flappyjonsonhello16:40
wxlwut up16:40
flappyjonsoncan someone help me with openvpn on lubuntu? I have wifi dongle that is used to connect to the internet and now I want to make sure that this wifi connection is always connected to vpn. I did try to set automatically connect to VPN using this connection with preconfigured vpn connection but this never work and instead wifi does not want to connect at all (when I untick it wifi dongle connects to network).16:44
flappyjonsonSo i did try to do it classic way that is connectin in terminal by using command openvpn server_address and yes it works ok but if the connection crashes it will not reconnect by itself and I will not know if it even crashed16:45
flappyjonsonany ideas?16:45
flappyjonsonAh in the first one I meant I did try to use network-manager but it is broken and does not work16:52
tsimonq2flappyjonson: Try #ubuntu if you don't get an answer here :)16:55
flappyjonsonsure, thanks :)16:56
wxlflappyjonson: you get it figured out yet?17:08
flappyjonsondepends17:08
flappyjonsonI am reading about openvpn config files becase I gave up on crappy network-manager17:08
flappyjonsonits should be killed with fire17:09
wxlah17:09
wxlwell i had it working in nm-manager fwiw17:09
wxli don't have my machine in front of me, though17:09
flappyjonsonnow if I only could somehow check if vpn is connected17:09
wxli think there's a vpn connection section that you want to make auto run or associate with a particular connection17:10
wxland then in the connection you require the vpn or something of the sort17:10
wxlyou could check your ip to see if you're connected17:10
flappyjonsonI plan to make simple script that would check vpn every 1 second and if it is not alive then to turn off eth0 and when it goes back on to turn eth0 on17:10
flappyjonsonits hard to to if it is dynamic ip17:11
wxlnot really17:11
wxlyour vpn should provide a block of ips, so you can check against them17:11
flappyjonsonhmmmm17:13
wxland i think you can curl to checkip.dyndns.com to get your ip17:13
flappyjonsonI do not want to spam them so much :D17:13
wxlthat's why they made that, admittedly17:14
flappyjonsonmade what ?17:14
wxlcheckip.dyndns.com17:15
flappyjonsonOk but I doubt they would ignore machines that ask for op every 1 second or even less17:15
wxlmaybe, but you could rate limit your software17:15
flappyjonsontrue but I want to do it infinitely17:17
flappyjonsonit would be better to somehow ask openvpn if it is connected but still great idea I will use it if there will be no other way17:17
wxlooh better17:19
wxldig +short myip.opendns.com @resolver1.opendns.com17:19
flappyjonsonfor sure faster17:20
wxlSTUN FTW tho https://askubuntu.com/questions/95910/command-for-determining-my-public-ip/683488#68348817:21
wxlbonus points on that for doing it entirely with simple bash utilities XD17:22
flappyjonsonthis is what I hate in linux sometimes :)17:25
flappyjonsoninstead of simple dig +short myip.opendns.com @resolver1.opendns.com people post answers with 100 lines of commands to do one single thing17:26
wxlyes, because everything else never fails (not)17:26
wxlthere's more than one way to do things. that's not a negative.17:26
flappyjonsonsure there is but if something can be done in simple way then why to hammer 100 doors?17:27
wxldepends on the situation. it's not easy to generalize.17:27
wxlin the windows world, you get one option and there's no changing or customizing it to your liking17:28
wxlin the os x world, kyou don't get the option because apple already decided you don't want it17:28
flappyjonsonmaybe :)17:29
flappyjonsonnow I need to permanently turn off ipv617:29
wxloh that's fairly easy17:29
wxlhttps://www.linuxbabe.com/ubuntu/disable-ipv6-on-ubuntu17:31
flappyjonsonyup this one was easy :)17:35
wxli admit it's easier in freebsd (just a one liner) but that's ok :)17:35
wxlflappyjonson: don't forget not to use chrome (webrtc leaks ips). you can at least turn it off in firefox.17:38
flappyjonsonthanks a lot now I have everything I need :)17:53
wxlyay17:53
flappyjonsonI now write small script that will be in infinite look checking if there is device tunX (made by openvpn when connected) by grepping ifconfig if there is then does nothing and if there is not then turn off eth0. Now openvpn configuration is set to autoconnect when disconnected so when it reconnect and script finds tunX then it will bring eth0 online. Not too beautifull but hopefully will work and I will not ddos dyndns :)17:55
pentiumMCould I get help here with pae?18:13
pentiumMI'm trying to boot Lubuntu on an old Pentium M laptop.. looking to install it there.. but found no support for pae..18:14
krytarik!pae | pentiumM: Try the 'forcepae' boot option18:21
ubottupentiumM: Try the 'forcepae' boot option: Ubuntu provides only PAE-enabled kernels for 32-bit systems now. Some older CPUs may have issues with it. For more info and troubleshooting, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PAE18:21
pentiumMthank you, yes, found that. it worked.18:54
pentiumMNow I'm stuck at booting into the LiveCD..18:58
pentiumMLubuntu does not seem to have an option for this. Only "Install.." and "Rescue.."18:58
pentiumMNeither leads to any obvious way to get into a GUI or shell environment where I can create and image backup of the hard drive.19:01
wxlif you're using the alternate version, there's no such option. you'd need to use the desktop version19:01
pentiumMThere does not seem to really be a live boot option with this distro.19:01
wxls/distro/version/19:02
pentiumMYes, alternate because of only 500 MB RAM in this old machine.19:02
wxlthat's required only for ubiquity, the installer19:02
wxlif you don't need a GUI, i'd just use finnix personally19:02
wxlalthough tbh i don't know what their PAE support is like19:03
wxlyou might be better off just using a USB to SCSI/SATA adapter on the hard drive and just using a less crippled machine :)19:03
pentiumMAh, it belongs to my mom, and trying to move her to a different machine just it's an option now.19:05
pentiumMThanks for the tip on Finnix. Seems like just the thing to live boot and backup. Seems that it does not require pae as of version 102 with no mention since.19:18
