[05:20] good morning to all [05:39] good morning bud [05:47] hi mr-jules [05:47] updated 17.10 but no sign of a dock yet [05:52] https://www.itnews.com.au/news/microsoft-patches-first-critical-linux-on-windows-bug-470426 [05:52] lol [10:13] Hey folks [10:14] \o BluesKaj [10:14] wow, on my artful machine: "138 packages can be upgraded." - it was last upgraded yesterday :) [10:14] o/ ducasse [10:15] yeah, new kernel version too [10:15] and g++ [10:17] 84 packages upgraded here, but I don't have the PIMs or the office suite [10:18] ubuntu rollin' when :) [10:19] brunch, we're talking about Artful 17.10 [10:20] I gave it a go, it was beautiful [10:20] i don't have any office stuff either, not even a de. [10:26] ducasse, using a wm [10:30] BluesKaj: yes, same here [10:31] no I use kde/plasma, was asking if you use a wm :-) [10:31] I forgot the ? [10:32] i3? [10:33] i3, yes. i find it works well both on my 3-monitor desktop and this laptop with small screen. [10:33] * BluesKaj nods [10:34] the multihead handling is really good, treating each screen completely independently [10:35] why 3 monitors if you use a wm? [10:36] because you can't see several virtual desktops simultaneously on one screen [10:38] assume this 3 monitor setup is for work then [10:40] part work, part hobby [10:42] BluesKaj: how's your weather today? the rain and thunder has finally passed here, it seems [10:42] I use VDs but I have them pinned to separate apps, and one extra for miscellaneous on my TV [10:43] all on my TV that is [10:44] yerah, we have a simi iar forecast for the next few days [10:46] I got too used to the KDE/plasma way of doing multiple displays, don't like the way I3 does things in this department. [10:47] I tried the i3 on my laptop, it was interesting for a while , but I still prefer a DE [10:48] thankfully i3 has already been 'ported' to wayland :-p [10:48] I rather like the tiling stuff, but I never could get it just right. [10:48] <---old windows guy , so i'm used to a DE [10:48] ducasse: Oeh, are you doing wayland? [10:49] only played with it so far, it's still missing stuff [10:53] tried fedora 26 with wayland ahd gnome, smooth and fast , but it's gnome :/ [10:53] ahd = and [10:54] I'm on f26 right now [10:54] gnome is pretty neat, but there's some forced vsync stuff going on [10:54] kde/plasma runs poorly on wayland apparently [10:55] so games run like crap unless they're in fullscreen [10:55] which is a bummer since I always play windows [10:57] ducasse: No dpi (or scaling) issues? [10:57] Last time I tried Plasma on Wayland everything was huge! So I figured, but we have xrandr.... oh wait. [11:02] none that i've seen so far, but i'm also worried about the lack of tools like xrandr. [12:34] seriously, how hard can it be, gparted/ changing partitions, graphically [12:39] oerheks: What do you mean? [12:39] he is dragging the partition size just the wrong way, over and over again [12:40] i am not sure how to clear this up [12:43] delete the partition then choose new [12:44] :-D [12:44] unless there's data he wants to save [12:47] He has got it now.. [12:54] oerheks: it took a lot of effort, though :) [12:55] Yeah, sometimes it is hard to find a way to make it clear, i thought i explained well .. [12:56] WHen you have done this once, it is easy, i know [12:56] now wait and let him reinstall grub [12:57] * ducasse grabs a 10-foot pole [14:40] nacc: he's just trying to run a toshiba tool from a live usb, no need for gksu i think. note: it's taken him two hours to put 'sudo ' in front of his command, and he still can't do it. [14:42] ducasse: ah ha [14:42] ducasse: thanks for the context (just waking up here) [15:05] * ducasse looks forward to the day realtek is prevented from making wifi chipsets due to repeated incompetence [15:18] mayb i should not have given the ppa, but then again, he would need to rebuild the driver with any kernelupdeet [15:20] ppa is probably easier, but lets see if the driver even works :) [16:44] cool, did not know ubuntu now had a refind package... i need to try this. [16:45] ducasse, did you stumble across this ? https://gist.github.com/Brainiarc7/dfff8321b94fd666eb64eda0382f6813 [16:47] oerheks: nope, thanks! [16:47] looks interesting... [16:47] I have seen this beiing used a few weeks back, but with troubles. [16:47] not sure it still is troubling.. [16:48] WHere did you find your info? [16:51] hihi, see those horrid incantations for setting up secure boot keys etc :) [16:51] oh, someone just mentioned trying refind in #ubuntu, and i noticed there is now a package in the repos [16:52] oh indeed, time to drop this from my bookmarks [16:54] only zesty, though [16:55] good enough [16:55] King Willie https://www.yahoo.com/celebrity/royal-announcement-william-kate-officially-021200634.html [17:01] moving chromium/chrome discussion here. [17:01] BluesKaj: I just like the blue icon. :D === JanC is now known as Guest25300 === JanC_ is now known as JanC === nacc_ is now known as nacc [19:23] ducasse, fradeco uses kde/plasma, he was asking in kubuntu earlier [19:24] BluesKaj: ah, unknown territory to me then [19:26] ducasse, unless he thinks it's a 'buntu thing [19:26] ask anywhere 'buntu for answrers [19:27] ducasse, now he tells me he runs gnome [19:27] suspicious [19:30] he's new to irc apparently [19:34] echo XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP, should tell you the desktop === nacc is now known as Guest76500 === nacc_ is now known as nacc
