[13:01] If I am using the live CD, and want to install with LVM-LUKS on the SECOND harddrive (but leave the first harddrive with another OS on it), how do I go about doing that? [14:30] I've got my panels all laid out like I want on my laptop. What's the best way to get them over to my desktop's fresh xubuntu install? [14:30] both are 16.04 [14:32] craigbass76, copy /home/yourusername/.config/xfce4/panel to your new machine's /home/yourusername/.config/ [14:33] Heh... I've been using Ubuntu since Dapper, and STILL forget to install vim until I use vi the first time. [14:43] Well, that didn't work. All I saw in my laptops panel directory were references to buttons. Seems as though I should have a directory for each panel, no? [14:44] try moving the entire folder /home/yourusername/.config/xfce4 to your target machine [14:45] I will -- I want to log in and out of XFCE clean on that machine first I think -- I tried moving the whole shooting match yesterday and got an error when trying to get into XFCE on the Desktop [14:58] diogenes_, Mucho betterer. I think I was still logged into XFCE on the laptop last time I tried copying and failed. That or it was because xubuntu-desktop package had a fight with Mint. I'm runnign straight xub now. [14:59] so what is the result? [14:59] I'm good to go [14:59] ok [15:00] Except for not having some of the programs installed yet that links point to (vivaldi, geany, etc) but they're there at least and will start working in a few minutes [15:01] With the last copy, I was getting some "Your last session didn't shut down properly" or something error, and I'm not sure which of the two scenarios caused it. [15:40] anybody here ? [15:40] I am having problems installing Xubuntu 16.04.3 on a laptop [15:41] it has that Intel fake RAID, which seems to be ubuntu compatible [15:42] (fake)raid0 is detected as /dev/mapper/isw_ .... [15:42] and the installer is able to write to it [15:42] however, the install comes to a halt when it tries to install the boot loader [15:42] for some reason it defaults to trying to install the boot loader to /dev/sda which fails [15:43] I then get prompted to choose another drive to install the boot loader to, but I am unable to continue from this dialouge box, no matter what I do [15:44] I am given the option to select a drive, continue without boot loader or to abort the installation [15:44] none of the above will let me continue [15:44] any ideas ? [15:47] I could ditch the fakeraid and do software raid [15:47] but I cannot find the alternate install image that lets me skip the GUI installer and use the text based one [15:47] so apparently no software raid for me [15:48] this is the legacy bios installer btw [15:48] the EFI installer was able to finish, but then the machine was unable to boot from the install [15:49] !mini.iso | Funky_Boris [15:49] Funky_Boris: The Minimal CD image is very small in size, and it downloads most packages from the Internet during installation, allowing you to select only those you want. The installer is text based (rather than graphical as used on the Desktop DVD). See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD [15:50] krytarik: is that also for Xubuntu or will it only get me Ubuntu ? [15:51] You can install any DE you want from there. [15:51] right [15:52] should I report somewhere that the installer defaults to wanting to install the boot loader to /dev/sda regardless of where the rest of the installer has been asked to install things ? [15:52] should I report that once boot loader install fails, the resulting dialouge box traps you ? [15:53] It seems that the 2nd option (to manually install boot loader) would have worked for me [15:53] or the first, if it had indeed worked [15:54] or is it all just features, not bugs? :) [15:55] I have tried both xubuntu-16.04.2-desktop-amd64.iso and 04.3 btw [15:57] Yeah, I think you've hit the limit of what the graphical installer is able to provide. [15:58] perhaps [15:58] but I should be able to get past the dialouge from failing the boot loader write somehow, right ? [15:58] I am stuck there, regardless of the option I choose [15:59] and does it make sense for the installer to _always_ try to install the boot loader to /dev/sda ? [15:59] regardless of which devices are present ? [18:22] Does anyone know what to do when this happens at bootup "Volume Group "Xubuntu-vg" not found"? [18:26] mark76: is this on a live cd ? [18:35] No, normal installed system well_laid_lawn [18:35] mark76: see if this helps https://askubuntu.com/questions/551446/cant-find-lvm-root-dropped-back-to-initramfs [18:35] !lvm [18:35] Tips and tricks for RAID and LVM can be found on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SoftwareRAID and http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/LVM-HOWTO - For software RAID, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FakeRaidHowto [18:36] I'll check em out later === SM0RUX_ is now known as SM0RUX === es1_ is now known as es1
