PolimatioHello there! I get a different SHA256 checksum from the one posted in the downloads page for the 32 bit version of Ubuntu MATE 16.04.3. I have already redownloaded and checked both the direct download and the torrent. I also re-checked the torrented file. Is it wrong?00:07
PolimatioShould I ask somewhere else?00:22
PolimatioI guess the number of people who use IRC nowadays is about the same number of people that verify their downloads... Thanks anyway!00:29

ouroumov_no problem10:00
DarkJarrishuh, thats neat10:02
ouroumov_DarkJarris, standard ubuntu channel bot function, works with a lot of languages10:05
DarkJarrisyeah, just looking through the channel listings, didnt notice theres a ton of them10:08
DarkJarrisi just typed ubuntu-mate and kept my fingers crossed :P10:09
mosasaurI have a weird question I hope it's OK10:15
mosasaurmy desktop is LXDE but I let nemo handle it10:15
mosasaurI have disable the lxde desktop handling10:16
mosasaurit's great but I can't seem to set a wallpaper10:16
mosasaurso what are the utilities mate uses to set wallpapers10:17
ouroumov_mosasaur, we use caja10:21
mosasaurouroumov_: what is caja10:21
ouroumov_mosasaur, the file manager10:21
mosasauroops10:21
mosasaurI thought you guys used nemo :(10:22
ouroumov_nope10:22
mosasaurthanks anyway. I wonder how I came to think that10:23
mosasaurI guess I was barking up the wrong tree, I should asking cinnamon people10:25
ouroumov_yup10:26
mosasaurbut now I'm here, can caja also handle the desktop?10:26
ouroumov_mosasaur, that's what it does in Ubuntu MATE10:26
mosasaurthanks!10:26
DarkJarrisSo, I'm not sure if this is a Ubuntu MATE thing specifically, or Ubuntu, or just Linux in general, but This time round installing Ubuntu MATE i decided to check the "encrpyt entire harddrive" option, when i turn on now, the screen stays powered off, I enter my encryption password and press enter (all blindly) and itll then boot up fine10:42
DarkJarrisif i press enter at the black screen, i get the prompt to enter my encryption key (along with a failed attempt because of empty password)10:42
DarkJarrisIs that something I can change? I'd like to be able to see what I'm doing :P10:43
ouroumov_DarkJarris, interesting10:45
ouroumov_DarkJarris, if I follow you can't see what you type in the first time only?10:45
DarkJarristhat's certainly an appropriate word10:46
DarkJarriscorrect10:46
DarkJarrisif i type in my password correctly blindly, the system boots fine. if i get it wrong, the screen activates and shows me a "bad password" style message, and a prompt to try again10:47
ouroumov_So first off that's an issue with the Ubuntu base, but I recommend you try and remove "quiet splash" from your boot command in /etc/default/grub and see if that's easier to see stuff.10:47
DarkJarrisalright10:47
ouroumov_(You need to use the command sudo update-grub after that)10:48
DarkJarrisGRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"10:48
DarkJarrisso just leave that as empty string?10:48
ouroumov_change that to =""10:48
ouroumov_yeah just remove quiet splash10:49
ouroumov_GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=""10:49
DarkJarrisalright, done, and sudo update-grub has been run10:49
ouroumov_should allow for verbose non-graphical boot10:50
DarkJarrisrighto, i'll give it a go now10:50
DarkJarristhat fixed it ouroumov_, thanks.10:53
DarkJarrisan odd issue, but easily worked around]10:54
ouroumov_DarkJarris, might be worth making a bug report for though10:55
DarkJarrisshould I file it with MATE or Ubuntu?10:56
DarkJarrisI'd say Ubuntu base makes more sense10:56
ouroumov_With ubuntu, I'd say against Linux because I don't know any better10:56
ouroumov_There's a chance it's hardware related since I haven't seen that before10:57
ouroumov_DarkJarris, what version of Ubuntu MATE are you using btw?10:57
DarkJarris15.04 64bit10:58
ouroumov_15?10:58
DarkJarrisyeah... i forgot to upgrade lol10:58
DarkJarrisdidnt want to wait to download the latest cause our download speed here sucks10:59
DarkJarrismeant to install and then upgrade, apparently i forgot that part10:59
ouroumov_You're gonna have quite a lot of download to do to update10:59
DarkJarrisjust my luck hah11:00
DarkJarriswell, i can leave it running over the weekend doing it i guess11:00
DarkJarrisi was on a broken OpenSUSE install before so at least i have a functioning system in the meantime11:01
ouroumov_You should really consider downloading the LTS though, 16.04.311:02
ouroumov_We have torrents available on the website11:03
ouroumov_I've just set my server to seed on the LTS torrents, I'd forgotten to do it.11:05
DarkJarrisive got 16.04.3 on my home pc, but this laptop i didnt have the dvd to hand11:20
DarkJarrisim planning on it though for sure11:20
DarkJarrishm, if i download the 16.04.3 via torrent, can i update from that?11:22
DarkJarrisi seem to remember some kind of "upgrade from dvd drive" option, but its been a long time since i looked at that11:23
ouroumov_Uh, I don't think so. I think it's better to reinstall, and easier if you have a separate /home partition11:24
DarkJarrisfair enough11:25
DarkJarrisquick google says that its possible but really prone to breaking because it ruins your dependencies and really not ideal11:26
DarkJarrisits also mostly older versions showing up, like 10.0411:26
DarkJarrisso im just gunna not risk it11:26
alkisgUpgrade from 10.04 to 16.04?!11:27
DarkJarrissorry, that was badly worded11:27
DarkJarris10.04 to 12.04, etc11:27
DarkJarrisold threads11:27
alkisgWhat do you have now that you want to upgrade?11:27
alkisgAh 15.04 it was up11:28
alkisgDidn't read that far up :)11:28
DarkJarrisim on 15.04 yeah11:28
DarkJarrisheh11:28
alkisgYou'd need to go via 15.10 first11:28
alkisgI.e. 2 upgrades11:28
DarkJarrisoh, that'd suck11:28
DarkJarrisi'll probably just clean reinstall in the end11:29
DarkJarrisi dont actually have much data on this laptop anyway11:30
alkisgYou can keep all the data in a subfolder11:30
alkisge.g. boot from a live cd and run: mkdir /mnt/backup/; mv /mnt/* /mnt/backup11:30
alkisgAnd then install, while keeping everything...11:30
DarkJarrisjust looking through now, the only file ive actually got is discord-0.0.2.deb11:32
DarkJarrisi hink itd actually take longer to do a backup, than to just download discord again11:33
DarkJarrisbut thanks for telling me thats an option that exists11:33
thomas_123Is anyone familiar with Aptik? Does it work in a situation where you clean install to a upgraded version of ubuntu or will it attempt to restore outdated packages that is backed up?11:34
DarkJarrissorry, nope.11:54
sixwheeledbeastI wouldn't use something like Aptik, probably use dpkg and apt.12:04
christian_hey12:08
thomas_123sixwheeledbeast, something like what is explained here? https://askubuntu.com/questions/9135/how-to-backup-settings-and-list-of-installed-packages12:09
sixwheeledbeastRarely need to do it, but that's how I'd go about it. Last time I had a list of packages I needed on top of the default ones and apt'ed them all.12:13
thomas_123sixwheeledbeast, what happens if you upgrade or if packages are upgraded, will it restore the updated packages or outdated ones?12:15
sixwheeledbeastA clean install when it rarely happens is normally the time I remove stuff I don't use any more.12:16
sixwheeledbeastAn upgrade isn't a complete new system. It would only remove any conflicting or unrequired packages12:17
thomas_123sixwheeledbeast, probably a good idea. I just wondered what happens if system crashes during an upgrade and you can't get it back. I had a machine with kubuntu that just had a large upgrade and it would not boot back into the desktop.12:18
thomas_123sixwheeledbeast, just want to be sure I have a good method in place to recover a system without spending all day re-downloading and setting themes and settings.12:19
sixwheeledbeastRecommended to take a backup of /home in case stuff goes wrong. Events like that are unlikely.12:19
sixwheeledbeastI am happy with MATE because I need to change minimal settings OOTB12:20
sixwheeledbeastSettings should be in /home anyway12:20
thomas_123sixwheeledbeast, true but in two weeks I have had the kubuntu upgrade crash the system and ended up destroying the grub on my laptop. Both I was able to repair without lose and the grub was user error removing another older ubuntu.12:21
thomas_123sixwheeledbeast, but I tend to fiddle with to much trying to learn what I can. lol12:22
sixwheeledbeastFiddling with systems you need isn't advised. Especially the parts required for booting.12:23
thomas_123sixwheeledbeast, I have 5 desktops, 2 laptops and 6 tablets ... so there is always a go to machine.12:24
thomas_123sixwheeledbeast, most everything is converted to linux or android at this point except one desktop and one tablet.12:25
thomas_123sixwheeledbeast, I just converted my main system to linux two weeks ago and ended up having issues getting it to dual boot with windows 10. I will eventually just remove the windows 10 anyhow but kept it until everything I needed has been transferred over.12:33
thomas_123sixwheeledbeast, I am very happy with the switch though. Only thing I miss is GW2 but have been so busy that I would not have had time to play anyhow.12:34
sixwheeledbeastI recall. I still believe installing the Win10 system in a VM would be the better option if you need it.12:41
thomas_123sixwheeledbeast, I think so as well. I have win8.1 in a vm and winxp for right now. I need to try win10. This is an Alienware machine and the os recovery disk does not seem to do anything. I downloaded an iso for it from dell but have not tried that yet.12:58
thomas_123sixwheeledbeast, I am not sure I will need windows at all once I get my password database moved over. GW2 would be nice but I could live without it.12:59
thomas_123sixwheeledbeast, I am ditching Adobe and don't use MS Office so not much else I really need.12:59
RafiLinuxHi all17:53
diogenes_hi17:53
RafiLinuxPlaying Sky Roque and it's free awesome.18:11
heisenberghello hello21:48
heisenberganyone here active right now?21:48
heisenberganyone...21:50
bobemaybe (:21:53
heisenbergyey21:57
heisenberghi bobe21:57
heisenbergim looking for directions to do internet conenction sharing21:57
heisenbergusing two wifi cards - the laptop internal one, and the usb dongle that is connected and working on the laptop21:57
heisenbergno access to wired ethernet21:58
heisenberggoal is to get internet connection sharing setup with laptop nic as the source, and usb nic as the one shared to other wifi devices21:58
heisenbergno clear way to do it on gui21:58
ouroumov_Hello heisenberg22:02
heisenberghello ouroumov22:02
ouroumov_heisenberg, I'm checking stuff out22:03
heisenbergthanks :D22:04
heisenbergim trying to read the onlince docs as well, the usual samples is using wired-->wireless, and wireless->wired22:04
heisenbergi tried doing the same method, but it seems that ubuntu thinks wirelss-->wirelss is not possible22:05
ouroumov_heisenberg, I don't see why it wouldn't be possible.22:06
ouroumov_I don't know what onlince is though22:06
ouroumov_Are you not using network manager?22:06
heisenbergim using the default ubuntu mate 160422:07
heisenbergnot really sure if this is network manager22:07
heisenbergbut i didnt install any other networking tool or whatver22:08
ouroumov_heisenberg, when you create your hotspot, you can choose the interface: https://i.imgur.com/rumZCdm.png22:08
heisenbergyup, we have the same gui22:09
heisenbergand i did choose the other interface22:10
heisenbergi chose the interface that is not connected to the internet to be the hotspot22:10
ouroumov_Have you tired switching them around? I seem to recall not all wifi NICs can do broadcast.22:12
ouroumov_Also, what have you done to troubleshoot? Did you look at the routes? Ping test? That kind of thing?22:12
heisenbergive tried switching them in the gui config22:13
heisenbergim not able to see the hotspot wifi turn on at all22:13
ouroumov_Hmm, I'm gonna try it with an USB dongle that I never used for anything, gimme a moment.22:14
heisenbergthanks man for taking the time to help on this22:16
pencilcasehi im needing some help22:18
ouroumov_hi pencilcase22:19
ouroumov_heisenberg, yeah I can't immediately get it to work either, will try a bit more stuff after I eat.22:30
heisenberghaha22:31
heisenbergi mean that in a good comforting way for both of us :)22:31
heisenbergi thought i was crazy22:31
heisenbergthanks so much ouroumov22:32
ouroumov_Before I forget: did you make sure there was no network conflict? Default network for a connection sharing is 10.42.0.0/24 with the router @ 10.42.0.122:32
heisenbergi dont want to mess with some older posts about using Firestarter - there was a note that its no longer maintained22:32
heisenbergmy internet source wifi gets 192.168.200.x22:33
ouroumov_So no conflict, okay.22:34
ouroumov_heisenberg, still no joy here23:36
heisenbergits ok mate23:37
heisenbergi think ill boot to windows later :D23:37
heisenbergmy goal is to packet capture data transmitted by my phone23:37
heisenbergim pretty sure ethernet to wifi will work just fine, but im too lazy to run a cable from laptop to wifi router :D23:38
heisenbergat least im not crazy :D23:38
heisenbergbut many many thanks for your time23:38
ouroumov_Ethernet to wifi works just fine indeed23:39
heisenbergreally appreciate your looking into this man23:40
ouroumov_But this should work too, there's no good reason why not23:40
heisenbergyou have a good weekend mate23:40
ouroumov_thanks, you too23:40
