delinquentmeis there a way to capture the state of a number of terminal windows, and their sizes, locations and current commands?00:26
delinquentmeI want something that will capture the state of a number of terminal windows and that lets me re-open them all with their current states00:26
Fretegidelinquentme, so just trying have say 5 terminals reopen all at once?00:34
delinquentmeFretegi, Partially, yes.  Including the terminal height / width ... position on the desktop and the commands they're currently running00:35
Fretegidelinquentme, well a workaround for that could be the program terminator00:36
delinquentmeFretegi, link to the package?00:37
Fretegidelinquentme, lets you split many terminals into one window that you can save as a layout.  so say 6 terminal windows.  and should remember the window position00:38
Fretegiapt-get install terminator00:38
Fretegishould be in the ubuntu repos, is for ubuntu-mate at least00:39

sourceslayerHey00:55
Fretegihi00:56
sourceslayerIs there anyway to automatically disable the lock screen when I have a PlayStation controller plugged in?00:56
sourceslayerand enable it when it's not plugged in?00:56
Fretegimaybe a config file somewhere for that but im not aware of it00:58
sourceslayerI was thinking I could use  a script to detect it (DBUS or maybe if SDL has some event for it), but I would prefer something *simpler*, as well as the fact that I don't really have a clue about DBUS00:58
sourceslayerDo you have any idea what the config file might be?00:59

MarikosHey there.  Dusting off an old machine that had 14.10 on it.  I was able to use EOL Upgrades to dist-upgrade to 15.04, now I'm kind of stuck01:00
naccMarikos: just reinstall it01:00

naccMarikos: otehwries you still need to do the same to go 15.10 then 16.0401:00

sourceslayerIf you have a better solution than mine, I'd appreciate that.01:03
Fretegisourceslayer, interesting solution.  but you could also just quickly set it to not lock prior to gaming and then reset the setting to lock01:04

But I would like to create a regular installation instead of a live. I created two partitions, one for the rootfs and the other for EFI. Is this correct? TJ-jan64: it depends on how many core file-systems are defined too, because the MOTD usually calculates free space for the key ones rootfs /var/ etc12:55

kappa1helpwifi, don't use secure boot also15:19
TJ-helpwifi: instead of booting to the recovery, you could boot to a regular multi-user non-GUI session and then work on it. Gives you slightly more abilities. If you want to do it this way add to the "linux ..." line "systemd.unit=multi-user.target" which won't try to load the GUI part15:20

EriC^^just put systemd.unit=multi-user.target instead of nomodeset15:27

TJ-helpwifi: if you're able to use an IRC client right now from Recovery, then you can do the same thing from multi-user mode once you're logged in, and then you can access multiple consoles and switch between them using Alt+F1 (tty1) through Alt+F6 (tty6), so you could run IRC client on one and do diagnosis on another.15:33
helpwifiTJ-: my other laptop is ready but I'm confused about how to start the no-GUI part15:34
TJ-helpwifi: Here it is:15:35
helpwifiDellTJ-, EriC^^ hey guys its me15:36
TJ-helpwifi: Reboot, hold down the Escape key to intercept the GRUB boot-loader menu. Highlight the Ubuntu entry and press 'E' to edit it. Navigate down to the line beginning "linux ..." and add to that line " systemd.unit=multi-user.target" (separated by spaces from other entries)...15:36
TJ-helpwifiDell: Then press Ctrl+X to immediately boot with that option for this session only15:36
TJ-helpwifiDell: you'll eventually end up at a console "login:" prompt on tty115:36
TJ-helpwifiDell: once logged in first check the PC has network connectivity by doing a ping to some external host, then we can try manually triggering the GUI to start and then pastebin the log files15:37
helpwifiDellTJ-, alrighty.. I'm on the grub console.. i don't see any Ubuntu to highlight :3 sorry I'm a complete beginner15:38
TJ-helpwifiDell: what is the first entry in the GRUB menu you do see?15:39
helpwifiDellI have a grub terminal, there is no entry.. if i press tab, acpi is the first entry15:40

helpwifiDellTJ-, I lost the link you sent me.. because I am speaking from a new client15:40
helpwifiDellTJ-, I pressed Esc in the Ubuntu menu(where you can choose between ubuntu and windows) and it opened a grub terminal15:41
TJ-helpwifiDell: OK, let's assume this is command-line mode and we need to return to the menu, so do "insmod normal" and then "normal" which should bring up the menu15:41
helpwifiDellyup15:41
TJ-helpwifiDell: at which point highlight the top "Ubuntu" entry and press 'E'15:41
TJ-now you should see all the commands for the entry, so navigate down to the line beginning "linux ..."15:42
helpwifiDellTJ-, goit it15:42
TJ-helpwifiDell: move along the line towards the end of the existing options and add " systemd.unit=multi-user.target " (including the spaces to separate it from other entries) and then press Ctrl+X to boot immediately15:42

helpwifiDellTJ-, 22507097*16:26
EriC^^jpdj: you can try changing the ppa line to point to the older version16:26
EriC^^jpdj: who knows if it'll break anything or not16:27
TJ-helpwifiDell: do you mean 25587097 ?16:27
helpwifiDellTJ-, yes :)16:27
TJ-helpwifiDell: so the PC has an Intel and Nvidia graphics chipsets?16:30
helpwifiDellTJ-, so it seems :D It has a nvidia graphics card16:30
TJ-helpwifiDell: EriC^^ interesting, seems HWE has broken something serious: "[    63.071] (EE) Unknown chipset: NV137"16:30
EriC^^aha16:31
TJ-EriC^^: not good that even the backtrace is not there16:31
TJ-helpwifiDell: EriC^^ oerheks the pastebin if you don't have it already http://paste.ubuntu.com/25587097/16:31
helpwifiDellhow do you guys understand all this stuff16:31
TJ-helpwifiDell: practive16:31
TJ-helpwifiDell: in that log-file (EE) indicates an error, (WW) a warning, and (II) information16:32
helpwifiDellTJ-, nothing personal but what do you guys do for a profession.. I mean are you guys system admins or something?16:32
TJ-helpwifiDell: can you show us "pastebinit <( ls -ltr /var/log/Xorg* )"16:32
TJ-helpwifiDell: hackers mainly I think, know a little about a lot, or a lot about a little16:33
TJ-EriC^^: oerheks I think we need to look at some Xorg logs from before the HWE was installed to see what a good Xorg start looked like16:34
helpwifiDellTJ-, 2558713416:34
helpwifiDellTJ-, that is a really great quote :D16:35
jpdjThanks EriC^^, changing the source list file made it possible to apt install it. Only problem is webcamstudio has dependencies that are not installable. I'll have to try to figure something else out16:35
TJ-helpwifiDell: show us "pastebinit /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old"16:35
TJ-helpwifiDell: although I suspect that log will also be from a failed start-up too, going by its timestamp16:36
EriC^^jpdj: ah16:36
geetar1I was having trouble with libreoffice base's wizards and tried uninstalling and re-installing.  This did not work.  Then I thought it might be some corrupt config files, but I must have deleted something important because now no module of libreoffice will open.  The error states that libkdeint5_libreoffice cannot be opened.16:36
helpwifiDellTJ-, 25587155/16:37
TJ-helpwifiDell: also let's see if you're supposed to have the nvidia drivers installed "pastebinit <( ubuntu-drivers devices )"16:37
helpwifiDellTJ-, 25587167/16:39
oerheksjpdj, build it? https://github.com/WebcamStudio/webcamstudio16:39
geetar1^^ the error is http://paste.ubuntu.com/25587173/16:40
TJ-helpwifiDell: EriC^^ that's bad, it was previously using the FBDEV framebuffer driver to run the Intel device.16:40
=== yanome is now known as yn
helpwifiDellTJ-, ok16:41
TJ-helpwifiDell: EriC^^ that ubuntu-drivers output is incorrect since it suggests the nouveau driver should support the Nvidia chipset, but we know from Xorg log that it doesn't16:41
TJ-helpwifiDell: I'm going to suggest you install the Nvidia proprietary driver, which should also sort out the switching between it and the Intel chipset.16:42
TJ-helpwifiDell: EriC^^ see any downsides to adding the Nvidia driver?16:42
theablestmanhi I formatted my HDD I can't start from CD/DVD says error :unknown filesystem entering rescue mode... Grub rescue16:42
TJ-helpwifiDell: if EriC^^ concurs (wait for his response), the command is "apt-get install nvidia-375"16:43
Bashing-omtheablestman: And ypu did reset the boot device priority in bios ?16:43
EriC^^TJ-: helpwifiDell sure go for it16:43
TJ-theablestman: that suggests the system has still started from the HDD16:43
theablestmanno bios16:44
TJ-helpwifiDell: you'll also need to stop the GUI with "sudo systemctl stop lightdm"16:44
theablestmank ty16:44
helpwifiDellTJ-, alrighty16:44
TJ-helpwifiDell: once the nvidia driver is built and installed, you can then try again with "sudo systemctl start lightdm.service" - remember, if it fails, Ctrl+Alt+F1 to return to the console16:45
Bashing-omtheablestman: Every system has some kind/type of firmware to boot something/somewhre . But ya fot to set it .16:45
helpwifiDellTJ-, aye aye captain16:46
theablestmanOK it worked ty16:47
theablestmanbbl16:47
helpwifiDellTJ-, this time it shows no error or popup, just a blank screen with a "_" at the top16:47
TJ-helpwifiDell: that sounds like a boot failure16:49
TJ-helpwifiDell: press a key, see if the screen redraws16:50
helpwifiDellTJ-, nope.. nothing16:50
TJ-helpwifiDell: or try switching to another console, say tty2, with Ctrl+Alt+F216:50
marekw2143hello16:50
EriC^^hi16:50
marekw2143when installing Ubuntu with full disk encryption :)16:51
marekw2143can I choose any partition format ?16:51
marekw2143or have to use Ext4?16:51
TJ-helpwifiDell: did this "_" cursor come up after starting the lightdm service, or as a result of a reboot?16:51
TJ-marekw2143: as far as I know the file-system inside the LUKS/dm-crypt container is up to you (in manual mode)16:51
marekw2143ok16:52
TJ-marekw2143: but I seem to recall the installer does limit the choices when doing FDE. It uses LVM as well I think16:52
marekw2143I thought about something with compression on the fly16:52
helpwifiDellTJ-, I see the system running with low graphics could not detect graphics card, input device settings etc.. configure it yourself kind of error on tty216:52
helpwifiDellTJ-, after the lightdm service16:52
TJ-helpwifiDell: strange it started on tty2! Try Ctrl+Alt+F3 for tty3 then16:52
TJ-helpwifiDell: may need to touch a key to get the "login:" prompt on the new console16:53
helpwifiDellTJ-, I got a login screen on tty316:53
TJ-helpwifiDell: good... log-in, do "sudo systemctl stop lightdm.service"16:53
helpwifiDellTJ-, done16:54
TJ-helpwifiDell: I assume you've succesfully installed the nvidia driver package?16:54
helpwifiDellTJ-, yup16:54
TJ-helpwifiDell: do "lsmod | grep nvidia" - do you see it listed?16:54
helpwifiDellTJ-, I see nvidia written in red16:55
helpwifiDellnvidia xxxxxx x16:55
helpwifiDellwhere xxxxx and x are numbers16:55
TJ-helpwifiDell: good. Now let's ensure no outher GUI processes are running: "ps -efly | grep X" - see anything except the 'grep' command itself listed there?16:55
helpwifiDellTJ-, yup.. I see 4 lines16:56
TJ-helpwifiDell: You shouldn't see anything like this: "/usr/lib/xorg/Xorg -core :0 ..."16:56
helpwifiDellTJ-, wait.. I'll pastebinit16:56
TJ-helpwifiDell: if you do, then stopping lightdm didn't stop the X server, which would explain the tty2 issue and it not starting properly16:56
helpwifiDellTJ-, I see XOrg.failsafe. something16:56
helpwifiDelland I see a 2-3 Xorgs16:56
TJ-helpwifiDell: ok, we need to kill those, so do the "pastebinit <( ps -efly | grep X)"16:57
helpwifiDellTJ-, /25587254/16:57
TJ-helpwifiDell: now do "sudo kill -KILL 28818 28805" and then do "ps -efly | grep X" again see if all those except the 'grep' have gone16:59
amiritei've got a lot of stuff in /var/log/dist-upgrade. i assume there's an apt command to clean it? can someone tell me what to do before I rm -rf it?17:00
helpwifiDellTJ-, 2558726817:00
helpwifiDellstill these left17:00
TJ-helpwifiDell: looks like there's a fail-safe service running17:01
helpwifiDellTJ-, should I kill all those process?17:02
TJ-helpwifiDell: helpwifiDell they'll automatically restart, they just did - the process IDs changed17:02
TJ-helpwifiDell: actually, no, I'm incorrect, they didn't change. Yes, KILL them17:03
TJ-helpwifiDell: once they're gone try again with "sudo systemctl start lightdm.service"17:03
TJ-helpwifiDell: if you need to be back to the console Ctrl+Alt+F317:04
helpwifiDellTJ-, ok17:04
amiritehow to clean up /var/log/dist-upgrade17:04
TJ-amirite: is it just logs ? if so manual deletion is fine17:04
helpwifiDellTJ-, I killed it all but still the blank terminal with "_" on GUI17:05
Bashing-omamirite: ^^ But do not delete the 2 dots files NOR the directory.17:06
TJ-helpwifiDell: maybe it's on another tty? Try Ctrl+Alt+F817:06
TJ-helpwifiDell: in fact try F1 through F8 in case it's gone on another17:06
helpwifiDellTJ-, f7 and f8 are blank too17:08
TJ-helpwifiDell: hmmm. At this stage it might be quicker to try a reboot and see! "sudo systemctl reboot"17:09
helpwifiDellTJ-, ok17:11
helpwifiDellTJ-, it seems like it worked17:12
helpwifiDello.o17:12
helpwifiDellwow17:12
TJ-helpwifiDell: so eventually you have working WiFi and GUI?17:12
helpwifiDellTJ-, Thanksssssssssssssssssssssss EriC^^ you too :D thanks :D oerheks you too :D17:13
helpwifiDellthanks guys :D17:13
TJ-helpwifiDell: that was a baptism of fire!17:13
helpwifiDellTJ-, yes everything seems to work well17:13
helpwifiDellTJ-, can you summarize what we did for the fix? :D17:13
EriC^^!yay | helpwifiDell17:14
ubottuhelpwifiDell: Glad you made it! :-)17:14
EriC^^awesome17:14
TJ-helpwifiDell: for Wifi, installed a kernel version v4.6 or later to support the Intel chipset, and for the GPUs installed nvidia proprietary driver because the open-source Nouveau driver didn't support the nvidia chipset17:14
helpwifiDellTJ-, EriC^^ that's great :D I can17:15
TJ-helpwifiDell: and used console-mode boot to control testing of the changes17:15
helpwifiDellI can't thank you guys enough17:15

Sefid_parHello. Can we install ubuntu on a client using ssh?19:03
naccmojtaba: right19:03
naccSefid_par: that question does't really make sense19:03
naccSefid_par: you are ssh'd to a server and want to install ubuntu on it?19:03
Sefid_parI need a way to do ssh to the server then install ubuntu on it.19:04
Sefid_parI can do this with my os, Slackware19:04
TJ-Sefid_par: yes, if you use debootstrap and a chroot19:04
naccTJ-: well, taht will install it in the chroot19:05
naccTJ-: right? not exactly what Sefid_par said19:05
naccSefid_par: what are you actually trying to achieve? or why?19:05
Sefid_parnacc: You're right I think. The debootstrap seems to install it to a subdirectory.19:06
Sinopsisok, so windows now supports easily teaming nics @ the os level for redundancy and increased bandwidth...is this easy to do in ubuntu?19:06
TJ-Sefid_par: nacc: exactly what he asked :) See https://help.ubuntu.com/lts/installation-guide/powerpc/apds04.html19:06
Sefid_parTJ-: Thank you.19:06
TJ-Sefid_par: with debootstrap you set up your target file-systems, mount them to a directory such as /target/ whilst building the image, then set the boot loader to use those file-system(s) for rootfs and whatever else you've configured19:06
Sefid_parnacc: I want to install ubuntu to the client, and I have no Keyboard and monitor in it.19:07
naccTJ-: ah, so i was reading Sefid_par's request as 'replace the running OS with a fresh install of ubuntu'19:07
Sefid_parnacc: The server has nothing on it.19:08
Sefid_parI wanted to do PXE boot at frist. But it doesn't give me control on installation process.19:08
TJ-nacc: that's possible too :) I've done that. started a VM on the target installing ubuntu-server, and had the VM on a raw block device of it's host19:09
naccTJ-: i believe that doc creates a secod install, which will be ubuntu19:09
naccTJ-: second relative to whatever you are ssh'd into19:09
TJ-nacc: true, then you delete the original (other OS) when the system has rebooted into Ubuntu. Using LVM to manage the storage makes adding that other OS'es storage into the Ubuntu pool trivial with a "pvcreate /dev/oldOS; vgextend vg-ubuntu /dev/oldOS;"19:10

zarzar1hi i am getting a file not found for executables built on 12 LTS when i try to run them on 16LTS20:25
nacczarzar1: that seems totally expected20:29
nacczarzar1: unless you statically linked them20:29
zarzar1yocto linked them20:30
tomreynyou shouldn't use those binaries anymore since they cannot be getting any security patches (unless you bouhgt extra long term support from canonical)20:31

geetar1nacc: are you available for question?21:10
geetar1nacc: a couple days ago you started to help with a problem I had, but I had an appt and could not finish the issue21:11
geetar1I am trying to get libreoffice working again.  I seem to have deleted a necessary file and purge and install does not fix it21:12
geetar1I hate to start over and wipe my system for one program.21:12
geetar1Anyone else?  The GUI app start menu complains that libkdeinit5_libreoffice is not found.21:14

geetar1tgm4883: cache file from my home directory?  Interesting question.  This was 3 days ago and I can't remember where the cache files were, but I *believe* they were from the home directory.21:21
tgm4883geetar1: that's why a reinstall doesn't work. Reinstall's don't touch files in your home directory21:22
geetar1tgm4883: from a different admin account, libreoffice will not work and from my general working account, libreoffice will not start.21:23

xzHi there, I'm on Ubuntu 12.04 (server, no GUI) trying to update to 16.04. Apparently there are multiple ways of doing that. /etc/motd suggests I do 'do-release-upgrade', random tutorials on google suggest using 'update-manager -c' ( http://robots.mobilerobots.com/wiki/Upgrading_Ubuntu_Linux_12.04_(precise)_to_Ubuntu_16.04_(xenial) ) and also I know about apt-get dist-upgrade (assuming sources.list is configured correctly). What's the bes22:31
xzt method?22:31
xzAlso, I'm behind the proxy, I know it matters22:31
tomreyn!eolupgrade | xz22:34
ubottuxz: End-Of-Life is the time when security updates and support for an Ubuntu release stop, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases for more information. Looking to upgrade from an EOL release? See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EOLUpgrades22:34
tomreynxz: the latter is for you, but also be aware that you are late with the upgrade, you ran an unsupported release for half a year.22:35
xztomreyn: I inherited some infrastructure that I'm trying to fix now22:36
* xrandr yawns22:37
xztomreyn: ok, I'm running server with no GUI, so for me it seems it's down to 3 commands: apt-get update / dist-upgrade / do-release-upgrade22:41
xztomreyn: not sure if I should touch linux-image-generic and linux-headers-generic packages independently22:42
tomreynxz: the kernel packages should get upgraded automatically while you run these commands, just make sure both those packages are already installed. you will also need to edit sources.list as discusse don this page.22:45
xztomreyn: yeah, I have apt-get already fixed22:45
tomreynxz: so make sure you have current, complete and intact backups. then do "sudo apt-get update" + "sudo apt-get -f install" + "sudo apt-get upgrade " + "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade". since you inherited this system, if you assume there may have been custom packages installed, you could try the foreign_packages script from https://github.com/tomreyn/scripts to clean those up. finally, run "sudo do-release-upgrade".22:53
xztomreyn: what does 'foreign_packages' script do?22:53
tomreynxz: the page i pointed oyu to discusses this22:55
xztomreyn: I think wget from the script is stuck at proxy somewhere :/22:58
tomreynxz: you can set the proxy using the HTTP_PROXY environment variable22:59
tomreynthat's assuming it IS an HTTP proxy, not SOCKS23:00
xztomreyn: foreign_packages lists 941 packages23:02
xzmany of them say 'newer than version in archive', some also say 'no available version in archive'23:03
xztomreyn: and some say 'uptodate'23:03
xztomreyn: and for no reason /var/log/apt/history.log shows only activity since Sep 2017; sounds unbelievable that nobody used apt-get before23:06
xztomreyn: maybe the script is tripping over the old-releases ? as that's what I changed in sources.list to get apt-get up and running23:07
gunqqerso I'm trying to install ubuntu and when I boot to the USB and select what I want to do (try or install) it just goes to a blank screen and does nothing. I'm using the right version of ubuntu for my macbook pro and idk what to do23:07
tomreynxz: hmm, i don't have an eol system here to test it on, but 'newer than version in archive' would suggest that what sources.list pointed to when you last ran "sudo apt-get update" contains older packages version sof these packages.23:09
xztomreyn: well I changed sources.list from 'releases' to 'old-releases' so I can see how both of them have different versions of pkgs. That wouldn't be desired, however.23:10
tomreynxz: so the conclusion there would suggest you may not have run "sudo apt-get upgrade" and "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade", yet23:10
xztomreyn: sure, what do you suggest I do then?23:10
tomreynxz: did you run "sudo apt-get update", "sudo apt-get upgrade" and "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" before running the foreign_packages script?23:11
xztomreyn: nope, I haven't approach yet upgrading the distro23:11
Bashing-om!nomodeset | gunqqer23:11
ubottugunqqer: A common kernel (boot)parameter is nomodeset, which is needed for some graphic cards that otherwise boot into a black screen or show corrupted splash screen. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 on how to use this parameter23:11
xztomreyn: I'm right now doing prework, making sure everything is set to go23:12
tomreynxz: okay, well it's what i suggested you should do before you run the script23:12
gunqqerthanks!23:12
xztomreyn: oh, I thought I should run the script before updating the OS to understand which pkgs might potentially be broken (e.g. these installed using dpkg or some other way)23:12
tomreynxz: maybe it wasn't obvious from what i wrote at :53, but this was meant to be the order in which you run things.23:14
gunqqerBashing-om: I have a macbook pro which (as I understand it, whch is bearly when it comes to really technical things) doesn't have a BIOS but an EFI (or some combanation of those letters) how do I change  kernal options?23:15

kode54what's new in 4.4.0-96? I can't find a changelog23:18
tomreynxz: so my suggestion was to do the do-release-upgrade after running the script (but all other apt commands before that)+23:19
xztomreyn: it's doing dist-upgrade now23:20
tomreynxz: that's because you should have a clean state before starting the release upgrade and this script tries to verify that is the case.23:20
tomreynotherwise do-release-upgrade may fail.23:20

tomreynxz: actually show "apt-cache policy"23:48
xzhttps://pastebin.com/wcSffSvF23:49
tomreynxz: did you not say you had ubuntu 12.04 there? that would be codename 'precise', what you have in sources.list is 'lucid', which is 10.0423:53
TJ-tomreyn: there is both lucid and precise, both from old-releases23:53
tomreynTJ-: right. still, why lucid?23:54
xztomreyn: let's get that step by step.23:55
tomreyn(and yes, i missed 'precise')23:55
TJ-tomreyn: not been following so far, but presumably the system has been release-upgraded before23:55
xztomreyn: so lsb_releas -a says Ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS (precise)23:55
xztomreyn: sources.list is here: https://pastebin.com/6Ekz5RQZ23:56
TJ-tomreyn: best to find out which, if any, installed packages are from lucid :)23:56
xztomreyn: and it indeed points to some lucid stuff that I didn't touch as it says #to fix the error 404 ...23:56
tomreynxz: okay, so you can just comment out the lines containing 'lucid' off sources.list (and files in sources.list.d/)23:57
xztomreyn: in sources.list.d I only have openjdk-ppa-precise; as it's from precise I think I can leave it as is23:58
xztomreyn: I removed lucid stuff from sources.list, will do apt-get update23:58
