ppkumaHi, I'm having problems with ubuntu-xboxdrv. My controller is acting up on rocket league so I tried to modify the configuration and now, on top that it still isn't working I'm getting an error in apt-update. Can you guys help me? http://paste.ubuntu.com/25385055/00:03

leftyfbI know this might not be exactly supported, but .... :)00:11
leftyfbSo I'm running Ubuntu on my pi. I'm trying to run a resize script similar to what raspbian does on boot but from the kernel directly. I'm adding init=/path/to/script to the kopt. After update-grub it gets added to all the kernel lines in menu.lst but the script doesn't seem to be running at all.00:11

john38hello can anybody suggest a good file recovery tool for ubuntu that can recover file names as well?????00:38
kenrinUsually programs that can do that have to be installed before any files are lost so it can preserve the metadata.  But if you find one let us know~00:42
Jordan_Ujohn38: What filesystem did you delete the file from? Note that backups are the only 100% reliable method of undeleting files.00:42
john38this one00:43
john38i believe its sdb00:43
john38im doing a recovery now with photorec00:43
john38but i going to have to manually check files00:44
Jordan_Ujohn38: You mean that you deleted a file from within your Ubuntu installation's root partition, correct?00:44
john38yes i believe so00:44
Jordan_Ujohn38: And you're currently booted from a LiveUSB and making sure not to mount this partition with write permissions?00:45
john38i duall boot this HDD with windows 7 and Ubuntu 16.0400:45
Jordan_Ujohn38: If not, then do that *now*. The longer you use the partition you delted the file from, the more likely that you will overwrite its contents permanently.00:47
john38ok i cancelled photorec recovery00:48
Jordan_Ujohn38: If you've been writing files to your Ubuntu partition while trying to recover files from that same partion, you greatly increased your chances of losing the file's contents forever.00:48
john38i just deleted it yesterdaty00:49
john38its a html file firefox00:49
Jordan_Ujohn38: OK. Have you rebooted into an Ubuntu LiveUSB yet?00:50
john38no00:50
leftyfbjohn38: just to set your expectations, the chances are greater that you will not recover your file00:50
leftyfbjohn38: rm is no joke00:51
Jordan_Ujohn38: If you don't have an Ubuntu LiveUSB right now, *DO NOT* download an Ubuntu iso while booted into Ubuntu. Seriously, every write you make to your Ubuntu partition could be ovewriting your file's contents forever.00:51
leftyfbespecially on ext4 and especially on a filesystem you've continued to use for 24 hours00:51
Pinkamena_DI have a laptop with a secondary HDD which I just use as an archive. I have it unmounted with quick spindown but still every few minutes with no specific user activity it will spin up for some reason. Is there some way to prevent linux/ubuntu from accessing it and causing it to spin up?00:51
john38i remember reading that i shoultn recover to a partition that i currently using right??00:51
john38well i have another hdd00:52
john38its unmounted00:52
john38should i recover to that??00:52
Jordan_Ujohn38: That's correct, you shouldn't recover to the same partition you're currently using because you shouldn't write anything to the partition you're trying to recover from.00:52
leftyfbjohn38: The longer your computer is running, the less likely you'll recover that file00:53
Jordan_Ujohn38: Are you currently booted into the partition you want to recover the file from?00:53
john38ok00:53
leftyfbJordan_U: yes, he is00:53
demophobiaI read something saying I needed to make a change to my Windows partition before trying LiveUSB lubuntu or it may not know how to boot into Windows ever again; are you familiar with this probem and the webpage explaining it?00:54
leftyfbdemophobia: that's not a thing00:54
Jordan_Ujohn38: If you really care about that file, then shut down *now*. Boot into Windows or use another machine and join here from there. If you don't really care about that file, for example if you could recreate the file with less than 8 hours of work, then just consider it permanently gone (since it likely is) and take this as a learning experience.00:55
leftyfbjohn38: use git on things like this and maybe on a folder under a dropbox account00:56
budestJordan_U: Any idea how to copy a file to a HFS+ drive? Getting permissions errors.01:00
demophobialeftyfb: is it an issue if i install lubuntu, rather than merely boot from LiveUSB?01:01
leftyfbdemophobia: installing Ubuntu dual boot with Windows can be pretty easy. But if you're not careful, you could wipe Windows. Booting from a live USB and trying out Ubuntu will do nothing at all to Windows unless you purposely mount your Windows partition and start making changes.01:02
leftyfbdemophobia: there's lots of documentation online, including the wiki.ubuntu.com on dual booting01:03
demophobia'k, thanks.01:03
leftyfbdemophobia: regardless of how you go about installing Ubuntu, your first step is always make a backup and recovery plan01:03
demophobiaExactly. I just got a Dell D620 for lubuntu, but the seller did not give me an installation or recovery disc. :( so I'm going to create both a disc and USB drive before booting from the lubuntu liveUSB i made.01:04
Jordan_Ubudest: You're going to run into 2 problems. 1: Your user IDs won't match up, which is easy to work around. 2: Linux can't write to journaled hfsplus, the easiest solution being to disable journaling (which makes the filesystem less resilient to corruption if you lose power or the drive is unplugged while writing to it) from within OSX.01:05
john38Hey Jordan_U i have a hdd called backup that unmounted01:06
john38how do i recover to that hdd using photorec01:06
john38????01:06
Jordan_Ujohn38: And you're currently booted from an Ubuntu LiveUSB?01:06
john38no01:07
Jordan_Ujohn38: What are you currently booted into?01:07
john38the partition i deleted that file from01:07
john38i want to recover fount files to the unmounted hdd01:07
Jordan_Ujohn38: DO NOT BOOT FROM THAT PARTITION. We've told you this many times now. Shut down now and please pay more attention in the future.01:07
john38ok01:08
john38sorry01:08
leftyfbjohn38: lets just consider your file gone01:08
john38ok01:08
john38can i access photorec from live cd01:08
Jordan_Ujohn38: Yes, though if you want the filename preserved you'll want to try extundelete first. Also, to repeat it again, your file is very likely already irrecoverable.01:09
john38i just found most of the file right now recovered01:10
john38give me instructions on what to do???01:10
john38boot to live cd01:10
john38when run terminal01:11
john38then run terminal01:11
john38?????01:11
Jordan_Ujohn38: Stop discussing this while you're booted from that partition. Shut down now. Connect from your Windows partition and talk to us from there (easiest way is to use a web browser and go to http://webchat.freenode.net ).01:11
john38ok i also deleted the same file from windows01:12
Jordan_Ujohn38: Do you have another computer?01:12
john38no01:12
john38can i recover that from that was deleted to from windows partition to this partition01:12
=== littlebit1 is now known as littlebit
Jordan_Ujohn38: Do you have an already made Ubuntu LiveUSB?01:13
john38yes01:13
Jordan_Ujohn38: Reboot into that now and talk to us from there.01:13
john38i'll just use photorec now here to scan the windows partition and recover to this partition is that alright01:13
john38????01:13
Jordan_Ujohn38: I would still not recommend that, no.01:14
john38the file was deleted from windows as well01:15
john38i dont use windows much01:15
Jordan_Ujohn38: I understand that. But you should not avoidably reduce your chances.01:15
john38ok ok01:15
john38i'll logon to windows01:16
Jordan_Ujohn38: NO.01:16
john38no01:16
john38?01:16
Jordan_Ujohn38: Boot from the Ubuntu LiveUSB. Then you won't be writing to either of the partitions that you deleted the file from.01:16

SadneophyteHi, I upgraded to 16.04.3 and the 4.10 kernel seems to have broken some stuff.  Is there any way to move back to the 4.4 or 4.8 kernels?  Grub soesn't seem to want to add them to the bootlist02:36
FretegiSadneophyte, im not sure how to downgrade, but what kinda stuff has been broken? maybe we can fix that02:40
SadneophyteFretegi, hehe.  Suspend got fritzy.  I don't REALLY want to downgrade, I just can't figure out how to get the 4.4 kernel entry included in the grub bootup menu.  update grub only sees the 4.0 kernel02:41
Sadneophyte4.10* kernel02:41
Fretegiupdate-grub doesnt work?02:42
inc0looking at lsmod also I see only 54 modules loaded02:42
inc0no graphics, wifi, bluetooth02:42
SadneophyteFretegi, it seems to work, but it doesn't make an entry for each kernel on my machine02:42
inc0nothing02:42
inc0what can modify this? /etc/modules is empty...02:43
FretegiSadneophyte, have you rebooted since the upgrade?02:43

SadneophyteFretegi, I thought it was just some new feature of grub202:44
FretegiSadneophyte, thats the right kernel your in good shape :)02:44
SadneophyteFretegi, but 4.8 and 4.4 seem to work better on this old hardware02:44
FretegiSadneophyte, how so?02:45
Tri3125Is EriC not around anymore?02:45
Fretegiwhat broke?02:45
SadneophyteFretegi, the 4.10 kernel will not resume after a suspend02:45
SadneophyteFretegi, the 4.4 kernel does for instance02:45
SadneophyteFretegi, I thought the 4.8 kernel did too...02:46
FretegiSadneophyte, so it will suspend cleanly but not wake ?02:47
SadneophyteFretegi, it would be hard to debug without serial console, the hardware is very 'exotic' it is a dual quad core xeon macpro2,102:48
Sadneophytefrom 200602:48
FretegiSadneophyte, well never had to sort that out before, but found this guide...02:49
Fretegihttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend02:49
FretegiSadneophyte, so just to make sure, the old kernel images are still in /boot right?02:50
SadneophyteFretegi, right, but to debug the system would take more hardware than I have02:50
SadneophyteFretegi, right, all the images are where they should be02:51
SadneophyteFretegi, maybe I don't understand the boot menu entries.02:54
SadneophyteFretegi, I will RTFM02:54
SadneophyteFretegi, Thanks for your help02:54
SadneophyteDoes update-grup also perform a grub-install?02:55
FretegiSadneophyte, shouldnt need to grub-install02:56
SadneophyteFretegi, I thought so too...02:56
FretegiSadneophyte, but should be able to edit /etc/default/grub to show the other kernel versions02:57
FretegiSadneophyte, https://askubuntu.com/questions/82140/how-can-i-boot-with-an-older-kernel-version02:59
Fretegishould fix ya up02:59
SadneophyteFretegi, right... ... but i am not sure i see the 4.4 and 4.8 kernel entries in the grub menu03:00
SadneophyteFretegi, ahhh  Advanced options for Ubuntu03:01
Sadneophyteokay, see oldtimers like me get confused when stuff is so pretty and tucked away.  Hehe I still feel nostalgic for grub1 and sysV... gotta learn all this new stuff for ubuntu03:02
SadneophyteFretegi, thanks again03:02
FretegiSadneophyte, anytime buddy.. dont worry im back to the learning curve with ubuntu as well and lots changed since in my absense haha happy to help!03:03
SadneophyteFretegi, have you seen journalctl -xe?03:04
FretegiSadneophyte, sure havent, whats that?03:04

FretegiSadneophyte, you pretty good with samba connections?03:06
SadneophyteFretegi, not since 2008...03:07
SadneophyteFretegi, how bad is it?03:07
SadneophyteFretegi, I gotta reboot to see if I can get the older kernel working.03:09

ducassetheInspector: aha. do you need secure boot enabled? if not, disable it.08:04
theInspectorducasse: I have full disk encryption and Ubuntu asks for a password to boot. Will disabling it effect anything?08:06
ducassetheInspector: no. btw, are you building your own kernel?08:06
theInspectorducasse: Okay. No... Why?08:07
ducassetheInspector: just wondering why that module does not have a key...08:08

arunkumar413shotwell throwed this error when connected to a nikon DSLR08:10
arunkumar413Unable to fetch previews from the camera:08:10
arunkumar413Could not claim the USB device (-53)08:10
theInspectorducasse: Is there a way I can give that module a key? Or import the keys again from somewhere?08:14
ducassetheInspector: you can sign it yourself and add that key, but it's a bit complicated, much easier to disable the check.08:16
ducassetheInspector: but i don't understand why that module does not have it in the first place, it's part of the kernel. which release is this?08:17
theInspectorducasse: It's Ubuntu 16.04. It's also worth noting I've never had this issue. I connected my laptop over HDMI to a TV and the audio sounded like it was pitched down. I did some Googling and it looked like a confirmed bug so I tried updating to a newer version following a guide on the forums.08:26
ducassetheInspector: did the guide include installing packages from a ppa/third-party repo?08:28
FoeHammeredI just had to restart to stop my hard drive from filling up. What could cause that to randomly happen?08:28
FoeHammeredActually, it might be worth clarifying, I have my home folder on a separate hard drive from my / , and the / isn't full at all. It's something in the home folder, apparently.08:28
ducasseFoeHammered: start bt finding out where all the space went, ncdu is good for that08:29
FoeHammeredncde? Is that a command line tool?08:30
theInspectorducasse: Yes? It had me add the ppa ubuntu-audio-dev/alsa-daily08:30
ducassetheInspector: that explains it, those modules won't be signed with a registered key08:31
ducassetheInspector: it would have been nice if you've mentioned that when you were telling us what you've tried...08:32
theInspectorducasse: ooohhh... Now I feel dumb. I'm going to restart and disable secure boot. If I don't join again assume it worked.08:33
theInspectorducasse: Thank you! Yeah, sorry. I assumed since it was an "official" ubuntu ppa it wouldn't have been an issue.08:33
ducassetheInspector: no such thing as an official ppa - they're all unsupported :)08:34
ducassetheInspector: but yes, try that first.08:35
farhadtheInspector: sorry. no, i cant08:38
farhadtheInspector: but let me check recovery mode08:39
theInspectorducasse: I have sound again! Thank you so much. I can't belive it was something so trivial. I had been trying for 3 days now to fix it to no avail.08:44
ducassetheInspector: no problem, yw :)08:45
theInspectorducasse: The real test will be when I try it over HDMI if it sounds distorted...08:45

L00P3Xin short. external usb sticks, hardrive do not mount after i messed up the system holding down the powerbutton.. would save all my data on hdd14:24
Some_Personleftyfb: It looks like it just attaches to the current session. And my laptop only has one display, so that's all I get14:24
oh4every so often during the day, I cannot resolve anything internally. When I look at my dns settings with 'systemd-resolve', my internal dns is listed first, then my externals as secondary and third. I can hit the net fine but if I try to hit an internal domain, it fails. If I reset (stop and start) my NIC, it works fine again. If I compare the output of my NIC settings before and after, they are the same14:26
Some_PersonAlso doesn't look like x11vnc is using cursors properly (always just a black pointer). That kinda sucks14:26
oh4I can't figure out what is causing this...I'm on 17.0414:26
leftyfbSome_Person: it has nothing to do with your laptop only having 1 display or sessions. Maybe it's a limitation of your Windows VNC client, I'm not sure. I have a pretty stock Ubuntu laptop in front of my with an external monitor plugged in that the desktop extends to. I used my main laptop to connect to it (also running Ubuntu) and I can scroll across both screens in the same VNC client window14:27
oh4this happens on both wired and wifi14:27
Some_Personleftyfb: Unplug the external monitor14:27
leftyfbSome_Person: huh?14:27
Some_Personthen you'll probably see what I'm getting14:27
Some_PersonMy laptop only has 1 display. My desktop, which I'm trying to use to connect to my laptop, has 2. I want both displays to show the laptop, with it extended across them14:28
BluesKajoh4, set your DNS  IPs in /etc/systemd/resolved.conf14:28
oh4so when the issue occurs, if I do an nslookup on anything internal, some external DNS server is being hit14:28
leftyfbSome_Person: right ... read what I typed. There's no difference except my "remote" machine is also a laptop with an external display (multiple displays) and I'm using an Ubuntu VNC client, not Windows.14:29
wad*sigh* reboot for a coinflip.14:29
leftyfboh4: I would investigate your router since that is the DNS server for your local network14:29
oh4BluesKaj: but if I do this, I'll always have to make the change14:29
oh4this is a laptop14:30
Some_Personleftyfb: I think in your situation, you get 2 monitors because your laptop has 2 monitors14:30
Some_PersonMy laptop only has 1, so I'm stuck with 1 in my client14:30
leftyfbno14:30
oh4leftyfb: I did...nothing else on the network gets this issue except my two ubuntu computers...windows or fedora are ok (shrug)14:30
leftyfbSome_Person: no no no14:31
Some_Personleftyfb: Try unplugging it14:31
leftyfbSome_Person: no14:31
Some_PersonI say that because it appears to connect to the existing session14:31
leftyfbSome_Person: I have 2 laptops .. 1 with 2 displays with the VNC server. The other (my client, equal to your laptop) has no external display plugged in14:31
Some_Personwhich only has 1 display14:31
Some_PersonOkay, in that case, what client are you using?14:32
leftyfbalso, a VNC client doesn't care how many displays your local machine has. The VNC client acts the same regardless.14:32
leftyfbSome_Person: I told you. remmina .. on Ubuntu14:32
oh4leftyfb: so my dns server for lookup when the issue occurs seems to poing back to 127.0.0.5314:32
oh4does ubuntu have an internal dns  that runs by default?14:33
L00P3Xplease, usb don't mount and not apperas anywhere.. need to save my data14:33
leftyfboh4: nmcli device show|grep DNS14:33
leftyfbL00P3X: type dmesg when you plug in the "usb". There's probably errors at the end14:33
Some_PersonSo when you connect with remmina, your laptop automatically changes to have 2 "displays"?14:33
oh4https://www.irccloud.com/pastebin/apl7bVdG/14:34
leftyfbSome_Person: no. Remmina displays a Window, just like any other application. In the Window there 's a scroll bar at the bottom that lets me scroll across both displays on the remote VNC server14:34
oh4@leftyfb14:34

BluesKajoh4, here's one method that may help https://askubuntu.com/questions/908319/ubuntu-17-04-systemd-resolved-configuration14:36
Some_Person2 monitors on the client, 1 monitor on the machine I'm connecting to, but I want the machine I'm connecting to to extend across both monitors on the client14:36
Some_PersonMaybe I didn't explain myself well enough14:36
leftyfbyou didn't14:36
L00P3Xleftyfb: what i tried to is lsblk.. and i can't find it14:37
leftyfbSome_Person: maximize the vnc client Window across both screens. This really has nothing to do with Ubuntu or VNC actually. It's Windows and extending a window across both displays14:37
leftyfbL00P3X: If nothing shows up in dmesg when you plug in your "usb", then there is something wrong with your "usb". It's either damaged or the usb port is damaged14:38
Some_Personleftyfb: I still don't see how that will "give" my laptop a second display it doesn't really have14:39
L00P3Xleftyfb:  1993.131058] usb 2-3: USB disconnect, device number 5 ?14:39
leftyfbSome_Person: it won't. That's not how things work.14:39
Some_Personleftyfb: So does that mean what I want is impossible with VNC (as I suspected)?14:40
leftyfbSome_Person: yep14:40
Some_PersonRight, so I wasted a bunch of time14:40
Some_PersonSo what sort of thing /can/ do this?14:40

ThetaOrionisFor example, I tried to scan a page using Simple Scan, and it failed to install drivers for my scanner. Perhaps the underlying limitations of Crouton are causing the failure16:02

aloo_shupankaj maybe add details, like what is the wifi card&driver, do you use stock NetworkManager etc.16:52
pankajaloo_shu: The problem is that sometimes my wi-fi automatically does not catch the home network even if it is on. So, I have to toggle it on again. And sometimes in process of toggling it neglects the home network totally even it is on. So, I have to restart the Laptop.16:54
aloo_shupankaj just logging out and in already might save you time :)16:56

aloo_shupankaj you can use dmesg in a terminal or a log viewer to see how far the handshake between computer and router proceed16:58
aloo_shupankaj the problem could be *anywhere*, e.g. home grade router busy streaming somebody else's video and just not attending connect requests16:59
pankajaloo_shu: But, why does not it happens with the windows if it is the router that have some adjustments that you stated above?17:01
aloo_shuok, then it's rather not the router17:02

jamie_1leftyfb: so what would you recommend?19:35

naccorion: limits.conf is for login sessions19:36
orionI am concerned that if the machine reboots, the limits will go back to what they were.19:36

jamie_1tgm4883: just have it pop up a window with the pid in it to cancel if i want to19:36
tgm4883jamie_1: zenity would be better as you would get a button to kill it. Doing it my way means you still need to open a terminal and "kill PID"19:37

leftyfbxxMatiasxx: ntfs works just fine on mac19:48
xxMatiasxxioria, omg19:48
xxMatiasxxit worked19:48
xxMatiasxxwhat the hell ?19:48
ioriaxxMatiasxx, it's a bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/102137519:48
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1021375 in nemo (Ubuntu) "Nautilus says the USB stick is read only when it is not" [High,Confirmed]19:48
xxMatiasxxyeaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!19:49
oerheksinstall nautilus-actions nautilus-admin and you have 'edit as administrator' in the menu19:49
xxMatiasxxI knew it had to be something with nautilus, because it works perfectly from console19:49
xxMatiasxxioria, another problem I have is that my hdd has 2 partitions, and it just automounts the first one, I have to manually mount the second one19:50
orionleftyfb: I found out what needed to be done. I needed to modify the pam.d/su config file and enable pam_limits.so for sessions.19:50
xxMatiasxxany hints about what is the problem with that ?19:50
orionAll is well now.19:50
xxMatiasxxoerheks, that nautilus-actions is for me ?19:51
ioriaxxMatiasxx, the exfat it's not automounting ?19:51
xxMatiasxxioria, nope19:51
xxMatiasxxit automounts an HFS+ though19:51
ioriaxxMatiasxx, what ?19:51
xxMatiasxxit is not automounting19:51
xxMatiasxxthe exfat one19:52
xxMatiasxxwhen I plug the hdd19:52
xxMatiasxxI have to do it manually which is not that bad, but would be cool to have it done auto19:52
oerheksif the partition does not automount, it is probably dirty/not clean, run a filecheck.19:52
oerheksgeneral tips, xxMatiasxx19:52
pavlosbjrohan: one way is to mount that smb locally to your system and then you can use cat. example: sudo mount -t cifs //canyon/public /mnt/brian/ Now, ls /mnt/brian shows me text files which I can cat.19:53
xxMatiasxxoerheks, it is a brand new hdd with an new exfat partition, you think that it can be the problem ?19:53
cli-rookieI can't get past the "Welcome to Ubuntu" screen in the installation process19:54
pavlosbjrohan: you need, sudo apt-get install cifs-utils19:54
cli-rookieOr am I supposed to wait until something happens?19:54
ioriaxxMatiasxx, weird,  exfat drives automount normally if fuse-exfat has been installed19:54
bjrohanpavlos, Will give it a go, thank you!19:54
oerheksoh, exfat does not automount, when you don't have it in fstab19:54
xxMatiasxxoerheks, ioria ? heeh who has the reason ?19:55
xxMatiasxxyes or no ?19:55
ioriaxxMatiasxx, let's try fstab ....19:56
xxMatiasxxit works with fstab19:56
OnkelTem_Hi all19:56
xxMatiasxxI tried19:56
OnkelTem_I can't configure sound recording on a newly installed Kubuntu 16.0419:56
oerheksioria, here it shows up on the panel, but not mounted19:56
OnkelTem_I test it in Audacity. But whatever device I select - there is no sound19:56
oerheksexfat, that is19:56
ioriaoerheks, yeah19:56
xxMatiasxxthe problem with the fstab is that i have to mount -a19:56
OnkelTem_How to elaborate the reason of this?19:57
renn0xtk9I got a package with unmet dependencies : qtbase-abi-5-5-119:57
renn0xtk9anyone knows where I could get it ?19:57
xxMatiasxxI think i will go with the instalation of autofs19:57
naccrenn0xtk9: that's not a pacakge, it's a symbol provided by a package19:57
OnkelTem_Also I can't comprehend the interface of multimedia configuration on Kubuntu. It's just f*d up19:57
naccrenn0xtk9: can you pastebin the exact command and output?19:58
fedorafanhey can I stop kernelupgrades anyhow20:00
oerheksOnkelTem_, for recording, did you install the "lame mpg123" packages?20:00
oerheks!info lame20:00
naccfedorafan: why would you want to do that? what upgrades?20:00
ubottulame (source: lame): MP3 encoding library (frontend). In component universe, is optional. Version 3.99.5+repack1-9build1 (zesty), package size 46 kB, installed size 122 kB20:00
fedorafannacc because I got a ubuntu virtual machine with not that much space20:01
naccfedorafan: kernel updates tend to be for bugfixes and security issues20:01
OnkelTem_oerheks: Hi! no, but why? I mean I can't get sound from mic20:01
fedorafannacc hmm ok understand but it makes it difficult too handle free space20:01
naccfedorafan: how much space do you have? do you mean in /boot?20:02
fedorafan1gb20:02
naccfedorafan: that's way more than enough20:02
naccfedorafan: sounds like you aren't running `sudo apt autoremove` or so20:02
oerheksOnkelTem_, oh mic, i though other recording. for control, i would install pavu, but i am on ubuntu.20:02
fedorafannacc in what context20:02
naccfedorafan: and/or removed the metapackages that help manage this for you20:02
naccfedorafan: in any context?20:02
OnkelTem_oerheks: specs claim there is a mic in the front socket. I want to make sure there is one. But I can't disassemble it to ensure, so I hoped to get it from software20:03
naccfedorafan: apt, at least, gives that prompt to run it, when there is antyhing to autremove (I think everywhere, but definitely in the last few releases)20:03
OnkelTem_oerheks: unfortunately UI is so confusing that it's almost to impossible to understand which device means what20:03
fedorafandont know what you want say to me20:03
OnkelTem_For example in Audacity I see aproximately 5 different recording devices. Well, none of them work20:04
naccfedorafan: does `sudo apt autoremove` attempt to remove unused kernels?20:04
OnkelTem_oerheks: ok, I'll check out pavu20:04
fedorafanI try20:04
fedorafanit says 224MB will be freed20:05
fedorafanlinux headers will be removed yes that sounds good20:05
naccfedorafan: that's not what i asked? is it removing kernels?20:05
fedorafanyes20:05
naccfedorafan: not headers, that's irrelevant to /boot20:05
naccfedorafan: linux-image*20:05
fedorafanI just quote20:05
ducasseOnkelTem_: he probably meant pavucontrol, i also like pasystray20:05
naccfedorafan: please use a pastebin20:05
fedorafanok20:06
fedorafanhttps://pastebin.com/7kib3g4i20:07
naccfedorafan: that won't save any space in /boot20:07
fedorafanok20:07
naccfedorafan: please pastebin `ls -ahl /boot`20:08
fedorafanshould I free and check?20:08
fedorafanok20:08
fedorafanI say no20:08
naccfedorafan: it shouldn't matter -- you can do the autoremove at your leisure20:09
fedorafanhttps://pastebin.com/7KmBqDCx20:09
fedorafanI follow your instruction20:09
naccfedorafan: um, you're nohere near out of space in /boot?20:09
naccfedorafan: you only have two kernels installed currently, which is fine20:09
fedorafanso all fine?20:10
fedorafanyou said it will remove not used kernels so why it doesnt show the one I dont use to remove20:12
naccfedorafan: because you always want to keep the two most recent kernels, in case the new kernel fails20:13
naccfedorafan: you can manually remove the older kernel, but it's not a problem of space20:13
fedorafanwait manually so you say 2 have to be there20:13
fedorafanwhat20:13
naccfedorafan: wait what?20:14
fedorafanI dont got you20:14
fedorafan[22:13:36]  <nacc>fedorafan: because you always want to keep the two most recent kernels, in case the new kernel fails20:14
fedorafanno I dont20:14
fedorafanbut ok 2 have to be there20:14
naccyes, you do.20:14
fedorafanwhy20:14
fedorafanI dont20:15
fedorafanwho said I want20:15
bjrohanpavlos, weird, with some mods I got the mount to work. using cat failed, said I didn't have the correct permission, however ls -l gave: -rwxr-xr-x20:15
bjrohanmeaning I shuould be able to read it20:15
naccbecause when the second kernel is installed, and it fails, how d you recover if the older kernel is removed?20:15
naccfedorafan: --^20:15
naccfedorafan: everyone wants that. it's a policy decision in ubuntu, is what i mean. not you specifically20:15
fedorafanso you mean its better to got a backup kernel20:15
naccfedorafan: sure20:15
fedorafanok20:15
fedorafanand if I got more than 220:16
pavlosbjrohan: maybe you need sudo cat file if owner is root can you paste ls -l /mnt20:16
fedorafanthe rest will be removed with sudo apt autoremove?20:16
renn0xtk9nacc https://pastebin.com/gqczKaeT20:16
naccfedorafan: yes, that's the idea20:16
fedorafanworks for me thanks20:16
naccfedorafan: although your /boot looks messed up20:16
naccfedorafan: did you truncate your paste?20:17
naccfedorafan: or maybe the 4.10 kernel failed ot install?20:17
fedorafanyeah I did some stuff removing kernels by instructions I got by google20:17
fedorafancant remember what exactly20:17
naccyeah, that's not a good choice :)20:18
fedorafanok20:18
naccyou're doing things as root which can make your system unbootable20:18
naccyou really should know *what* you're doing20:18
fedorafanwhat is better20:18
pavlosbjrohan: if you're not allowed to look into that dir (a level up), then 755 wont help20:18
naccfedorafan: i don't know, i don't know what state your system was in20:18
fedorafanneither20:18
naccfedorafan: but right now, the 4.10 kernel is unlikely to boot anymore20:18
naccfedorafan: so i'd recommend reinstalling linux-image-generic20:18
fedorafanok20:18
fedorafanhow to?20:18
bjrohanpavlos, ls -l /mnt is drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 12288 Jan 5 2016 host_12820:19
bjrohanhost_128 is my mount dir for the samba20:19
naccfedorafan: `sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-image-generic`?20:19
fedorafanok20:19
fedorafanhttps://pastebin.com/JiU1Gumw20:20
fedorafanyes?20:20
naccfedorafan: oh wait, sorry20:20
fedorafanok20:20
pavlosbjrohan: mine showed up as, drwxrwxrwx+  2 root root    0 Aug 25 12:37 brian/20:20
naccfedorafan: `sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-image-generic-hwe-16.04`?20:20
fedorafanlets try20:21
fedorafanhere20:21
fedorafanhttps://pastebin.com/f3Bf5pL820:21
pavlosbjrohan: also shows if I do, df -h20:21
naccfedorafan: yes, looks right20:22
fedorafanallright20:22
fedorafanyes20:22
renn0xtk9I don't get why, since libqt5core5a:amd64 is installed on my computer20:22
GrandPa-Gis this a good place for an apache2 question?20:23
nicomachusGrandPa-G: depends. Is it mostly an Ubuntu question?20:23
nicomachusotherwise, ##networking may be better. Or a dedicated apache channel.20:23
nicomachusGrandPa-G: best to just ask the question, and people will let you know if they can answer or if someone else may be better suited.20:24
fedorafannacc its done20:24
fedorafanreboot?20:24
naccfedorafan: pastebin `ls -ahl /boot` again?20:24
fedorafanok20:24
fedorafanhttps://pastebin.com/ZPBPGbdk20:25
naccrenn0xtk9: looking20:25
GrandPa-GI want to execute a python script inside my php web page. I am not sure how to configure apache2. I have used this as a guide, but that appears to be if you just want to run the script only, not embedded.20:25
naccrenn0xtk9: in my test env, gammaray installs fine. `apt-cache policy gammaray gammaray-probe-qt4` in a pastebin?20:28
renn0xtk9https://pastebin.com/JQaBhS2k20:30
naccrenn0xtk9: and `apt-cache policy libqt5core5a` ?20:31
fedorafannacc?20:32
naccfedorafan: ok, you should be ok to reboot into 4.10.0-3220:32
fedorafanok20:32
fedorafanno grub menu20:33
renn0xtk9nacc https://pastebin.com/ZCLPYALP20:33
naccrenn0xtk9: right, don't use PPAs :)20:34
naccrenn0xtk9: you're using something from neon20:34
naccrenn0xtk9: and mixing it with other stuff, just normal neon breakage20:34
fedorafanits booted up20:34
fedorafanbut dont know what kernel20:35
naccfedorafan: `uname -r`20:35
fedorafanok20:35
fedorafan4.10.0-32-generic20:35
naccfedorafan: looks good20:36
fedorafannow?20:36
naccfedorafan: i think you did something by hand to your /boot so i'm not sure autoremove will work properly for reomving the 4.8 kerenl, you can do that by hand. And you can remove the older 4.10 kernel if -32 is working20:36
fedorafanthat is too much for me for now20:36
fedorafanI would like to keep 4.820:37
fedorafanthat worked good20:37
naccfedorafan: 4.8 is no longer supported20:37
fedorafanok20:37
fedorafanbut I want to got it as backup20:37
naccfedorafan: and you're on 4.10 so why would you want to keep 4.8?20:37
fedorafanbecause it worked good20:38
naccfedorafan: then you probably should pin it by installing that kernel package manaully20:38
fedorafanhow to20:38
naccfedorafan: something like `sudo apt-get install linux-image-extra-4.8.0-58-generic`20:39
fedorafanok20:39
renn0xtk9nacc I trief to download the deb pkg and sudo dpkg -i but had same issue20:39
naccrenn0xtk9: yes, you have a PPA providing a broken package.20:39
naccrenn0xtk9: remove the ppa, or contact the owner to fix their package20:40
ducassenacc: isn't -extra just modules, not the actual kernel?20:40
naccducasse: erp, yes20:40
naccfedorafan: sorry, not -extra, you'll want 'linux-image-4.8.0-58-generic'20:40
naccducasse: i think -extra will pull in -image if not already installed, but you're right, for marking, wont' help20:40
fedorafanoh I did sorry20:40
renn0xtk9nacc if i remove the ppa, will it remove the packages already installed associated to it ?20:41
naccrenn0xtk9: well, you want to purge the ppa, yes20:41
fedorafanhttps://pastebin.com/sKfK4a9Z20:41
naccrenn0xtk9: othewrise, you can be in a weird state20:41
apb1963ubuntu 16.04; mtr has been indicating packet loss to 8.8.8.8; As the errors are all at my router, I disconnected it and plugged directly into the cable modouter.  Doing so fails to give me an IP address.  Returning to the original config (with router plugged into modouter) works again, albeit with ongoing errors.  What am I missing?20:41
renn0xtk9I mean can I just comment the ppa out install gammaray and uncomment it20:41
renn0xtk9hmm okay. well but then purge it will probably remove most of my DE20:41
naccrenn0xtk9: no, because it won't uninstall the broken package20:41
renn0xtk9hmm shit20:42
naccrenn0xtk9: then tell neon to build a new version of gammaray20:42
fedorafanwhat is extra and what to do now?20:42
naccrenn0xtk9: that they don't is a bug in their repository20:42
naccfedorafan: you can remove -extra and install the one without -extra20:42
fedorafanso again without extra20:42
naccfedorafan: extra is just extra modules, which you didn't have before, s you don't need now20:42
fedorafanremoving them or its fine like that now?20:42
fedorafanI pastebind it20:43
naccfedorafan: your choice, you can remove -extra or leave it, but do install the base kenerl package 'linux-image-4.8.0-58-generic'20:43
fedorafanOK install without extra now20:43
fedorafanhttps://pastebin.com/ZjHuKK2T20:44
fedorafancan you explain what we do right now20:45
renn0xtk9 okay.. well still thank you  nacc ;)20:45
fedorafanI dont like making stuff by saying do that without knowing what is happening20:45
naccfedorafan: what do you want to know?20:45
fedorafanyou wanted to see what by ls -ahl /boot20:46
naccfedorafan: feels a little ridiculous, given that you ran some commands from google20:46
naccfedorafan: i wanted to see what kernels you had that you said were filling up /boot20:46
fedorafanok20:46
naccfedorafan: but your /boot wasn't full, and you had deleted stuff by hand20:46
fedorafanso it wasnt clean anymore?20:46
naccfedorafan: i don't know what you mean by clean?20:47
naccfedorafan: it would appear you tried to by hand remove files owned by packages20:47
naccfedorafan: that's almost never a good idea20:47
fedorafanI hadnt space left20:47
fedorafanfirst I manually erased and then by apt20:47
naccfedorafan: that doesn't work20:48
naccfedorafan: well, it didn't work the way you wanted20:48
naccfedorafan: you deleted a kernel you might have been in (it appeared)20:48
fedorafantrue20:49
fedorafanit did work but had to reinstall stuff20:50
fedorafandont remember well20:50
fedorafanwell as a smart system I would claim it sees there is not much space left it will not install kernels whatever more20:50
fedorafanthats not given20:50
naccfedorafan: that would be terrible and is not how apt works20:53
fedorafanwell otherwise I wouldnt have the problem of space20:53
fedorafanit did until it was full20:53
fedorafanstupid shit20:53
Bashing-omfedorafan: ' df -h ' tells a good tale .20:54
fedorafannow its fine20:54
naccfedorafan: you were presuambly ignoring messages (such as 'run apt autoremove' as you just pastebinned) and/or didn't configure your system to run autoremove for you (unattended-upgrades). I've been running the same system since pre-16.04 and have never had /boot fill up.20:54
fedorafanfine for now20:54
fedorafannot my topic20:55
fedorafanreally not thanks for all your help20:55
fedorafansudo apt autoremove right20:57
fedorafanI did so20:58
fedorafanand20:58
fedorafanhttps://pastebin.com/FSezbr4n20:58
fedorafan4.10.0-30 left20:58
naccfedorafan: i already addressed that earlier. YOu did some manual breakage20:59
naccfedorafan: and have to fix it yourself20:59
fedorafanok20:59
naccfedorafan: you can see if the corresopnding packages are installed or not, and remove them, etc.21:00
isantopSo, I'm having a minor problem on 17.10. Totem and the new settings app both have menubars. Anyone know where the best people to talk to about that are?21:00
naccisantop: #ubuntu+1 for 17.1021:00
fedorafanwhatever nacc good job thanks21:01
isantopThanks21:01
fedorafanso.I need to google again right :D21:03
thesebpossible to nicely run GUI programs (like audacity) on a remote  Amazon Linux VM?  ssh -X iirc?21:09
naccfedorafan: or rather than google, learn? I'm not trying to be rude, but it feels like you're not spending the time to educate yourself on basic maintenance21:17
fedorafannacc linux is just a playing ground to me for now and you arent rude21:19
naccfedorafan: ok21:19
fedorafanits nice to have guys like you in this room here nacc21:24
malinusI'm still figuring out systemd: Shouldn't all the service scripts i.e. network-manager.service, be in the /etc/systemd/network directory?21:37
tgm4883malinus: no, only ones you change21:42
naccmalinus: /etc/systemd is for configuring systemd, not, generally, for storing service files. What service files are in /etc/systemd/system are symlinks to /lib/systemd or to /dev/null (in my experience)21:42
oerhekscorrect, The default location for systemd init scripts: /lib/systemd/system But the preferred way to modify them is to create a custom script in: /etc/systemd/system/21:43
naccmalinus: see `man systemd` DIRECTORIES sectionn for some explanation21:43
malinusah thanks. I'm still reading man I just got a bit confused about that part.21:43

OnkelTemHi all22:48
OnkelTemMy camera doesn't work in Skype and Browser22:48
OnkelTemAny ideas why could that be an issue?22:48
OnkelTemI'm using KDE, 16.0422:49

antonmHi22:51
OnkelTemhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/25392483/22:52
antonmIs it possible to install Ubuntu on the 2017 MacBook Pro w/ touch bar?22:52
OnkelTemantonm: I like your approach. I once installed Ubuntu on a MacBook (that one was of 2013) and felt charm22:53
OnkelTemI first tried to convince myself that I can get used to MacOS. But no.22:54
OnkelTemtomreyn: well, seems like there is no my cam in that list.22:54
OnkelTemBut if I start for example Audacity and select there my cam as recording device then it works22:54
OnkelTemand currently the LED on the cam doesn't work. But when I record from it (in Audiacity e.g.) it's switched on22:55
oerheksantonm, good overview https://github.com/Dunedan/mbp-2016-linux22:55

oerhekswasn't there something with the vx-1000/2000/3000 .. bad drivers?23:01
OnkelTemit worked perfectly for two years on Ubuntu 14.0423:02
OnkelTemhad no any problems with it, ever23:03
OnkelTemNo I can't configure system to use it. I *can* use it in Audacity but it's not set as default23:03
OnkelTemJack on the front panel of my PC didn't work either. So now with this computer I have no any options to make a call or something23:05
OnkelTemAnd that's in two days before I take this computer and go in other town, where I have to work23:05
Jordan_UOnkelTem: Does the webcam work with Cheese or another modern, linux-first app (as opposed to Skype which we know to be a very poor port)?23:07
OnkelTemJordan_U: vokoscreen - yes, no any issues23:07
Jordan_UOnkelTem: Can you set it as the default audio input in KDE settings? (You might get better help for KDE in #kubuntu)23:08
OnkelTemcheese haven't tried yet, let me see is it gonna bring the whole bunch on dependencies23:08
OnkelTemJordan_U: I did. No effect23:09
OnkelTemAsked23:09
Jordan_UOnkelTem: What happens when you try to use the webcam in skype? Are you using it for audio and video or only audio? What browser are you using when you try to use a browser?23:11
OnkelTemJordan_U: it doesn't work in Skype. Having 5.4 beta for Linux. As you probably know they've removed Options things. The only way to change device now is to press (+) sign during the call (morons!)23:12
OnkelTemand there when I select my cam as video and audio devices - nothings happens23:12
OnkelTemmy camera first blinks its light (green LED), then it dims and it's over23:13

Jordan_UOnkelTem: What happens when you try to use the webcam from Chrome? Are you testing with skype's website?23:16
OnkelTemJordan_U: yes, I tried Skype website with the same result.23:17
OnkelTemJordan_U: Now I've tested it in Firefox and it's a bit different then it was with Chrome. It allowed me to select which microphone I'd like to allow for using23:18
OnkelTemand there I selected Microsoft VX-2000 cam. But the light on the cam was off.23:18
