Desez2tpunkZeloZelos, I updated everything after a fresh install. It was doing it before the updating, and after.00:22
ZeloZelossounds like you may have some sort of hardware issue, try this, start a live session and see what happens00:22
Bashing-omlinuxnoob011: Yeah, was watching the travails :) .. What have we now for a link ' sudo ip link show up ' ?00:22

ubottuDesez2tpunk: Ubuntu Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) was the 25th release of Ubuntu.  Support ended on July 20th, 2017. See !eol, !eolupgrade and http://ubottu.com/y/yakkety00:23
Desez2tpunkBashing-om, I understand that support had ended for it on July, however that should not make "Internel system" errors pop up constantly should it?00:25

linuxnoob011Bashing-om, https://pastebin.com/8VXZg6b800:26
Desez2tpunkleftyfb, it was a fresh install when I first noticed it was having the issues. Then I updated the apps, still had the issue. I have been using it for a week now with the pop-ups coming up randomly, but frequently.00:27
Bashing-omlinuxnoob011: Moving on along ' cat /etc/network/interfaces ' .00:28

linuxnoob011Desez2tpunk, ubuntu not terribly large. if you can go to a friend's place and use his/her wifi, you can probs fit it on your phone and then usb it back to the relevant comp00:31

duckle-kiwiHey there. I'm having some issues installing ubuntu 17.0400:40
duckle-kiwiI've had ubuntu installed on one of my two SSDs for a while, with windows on the other00:40
duckle-kiwiI also have two HDDs, one 2 TB and one 3TB00:41
duckle-kiwiI want to install 17.04 to a 500gb partition on my 2TB drive, freeing up my second ssd00:41
duckle-kiwito do this I've formatted the ssd, and partitioned the drive so that it has my 500gb partion, and a ~700MB fat32 partition with the boot flag, as I understand that is needed for uefi00:43
duckle-kiwiwhich drive do I set for the bootloader?00:43
Bashing-omlinuxnoob011: Houston - We have a problem . My result : http://termbin.com/3rbi . So why is the wired interface not given in your output ... hummmmm .00:43
duckle-kiwido I set it to /dev/sdb or /dev/sdb2 ?00:43
linuxnoob011Bashing-om, indicator lights are on. solid green, flashing orange/yellow. have tried various ports on router and various ethernet cables00:44
linuxnoob011the current ethernet port and cable is confirmed working on another computer that also has a new-ish install of 16.0400:44
Bashing-omlinuxnoob011: Seems then we have a config issue .. Lemme ponder a bit .00:45

linuxnoob011Bashing-om, sorry if i am jumping the gun here, but check out this result from dmesg | grep enp7s0: https://pastebin.com/zMj8AX6e00:56
Bashing-omlinuxnoob011: Woll do . At this point van you even talk to the router on the wired interface ' ping -c3 192.168.1.1 ' .00:57
linuxnoob011Bashing-om, is it cool if i add a -I enp7s0 to that command?00:59
linuxnoob011otherwise think it'll go out over my wifi device00:59
linuxnoob011Bashing-om, ping -I enp7s0 -c3 192.168.1.1: https://pastebin.com/FnDxCmFb01:00
linuxnoob011Bashing-om, also, an interesting tidbit. when i ran the ping command explicitly over the wired interface, my wifi dropped momentarily01:02
linuxnoob011this has been an issue for me, i think--namely, when my ethernet is active, my wifi drops. originally, the drop was permanent, but this time was just temporary (presumbaly becasue we fixed the issue that stopped me from reconnecting to the AP after getting disconnected)01:03
Bashing-omlinuxnoob011: think'n again .01:04
linuxnoob011all good, Bashing-om--I super appreciate it. I've been hitting my head against the wall for almost a week trying to sort this crap out01:04
Bashing-omlinuxnoob011: As is now .. not talking to the router . Let me see what results if I pink explictly with my active NIC ( as I have 3 ) .01:12
linuxnoob011Bashing-om, I have a usb ethernet device i can plug in if that'd somehow be helpful. would be a tomorrow thing as i have to locate a linux driver for it. but my sense is it wouldn't tell us much about why the native ethernet port is being a pain01:15
linuxnoob011LOL, just got an alert from my network manager that the ethernet device is disconnected, Bashing-om. like a random alert that just popped up without my doing anything01:17
Bashing-omlinuxnoob011: Naw, let is not make it more complex than is now . Is the local loop good ' ping -c3 127.0.0.1 ' ?01:18
linuxnoob011yes, that ping works fine over my wifi device (which it defaults to, i think, when I enter the cmd as you gave it), although it does not work over my ethernet device, and once again, killed my wifi when i ran it over the ethernet device (i.e., ran "ping -I enp7s0 -c3 127.0.0.1"01:20
Bashing-omlinuxnoob011: Is there a reason for fios-router.home ? As in my case my router serves .01:20
linuxnoob011Bashing-om, I did not manually add it01:20
linuxnoob011Bashing-om, if you have a handy command to get rid of it, happy to do so. forget the right way to edit that file01:23
Bashing-omlinuxnoob011: K . I put that back on the back burner but keep it in mind . If you turn WIFI off, then on wired can you ping the router ?01:23

ilker I've got this card as discrete gpu: Topaz XT [Radeon R7 M260/M265] and  got a "!!! Unknown header type 7f" in lspci08:51
hateballilker: can you try rebooting and picking an older kernel in grub?08:58
woenxHi. I've observed a curious behavior on my ubuntu machine08:59
woenxwhen I access a network folder (in the default file browser) and leave it unnatended for a while, it automatically goes to the parent behavior09:00
ilkerhateball, sadly, older kernel causes too. I handled system upgrade with chroot on live medium and it was happening even before apt upgrade09:00
woenxthis keeps happening until the browser leaves the network folder completely09:00
ilkerI think this problem is related to 4.4, sad09:02
hateballilker: you could try a mainline kernel I guess09:02
hateballjust to see if it is that, but I dunno what else it'd be other than the kernel09:02
ilkerI guess temporary solution is to blacklist amdgpu module09:03
hateballilker: hmmm, if you installed with .3 it should have pulled in 4.10 I think...09:04

akikinstalling xserver-xorg-input-libinput was a solution before for being able to keep two fingers on a clickpad and still being able to move the mouse cursor. it doesn't work any more in 16.04. any ideas on how to solve that?09:07
oerheksilker, i find lot of simular bugs, but no solution. maybe hateball is right, try a newer ubuntu/kernel, 17.04 gives kernel 4.1009:08
hateballilker: you can install linux-generic-hwe-16.04 which should get you 4.1009:08
hateballilker: see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack09:10

ubottuLaunchpad bug 1026046 in xserver-xorg-input-synaptics (Ubuntu) "Missing support for thumb resting on bottom of clickpad" [Medium,In progress]10:57
akikinstalling xserver-xorg-input-libinput-hwe-16.04 didn't fix it, though10:58
akikand there's a dependency problem with xserver-xorg-input-libinput10:58
oerheksakik, did you see the last 2 posts on that bugreport?11:02
akikoerheks: yes but xserver-xorg-input-libinput-hwe-16.04 doesn't fix it. and the last one is about debian11:03
akiki used that package in 15.10 and it fixed it there11:03
oerheksthe post before that too? this sounds promissing .. https://askubuntu.com/questions/649103/proper-touchpad-thumb-palm-detection-with-libinput11:06
akikthere's some kind of problem with the files that get installed into /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d between the libinput and synaptics files11:22
akikif i remove the synaptics files from there and leave the libinput file there, it fixes my problem but disables the synaptics driver11:23
akikmaybe it's ok and now i need to find the configuration for libinput to disable the clickpad bottom area so that clicking doesn't move the mouse cursor11:25
akikactually this fixed the bottom area problem too. although now mouse movement is much slower than before11:28
akikso what i did was install xserver-xorg-input-libinput-hwe-16.04 and remove 51-synaptics-quirks.conf and 70-synaptics.conf from /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d11:30

saryfishcooker: what fingerprint are you referring to!12:29
brainwashakik: obviously it cannot12:29
akikbrainwash: i think there should be some kind of trigger to disable synaptics if you want to use libinput12:30
brainwashakik: newer ubuntus use libinput by default I think12:30
brainwashakik: I'd think that those two packages would conflict12:31
akikbrainwash: there was no conflict on 16.0412:31
saryrealies_: What! do you care to rephrase that?12:31
brainwashakik: as in, you can have only one of them installed at the same time12:32

realies_TJ-, sure, prolly need to redo it as i just formated it from the live distro12:35
fishcookerif imon 17.04 then do-release-upgrade it what release i will get next?12:35
TJ-realies_: generally it helps to pre-prepare the USB device so you can pre-emptively edit the partition table to recover the free space (by shrinking the installer partition to the size of the ISO)12:36
akikbrainwash: if i try to remove xserver-xorg-input-synaptics-hwe-16.04, apt-get also wants to remove xserver-xorg-input-all-hwe-16.0412:37
akiki'm not sure if i want to do that :P12:37
TJ-realies_: but I have done it on a booted live USB a few times; it's tricky though, better to pre-prepare12:37
fishcookerlet's say i want to upgrade to 17.10 from 17.04 what should i do12:37
realies_so u can't load the content of the live distro to a ramdisk and install from there?12:37
brainwashakik: input-all is a meta package which pulls in other packages12:38
brainwashakik: package12:38
akikbrainwash: is it safe to remove?12:38
brainwashakik: I think yes. I don't have it anymore12:39
brainwashakik: here on 17.10 it only pulls in xserver-xorg-input-libinput, and xserver-xorg-input-wacom as recommended package12:40
TJ-realies_: if you've sufficient RAM you could create a ramdisk loop device, install into that, then as the very last step 'dd' it onto the raw USB device and then immediately reboot.12:40
realies_geez :)12:41
realies_i gotta redo the flash drive i guess, just formated it12:41
realies_assuming the installer would be copying from there12:41
akikbrainwash: ok i removed xserver-xorg-input-all-hwe-16.04 and xorg still working12:41
TJ-realies_: 'dd' the ISO onto the USB (you've probably already done that). Use 'gdisk' to inspect the partition table. Find out how much space the ISO is using, and compare that to the actual ISO file size. Determine the free space then use 'gdisk' to shrink the partition containing the installer to slighlty larger than the ISO file. With the free space create new partition(s) for installing into, then reboot.12:43
TJ-The installer can then be pointed to the USB device's free-space partitions using manual partitioning12:43
TJ-realies_: once you've booted the installed system successfully after doing the install, you can delete the installer partition and re-use that partition. If you install using LVM then you can simply add that partition to the existing volume group and it will be available to use12:45

MrokiiHello. Some time ago my system froze a few times (most probably due to a faulty motherboard). I had to use the reset button to restart. After one of these freezes graphical glitches started to appear (sometimes green squares all over the screen, sometimes the screen is totally distorted. I wonder if there is a problem with my graphics card (unlikely I think, as I had no graphical glitches before the freezes)14:57
Mrokiior if some system files got damaged. I have replaced the motherboard, cpu and RAM btw, so the only remaining old hardware is the graphics card.14:57
MrokiiMy question is if there is a way to repair the system, maybe by overwriting / reinstalling the system without losing the other things I've installed meanwhile.14:58
EriC^^Mrokii: try a live usb and see how it works14:58
EriC^^Mrokii: you can get a list of installed packages and backup your data and clean install14:59
MrokiiI can do that. But I guess I'll have to reinstall the nvidia-drivers there, to make sure that it isn't a graphics cards problem.14:59
MrokiiEriC^^: I have my home-folder on another partition, so I'd only have to get a list of the installed packages I assume.15:00
EriC^^Mrokii: you can't do that in a live usb, they get loaded on boot time and when you restart they'll be gone15:00
EriC^^Mrokii: yeah15:00
MrokiiEriC^^: Well, the drivers would be installed (and used I presume?) as long as I don't reboot.15:01

netsrotHi, how do change keybindings in weston on ubuntu? I think I need to recompile weston for that. Is there any good guides for that?16:43
brainwashnetsrot: please ask in #wayland16:46
ducassenetsrot: afaik you can only configure the binding modifier16:47
brainwashnetsrot: weston is more like a demo only. I suggest using a proper wayland compositor16:47
ducassenetsrot: if you search phoronix they've had an article listing many wayland compositors16:49
C_minusI'm following this: https://www.tecmint.com/photorec-recover-deleted-lost-files-in-linux/ is there any way to restrict search to a particular directory?16:50
frostschutzC_minus, photorec has no concept of directories16:58
C_minusfrostschutz: Sorry I kind of get that, I'll just be patient.16:58
lotuspsychjeC_minus: you can save time, by adding extensions you want to scan on .doc .jpg etc17:02
lotuspsychjeC_minus: scanning whole drive on all filetypes is a big job on large drives17:03
C_minuslotuspsychje: I'm currently only looking for my most crucial files which thankfully happen to all be .zips. I'll do other file types later. Thank you for the advice.17:04
lotuspsychjeC_minus: no sweat i use photorec alot myself17:06
C_minuslotuspsychje: The background is: in an unprecedented fit of stupidity I formatted my Win7 partition from inside Ubuntu. Not so bothered about the loss of the OS, but I had a few files I'd like to recover.17:08
lotuspsychjeC_minus: photorec is real decent, if it cant find your data back, its lost :p17:08
netsrotbrainwash and ducasse: I really want to use weston. Changing the keybindings in the source file seems easy as long as I can find a guide on how to build it in ubuntu.17:09
C_minuslotuspsychje: I fear I might run out of space on this LiveUSB soon. For my next photorec search, am I able to write the recovered files onto an external harddruve instead?17:11
lotuspsychjenetsrot: can this help? https://wayland.freedesktop.org/ubuntu16.04.html17:11
lotuspsychjeC_minus: yeah plugin your external before lauching photorec and choose destination17:12
arch-nemesisC_minus, You can also copy files to a remote SSH server or something since you're running out of space. But yeah, accidently formatting over a drive is one of the worst things that can happen17:14
netsrotlotuspsychje: I'm using ubuntu 17.10 so a 16.04 guide might be a bit old. was that even before systemd?17:14

ghostnik11i just installed ubuntu 15.10 on to a asus t100 and had it whipe the entire windows partition on the internal 32gb hard. now i need to tell it where grub is and i can't do that17:27
naccghostnik11: 15.10 is eol, as well17:27
ghostnik11i know that the filesystem is at hd1,gpt2 but when i root hd1,gpt2 it says root not found17:27
ghostnik11nacc: i followed these instruction: http://www.jfwhome.com/2016/01/04/latest-steps-to-install-ubuntu-on-the-asus-t100ta/17:28
ghostnik11nacc: the installation told me that it failed to install the bootloader so after that i just restarted it and went on with the instruction17:28
naccghostnik11: that article is over a year old...17:29
naccghostnik11: but in any case, 15.10 is dead, you should (at least) use 16.0417:29
naccghostnik11: that is probably unrelated to your precise issue, but it would be good to try the 16.04 install, to see if it 'just works'?17:29
C_minusHOORAY! PhotorRec recovered my files!!17:29

naccghostnik11: e.g., linux (hd1,gpt2)/boot/<tab>17:39
ghostnik11nacc: yeah but this is after i followed the steps to first install it. like i went to install ubuntu selected to whipe entire disk and then it crashed and never finished so i clicked restart then i rebooted and hit c. now i am stuck17:40
naccghostnik11: 'crashed'?17:40
ghostnik11will try that command reall quick to see if it works nacc yeah it crashed as in when it said something about writing bootloader or grub it said it would send a report then after that it only gave me the option to close. i hit close several times and that window about the report never left so after that i selected to restart17:41
ghostnik11nacc: in the instructions it says it will crash17:41
naccghostnik11: that's not a 'crash', i don't think17:42
naccghostnik11: it's an error, sure17:42
naccghostnik11: but the instructions say to expect an error?17:42
akikikonia: i asked microsoft about that azure ubuntu 16.04 image. they replied that the sudo NOPASSWD: comes from canonical17:42
naccghostnik11: so you did it correctly, but then you need to do the fixup *exactly* as written on that page17:42

geirhaakik: hm, so they use an image of the live session?17:44

mindofmateoTJ- are you there by chance? Lol20:48
leftyfbI was going to mention that20:48
lankanmonit asked me and i said no20:49
leftyfbmindofmateo: I would look into installing proper display drivers20:49
lankanmonis there a way to recover from files?20:49
acresearchpeople, there is something strange in ubuntu 17.04, when I copy files to/from flash drives the copy speed starts fast then becomes very very slow... why?20:49
tgm4883lankanmon: are you able to remove mysql-server-5.7 ?20:50
leftyfbacresearch: depends on the flash drive and the files you're copying. Not really a symptom of the distro20:50
lankanmontgm4883: let me try20:50
acresearchleftyfb: this issue is not present using the same devices in 16.04 LST20:50
mindofmateoleftyfb do you know how I can enable persistent logging? Or something that I can look at when this happens again to see what the problem is?20:51
leftyfbacresearch: never heard of such a thing. Are you sure you're comparing similar file structures being copied? (number of files, type, size, etc)20:51
mindofmateoI remember someone mentioning that before20:52
leftyfbmindofmateo: personally I would look through logs in /var/log/20:52
mindofmateoThanks20:52
leftyfbmindofmateo: but as I said, I would start with video drivers20:52
acresearchleftyfb: yes, i am copying a 30GB database    same thing i have been doing but now on 17.04 it starts very fast 33 mb/s  then slows down to 10 mb/s20:52

lankanmontgm4883: so i removed it20:55
tgm4883lankanmon: removed or purged?20:55
lankanmonremoved20:55
tgm4883lankanmon: ok, are you able to install mysql now?20:55
lankanmonthe same? mysql-server-5.720:56
tgm4883lankanmon: whatever you were trying to install before. That was the package that was causing problems as it was trying to configure it20:56
lankanmoni was installing just mysql-server20:56
tgm4883lankanmon: ok, then install just 'mysql-server'20:57
lankanmonbut the one i had was the original ones that comes with ubuntu server LAMP image20:57
tgm4883lankanmon: if it fails again (which I suspect it might) we might have to remove the config files20:57
lankanmonthat is what i want20:57
tgm4883lankanmon: you want the original what?20:57
glitsj16acresearch: kernel from 17.04 might have a different IO scheduler set for USB devices.. have you checked what you're using currently?20:57
lankanmontgm4883: Yeah it failed: https://pastebin.com/XeZwuY2820:59
acresearchglitsj16: no, in terms of kernel, i am not that advanced of a user20:59
lankanmonso i checked /var/lib/mysql and it does still contain the innodb files21:00
mindofmateoleftyfb when I restarted, there was some dialog output on screen, something about Recovering journal, sda6, it was about 12-15 lines I think? It went away before I could take a picture or write it down.21:00
lankanmonis there a way to create a dump from that?21:00
leftyfbmindofmateo: that's an fsck disk check because it wasn't a proper shutdown21:00
lankanmonI just need the databases. The congig/users i dont need21:00
tgm4883lankanmon: might try purging that mysql-server-5.7 package then. It will git rid of the config files for mysql which could be causing trouble. On the other hand, it looks like during install it's failing to start mysql. So we could just start there21:01
glitsj16acresearch: try running "cat /sys/block/sdc/queue/scheduler" to check defaults.. exchange "sdc" with the disk your using21:01
tgm4883lankanmon: I'd check the mysql logs in /var/log and see if it mentions any errors21:01
glitsj16acresearch: in the output, whatever is in square brackets [] is your active IO scheduler21:02
acresearchglitsj16: its ok, i am not that advanced of a user anyway, i'll just go back to 16.04 LTS,21:03
glitsj16acresearch: no problem, 16.04 is much more stable anyway IMO, good choice21:04

tgm4883lankanmon: pastebin the log21:04
lankanmonits 27721 lines and all appears to be from today21:05
tgm4883lankanmon: then truncate the log file, try to reinstall again and then all the lines should be relevant21:06
mindofmateoleftyfb:  here's what I have in /var/log: termbin.com/tfth      I looked through `syslog` but I don't know what I'm looking for/don't see anything that looks bad.  There is a gap in the time stamps that corresponds to when I rebooted, and the last line before that says: CRON[11736]: (root) CMD (   cd / && run-parts --report /etc/cron.hourly)     Th21:09

tgm4883lankanmon: some quick searching suggests turning off innodb checksums. Did you shutdown/crash the database incorrectly?21:36
zht1I'm trying to get my radeon HD 7570 GPU to work with OPENGL 4.5, but the open source driver does not seem to support it. There is a linux driver for 15.04 available, but will it work on my 17.04 build?21:37
tgm4883zht1: probably not21:37
zht1So there is no way to get opengl 4.5 then?21:38
zht1without upgrading?21:38
tgm4883zht1: IDK, I was just stating that a linux driver (for graphics especially) for 15.04 isn't going to work with 17.0421:39
zht1Oh, okay21:39
aloo_shuI have an ubuntu 16.04.3 64bit install that quit when installing grub. how can I repeat just the missing last steps and avoid copying files a 2nd time?21:41
lankanmontgm4883: Well yeah... had a greyout and my unraid derver died21:42
lankanmonwhen it cam back the VM config filed21:42
tgm4883lankanmon: how important is the data in the databases?21:42
lankanmonI would really like to get it back21:45
lankanmonjust the data21:45
lankanmonI will be reinstalling a new vm anyway since i dont trust the integrity of this install anymore21:45
lankanmonbut i would like to import the DB21:46
tgm4883lankanmon: well as I said, quick searching suggests that disabling the checksums ( innodb_log_checksums = 0  ) will allow it to start21:46
tgm4883lankanmon: is this currently in a VM?21:46
lankanmonyes21:46
tgm4883lankanmon: ah, then I'd snapshot it and try setting that setting. That way, if anything goes awry you can revert the snapshot21:47

oerheksaloo_shu, so why did you use mint to "fix" ??23:01
