jbichaduflu: hi, I found some webkit bugs you might be interested in: https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=173796 https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17340602:34
ubot5bugs.webkit.org bug 173796 in Media Elements "[GStreamer] Browsers that use WebkitGTK play some videos with severe distortion if using VA-API." [Normal,New]02:34
ubot5bugs.webkit.org bug 173406 in WebKit Gtk "[GTK] Enable GStreamer GL by default on production builds" [Normal,Resolved: fixed]02:34
jbichahttps://lists.webkit.org/pipermail/webkit-gtk/2017-August/003137.html02:34
* duflu looks02:35
duflujbicha, thanks but upstream already told me about that one. It's different to what I was working on02:36
dufluAlthough a bit blurry too. So maybe my fix will solve it too02:36
duflujbicha, either way, the relevant fix if at all was provided to upstream 10 days ago: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=77345302:38
ubot5Gnome bug 773453 in general "cluttersink: support GLTextureUpload for EGL/Wayland" [Normal,New]02:38
dufluAnd is already in 17.1002:38
dufluIf that doesn't fix it, then it's not related to me :)02:39
jbichaok, but gstreamer_gl is a different issue, right?02:39
duflujbicha, yeah I would guess gstreamer's gl plugin rendering things wrong is a different issue. It's always been perfect for me02:40
jbichadid you see the webkit mailing list link I posted ^02:41
dufluand the relevan Ubuntu fix was https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gstreamer-vaapi/1.12.2-1ubuntu202:41
duflujbicha, the "bad" plugins is something we discussed on ubuntu-desktop mailing list recently. It's because the opengl plugin and its support libraries (actually usually just the support libraries) are used by countless other plugins02:42
dufluI can only help gstreamer untangle itself so much....02:43
jbichaduflu: historically, we have moved a few plugins from -bad to -good so I'm wondering if that will make sense here02:46
duflujbicha, I'm not sure I want to assert any such decision. Happier not having gstreamer in my life at all. Its architecture and performance problems seem like they might be too large to deal with long term. I prefer ffmpeg-based soltuions instead02:48
jbichabut for your vaapi feature, you need it, right?02:54
duflujbicha: Yes it is needed for now. I haven't looked yet to see how tight the linkage requirement is. I only prioritized that work because fixing totem was easier than retiring totem. But I don't want to continue with that same rationale indefinitely02:57
dufluActually totem's still not fixed really. I only made acceleration work, but totem stutters and uses higher CPU than it should02:58
dufluMy initial analysis lask week showed that totem is redrawing/resizing its entire widget tree on every video frame, like 60 times per second. That might be part of the issue.03:00
jbicharobert_ancell: hi, recovered from the GUADEC trip?03:20
robert_ancelljbicha, yep :)03:20
jbichaI was surprised you didn't upload gnome-software to the xenial queue last week03:20
robert_ancelljbicha, for the fix? It's stuck on phased updates and it was a Friday evening when I had the fix03:23
jbichaoh03:24
jbichaphased-updates has been kind of annoying for gnome-software03:24
jbichait did cause a few things though, but I'm sad about gnome-software/zesty :(03:24
jbicha*it did catch03:26
duflujbicha, I have seen hints that Gnome 3.25/3.26 might come in 17.10, then 18.04, then 17.10.... is it still more likely 18.04?03:39
jbichaduflu: we discussed that a bit at the weekly meeting, we're doing 3.26 for 17.10 where we can03:41
duflujbicha, in parts then? How about Shell and Mutter?03:41
jbichaa few things were blocked on didrocks getting the per-session gsettings overrides in03:41
dufluCool, that's better than I thought03:42
jbichagjs doesn't build on s390x so we might want to remove it there (but it has rdepends)03:42
jbichato upgrade Mutter, we have to make sure that Budgie still works, I just started a conversation with Budgie about that https://github.com/budgie-desktop/budgie-desktop/issues/110303:43
jbichayou can try 3.25.90 stuff not in artful yet by using the GNOME3 Staging PPA03:44
jbichaduflu: have you seen the version tracker? https://people.canonical.com/~platform/desktop/versions.html03:47
duflujbicha, no. Thanks03:48
jbichain the gnome-shell row  3.24.3-0ubuntu1 / 3.25.90-0ubuntu0~artful2  the second version shows what's in the GNOME3 Staging PPA03:48
dufluBonus! Sushi gets automagical hardware accelerated playback on video files. Works beautifully with 4K files too04:02

popeyMorning all09:10
popeyIs artful wayland-by-default now? I don't seem to be able to start an X session09:11
didrockspopey: it's not yet (next Monday)09:12
didrockspopey: but gdm has a bug which doesn't start necesserally the session you select09:12
didrocksseb128: do you have the wiki page handy to trigger an autopkgtest remote suggesting another package from proposed?09:19
didrocksI remember your asked the other day, but can't find back the link in the discussion thread in my IRC logs09:20
popeydidrocks: ah, that'll be the problem I guess. I have apps which only work on x09:24
didrockspopey: echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE09:25
didrocksthat's how you know in which "flavor" your are :)09:25
didrockswhat*09:25
didrocksor just sudo any app :p09:26
popeyok09:26
popeydidrocks: yeah, wayland..09:35
popeywhich bug is it that you mentioned?09:35
didrockspopey: bug #170515709:36
ubot5bug 1705157 in gnome-session (Ubuntu) "On fresh install or fresh boot greeter always show "ubuntu" though selected session may be ubuntu-wayland" [Undecided,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/170515709:37
didrockspopey: we'll see if "doing wayland by default" may fix it, so pending on that first09:37
popeydiscovered that evince fails on wayland + aa = bug 171048709:40
ubot5bug 1710487 in evince (Ubuntu) "evince silently crashes with apparmor error on artful" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/171048709:40
seb128didrocks, I did it by adding &trigger=<package>%2F<version> to the retry url09:47
seb128popey, thanks09:47
didrocksseb128: oh ok, thanks!09:52
xnoxdidrocks, and gdm will run under wayland too? i wonder if i should not hardcode X check in systemd autopkgtests then.09:56
didrocksxnox: gdm will run under wayland, only the live session won't for ubiquity right now09:57
didrocksxnox: you can easily do that in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf09:57
didrocksWaylandEnable=false09:57
didrocks(that's what I'm doing in casper_bottom)09:58
xnoxack thanks.09:58

ouroumovseb128, I emailed -devel regarding bug #1700930 but I don't know if the mail was transmitted (cleared list moderator approval), do you have some information regarding this?10:44
ubot5bug 1700930 in unattended-upgrades (Ubuntu) "Default action policy for "Security Updates" changed between 14.04 and 16.04" [Undecided,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/170093010:44
willcookejbicha, would you mind taking a look at my comment in:  https://trello.com/c/Ob58BJx011:19
willcookejbicha, see if you think that is the correct place for that override?  I saw some bug comments over the weekend about this, and r_basak emailed to the Desktop list saying he'd noticed it was still a problem.11:19
willcookeIMO, turning this off is the right thing to do - it's causing problems and is non-obvious on how to fix.  Setting the default to off and allowing those who want to enable it to do so themselves seems like a better default.11:20
willcookeHowever, I've also seen talk of this being fixed elsewhere, but I think we should still set that option for Ubuntu users.11:21
willcookeseb128, FYI ^  Did some reading, I think we should turn it off11:21
seb128ouroumov, good11:25
seb128willcooke, yeah, I think I agree with that11:25
popeywillcooke: do we have a plan for the things in unity settings which aren't in gnome settings? Specifically I have no way to turn off/on whoopsie, and missing link to my whoosie reports?11:47

ricotzhey desktopers, would be nice to get glib 2.53.5 and gobject-intospection 1.53.5 picked up :)11:51
seb128ricotz, that's a job for Laney but he's still not back from his debconf trip11:55
seb128so I guess later in the week or next week11:55
seb128ricotz, is there any reason we need it now? or it's just allergy or having a versions outdated since a few days? ;-)11:56
ricotzseb128, I haven't actually checked, but I doubt all mkenum fixes are included11:57
seb128ricotz, I've not seen signs of big problems so I think we are fine waiting for L_aney to be back11:58
seb128also didrocks wanted to get the per desktop override transition through first11:58
ricotzseb128, alright11:58
jbichayeah, Lan_ey and didrocks both basically said not to touch glib so I'll let them figure it out :)12:45
jbichawillcooke: seb128: but should we disable the mac randomization feature by default for zesty too?12:46
willcookejbicha, it's a tricky one - if we can do the config files in such a way that we don't break people's current config (which I /think/ we can do via conf.d -> 90-disable-mac-randomisation.conf for e.g.) then yes - but could be risky.  WDYT?12:48
jbichaI don't see it as risky, but we can evaluate after fixing artful12:50
willcookejbicha, cool!  Are you happy to look at making that change?  I think the conf.d is the right way to do it and I think I know how to make the patch, but figured it would take you 20 mins and me about 4 hours :D12:51
jbichayes12:53
willcookethanks jbicha, much appreciated12:53
jbichaI'd like to update gvfs to 1.33.90. There's one bug I identified. We'll just have to figure out which solution we want but I'm not sure that should hold up the update at this point12:56

ubot5Gnome bug 786013 in admin backend "duplicate authentication prompts" [Normal,New]12:57
seb128jbicha, the bug seems an annoyance but yeah probably not worth blocking the update13:06
seb128jbicha, the url of the link on https://trello.com/c/IjsvETMu/243-reduce-gtk2-presence-in-default-install is buggy, I don't find how to edit though, do we need to delete and add a new one?13:13

Laneythe last day was a lot about autopkgtesting13:37
Laneysomeone is working on enabling that stuff in debian now like we have13:37
Laneywonder if we should hook autosync up to that when it exists in some way13:37
seb128Laney, I'm good thanks, though travelling tonight/tomorrow which I could have done without but not point going to complain much, I'm going to have a long w.e in exchange :-)13:41

jbichadidrocks: how about gnome-session and gdm?14:06
GargoyleHi All. Been using ubuntu for a long time on servers and dabbled with desktop on previous laptops, but never stuck with it really. Now though, I have build a new workstation which has Ubuntu as the main OS (And Windows+Steam for games! ;-) I'll probably just lurk around in the background and ask some n00b questions. But would really like to eventually get into some development so I can help fix some of the annoyances - instead14:13
Gargoyleof just moaning about them on Twitter! :D14:13
willcookecan anyone else reproduce this?  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm3/+bug/171063714:21

willcookeGargoyle, good to see you here! Please ask away, although non-development questions are probably more likely to get an answer in #ubuntu.  But it's good to have you here :)14:23
willcookeSaviq, can you find a reliable way to reproduce that?  I can't make it break here ^14:25
Saviqwillcooke: I'll try, will post in the bug if I do14:27
willcookeSaviq, thanks14:27
seb128willcooke, never saw/hit that itself myself14:30
oSoMoNnever experienced that bug, sounds really bad14:34
seb128jbicha, do you know if bug #1689825 is something flatpak upstream is aware of?14:37
ubot5bug 1689825 in lightdm (Ubuntu) "gnome-keyring not unlocked on xenial when dbus-user-session is installed, which flatpak depends on" [Undecided,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/168982514:37
seb128it's quite an annoying issue14:37
seb128I wonder if we should make unity-session conflicts with dbus-user-session or something to prevent users to get bitten by that14:38
jbichaseb128: my understanding is that the flatpak ppa part of the bug is fixed now, the maintainer was on vacation14:40
seb128jbicha, do you have any pointer to an upstream discussion when I can refear to in the launchpad bug?14:42
jbichaI emailed him twice, finally got a reply this morning ;)14:44
jbichabut popey managed to find him quicker ;) https://twitter.com/gnomealex/status/89526369098292838414:45
