sovereignentityis there any avantage to going 17.04 as opposed to 16.04 on a new install. Are there any new fixes in 17.0420:04
ouroumov_sovereignentity, you can consult the releases notes for each release since 16.04 on the website.20:06
sovereignentityok thanks20:07
ouroumov_https://ubuntu-mate.org/blog/ubuntu-mate-zesty-final-release/20:08
ouroumov_https://ubuntu-mate.org/blog/ubuntu-mate-yakkety-final-release/20:09
ouroumov_sovereignentity, feature wise, I think the biggest bump since 16.04 has been the recent Artful Alpha 2 release.20:12
ouroumov_Sure, a few features have been added in 16.10 and 17.04, but it was mostly GTK+3 migration and bug fixes.20:12
ouroumov_Oh and 17.04 also has a sweet Ubuntu MATE Dark Theme.20:13
Akulii'm using a dark theme on 14.0420:14
sovereignentityI may as well go 17.04 untill next april20:15
sovereignentity17.10 is beta?20:20
ouroumov_Nope, just passed Alpha 220:20
ouroumov_There should be new features coming later in the 17.10 cycle.20:21
ouroumov_Vastly improved Software Boutique, for starters.20:22
sovereignentityI would like to install mate on my Dell xps 13 but it turned out to be a pain in the but20:25
ouroumov_HiDPi?20:26
sovereignentityyes20:26
sovereignentityand the secure boot uefi20:26
ouroumov_Yeah, that's also being worked on by Wimpy.20:26
ouroumov_I guess for now the only workaround for HiDPi to get an usable desktop is to fake an inferior resolution.20:27
ouroumov_Which is kind of sad.20:28
ubuntu-mateOn the Ubuntu-Mate web site, it says that 16.04 LTS is supported till 2019. Linux Mint-Mate 18.2 built from Ubuntu 16.04 says it is supported till 2021. Is this correct, and why is Ubuntu LTS only 3 years?20:41
sovereignentitywell image is burned so see you guys on the other side20:42
ouroumov_It is correct, and this is because the team behind the mate-desktop components is smaller than the canonical workforce.20:43
ubuntu-mateSo would Ubuntu 16.04-Gnome or KDE have longer LTS? Does Mint 18.2 Mate have longer support because Mint has a larger team?20:47
ouroumov_I can't speak for Linux Mint, but the other official ubuntu flavors (Lubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and the new one) are also supported only three years if I recall correctly.20:49
ubuntu-mateOh OK so it must be the Mint team offering 2 more years support on their version of Ubuntu-Mate LTS. Or it is a type error on their web site.20:50
TrekRichhey all20:51
ali1234ubuntu-mate: some people would claim that mint is not supported at all20:53
ali1234but as ouroumov says, different parts of ubuntu are supported for different amounts of time20:54
ali1234mint isn't part of ubuntu so what they do is up to them20:55
ouroumov_<ubuntu-mate> Oh OK so it must be the Mint team offering 2 more years support on their version of Ubuntu-Mate LTS -> The Mint team does not have a version of Ubuntu MATE20:58
ouroumov_<ubuntu-mate> Oh OK so it must be the Mint team offering 2 more years support on their version of Ubuntu-Mate LTS -> The Mint team does not have a version of Ubuntu either20:59
ouroumov_ubuntu-mate, the official Ubuntu derivatives, that can be called "Ubuntu", are listed here: https://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu-flavours21:00
TrekRichdoes it work21:15
TrekRichand will it get updated evantually21:15
TrekRichseems to work great for me!21:15
ubuntu-mateThere does not seem to be very much difference between Ubuntu Mate 16.04.2 and Mint 18.2. Usually I prefer to build on Ubuntu myself instead of having to remove the Minty stuff. Ubuntu-Mate 16.04.2 includes more of the software I prefer. Past experience was that Mint was not as stable as my custom setups, starting with Ubuntu or Debian. I have made many remasters using remastersys and refracta snapshot. Not using Mint though.21:33
