=== hehehe is now known as hehehe_off === JanC_ is now known as JanC [05:44] hello [07:52] running a fresh (2 weeks old) install of smoothwall with 4 interfaces. one zone is my personal with laptop. purple zone is where my servers are. this morning my mail box stopped connecting, then my cloud box stopped too. i left for a dinner party, and as i returned, even my laptop can't connect to the firewall. i'm able to login but i need assistance with the commands to be able to see logs or even restore connectivity from the f [07:52] if i boot the firewall on a live disc, it connects to the internet fine, so i know the nic is working [07:55] The command line is locked down and the admin guide dodsnt describe how to enable then [07:55] Really stuck [07:56] how is this an ubuntu issue ? [07:56] I know.. [07:56] you know what ? [07:57] I dont know where else to go. [07:57] not here [07:57] smoothwall support would be a logical step [07:58] Ive had no luck with that. Yall have been so helpful in the past but ill leave. [07:58] thanks === hehehe_off is now known as hehehe [17:26] I bought a bunch of additional IP's for one of my servers, I added the IP's in the /etc/network/interface file and then checked the ip addr command https://pastebin.com/4nXyn3Nc, I can see the address on the interface eth0:1, after doing this, shouldn't I be able to use that IP to SSH back to the server? The original ip is on eth0, with no :0 designation [19:55] Green horn to servers, first chance to integrate a server at work, there is existing equipment and is believed to be server 2012 etc etc. Can you recommend a "good" solution for FTP server to support a small group, I have access to 1 PowerEdge 2850 currently with 1 cpu single core.... but can be easily expanded to 2 dual cores 16GB. Business size is 10-50 people. Also waiting on boss [19:55] on expectatations implementing gitlab/github/git_x_enterprise. Our office will have several hardware and firmware developers. Many thanks! [19:55] what ? [19:55] are you asking "what ftp daemon should I run" ? [19:57] I am asking for an ftp server solution that if audited by a tier one company etc will not laugh. We are in our third year and are still struggling financially so I do not have a big budget for this solution. thanks. [19:58] what sort of audit requirements ? [19:59] please do not laugh, but is ubuntu server secure enough with an ftp daemon compaired to a windows server? [19:59] ftp is as secure or as insecure as you configure it [19:59] no-one is laughing [20:00] what would you recommend for a small company? [20:00] not using FTP would be a good start [20:00] and it really depends on your requirements [20:00] what is an alternative? [20:00] why are you thinking FTP is a good idea for you? [20:00] im am use to ftp [20:01] what is the goal ? [20:01] what are the requirements [20:01] SFTP provides nearly all the familiarity, but uses SSH as the transport. [20:01] some of the individuals will not have access to our network [20:01] what does that have to do with ftp ? [20:01] and there are a number of really nice clients for sftp, like winscp, etc. [20:01] Gene_home: what is the requirements ? [20:04] we need an SFTP server, our tier one customers require us to use their infrastructure... but ask about our capability to essess how green we are. Tier 2 customers just want to ensure their data (code we develope) is secure. right now it is very difficult to share internally with the team. [20:04] we have several remote users and contractors [20:05] if you are using their infrastruture - why are you setting something up ? [20:05] you need to have a clear set of requirements [20:05] PowerEdge 2850 ... wow, that's some old kit to be deploying new stuff on [20:06] we do not use tier 2 customer infrastructure and must use our own from time to time [20:06] 2008 [20:06] Gene_home: ok - so get together a clear set of requirements [20:07] can you outline some of the questions to the requirements? [20:07] no [20:07] they are your requirements [20:08] thank you for the wisdom [20:08] welcome [20:16] Can you provide an SFTP daemon solution that supports most of these requirements? http://www.jscape.com/blog/bid/98893/10-Essential-Attributes-of-a-Secure-File-Transfer [20:17] are they really your requirements [20:17] or have you just googled for "common ftp requirements" [20:18] I googled because that was more productive than asking for guidance here [20:18] no it wasn't [20:18] is this really for a business ? [20:19] yes it is for a business, three year old business with limited funds. Not all business have huge budges when they start [20:19] this is nothing to do with budget [20:19] this is to do with you messing around [20:19] if this is really for a business, then you should have a clear set of requirements that you have to meet and maybe some optional ones [20:19] not "I'll google for 90 seconds" [20:19] big things have small beginnings [20:20] you're just saying random words now that have nothing to do with the disucssion [20:20] "kill two birds with one stone" [20:20] there you go, there is a response to your last statement [20:20] and currently we are using email which is painful [20:20] again, this has nothing to do with it [20:21] stop being lazy, and actually engage with your users / partners and build requirements [20:23] drop ftp, owncloud *kuch* [20:23] there is a prime example of how no requirements will lead to a bad solution [20:50] Maxb: can you recommend a newer server/brand for SFTP and/or Git lab? Thanks! [20:56] easy to find, Gene_home, https://about.gitlab.com/installation/ and some tips https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-install-and-configure-gitlab-on-ubuntu-16-04 [20:59] Nizumzen: Thanks for the second link! [21:18] any other good server refurb sites other than dell outlet and servermonekey?
