get the "missing link"?04:39
IrcsomeBot<DGUERRERO> @skipmo_, You could try run this command from terminal: … "sudo apt-get -f install" … Without the " "05:42
Compuhi05:57
Compui cant seem to find the minimum recommended specs for kubuntu 16.04.205:57
Compumy friend has an old dell latitude d630 with 2 GB of RAM that i'm wondering if this will run ok on05:59
Compuit used to run ubuntu 14.04 but the OS got too bloated after him using it for so long and i was looking for something still pretty user friendly (ie not lubuntu) but that wont slow down a ton06:00
Computried ubuntu mate but it just kept locking up on login, tried ubuntu gnome and that worked fine until i noticed that it was using nearly all the RAM on a clean boot06:01

lordievaderGood morning06:08
javdrherhi all, I have a dell XPS 15 laptop. yesterday I got a reboot system to complete updates icon, i shut the laptop down, this morning it gives a black screen after i type my password06:33
javdrheri cant even ctrl alt f1 past that point06:33
javdrheri have to button-reboot after that. if I press ctrl alt f1 at the login screen I can access the terminal. ran apt upgrade, checked the log files but nothing helpful, deleted .cache, .config, .kde, reinstalled sddm06:34
javdrherI have an nvidia card but never did anything to its drivers (i.e. kept it at the installation defaults)06:35
javdrheri'm slowly starting to panic as I have zero ideas left where to go from here other than reinstalling which is, given upcoming deadlines, about the worst possible option :(06:36
lordievader!nomodeset06:45
ubottuA common kernel (boot)parameter is nomodeset, which is needed for some graphic cards that otherwise boot into a black screen or show corrupted splash screen. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 on how to use this parameter06:45
lordievaderYou could try ^06:45
javdrherisnt that mostly for not even having a login screen?06:45
lordievaderSeems I misunderstood the problem. Can you get to a tty if you do not login?06:46
javdrheryes06:46
lordievaderYou can login there?06:46
javdrheryes06:46

javdrherhttps://askubuntu.com/questions/939594/kubuntu-16-04-lts-apt-get-upgrade-causes-issues-with-login-and-black-desktop-wi06:47
javdrherI found this, my Xauthority has permission 60006:47
lordievaderOkay, anything in the /var/log/Xorg.0.log?06:47
javdrherthat might be a problem?06:47
javdrherno errors in Xorg.0.log. I'm guessing they might appear after I login06:48
javdrherbut then I cant reach it anymore06:48
lordievaderYou could rename the .Xauthority file, yes. Might help.06:49
lordievaderI'd also add the backports.06:49
javdrheri dothat all at once or just try with a renamed authority first06:49
lordievaderOne thing at a time ;)06:51
javdrherk, here we go lets see what happens06:51
javdrhergot a KDE loading message there... :D06:52
lordievaderThat is progress :)06:53
javdrherI think its solved06:53
javdrherwell all my settings are fubar of course as I deleted those folders06:53
javdrherinternet etc seems to work though, unlike in that link06:53
javdrheronly rebooting seems broken,... lol06:55
IrcsomeBotavtrkrb was removed by: avtrkrb06:56
javdrherthis update did some odd stuff I must say06:56
lordievaderSeems that way, yes.07:00
javdrherthanks anyway. you'd still recommend me to go with the backports?07:08
javdrheror just be happy its running again ^^07:08
lordievaderIf it is not too much trouble, I'd upgrade to backports, yes.07:17
javdrherinterestingly, no updates available on backports07:35
lordievaderHmm, perhaps it was enabled prior?07:47
javdrhercould be yes07:49

MrokiiHello. I want to format a USB stick that has an old Kubuntu 17.04 installation, but I can't find an option for that. I've tried KDE Partition manager, but any options for the partitions on the stick are greyed out. Even though the stick is unmounted.09:06
MrokiiI *might* be able to just create a new partition table for the stick, as this option is available.09:07
IrcsomeBot<Sav22999> Good morning. Today I have format my laptop, but now Kubuntu doesn't find update, instead before I format it, there are updates. For example, before I format my laptop, Discover was updated, but now it isn't.09:25
IrcsomeBot<Sav22999> It isn't updated because the interface of Discover is a bit changed, so I can see that it is the "old" interface.09:26
IrcsomeBot<Sav22999> Please. Reply. Thanks :)09:26
IrcsomeBot<Valoriez> @Sav22999 what do you mean by "format"?09:28
IrcsomeBot<Valoriez> did you update/upgrade, or what?09:28
IrcsomeBot<Sav22999> I've insert my LiveUSB and I install again Kubuntu. No data remain. So it's a empty installation.09:29
IrcsomeBot<Sav22999> Formatted*09:30
IrcsomeBot<Sav22999> I've inserted my liveusb and I've installed again kubuntu*09:31
IrcsomeBot<Valoriez> if you created a new install without saving your old stuff, I'm afraid it is gone09:49
IrcsomeBot<Sav22999> @Valoriez  Of course. But I would know why doesn't Kubuntu update Discover (Kubuntu software center)?10:23
IrcsomeBot<Valoriez> it will be updated when the maintainer updates it10:25
IrcsomeBot<Valoriez> and right now I happen to be in a meeting where I am sitting next to him!10:25

oost_Nvidia was the preferred choice for video card right? Is this still the case?12:09
BluesKajoost_, mostly yes, but amd/radeon has improved somewhat12:16
BluesKajnvidia hi-end cards can be difficult tho..some of the upper end drivers aren't quite as stable12:18
BluesKajlike the 381, 38412:18
javdrherabout that, how is the installation these days? I used to avoid it some versions ago because disabling nouveau wasn't straightforward12:18
oost_thnx (i was watching a youtube vid where nvidia was made bad by an important id)12:19
BluesKajjavdrher, nouveau is now disabled by default during the nvidia diver install process12:19
javdrheri assume the one in the repos12:19
javdrheror the proprietary file from their website?12:20
BluesKajthe  website drivers aren't supported as well, they usually break after the first kernel module upgrade12:20
javdrherright12:21
oost_BluesKaj: but best choice still being intel?12:22
BluesKajthe website is a good reference for the driver number for your nvidia gpu tho, but that's about all12:23
BluesKajoost_, not really, intel and nvidia are on par IME12:24
javdrherk, when my deadlines are over im gonna try12:24
javdrherI have an nvidia in my laptop, it would be great for all the tensorflow I do these days but I was afraid to touch the display drivers12:25
BluesKajintel are usually onboard gpus tho...nvidia has many PCI gpus available12:25
javdrherwell i dont care for server systems etc there i install it straight away12:25
javdrheron my laptop I cant have to break after an update :/12:26
BluesKajmost laptops have the stable version gpus anyway , the higher end nvidias are very rare in laptops12:27
javdrherits a 960 or something12:27
javdrherbut in the past I always found myself installing website drivers because the repo packages were outdated and clashed with cuda12:28
javdrherso i went with the website drivers and then i found myself ready to present something like a thesis and X no longer starting :p12:28
BluesKajwebsite drivers aren't always the fix , they might work or not ...the 'buntu supported drivers usually work better in the long run12:34
javdrheryep, its just that a few years ago the supported drivers weren't always the right choice to stay on track with all the new stuff NVIDIA was releasing into CUDA and compatibility with libraries such as tensorflow12:35
javdrherlast year we bought gtx 1080's at work and by the time they were delivered the required cuda toolkit wasnt out yet12:35
javdrherits the conflict I have constantly. I have one laptop, it has to be stable for the business of things, yet my job requires me to drag stuff in which can be highly experimental :(12:36

gd1979Hey.  How well does Kubuntu 17.04 support Macbook Pro early 201515:11
gd1979with particular reference to temp sensor / fans15:12
geniiBest way is to try it out with livecd/liveusb and test everything first there15:12
gd1979I've already installed onto machine, but have not heard fans come on as yet15:13

JonelethIrenicusive tried changing the values in multiple places, but it isn't helping17:01

BluesKajJonelethIrenicus, ask in #ubuntu ..this is Kubuntu support17:12
=== jayhunold is now known as jhunold
JonelethIrenicusBluesKaj: i think it is easier in normal Ubuntu because it has the controls setup for multiple application types where Kubuntu's scaling feature only seems to apply to KDE/Qt applications17:39
