=== ken is now known as Guest72172 [02:21] hi ! I am getting a black screen every time I log into kubuntu. The cursor is works and a I am able to open all applications...but there is no desktop, no widgets, no panel , no task bar. Its just a blank screen [02:22] dev_: what release, and what graphics card & driver are you using? [02:22] did you recently upgrade? [02:23] zesy zapus, intel hd 520 [02:23] this is a fresh install [02:23] hmmm [02:23] I guess you could try nomodeset [02:23] !nomodeset [02:23] A common kernel (boot)parameter is nomodeset, which is needed for some graphic cards that otherwise boot into a black screen or show corrupted splash screen. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 on how to use this parameter [02:23] splash screen is working [02:23] I can even open firefox [02:24] play videos [02:24] when I minimize everything I get a blank screen [02:24] and there is no way to get back to those windows except using alt-tab [02:26] anyone there? [02:28] guys help [02:28] !patience [02:28] Don't feel ignored and repeat your question quickly; if nobody knows your answer, nobody will answer you. [07:03] Specify the driver in the first config X reads. [07:25] lordievader: I already created a 09 file in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d and according to the log it reads that first but it still assigns the evdev driver; http://dpaste.com/32HHGPM [07:27] Hmm [07:27] And the same result when you put it after the ev-dev setting? [07:32] lordievader: let me try that [07:36] lordievader: at least something happened cause my touchpad stopped working ;-) [07:38] lordievader: http://dpaste.com/2DV68E9 [07:38] Hmm, is that a good thing? [07:39] It tries to use synaptics: synaptics, but: ALP000E:00 044E:120C: Synaptics driver unable to detect protocol [07:40] yes, saw that [10:11] Hi folks [10:12] last night, kdewallet started asking me for my password, i keep hitting cancel, but it keeps popping up, and it wont accept my admin password or just me hitting OK [10:14] John85: and you havent changed password in any way? [10:17] ok, tried entering my old password and it seems to have accepted it, odd [10:25] John85: so that means you *have* changed password? [10:25] If so how did you do it? [10:26] through the user manager [10:27] Weird, I thought that would also change kwallet password if the wallet was unlocked [10:27] i have never used kwallet before though [10:27] John85: anyhow you can change the password to be the same if you open the kwallet manager [10:27] well it is used by default, if you save wifi password etc [10:28] and it unlocks automatically by pam_kwallet when you login [10:29] ok, changed the kwalled password [10:31] so kwallet manages all your passwords? [10:33] John85: apart from the user login yes [10:33] k [10:33] John85: if you use chrome or chromium they will save passwords there also [10:33] if you choose to remember on sites etc [10:33] i choose never to remember [10:34] gross [10:34] :p [10:35] i can figure out why thats gross, but then i havn't had my caffiene hit yet [10:36] caant* [10:36] i cant type either :p [10:37] changing subject slightly, finally decided to give google earth a try, was a little aprehansive after all the dramas with 14.04, but seems to work fine with 17.04 [10:38] John85: For me personally I prefer having a master password for kwallet, then use pwgen to set random passwords for various websites, but keep them saved still [10:38] only need to remember 1 password then [10:38] ah...good idea [10:39] my passwords i believe are fairly secure, but i still have a way of remembering them [10:40] 3 rules i use, no words, mix of cases, numbers and special characters, minimum of 10 characters [10:42] "pwgen -1 -cy -n 10" [10:43] anyhow, as long as there's no re-use of passwords things arent so bad [10:44] oh i used to be very bad for that :p [10:45] so what do the -1 and -cy mean? [10:47] "man pwgen" :p [10:48] means it outputs only 1 pw, that have forced mixed case etc, like you said [10:48] ah ok [10:49] I prefer using -By however, no ambiguous chars [10:49] like O and 0 [10:49] ill save that in my list of commands...which is getting quite long now :p [10:50] well it requires you to apt install pwgen, first [10:50] ye, saw that [10:50] i only went and eneterd my old password at the promt too lol [10:56] i need to go so some work, a bit short staffed today [10:56] bye for now === ubuntu is now known as Guest31804 [11:39] hi [11:39] so I think I killed some process and now Alt-Tab doesn't switch between windows, what process should I run ? [11:39] I mean I killed some KDE process [11:39] I don't want to reload entire KDE session, because I have run many software and I don't want to rerun them again [11:43] destop: kquitapp plasmashell && kstart plasmashell [11:43] should reload your desktop, without killing apps [11:43] by the way I use KDE 4.10.5 [11:43] kquitapp(21644): "Application plasmashell could not be found using service org.kde.plasmashell and path /MainApplication." [11:44] yes well, KDE 4 is... old [11:44] so you are on 14.04 then? [11:44] right [11:44] that is old laptop [11:44] it works I don't want reinstall anything [11:44] I think there's a similar command, but I dont remember what it was called in 4.x [11:47] I was running bluetoothd and I wanted to run simple-agent but it was saying "agent allready running" so I decided to kill "blueman" and "bluedevil" but bluedevil was restarting on its own so I killed copule of other processes and not Alt-Tab not working [11:59] old doesn't necessarily mean bad [12:11] nope [12:11] but it does tend to mean unsupported [12:24] Howdy folks === juboxi is now known as jubo2 === dv__ is now known as dv_ [15:32] Why you don't upgrade till LTS 18 months mature. Started upgrade to 16.04 LTS one month early and upgrade so flakey that locked up the machine, requiring run of dpkg --configure -a but which totally screwed networking so now machine is dead, unable to connect. Looks like will have to download and burn liveDVD to boot from and run some version of "chroot" to get back into the screwed distro to finish install.
