masterdoom1001is anyone on?06:08
lordievaderGood morning06:37
hegemon8hello everyone08:29
hegemon8just wondering as i'm on kubu 17.04 with some 3rd party repos and tweaks from forums to make my nvidia  based laptop being able to dim screen and start with kubu logo in graphical mode. Now i wonder how i'd end up upgrading to 17.10... Anyone did upgrade yet? If so... how did it go?08:32
acheronuka few people are running it and most have had no big issues. running a development does entail some bugs being hit and then resolved that you clearly would never see running a released version08:40
acheronukand with KDE packages, being uploaded in sets of many packages (plasma, apps, frameworks) you can sometimes have issues where part of a group upload gets stuck in the -proposed repo/pocket for a while, and updates are incomplete and may cause issues08:42
hegemon8i am aware its pre-release, but being spoiled for last releases with upgrade to them, but there are some changes in this that i ask... normally i'd preinstall, as its fairly fresh 17.04 install, but plenty sofy from application store and settings that i just don't want to redo08:43
acheronukwe are just about to land Qt 5.9.1 in Artful, so if you are considering it, you may be best waiting until that is in and any issues with that fixed08:45
hegemon8sucks to have one machine home, cause would love to help in testing, and vm, well you know...08:47
acheronukeven in a VM helps :)08:49
hegemon8yes, i guess, but then reporting a 'bug' that turns out to be vm specific....08:50
hegemon8and i'm a natural tester - curious - i do break things in the name of rule: Gee, what this button do?... :)08:51
acheronukhegemon8: some of us on #kubuntu-devel are running artful on real hardware, so if you find something you are not sure is MV specific or not, then you can ask us to check09:01
acheronukplus bugs in a VM are valid ones IMO. there is much use of virtualisation and we would want things to 'work' on that is possible09:03
hegemon8i'm on 4 channels on kubuntu, not typing there cause well, far from being dev, but i do look whats going on there at times09:10
hegemon8thank You for ideas and suggestions, need to go now so hope see yous later09:11

john85hi :)11:47
BluesKajHi all11:50
john85hi :)11:52
john85sorry was googling something11:53
BluesKajHi john8511:53
john85hows u?11:53
BluesKajgod, and you?11:53
BluesKajgood even :-)11:53
john85ok thanks11:53
john85hi gery11:54
john85i think i already know the answer to this question,  but just wanted to check11:55
john85fonts are completely independant of apps like open office and Libre office right?  So installing open office wont give me any more fonts than i already have11:56
BluesKajjohn85, not sure, since I don't use the office suite11:58
john85oh ok...im thinking of installing open office anyway,  since it is what I have always used up to now12:00
john85just trying to find out how at the moment12:01
oost_john85: i read somewhere that libreoffice is based on openoffice.org and that is openoffice.org is dead now.12:01
nmrp3hi - I've just turned my ubuntu box on after a holiday, and it went to the login screen but won't let me type anything12:03
BluesKajthink you're correct oost_ libreoffice is default  afaik12:03
nmrp3it registers the capslock key toggling, but no text appears in the password box12:03
BluesKajdoes ctl+alt +F2 drop you to a shell login ?12:04
BluesKajnmrp3,^12:04
nmrp3BluesKaj: yes it does12:05
john85ye the problem is i'm lacking all the fonts I used to create my documents and it has messed up some of the formatting too12:05
john85mainly arial and calibri12:06
BluesKajrun your normal updates and upgrades with apt , then sudo systemctl enable sddm (assume you use that), then sudo systemctl start sddm12:06
BluesKajnmrp3,^12:07
BluesKajnmrp3, you may have to reboot12:08
oquidavehello, do i need a raid setup if am running on a vps from one of the cloud providers?12:08
nmrp3BluesKaj: I got a lot of grumbling from systemctl about  unit files12:08
BluesKajjohn85, have you checked the system-settings>fonts ...I have to ask the obvious12:09
nmrp3how would i quickly check which display  manager / login I'm using?12:09
nmrp3ok, ps aux says sddm12:09
BluesKajnmrp3, but you still have a shell prompt ?12:09
john85BluesKaj,  yes and I even downloaded a fonts package12:10
nmrp3BluesKaj: I'm still in the shell, yes - "The unit files have no installation config..."12:10
nmrp3ok, this did something: sudo service sddm restart12:11
nmrp3but no change in behaviour - the login manger is tracking if capslock is on, but isn't letting me type into the password box or displaying a mouse pointer12:11
BluesKajnmrp3, sounds like the xserver has a problem12:12
BluesKajdid you updaye and upgrade with apt ?12:13
BluesKajupdate12:13
nmrp3yes, I think I did, and I think it included both a kernal and an xserver update12:13
nmrp3but I wasn't really paying attention as I was rushing off to holiday - I updated before closing down a few days ago12:14
john85gotta run...work beckons12:14
john85speak soon12:14
BluesKajok try again, nmrp312:14
nmrp3no packages to update, same symptom12:16
BluesKajnmrp3, if a reboot doesn't help then maybe the nomodeset procedure might work12:19
nmrp3oh it seems to be something to do with multi-monitor support12:19
nmrp3it's working if I boot with just one monitor plugged in12:20
BluesKajaha12:20
nmrp3but is failing in various ways if I have more than one12:20
nmrp3so right now I have two display port monitors on, and both are black for the login12:20
nmrp3but ctl+alt+f2 works12:20
BluesKajnmrp3, I have no expertise with multimonitor setups ..you probly know more than I do about it12:22
nmrp3OK, so it seems like the multi monitor support is really broken for my system with this x :(12:23
BluesKajnmrp3, which gpu ?12:24
nmrp3titan x12:24
BluesKajthat's rare card, I'm surprised there's a driver for it , or are you using the LInux driver from nvidia's site. if so then the kernel upgrade probly broke the driver12:30
BluesKajthere's a lack of current kernel module support for nvidia's site drivers afaik12:33
BluesKajbbbiab12:38
oost_What four or five things to keep in mind when start reading source code?12:46
oost_Is there any advise for something like this?12:48
lordievaderoost_: Try explaining the code to a rubber duck, if the duck understands, you understand the code.13:29
lordievaderAlso keep in mind that each programmer has their own style and preferences.13:30
oost_thnx lordievader. I do not know where to begin with reading files though.13:43
lordievaderoost_: Unless you have a specific goal, reading random source code is going to be a pain.13:45
oost_lordievader: cannot really fit myself into a goal here. Think i will give myself paracetamol or something.13:54
lordievaderWhy do you want to read source code, then?13:55
oost_lordievader: to understand interesting things.13:57
lordievaderDo you have experience in programming?13:58
oost_no, i can only see the logic of things.14:00
javdrhereven as an experienced programmer, diving into a large codebase takes a lot of time to get into the flow14:03
javdrhereven with good documentation available14:03
lordievaderAnd because of that, you first want to have some experience with programming before you start reading (other people's) source code.14:06

sdfsdfcan I plug in an android phone through usb and get data inside /com folders without root on the phone?14:52
BluesKajsdfsdf, try kdeconnect first of all, it runs over your home network14:55
foxly^ just download kde connect on the play store - super easy to setup14:56
foxlyI had better luck with kdeconnect than I did with just using a cable - kept getting permission errors14:57
sdfsdfkde-connect cli no device specified14:58
BluesKajfoxly, have you tried kdeconnect over the internet ?  Just curious.14:59
foxlyhmmm I have not, didn't even think about that being an option14:59
foxlysdfsdf you have the app installed on the phone (also connected to the wifi the computer is on)?15:00
sdfsdfok now I am paired15:01
sdfsdfnow I need to access \com15:01
sdfsdffrom my computer15:02
foxlyin the kdeconnect icon, you should be able to click and see an icon of a folder to open the device in the file browser15:03
foxlyI think kdec defaults to have file share enabled, if not you might have to look at the settings in the phone app with what you're sharing on the computer15:03
sdfsdfi lost any kind of gui after i paired it15:04
sdfsdffoxly: isn't it mounted somewhere?15:04
sdfsdfBluesKaj: plz help15:05
foxlyit should be mounted like any other device, if it isn't the kdeconnect icon in the system panel should let you just click on it and mount it, same as you do usb drives15:05
sdfsdffoxly: not mounted anywhere I can find15:06
sdfsdfi have no system panel15:06
foxlyand checked the phone app settings to make sure file transfer was enabled on the phone?15:07
sdfsdfwhich file transfer?15:07
foxlywhen you're in the phone app you can click on the device and choose the settings. there's a list of checkboxes on what the device shares like "Notifications, File Transfer, SMS" etc -15:10
foxlyon the desktop you don't have a section like this: https://goo.gl/images/6AgSAE15:10
sdfsdfeverything is turned on in the phone15:10
sdfsdffoxly: i don't have a desktop environment15:11
sdfsdfi'm just running xor15:11
sdfsdfxorg*15:11
foxlyohhhh well that helps haha15:11
foxlygot ya15:11
foxlyit gets mounted just like a normal drive - kubuntu it's /media/usrname/drivename15:11
sdfsdfi want to die15:16
sdfsdfthe folder i was looking for isnt there15:18
foxlyso you got it mounted by the \com folder isn't there?15:19
foxlybut*15:19
sdfsdffoxly: i found the android drive, but the folder i was looking for is missing15:24
sdfsdfI thought it would be in Android\data15:25
sdfsdfthis is a folder i can't see in the phone because i have no root access15:25
BluesKajsdfsdf, can you see the folder on the phone itself, perhaps it's a permissions or incorrect path issue15:25
sdfsdfBluesKaj: no, i can't access the folder in the phone, i got no priviledges to access it15:26
sdfsdfthat's why i wanted to access the drive from my computer15:27
BluesKajsdfsdf, well that won't make any difference15:27
sdfsdfwhat wont15:27
sdfsdfBluesKaj: hey15:30
BluesKajaccessing a folder from a different device won't change permissions15:32
sdfsdfso I did all this for nothing?15:32
sdfsdfi've read i can access it with ADB  but i dont know how to enable ADB15:32
=== toscalix_ is now known as toscalix
BluesKajadb let's you communicate with an android device , but the the device's folder perm issions remain the same ...that's for security reasons15:36
sdfsdfBluesKaj: hey15:37
sdfsdfcan u help or not?15:37
BluesKajheysd15:37
BluesKajsdfsdf,15:37
BluesKajseems you have a very difficult situation , so i guess i can't help unless you find a way to change permissions in that folder15:38
sdfsdfBluesKaj: go to hell then15:40
* BluesKaj shrugs, well good luck with that then15:42
geniiAnother satisfied customer15:42
BluesKajyeah15:43
foxlylmao15:43
foxlywell I guess I'm sorry I missed that15:43
BluesKajit's ok foxly , it's all my fault he doesn't have permissions  :-)15:44

user|84204Hi. Is ''do-dist-upgrade'' the correct way to force upgrade from Kubuntu 16.04 to 17.04?16:48
BluesKajuser|84204,, no and you can't to skip over 16.10 to install 17.04, unless you bacup your data and do a clean 17.04 install16:54
BluesKajbackup your data16:54
user|84204ok. what if I do 16.04 -> 16.10 -> 17.04?16:55
user|84204I'm actually on 16.10 yakkety, my bad16:56
genii16.10 is EOL and not in the regular repositories anymore16:56
geniiYou're better off just waiting until 18.04 and go 16.04->18.04 directly16:57
BluesKajto upgrade to 16.10 you have to tun opff LTS only release upgrades in your package manager. sudo do-release-upgrade is the correct command16:57
user|84204I just realized I'm using 16.10 *not* 16.04 as stated before16:57
user|84204so is 16.10 -> 17.04 possible using do-release-upgrade?16:58
geniiBetter off with a clean install16:58
BluesKajheh16:58
BluesKajuser|84204, yes, but as genii suggests a clean install ia always best16:58
user|84204I see16:59
