cmcmanisok, this is a bit weird. I've got an nvidia card, running the 375 driver, and when I reboot it doesn't recognize my monitor00:36
cmcmanisSpecifically xrandr (for example) says I only have a 'Screen 0: minimum 1024 x 768' (aka the default dumb screen)00:37
cmcmanisIt worked once, when I ran the nvidia install script, my xorg.conf file got replaced (it still looks fine)00:38
cmcmanisbut after reboot, it comes up as the default.00:38
cmcmanisScreen connection is DVI-D to HDMI (running DVI over HDMI) monitor is a Dell 2K monitor00:38
cmcmanisThere is an error in Xorg.<x>.log which says "/dev/dri/card0: failed to set DRM interface version 1.4: permission denied"00:40
cmcmanisTrolling through dmesg it seems that fb0 is being set to the 'efi frame buffer' (which is the onboard Intel graphics?)00:46
cmcmanisI don't recall an option to disable any on board frame buffer, and the boot sequence does come through on my monitor which is only connected to the Nvidia card00:47
cmcmanisAnd then I see a nouveau probe of 0000:01:00.0: which fails (unknown chipset)00:49
cmcmanisAnd I never see the nvidia driver probe, I am presuming I should if it is run.00:50
cmcmanisIf I re-run the nvidia installer, it whines that it is already installed, but I tell it to install anyway01:00
cmcmanisand when I restart the xserver the my xubuntu desktop pops up.01:01
cmcmanisAt 'high' resolution, and xrandr tells me that I'm attached to the DVI-D port at 2560 x 1440.01:01
cmcmanismy best guess is that there is a kernel module dependency somewhere that is killing things.01:06
GridCubecmcmanis, i would remove xorg.conf and try again01:11
GridCubeyou don't really need it anyway01:11
cmcmanisinteresting idea. I've tried re-writing it but not removing it.01:12
COLOUR_BLUEhi!01:13
COLOUR_BLUEhallo?01:14
cmcmanis?01:14
COLOUR_BLUEI want to ask:How many people is using xubuntu?01:14
cmcmaniseveryone01:15
GridCubein this channel?01:15
COLOUR_BLUEno,over the world01:15
GridCubethat's almost impossible to know01:15
cmcmanisyou have to call everyone up and ask.01:16
COLOUR_BLUE.01:16
COLOUR_BLUE:-/01:16
cmcmanisThere isn't any subsystem in xubuntu that 'phones home' to tell who is using it.01:17
cmcmanisFurther what use would the number be? My system for example lets me start xubuntu, ubuntu, or cinammon as choices, how would you mark me down?01:18
COLOUR_BLUE.01:18
cmcmanisSo asking back. Lets say that the answer is "10 people"  how does that help you?01:18
GridCubehttp://netmarketshare.com/report.aspx?qprid=9&qpaf=&qpcustom=Linux&qpcustomb=001:18
GridCubethat's about the closest i think you can get01:19
COLOUR_BLUEthanks01:19
cmcmanisWhat use is that information to you?01:19
GridCubebut thats for all linux not xubuntu01:19
COLOUR_BLUE.01:20
Unit193COLOUR_BLUE: Why do you keep putting periods on a single line by themselves?01:20
GridCubeand that number is really not real anyway, just an educated guess01:20
COLOUR_BLUEcmcmanis: I want to know it to view the popularity of xubuntu01:21
cmcmanisAnd if it is "popular" or "not popular" what will change for you?01:21
COLOUR_BLUEbut i just want to know the number...01:22
COLOUR_BLUENot much to say, I went to see statistics.01:22
cmcmanisThen you are free to pick any number you want, no one will be able to prove you are not correct.01:22
COLOUR_BLUEi am a student in China01:23

Galliard_Hi, can I have support for xubuntu here?19:47
diogenes_if you're lucky19:49
flocculantGalliard_: ask a question - if someone looking can help they will19:49
Galliard_I have a known issue while booting, the bug "error: no symbol table". I'm trying to fix it using boot-repair; the tool now asks me "do you want to have all grub2 files removed from /boot/grub?" I'm a bit scared of mess up my boot and can't boot again after excecution of the tool. What should I do?19:53
Galliard_Sorry for my bad english19:53
Galliard_I think I have this problem because I've installed xubuntu in the same partition of the old OS (Ubuntu 14.04) without wipe it19:56
diogenes_Galliard_, what I would suggest is to back up your data and reinstall BUT this time do a fresh install by removing all the previous installation.19:59
Galliard_So youdon't reccomend me to use boot repair to try to fix the problem?20:00
diogenes_Galliard_, if it doesn't boot then of course you have nothing to lose anyway, you can try it.20:04
Galliard_The problem is that I don't have space on all my devices to backup data, so I was trying to find something to do without wiping the partition20:06
diogenes_well at least when you reinstall the system first thing you have o do is:20:06
diogenes_1. boot into live session from USB or DVD20:07
diogenes_2. find your home partition20:07
diogenes_2. ctrl+h to see the hidden files20:07
diogenes_oh it was 320:07
diogenes_4. remove all the folders that start with a dot (e.g .config)20:08
diogenes_5. reboot and start a new installation20:08
Galliard_Ok thanks for the hint20:08
diogenes_WARNING: remove only those that start with a dot and don't touch the other ones like Pictures, Documents and so on20:09
Galliard_Now, the bug is not blocking m boot, is only a "graphic bug" so I think reinstall the system doesn't worth it20:09
diogenes_Galliard_, also20:10
diogenes_you can try to create a new user just now20:10
diogenes_and see if the problem persists20:10
Galliard_Uh you're right, how i create a new user?20:11
diogenes_Galliard_, https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-create-a-sudo-user-on-ubuntu-quickstart20:13
Galliard_Thanks20:13
Galliard_Thanks a lot for the support @diogenes20:16
diogenes_yw come with feedback20:17
Galliard_where can I give you the feedback?20:17
Galliard_It's the first time form me joining this chat20:18
diogenes_here on hexxhat20:18
