hellp | can I make things worse by playing with it Unit193 ? | 00:02 |
---|---|---|
hellp | should I look for a professional and pay him? | 00:02 |
Unit193 | Well in theory you could, but since you've already written over 700M to the drive...How large was it? | 00:03 |
hellp | xubuntu live cd is 1.3gb | 00:04 |
Unit193 | Sorry, I meant the drive. | 00:06 |
hellp | a, 8gb | 00:08 |
hellp | Unit193: | 00:08 |
Unit193 | OK, I'd go ahead and check with testdisk, never know what you might be able to recover. | 00:09 |
hellp | Unit193: is this tool gong to list filenames? | 00:10 |
hellp | going | 00:10 |
hellp | the file I need is 4kb big at most, it is a list of passwords | 00:11 |
Unit193 | hellp: Yeah it should, once you get to the right menu. | 00:15 |
hellp | i mean deleted filenames Unit193 | 00:16 |
Unit193 | Yes, as did I. If they're still there. | 00:17 |
hellp | i pray the lord.... only when im in a pickle | 00:17 |
hellp | have you ever lost a ton of data? how did you move on? | 00:28 |
Unit193 | HDD died, had to recover from either partial backups, reconstruct stuff, or just...Hoped I didn't needit too badly. | 00:30 |
hellp | Unit193: what does it mean if I plug a hdd , it spins, but nothing is prompted on the gui or listed on the media directory? | 00:44 |
Unit193 | Oh sorry, I was supposed to respond. Got busy. I'd check dmesg. | 00:57 |
hellp | is there a way to recover luks passphrases? | 01:08 |
hellp | Unit193: | 01:08 |
Unit193 | Uhhh, well you can try to brute force it....But.. | 01:09 |
Unit193 | !info bruteforce-luks | 01:09 |
ubottu | bruteforce-luks (source: bruteforce-luks): Try to find a password of a LUKS encrypted volume. In component universe, is optional. Version 1.2.2-1 (zesty), package size 11 kB, installed size 35 kB (Only available for linux-any) | 01:09 |
hellp | wait... | 01:12 |
hellp | Unit193: I dont mind leaving the notebook on for 4 months... | 01:12 |
hellp | im going to be back in 5 minutes, dont go anyehere!! | 01:12 |
hellp | im back | 01:19 |
hellp | Unit193, | 01:19 |
hellp | youwere saying about bruteforce it. I know the passphrase is longer than 20 charachters, but shorter than 35 | 01:20 |
hellp | even better, between 20 and 30 | 01:20 |
Unit193 | Good luck then... | 01:20 |
hellp | wait, what am I missing, you said "but..." | 01:20 |
Unit193 | Brute forcing isn't exactly a sure way, and if you've got a decent password then you're pretty much out of luck. | 01:22 |
Unit193 | Which would normally be a good thing, but in the case of recovery. Also if that's what's partially deleted, you pretty much have zero chance. | 01:23 |
hellp | this is on another unit, the backup copy: the backup copy is encrypted, backup copy has all other passphrases too | 01:24 |
hellp | hope I explained the situation better... I only need one passphrase | 01:24 |
hellp | to find it I mean | 01:24 |
hellp | Unit193, ill keep talking to you... | 01:26 |
lamduh | how do you reset terminal defaults? uninstalling ohmyzsh and I no longer have folder coloring when using ls | 01:49 |
lamduh | nvm got it...man zsh is rough | 01:57 |
pragomer | how can I have preview (thumbnails) for raw-photos in thunar? | 06:18 |
cassidy_r | hi there. i installed xubuntu 17.04. i see some problems with archive manager and document reading program, they dont have buttons on their titlebar, is it ok? i've tried similar apps in another distro and it was right there. can you help me to fix this please? | 08:45 |
hellp | im trying to bruteforce a luks passphrase with sudo bruteforce-luks -t 4 -l 20 -m 27 /dev/sda , but the shell prints: Error: either /dev/sda is not a valid LUKS volume, or you don't have permission to access it. | 09:44 |
hellp | the unit is a luks encrypted partition... | 09:45 |
Andrio | Why might it be that I can't paste into Java applications? | 13:30 |
Andrio | hm... | 13:34 |
Andrio | Apparently I can't paste into Java applications text copies from KeePass running under Mono. | 13:35 |
Andrio | But I can copy into IntelliJ IDEA from itself or Mousepad. | 13:35 |
Andrio | But I can copy from KeePass and paste into MousePad. | 13:35 |
Andrio | copied* | 13:35 |
Andrio | Good thing KeePass can type my password for me using xdotool also. | 13:37 |

hellp | wait, found it | 19:30 |
Unit193 | Should be in your path. | 19:30 |
hellllp | hi, what other network apps are there besides the standard one? Im looking for one with just one vertical bar | 19:45 |
hellllp | I forgot the name | 19:45 |
Unit193 | You mean besides NetworkManager? connman, wicd, etc. | 19:45 |
hellp | it worked | 19:51 |
Unit193 | What specifically? | 19:52 |
hellp | wicd | 19:52 |
Unit193 | Ah. | 19:52 |
hellp | if the passphrase I need is between 20 and 25 characters, how many candidate options there are? and, will I need less than 30 years to try and bruteforce it? | 19:59 |
knome | hellp, we do not offer help on potentially illegal actions like bruteforcing. | 20:08 |
hellp | thx | 20:08 |
tomustwo | Tried Skypeforlinux on 17.04 it worked on test call but no mic sound on call to land phone. it worked when I used the old Skype 4.3 version and unchecked the skype to control sound. | 20:27 |

xubuntu33w | Good evening. I am attempting to install Xubuntu 16.04.3 onto my desktop via USB stick. I can boot the stick and get a text-based boot menu. However if I try to select an option in order to install the OS, the screen will switch to another display mode (likely GUI), and appear to lock up. What is shown on the screen is alot of video artifacts, like rectangles. | 23:53 |
xubuntu33w | I know most distro's you can try using other boot command switches to work around issues. Does anyone have any idea or suggestions regarding this? | 23:54 |
genii | !nomodeset | 23:54 |
ubottu | A common kernel (boot)parameter is nomodeset, which is needed for some graphic cards that otherwise boot into a black screen or show corrupted splash screen. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 on how to use this parameter | 23:54 |
genii | Sometimes works, especially if NVidia | 23:54 |
