hfpHi, when I change nfs-mountd's port via its config file (/etc/default/nfs-kernel-server on ubuntu), is there a way to restart mountd and have it use the new port without restarting the host? I tried to restart the nfs-kernel-server and nfs-mountd services but it doesn't seem to change the port; the only way is a reboot (which is a pain to handle in an ansible playbook)00:15
oerhekssudo service portmap restart # and then # sudo service nfs-kernel-server restart >> same as you do after export, https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SettingUpNFSHowTo#Install_NFS_Server00:19
oerheksthe guide does not say anything about portmap.service.. https://help.ubuntu.com/lts/serverguide/network-file-system.html#nfs-configuration00:23
oerheks* for systemD that is00:23
hfpoerheks: No, it doesn't change the port it's running on (I'm checking with `rpcinfo -p`)00:31
oerhekshfp, then i have no clue there :-(00:33
heywoodrunning 16.04.3 LTS, trying to configure modeline(s) in xorg.conf — but can't find that file. anyone know where it went (or what it got replaced with)?00:41
oerheksheywood, standard there is none, you should create it yourself.00:42
oerhekssee this guide, place it in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/ >  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config00:44
Jordan_Uheywood: First, why are you trying to configure mode lines? Chances are you're following a very old an no longer relevant guide.00:46
heywoodJordan_U: the machine in question is "headless," and i'm connecting to its nomachine (NX) server from another machine. i'd like the server to match the resolution of the display on the latter machine. i've managed to do this in the past via xorg.conf, but now i can't find my notes nor where to put the modeline info for the latter's display.00:53
compdocI do that with x2go, and dont have to mess with conf files00:54

oerheksdownload it from their website, heywood01:00
oerheksor use the ppa https://launchpad.net/~x2go/+archive/ubuntu/stable01:01
heywoodnever mind. reading x2go.org now. not obvious why i'd want that rather than stock nomachine, though, since it looks like x2go uses the NX protocol under the hood...01:01

HowardwLolotuspsychje: so mount only makes the directory accessible ? it doens’t actually move to another drive?05:57

HowardwLoEriC^^: it’ll also be limited by the disk space in /tmp right?06:01

EriC^^HowardwLo: why dont you edit fstab and set the new tmp properly?06:05

littlekittyhow come I dont have to give any login credentials when I connect?10:46
EriC^^bytefire: no problem10:48
bytefireokay now i'll get to actual problem i want to investigate: uate>> cmd=010:50
bytefiresorry.. being clumsy..10:50
geirhalittlekitty: you should enable one or more such security feature when you enable desktop sharing10:50
bytefirei compile kernel v4.12.5 (stable) and ran ubuntu with that. gui comes up and when i try to log in i get: CRITICAL: We failed, but the fail whale is dead. Sorry...10:51
saryExterminador: Did you install xubuntu within EFI, or legacy BIOS!10:51
littlekittyalso why does x11vnc say it uses por 5901 though i can connect per 5900 ?10:51
littlekittymight there be a second vnc server running?10:52
bytefirewhy did i compile kernel v4.12.5? in an attempt to deal with another problem: system locks up when left running overnight10:52
bytefirethis is ubuntu 16.04 lts10:53
geirhalittlekitty: there's a vnc server ("Desktop Sharing") installed by default10:53
geirhalittlekitty: sounds like you've installed and run a secondary vnc server10:53
littlekittygeirha: oh okay, what is it called?10:53
geirhaOpen the dash and search for Desktop Sharing10:54
arun007littlekitty: It is called remina10:54
arun007remmina10:54
littlekitty@arun007 must be different one 'The program 'remmina' is currently not installed. '10:55
geirhano, remmina is a vnc client. The vnc server is called vino, but named "Desktop Sharing"10:55
littlekittyi cant look it up in dash10:55
littlekittyonly got a ssh connection10:55
arun007geirha: oops :)10:56
littlekittythe thing is i asked about the vnc tool yesterday10:56
saryExterminador: Anyway, The message is reporting a bug in the BIOS mobo firmware. The kernel works around this problem, so unless you are seeing problems you believe are associated with this message you can safely ignore it.10:56
geirhawell, you set it up with a gui; vino-preferences10:56
littlekittybut shame on me i forgot the name10:56
littlekittyno command 'vino' found10:57
geirhayeah there's no binary named vino10:57
arun007ya the binary is called vino-preferences10:57
littlekittyoh i found it. it's called xrdp10:58
littlekittyokay so i got xrdp and x11vnc and neither of them is secured by credentials10:58
littlekittybut what is used for my ssh connection then? how can i find that out?10:59
geirhayou might like freenx or x2go more10:59
littlekittyx11vnc seems easier to configure11:00
littlekittyso how can i stop xrdp from autostarting?11:00

scottyghello all. i currently have linux-image-generic, linux-image-generic-lts-utopic, and linux-image-generic-lts-vivid installed (hardware enablement stack). linux-image-generic started complaining about being held back. i could just run apt-get install on the package but i'm wondering if i should just purge -generic and -generic-lts-utopic since I don't need them.16:32

MeiRi'm exploring a new existing server for learning it. it's ubuntu with ufw disabled, and iptables lists some rules. how can i be sure what is the source of the rules for automatic startup?20:12
TJ-MeiR: usually iptables-save and iptables-restore are responsible for saving/loading them. Normally the saved rules are in a file in /etc/20:13
Elec_ATJ-: yep. it worked! Thank you :)20:13
TJ-MeiR: If unsure how they're being applied I'd so "sudo grep -rn INPUT /etc/" to locate all files with "INPUT" in them, and figure out which one it is20:13
MeiRTJ-: yeah, but it's possible to perform iptables-restore also with referrencing a file, right?20:13
MeiRthought it would be better to have a look on startup commands20:14
TJ-MeiR: indeed, that's how the init scripts do it, they simply will have something like "iptables-restore -f /etc/iptables.save"20:14
TJ-MeiR: try "sudo grep -rn iptables-restore /etc/" :)20:14
ycyclistOkay, it looks like --force-yes and --force-confnew might be overlapping.20:15
MeiRok thanks, good direction20:15
TJ-MeiR: if that fails, it's likely a systemd script under /lib/systemd/20:15
MeiRactually, i can look for part of one of the rules20:15
ycyclistI would like --force-confnew and otherwise --force-yes20:15

MeiRPING 0.0.0.0 (127.0.0.1) 56(84) bytes of data.21:28
MeiRping: sendmsg: Operation not permitted21:28
MeiRwtf21:28
gabrielcMeiR: run something like iptables-save |grep -i output|grep -i drop21:29
pikytcusIs there something else I have to do to load the kdump kernel after a panic?21:29
MeiRoh, acutally it makes sense21:29
MeiR-A OUTPUT -j DROP21:29
MeiRit drops anything if it didn't match any rule21:30
gabrielcMeiR: 0.0.0.0 is not valid as destination21:30
MeiRwe added icmp only for input21:30
MeiRthat's why "ping" fails21:30
MeiRsooo i got it21:30
gabrielcMeiR: well, on the client side you must accept output, but on server you must accept input21:30
MeiRi should add the port also on OUTPUT :)21:30
MeiRyeah21:31
MeiRdamn21:31
MeiRwas so simple yet hidden from my thought21:31
gabrielcMeiR: ping is a friend21:31
GrandPa-Gdoes anyone know a discussion place were I could get some help on scraping some complex web pages?21:35
MeiRgabrielc, it should be only --sport in both INPUT and OUTPUT, right?21:37
tomreynGrandPa-G: archive.org probably got forums or mailing lists dedicated to that. there's also archive.otday / archive.is who work on something similar.21:37
MeiRbecause we don't care about destination port21:37
gabrielcMeiR: sport is for source port, dport is for destination port. tcp has both of them21:37
tomreyn.. .and finally some kind-of-organization called archiveteam21:37
tomreynGrandPa-G: of course none of this has anything to do with ubuntu support ;)21:38
MeiRgabrielc, so i must add both?21:38
GrandPa-Gtomreyn: of course, but you are all more informed than me.21:38
MeiRwhich means, 2 rules of INPUT and 2 rules of OUTPUT?21:38
gabrielcMeiR: better specify both21:38
gabrielcMeiR: like -s (source ip) and -d (destination ip) on each rule21:39
tomreynGrandPa-G: i doubt that as a generic statement. there's #ubuntu-offtopic also, but i guess you got fewer listeneres there, and most just know whom to talk to on what (personally i dont)21:40
MeiRFINALLY :D21:40
MeiRthanks a lot gabrielc! and also TJ-21:40
pikytcusTrying kernel 4.11.0-13-generic just for fun21:41

MeiRgabrielc, yeah, finally i could get reply from Check_MK agent21:44
gabrielcif it works read the documentation to make those rules persistent, and if you can reboot it now to confirm21:44

MeiRif it's not clear yet, i'm pretty new to linux world :)21:55
gabrielci have been using Linux for 20 years or more21:56
TJ-MeiR: you should simply set the rules you need in memory, then do "sudo iptables-save > /etc/iptables.rules" or whatever the file is called, to ensure the file format is correct22:00
TJ-MeiR: but, if you want to see the rule format iptables-save uses, on the in-memory rules, just do "sudo iptables -S"22:00

chalcednyis there a recommended way to zip files in ubuntu 16.04 besides commmand line?22:07
chalcednyhubby has several files to send22:07
bjrohanHello all. I was able to remotely log in to my machine with x11vnc. I had to reboot the machine, and now I whne trying to use x11vnc I get the error: XOpenDisplay(":0") failed22:11
bjrohanI'm assuming because, the machine is sitting at the unity logon screen after roboot?22:11
bjrohanHow can I remedy this from the command line remotely22:11
pavloschalcedny: can you put all files in a folder and then from the file Manager zip them all into one zip file which can be sent?22:12
chalcednypavlos, i dunno. can we?22:14
chalcednypavlos, is 7 zip on ubuntu good?22:15
pavloschalcedny: I created a folder in my home dir, chal, then I added a few files into that folder, then with the File Manager I selected that folder to compress and gave it the zip extension22:15
pavloschalcedny: there are many compression pgms 7zip is fine.22:16
chalcednylet me see if he understands what to do22:16
chalcednyhe says he's never done it before22:16
pavloschalcedny: is he working with gui, File Manager only?22:17
chalcednypavlos, gui would be easier yes22:17
pavloschalcedny: ok, start File Manager, right click create new folder22:18
chalcednyok going to his computer chull22:18
pavloschalcedny: drag into that folder a couple of files (later he can add many files22:19
bjrohanUpdate if I run the following command, I can see the login screen, but as soon as I log in x11vnc quits :-(22:19
bjrohansudo x11vnc -xkb -noxrecord -noxfixes -noxdamage -display :0 -auth /var/run/lightdm/root/:0 -usepw22:19
chalcednyok .. he's away from the computer so give him a moment to unlock it22:19

bjrohanpavlos: I believe that i am finding the right track, in that I believe upon connection it wants to create a new session, instead of continuing with the original22:31
pavlosbjrohan: it should connect to the port defined, 5901 I guess22:33
miguelfulleranybody knows if on xubuntu in console mode when I delete a file it goes to a recycle bin or it gets permanently deleted?22:33
bjrohanpavlos: what would i look for in the logs. tailing the logs appears to just show resolutions22:33
bjrohanpavlos: running the command, start on port 590022:33
bjrohanwhereas before reboot it was 590122:33
th0rbjrohan, I use x11vnc on :0, but run autologin at boot so don't ever call a login manager.22:33
pavlosbjrohan: ps -ef | grep x11vnc should list the process running22:35
hggdhmiguelfuller: if you used 'rm', then permanently deleted22:35
miguelfullerhggdh: so console commands for delete like rm don't put files on bin only in graphical file manager?22:36
bjrohanpavlos: that does show it running, even though I can't connect to it, and it had shown that it quit22:36
hggdhyes. the file manager has the logic to move a file to a "trash" place; 'rm' assumes you know whatyou are doing22:37
bjrohanth0r: meaning no login screen then22:37
bjrohanth0r: ever22:37
th0rbjrohan, right...when I log in via vnc I am sent direct to the desktop22:38
bjrohanth0r: and at the machine, again, no login screen22:39
th0rbjrohan, I start x11vnc in rc.local (which I believe no longer works in stretch)22:39
bjrohanth0r: whats stretch?22:39
th0rbjrohan, Right. Come to think of it, I might be at a login screen if I wasn't doing an autologin at boot22:40
bjrohanth0r: possibly a screensaver login?22:40
Casteilok so I've been fighting this frickin ubuntu vm :| http://i.imgur.com/1Q3sZ8X.png22:40
th0rbjrohan, I never tried that. Can put my commandline in the cloud if you would like to dissect it22:41
Casteilmy /boot is full and I'm trying to clear up the unused kernels22:41
naccCasteil: you would need to use dpkg for that at this point22:41
naccCasteil: as your apt can't progress in the broken state22:41
bjrohanth0r: For now, since I am a distance from my machine, just need to get x11vnc to work. I can diable login at boot until I get back to the machine I suppose22:41
CasteilI attempted that :(22:41
naccCasteil: should be able to figure out the installed kernel packages (the old ones) and purge a few to free up enough space in boot to proceed22:42
Casteilusing uname -r I get 4.4.0-81-generic22:42
pavlosCasteil: remove a couple files from /boot directly, that gives room for apt to work22:42
naccCasteil: why is your uname relevant?22:42
naccpavlos: good point22:42
pavlosCasteil: not your current kernel (uname -r)22:42
Casteilhm22:42
Casteilthe fact that this shit can just crap up in here is kinda goofy22:43

Casteil....22:44
naccCasteil: it's not great that you are in this situation22:44
naccCasteil: have you run autoremove at all recently? Or were you mostly using a GUI?22:44
Casteilit's a ubuntu vm hosting an irc bouncer, no gui22:44
th0rbjrohan, https://drive.google.com/open?id=0Bw3H7FgNpAoyUHM4Z0VidjVZWXc22:45
Bashing-omCasteil: If you do not want to deal with it , one can set that the system will deal with it automatically ( for the next time ) .22:45
Casteilthat would be fantastic lol22:45
naccCasteil: ok, then you've been using apt. iirc, by default, apt will say something like "the following packages are no longer needed" typically after each new kernel gets installed, the oldest is no longer needed. Were you doing that? (sudo apt autoremove when you see that message)?22:45
minimecCasteil: maybe first try to 'sudo apt clean' to clear the package cache in '/var/cache/apt/archives'. If apt doesn't work, you can remove then 'by hand'.22:45
pavlosCasteil: you can use dpkg --purge <oldkernel>22:45
th0rbjrohan, give that a go....it might work for you at the login screen....now that I look at it22:46
naccCasteil: look into unattended-upgrades and turning on the autoremove flag22:46
Bashing-omCasteil: When you are stable we will return to ' unattended-upgrades' . remind me then .22:46
Casteilgah, using sudo apt-get purge linux-image-x.x.x-x-generic22:48
Casteil I get22:48
naccCasteil: *not* apt. You have to use dpkg directly.22:48
naccCasteil: as you are in an broken state for some packages, apt can't proceed, most likely22:49
Casteilseems that way22:49
bjrohanth0r: well . . failed, upon reboot, had a login screen :-(22:49
pavlosCasteil: can you send this, ls -l /boot | nc termbin.com 999922:50
Casteilwell that's handy22:51
Casteilhttp://termbin.com/yxxb22:51
th0rbjrohan, I run that command line on a debian laptop and two raspbian desktops. I run it from rc.local at boot. Ubuntu may be different...there are changes in systemd that made it not work in debinan's latest release, so maybe ubuntu is the same22:52
bjrohanok22:52
pavlosCasteil: rm vmlinuz-4.4.0-{64,66,70,71,72} ... that will make enough room22:53
naccpavlos: then probably `sudo apt -f install; sudo apt autoremove` ?22:54
pavlossure22:54
Bashing-omCasteil: pavlos With the caveat that the 'rm' will break the package manager and will have to fix .22:55
Casteilpav ok, so that freed up 4%22:55
Casteil:|22:55
naccBashing-om: it *might* be ok with files removed from packages to be removed, I'm trying to remember22:55
pavlosCasteil: you can clean up the {abi,config,initrd,System-map} respectively22:55
th0rbjrohan how are you trying to run the commandline?22:57
Casteilcrap..22:57
CasteilI have no idea what you're referring to unfortunately, pavlos22:59
naccCasteil: what does apt report now?22:59
naccCasteil: if you're still out of space, pavlos says you can remove the same version of files for abi, config, initrd and System.map in /boot23:00
nacce.g., config-4.4.0-{64,66,70,71,72}23:00

bjrohanI could enter my password at the screensaver screen, and do everything I needed to23:03
pavlosCasteil: use the nc termbin.com 9999 you may have to type those 4-6 chars23:04
pavlosCasteil: ls -l | nc termbin.com 9999 ... then give the url23:04
Casteilmeh, I don't have time for this23:04

chull(i learned on command line debian. i dont know from guis.. hubby is a windows guy. arrgh.23:33
pavloschull: even in windows, we do the same things ... right click on a folder, zip or compress23:34
pavloschull: if you do not see a menu after right click, ...23:34
chullpavlos, uh huh, but i'm still asking if i click the frame or inside the white space of the box or where?23:35
pavloschull: your folders should be Documetns, Downloads, Pictures, and dfc23:35
pavloschull: move the mouse on top of dfc and right click23:35
chullpavlos, yes ok there.. still nothing says zip or compress NOW i know where you're talking23:35
pavloschull: no submenu?23:36
chullpavlos, yes there are submenus but not what you said?23:36
pavloschull: I've got about 17 option in that submenu, open, open with ... and later I have compress, the last being properties23:37
chullpavlos, when i click on dfc it raises the box with the files in23:37
chullpavlos, do i need to close it first?23:37
pavloschull: I will like for File Maanger to run on its own window23:38
chullpavlos, what?23:38
pavloschull: seems cairo dock has icons on the bottom, one is File Maanger23:38
pavloschull: if you click that , the File Maanger appshould open up and run in its own window, right?23:39
chullpavlos, we are completely lost about file manager. there appears to be something to download called 'file manager' its free it says?23:41
pavloschull: is that how it looks? http://www.webupd8.org/2012/04/cairo-dock-30-released-with-gtk3.html23:41
pavloschull: I have the basic ubuntu 16.04 desktop so visually it is difficult to guide you with cairo-dock23:43
chullpavlos, i suspect that cairo-dock is one of those things that people customize. his has icons on both sides, not at the bottom23:45
glitsj16chull: if you want to share files with someone on the same network, it might be a lot easier to use an app like nitroshare (https://nitroshare.net/), which is cross-platform23:45

chullmaybe i can navigate to it in about a week. maybe.23:48
chullpavlos/ glitsj16 he showed me a main file folder finally23:49
