pablo_Hello! Using Lubuntu 16.04. I have a window that is way too big and doesn't fit on the tiny screen of a school laptop (1024*600). I can move it while pressing the Alt key but... Is there a way to force resizing?16:12
pablo_I already tried changing the base font size, from 11 to 9, with no luck.16:12
n-iCepablo_: resize from corners16:12
wxlpablo_: one option is to make the app maximized via openbox http://openbox.org/wiki/Help:Applications16:14
n-iCeI would resize from corners16:14
n-iCewxl: don't you?16:14
wxln-iCe: depending on the size of the window, no16:14
n-iCeI have done it, with alt move to the corner and start rezising16:15
wxln-iCe: pablo_ is looking for an alternative to that16:15
wxlthere is a <position force> option16:16
wxlcouple that with <size> and you're set16:17
wxlif you want absolute control, at least. otherwise, maximized will do the trick.16:17
n-iCeI see16:18
n-iCeanyway I'm not using lubuntu right now16:18
n-iCeI moved to Debian with i3, since I needed to sell my laptop, and I'm using an old one with old hardware.16:18
n-iCeWhich I'm not sure lubuntu will run smooth.16:18
wxli'm pretty sure it will.16:19
n-iCebetter than my current configuration16:19
n-iCe?16:19
wxlwhy not?16:20
n-iCemodel name: Genuine Intel(R) CPU           T2400  @ 1.83GHz16:20
n-iCe1GB RAM16:20
n-iCeWell, Debian netinstall with i3, is pretty slim16:20
wxlyou do know you can use i3 with lubuntu, right? not like openbox is very heavy weight16:20
wxl1GB is a LOT for lubuntu16:20
wxlthere's net install options for *ubuntu, too16:20
wxlthe wiki documents some ultralight options16:21
wxlbut if you like old packages, debian is pretty nice XD16:21
n-iCehtop says is using 100MB RAM16:21
n-iCeis it good?16:21
wxlis what good?16:21
n-iCedid not even think in using lubuntu :/16:21
n-iCewxl: http://paste.debian.net/988729/16:22
wxln-iCe: i've run lubuntu on 256MB.16:23
n-iCewhooot16:23
n-iCewith lxde?16:23
wxlwhich is to say those numbers you show are perfectly achievable16:23
wxlyep16:23
n-iCeoh my16:23
n-iCeand if I use i3 will even be more lightweight, right16:23
Notsonoblerecently?16:23
wxlit's not fast on a modern browser running javascript etc., but that's true of anything16:23
n-iCe11:23 < Notsonoble> recently?16:24
n-iCegood question16:24
wxli doubt i3 is much lighter16:24
wxli use awesome and it's not much different16:24
n-iCei3 against lxde?16:24
n-iCeyou say there is no much difference?!16:24
wxlnot really, no16:24
n-iCeok16:25
n-iCeWill try it right now16:25
n-iCeSo, lubuntu .iso?16:25
n-iCeOr any netinstall?16:25
pablo_@n-iCe @wxl, even maximized, it wont show the buttons that are in the lower part of the window, and there is no scroll bar. Corner resizing only allows me to make it bigger, but there's a minimum size. Maybe it's a problem of the application. Made with QT5, if that matters.16:25
n-iCewxl: is this ok? http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/releases/17.04/release/lubuntu-17.04-desktop-i386.iso16:26
wxlpablo_: try my suggestions with openbox and the <position> and <size> options. the link i gave gives you the basic syntax and there's a link in there that shows a commented config file showing you how to deal with the specific qualities16:26
n-iCewxl: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/releases/17.04/release/lubuntu-17.04-desktop-i386.iso16:27
wxln-iCe: yep, but if you want the lightest possible, you can use the mini.iso16:27
n-iCeis ok?16:27
n-iCeok yes!16:27
wxln-iCe: and actually i'd recommend the alternate installer if you don't use the mini.iso16:27
wxlhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/Documentation/MinimalInstall16:28
n-iCehttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/Documentation/MinimalInstall16:28
n-iCeyes exactly, I'm there.16:28
n-iCeBy the way, how much RAM would you set for this system?16:28
wxlwhy not use it all?16:28
n-iCesorry?16:29
wxlyou CAN limit it to as little as 256MB, but as i said, a modern browser with javascript running will be slooooow16:29
n-iCe256MB of RAM?16:29
wxlyes16:29
n-iCeI can set a partition with plenty RAM, that's not a problem.16:29
n-iCeThe think is, with 1GB RAM, how much swap will you give.16:30
wxlpartition?16:30
n-iCeOh, sorry, I wrote RAM, I was saying swap.16:30
wxlare you talking about disk space or RAM?16:30
n-iCeSorry, my bad.16:30
n-iCesorry, sorry, how much swap would you give to the system.16:30
wxloh well everyone has a different attitude about swap16:30
wxlbut i'd suggest using a swap file personally. double RAM is a good rule of thumb16:30
n-iCeswap file?16:30
wxlyep16:31
n-iCeI read partitions are better16:31
wxl> oh well everyone has a different attitude about swap16:31
n-iCei SEE16:32
n-iCe2GB then?16:32
wxlyep16:32
n-iCeawesome, done, mini.iso is in my usb16:32
n-iCedo I have wireless.tools in that mini iso?16:33
pablo_sorry, computer crashed.. couldn't read messages after " wxl: is this ok? http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/releases/17.04/release/lubuntu-17.04-desktop-i386.iso"16:34
wxlit definiately has the capacity to do networking16:34
wxlpablo_: try my suggestions with openbox and the <position> and <size> options. the link i gave gives you the basic syntax and there's a link in there that shows a commented config file showing you how to deal with the specific qualities16:34
n-iCewxl: awesome16:35
n-iCebrb16:35
n-iCebooting in lubutnu minimal16:35
wxl> pablo_: one option is to make the app maximized via openbox http://openbox.org/wiki/Help:Applications16:35
n-iCeIm in my phone16:35
n-iCeWow detected my wireless with no problem16:36
n-iCeI have internet so fast16:37
n-iCeDamnit16:37
n-iCewxl so debian are really old packages?16:37
n-iCeIt working fine16:38
wxln-iCe: the whole point behind *buntu is providing the LATEST packages from debian. in other words, their stable lags behind our stable.16:38
n-iCehttps://photos.app.goo.gl/JCLZ1AP2PffyxD0a216:38
n-iCeBy the way16:39
n-iCeIm installing ubuntu right?16:39
n-iCeIm using defaults partitions is it ok?16:40
wxlhttps://askubuntu.com/questions/1336/how-is-ubuntu-different-from-debian16:40
wxlof course it's ok. but you have the option to change it if you want16:40
n-iCeAwesome installing base system16:43
n-iCeThanks again wxl16:43
n-iCehttps://l3net.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/cmp-all4.png16:44
n-iCeHave you seen that16:45
n-iCeDone, booting into minimal17:02
n-iCeUhm, is taking more time than usual17:02
n-iCeAnd is not booting17:03
n-iCeIt is stuck here17:04
n-iCehttps://photos.app.goo.gl/orF4IFEsS9f9VlMp217:04
n-iCeAny idea wxl17:04
alex___hello17:27
n-iCeHi17:28
alex___heeelp my17:29
n-iCeask17:33
pablo_Thanks wxl, will try later.17:41
n-iCewxl: is using more ram17:59
n-iCeo.O17:59
n-iCewxl: ?19:00
wxln-iCe: did you do the mini.iso or the alternate? if the former, which packages did you install?21:01
n-iCemini21:03
n-iCeinstalled alsa, pavucontrol, xorg, i3, irssi and firefox nightly build21:04
n-iCealso gparted21:04
wxlbut you started with ubuntu-base or lubuntu-desktop, or what?21:04
n-iCeubunu base21:05
n-iCemini.iso21:05
wxldid you compare the ram usage of the individual components to your debian set up?21:05
n-iCejust compared at boot21:05
n-iCeand normal use21:05
n-iCeubuntu reaching the 800MB21:06
wxl> individual components21:06
n-iCeeasily21:06
n-iCewxl: might be because de ubuntu core is bigger than the debian core?21:10
wxln-iCe: don't jump to assumptions until you've looked at the individual components21:16
n-iCehow21:17
n-iCeI'm checking the general memory21:17
wxl`ps`, `top`, etc.21:17
n-iCeI check top says 900MB ram in use21:18
wxl`top`, just like `ps` can give you a total but it's primary purpose is to breakdown how all that memory is allocated21:18
n-iCehtop is what I used21:18
n-iCewxl: and all feels slower21:21
wxlbut you can't draw conclusions until you look at the reality of it21:22
wxlfor example, maybe firefox is slower? i don't know. you have to look rather than using conjecture21:22
n-iCeI take my conclusion of what I'm experiencing21:22
n-iCewell I'm doing the same, exactly the same that I used to do with debian21:22
n-iCefirefox, irssi21:22
n-iCenothing much more21:22
wxland what is the memory usage of each application compared to one another?21:23
n-iCeno idea21:23
wxlthat's what i've been suggesting you look at21:23
n-iCeI don't have the other os installed anymore21:23
n-iCeI removed debian of course21:23
wxlthen it's hard to draw conclusions, except to say that something is different.21:24
