[03:40] hi there [03:40] i have an old desktop pc [03:40] and would like to use that as a web server [03:40] and also use it sometimes for web browsing, watching videos, etc [03:41] so would lubuntu be a good fit for it? [03:41] for both server and home uses [03:41] both uses will be light [03:43] RAM is 4GB [03:43] anyone? [03:45] ? [03:49] Well, Lubuntu is the most lightweight of all Ubuntu flavors, so.. yes. [04:02] does it have all the server functionality of ubuntu? [04:03] servernoob: Yes. [04:04] can i install all ubuntu apps in lubuntu? [04:04] servernoob: Lubuntu is Ubuntu with LXDE, theming, and a bit of polish. [04:04] servernoob: So yes. [04:04] It's literally Ubuntu. :) [04:04] only the theme is different? [04:04] as in only the looks and the user interface? [04:05] under the hood i can use all the server features as well as all applications? [04:07] Absolutely. [04:07] 100% [04:07] servernoob: This is not Linux Mint where they butcher the whole setup. ;) [04:21] oh do you think a 35GB partition would be enough to setup lubuntu on? [04:22] can it read and write ntfs partitions? [04:24] servernoob: 35 GB is absolutely enough [04:24] servernoob: In fact, you could *probably* run it with 7 GB... [04:24] servernoob: And yes, it can read/write NTFS partitions. [04:27] i already have a windows installed on it with multiple ntfs partitions. the installation is quite messed up it is slow but i can't reinstall it because i need the way the apps are setup occasionally. but for most times i would want to use lubuntu, while being able to access files on the windows ntfs partitions. do you think this setup can work? === innerkick is now known as inerkick [05:32] Hi Guys. I installed Lubuntu on my Toshiba c640 laptop. It got overheating issue. I did install TLP as well as psensors and lm-sensors. But it's still heating up like crazy and automatically shuts down. I even got the laptop serviced few days ago and they even got a cooling agent applied to the CPU. Kindly help how to get the heating working properly [05:36] at this moment the temperature fluctuates as shown and if it even slightly goes above 80C chances are it shuts down automatically . https://pastebin.com/6Z9bWpmZ === innerkick is now known as inerkick [07:56] hey [07:56] i already have a windows installed on it with multiple ntfs partitions. the installation is quite messed up it is slow but i can't reinstall it because i need the way the apps are setup occasionally. but for most times i would want to use lubuntu, while being able to access files on the windows ntfs partitions. do you think this setup can work? [07:57] anyone? [07:58] daringfireball: Hey [07:58] daringfireball: Hold on, I have an idea [07:58] daringfireball: Give me a sec :) [07:58] tsimonq2: sure [07:59] daringfireball: Take a look a this: https://askubuntu.com/questions/113733/how-do-i-correctly-mount-a-ntfs-partition-in-etc-fstab [07:59] linux can read ntfs file system [07:59] daringfireball: What I would do is set the Windows partition to mount somewhere convenient at boot so you can always access your files [07:59] malonumas: That's my point ;) [08:00] ;) [08:00] daringfireball: Then you'll be able to access all of your files at all times [08:00] by default it would't be able to access ntfs? [08:01] daringfireball: By default it will. [08:01] but? [08:01] daringfireball: Just put something in /etc/fstab and it you will always have it mounted. [08:01] There is no "but" [08:01] Lubuntu can use NTFS partitions [08:01] Mount them and use them. [08:02] can i install from a usb drive? [08:02] Install Lubuntu from a USB drive? [08:02] yes [08:04] daringfireball: Do you have Lubuntu on the USB drive? [08:04] Or, what's on the USB drive? [08:04] i have nothing on the usb drive, have downloaded the iso that's it [08:05] now to install it can i do it from the usb drive? [08:05] Yes you can. [08:05] daringfireball: What operating system are you on now? [08:14] windows [08:16] daringfireball: Take a look at this, the same applies for Lubuntu: https://tutorials.ubuntu.com/tutorial/tutorial-create-a-usb-stick-on-windows?_ga=2.124109514.1906335323.1501362208-2004590858.1489273770#0 [08:20] is it possible to create a "live cd" (on usb drive) for lubuntu? [08:20] to try it out first [08:23] daringfireball: Yep. That's what it does. [08:23] daringfireball: It's one ISO that has both the capability to try it out and install it. [08:27] ok i will try it out thank you so much for all your help [08:27] You're welcome. :) === BWMerlin1 is now known as BWMerlin [14:33] Hey I'm trying out the lubuntu live from usb flash drive [14:33] machine has windows installed [14:33] so i boot up using the flash drive [14:33] but internet isn't working [14:33] via ethernet [14:34] i rebooted into windows and it is working fine [14:34] i also disabled wake on lan setting on windows [14:34] and then rebooted into lubuntu [14:34] again internet not working [14:35] so i mess around with the network settings [14:35] create a new connection [14:35] use the google dns [14:35] 8.8.8.8 [14:35] and it started to work [14:35] but it disconnects after a while [14:36] like in a few minutes [14:36] if i reconnect to "ethernet network 2" it works again for a few minutes [14:36] what could be the solution for this? [14:36] anyone? [14:39] ? [14:41] ? [14:42] Hello? [14:44] anyone have any idea? [14:48] Still waiting... [14:51] ? [15:06] ? [15:13] Hey I'm trying out the lubuntu live from usb flash drive [15:13] machine has windows installed [15:13] so i boot up using the flash drive [15:13] but internet isn't working [15:13] via ethernet [15:13] i rebooted into windows and it is working fine [15:13] i also disabled wake on lan setting on windows [15:20] https://pastebin.com/v4ncdGdc [15:21] !patience | Noethernet2 [15:21] Noethernet2: Don't feel ignored and repeat your question quickly; if nobody knows your answer, nobody will answer you. While you wait, try searching https://help.ubuntu.com or http://ubuntuforums.org or http://askubuntu.com/ [15:27] Sorry about that, i was just hoping to have lububtu running by today [15:28] Noethernet2: What version of Lubuntu? [15:29] The latest one [15:29] 17.04 i think [15:29] just downloaded it earlier today [15:30] Downloading of arch linux via torrent works fine, web browsing in firefox does not [15:39] Yep it is 17.04 [15:42] Noethernet2: What's the output of /etc/resolv.conf? [15:43] Noethernet2: Also, if 17.04 is giving you issues, I would consider trying 16.04. The problem is that 17.04 and on uses systemd-resolved which is getting better but I don't know why they switched to it by default... [15:43] Noethernet2: In 17.10 it should be fixed but that's still in development [15:44] nameserver 127.0.0.53 [15:44] is 16.04 long term release version? [15:46] Noethernet2: Yes, 17.04 is not a LTS version but 16.04 is. [15:46] nameserver 127.0.053 <= that's what's in resolv.conf [15:46] Noethernet2: Replace that with `nameserver 8.8.8.8` [15:49] seems to be working now [15:49] thanks [15:49] i'll use it for a while and if there's a problem again I'll be back [15:49] thanks again [15:49] i think i will go for the lts version though [15:50] hey, i am running this off a 4GB flash drive at the moment [15:50] if i download the iso here [15:50] will it be available if i take it to another machine? [15:51] Noethernet2: yep [15:51] Noethernet2: You'll just have to make the edit again [15:53] edit to resolv.conf? [15:53] even in the lts release? [15:54] Noethernet2: Oh, not in 16.04 [15:54] Noethernet2: Sorry, just in 17.04 [15:56] downloading 16.04 on the flash drive now [15:56] hope i won't have to redownload on another pc [15:57] thanks again [15:58] np :) [16:05] Lubuntu does feel extremely fast though [16:05] even on my amd athlon dual core system from several years ago [16:08] :D [16:13] Hey I can't find the downloaded iso file anywhere on the flash drive [16:18] Looks like ill have to re download it [16:19] Noethernet2: Whenever you download anything on a live Lubuntu instance, it does not stay between reboots
