Gallomimiai'm having an interesting problem for sure. i'm struggling with this system for a long time. finally got it to boot into emergency mode and everything is working except.... i can't get out of emergency mode02:07
kenrinYou exit and reboot as normal02:10
Gallomimiawhat's that? type exit??02:10
Gallomimiajust scrolls a log and then returns to the same message02:21
kenrinreboot02:22
Gallomimiahow is it you think that's helpful advice?02:23
Sweepyoface????02:23
Sweepyofaceuse the 'reboot' command02:23
Gallomimiai'd really rather not.02:23
kenrinIs it not?  If everything is working then rebooting should boot as normal02:23
Gallomimiait doesn't boot.02:23
Gallomimiaeverything is not working.02:23
SweepyofaceSo you need to fix the issue first02:23
Gallomimiaright02:23
Sweepyofaceyou said you wanted to get out of emergency mode02:23
Sweepyofacethat's how you do it02:23
Gallomimiaemergency mode is the closest to working i can get it02:24
Gallomimiai'm celebrating to see emergency mode, but i can't make it go beyond that02:24
SweepyofaceSo why did you ask how to get out of it02:24
Sweepyofaceyou should be asking how to fix the issue02:24
Gallomimiaso i can get out of it.02:24
Gallomimiathis is going in circles, much like this boot process02:24
Sweepyofaceif you ask a half ass question, expect the same kind of answer02:24
Sweepyofacewhat exactly is your problem?02:24
Gallomimiasee, that's what i expected. more questions, not answers02:25
Gallomimiai'm not exactly sure what the problem is. and where to begin?02:25
Sweepyofacerebooting is how you get out of emergency mode02:25
Gallomimiai've had this system limping for a long time02:25
Sweepyofacethat's what you asked, we answered02:25
Gallomimiarebooting is how i got into emergency mode02:25
kenrinDoes it say anything when you try to boot normally ?02:25
Gallomimiaso, if i do that, it's coming back to emergency mode02:25
Gallomimiano.02:25
kenrinAbsolutely nothing?02:26
Gallomimiai mean, it tries. there's logs that list02:26
Gallomimiabut it either locks up in a graphical grub, or i try to activate recovery mode, or it's a blank screen02:26
Gallomimiai have tried a lot of different things. it's always been so fussy.02:26
kenrinSo what troubleshooting steps have you tried besides going into emergency mode02:27
Gallomimianear as i can tell, i have the exact motherboard that no one should ever try to run linux on02:27
Gallomimiai've added nomodeset and ahci=off to kernel parameters02:27
Gallomimiaer... something02:27
kenrinHas it ever worked?  When it sticks at "black screen" can you get into a console tty ?02:28
Gallomimiasure lots02:28
Gallomimiatho i suspect i never had it working perfectly. there's always been some kinda problems. such as flakey usb302:28
Gallomimiathe black screen is always a black screen. changing to a console tty doesn't work. nor does ctrl alt del02:29
kenrinWell first you need to boot with no splash and see why it isn't booting or look at logs.   Without more information no one can help you02:29
Gallomimiathe emergency mode console gets me some access to logs02:29
Gallomimiahave you ever seen this message: Your system is not currently configured to drive a VGA console on the primary VGA device. The NVIDIA Linux graphics driver requires the use of a text-mode VGA console. Use of other console drivers including, but not limited to, vesafb, may result in corruption and stability problems, and is not supported.02:31
Gallomimiacause.... i have. and i'm reading some stuff about it. and i don't like it.02:31
kenrinThat just means nvidia doesn't fully support uefi as of yet.  It shouldn't have any affect on anything02:33
Gallomimiait should give me some advice on how to proceed tho02:34
kenrinNot really.  That message appears on 100% of people who use a nvidia card and uefi02:34
kenrinWell,  anyone who uses CMS anyway02:35
jerichowasahoaxCMS?02:35
kenrin"The Compatibility Support Module (CSM) is a component of the UEFI firmware that provides legacy BIOS compatibility by emulating a BIOS environment, allowing legacy operating systems and some option ROMs that do not support UEFI to still be used."02:36
jerichowasahoaxthat makes more sense than "did you mean KMS" :V02:36

MrHooperIs there any way I can use lxd with kea-dhcp4-server instead of dnsmasq?06:11
MrHooperI really like my kea-dhcp4-server better than the original ISC DHCPD06:12
alkisgdnsmasq isn't the original isc dhcpd :)06:13
Al_nz1evening peeps. I have a Ubuntu machine on a LAN which is also a recording server for some IP cameras, when I enable UFW the cameras cant mount the NFS06:15
MrHooperyes I know - it seemingly forces me to use dnsmasq06:15
Al_nz1disble UFW and all works06:15
MrHooperAl_nz1: this means one of the iptables rules is interfering with your NFS connection - check what iptables rules are set after you enable ufw, copy to a temporary file and then instead of using ufw add said rules individually yourself until your NFS is blocked06:17
tomreynAl_nz1: it's a firewall with a default set of policies, dropping inbound traffic.06:17
MrHooperAl_nz1: that way you can figure out exactly which rule is impeding your NFS traffic06:17
Al_nz1maybe I will start with listing rules06:17
MrHooperAl_nz1: I do not use UFW so I cannot help you but I am assuming it defaults to dropping all inbound traffic unknown to it06:18
tomreyns/drop/reject/06:18
MrHooperAl_nz1: if you want to be more future proof you can use nftables instead06:18
Al_nz1MrHooper: yeah looks like it. I think I will setsome allow all rules for camera IP's06:18
MrHooperAl_nz1: probably not a good idea to allow all for camera IPs but only the traffic the cameras require for recording06:19
Al_nz1MrHooper: I dont really know UFW or IPTables - I just want to get this going - so a permissive rule to trust the 3 camera IP's ought to do it06:19
MrHooperAl_nz1: iptables is the foundation of most linux firewalls06:19
MrHooperiptables/netfilter06:20
Al_nz1MrHooper: yip - not disagreeing there - learning it is also quite involved06:20
MrHooperAl_nz1: it isn't as difficult as you think - it just takes a bit of time, experimentation, and patience  - it also helps A LOT to understand netfilter logic flows which I cannot claim to grasp quite yet06:22
MrHooperAl_nz1: nftables is easier to understand actually06:22
Al_nz1btw ufw rule : sudo ufw allow from 10.1.1.20 fixed it06:23
MrHooperAl_nz1: good06:23
tomreynthat allows any and all traffic from that ip address to the ufw system06:23
Al_nz1yip06:25

DWSRHey everyone, I'm trying to install Kubernetes onto Ubuntu via conjure-up following https://tutorials.ubuntu.com/tutorial/install-kubernetes-with-conjure-up . When I SSH into the target box and run `conjure-up`, I get "the following arguments are required: spell". alsetemaHello people. I am running a live session of Lubuntu here, and I am having some problems with the IW command. I installed the kernel modules for my alfa awus036 ach and it works well. The thing is, it is detected by iwconfig, and by the ip command as well, but the iw command wont detect the device nor the interface, why can this be?14:12
davido_I'm experiencing issues with some windows rendering improperly. Not quite sure how to describe it, but perhaps a picture paints the words: http://picpaste.com/Screenshot_from_2017-10-10_08-17-43-KDI6sxYd.png14:19
davido_^^ Notice the calculator app, which shows the background through in the formula portion of the window.14:20
tomreynalsetema: so "iw dev" doesn't list it? what does iwconfig say about it?14:20
alsetemaIwconfig shows all the info, everything correct, iw dev only shows the integrated wireless device of my laptoop and its interface (wlan0)14:20
tomreynalsetema: what's the device ID (looking like [1234:5678]) of the "alfa awus036 ach" (in lsusb or lspci -nn)? hwich kernel modules are you using, where did you get them from, how do you use them?14:22

alsetemaRight... Unfortunately I cant try that right now but I will14:29
alsetemaI have another issue... The sound card doesnt seem to be supported14:30
alsetemaJust to be clear, im running lubuntu 17.10 because on previous versions of the kernel the wireless chip wasnt supported either (it's an intel atom cpu and a broadcom wireless chip)14:30

tomreyndavido_: if it's in a VM, try assigning more video RAM.14:33

AnticomHi all. I just got my new laptop and wanted to set up dual-boot alongside windows (which is already installed). I've known Ubuntu for quite some time but never put time into checking out the various flavours15:59
AnticomThing now is, that I'm actually not that big of a Unity fan15:59
AnticomMy first question would be, whether i could (easily) switch to another flavour once i've installed ubuntu by juggling arround with some packages16:00
xanguaYou have plenty of desktops choices16:00
Anticomafaik that should be rather straight forward or are there any pit-falls i'd have to be aware of?16:00
xanguaKubuntu, Xubuntu, Ubuntu mate, Ubuntu gnome16:01
BluesKaj!flavors | Anticom16:01
ubottuAnticom: Recognized Ubuntu flavors build on Ubuntu and provide a different user experience out of the box. They are supported both in #ubuntu and in their flavor channel. For a list, see https://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu-flavours16:01
Anticomxangua: My favourite choice would be what once was refered to as ubuntu (gnome) classic16:01
AnticomBluesKaj: I've checked that one out already :)16:01
AnticomHowever ubuntu classic isn't a thing anymore as far as i'm concerened16:01
kostkon!desktop16:02
ubottuA desktop environment is what "puts the pieces of a !GUI together". The available desktop environments in Ubuntu are !GNOME (ubuntu-desktop), !KDE (kubuntu-desktop), !Xfce (xubuntu-desktop), !LXDE (lubuntu-desktop), IceWM, !Fluxbox, WindowMaker (wmaker), FVWM and others - See also !Flavors16:02
BluesKajAnticom, it's THE definitive site for info16:02
AnticomI'd like to have gnome but not that default gnome UI that's currently shipped16:02
AnticomI just want the bar at the top with an icon at the top left as my launcher16:02
kostkonAnticom, try mate16:02
Anticomkostkon: so mate is based on gnome?16:03
xanguaAnticom: on gnome 216:03
kostkonAnticom, yes gnome3 afaik, but with the gnome2 look-and-feel16:03
kostkonAnticom, or probably gnome216:04
Anticomkostkon: and this is what the launcher looks like (when SUPER key is pressed) http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MD9-Bw30rek/U5ikWY_d6bI/AAAAAAAAI4A/hHPv-ueuxHo/s1000/slingscold-launcher-3.jpg ?16:04
kostkonAnticom, that's looks like a 3rd party launcher, more likely gnome shell's, on top of unity16:05
Anticomkostkon: But mate *has* a launcher where you can search for installed stuff?16:07
AnticomI never used mate, sorry for the stupid questions :S16:07

nchambershey guys I'm trying to setup some init scripts for nginx on ubuntu 14.04, which I have installed in /opt/nginx/sbin/nginx. I tried using https://www.nginx.com/resources/wiki/start/topics/examples/ubuntuupstart/ and updated the path for nginx. This doesn't appear to properly control the service. Is there something better I can use18:49

ubottuleftyfb: While Google is useful for helpers, many newer users don't have the google-fu yet. Please don't tell people to "google it" when they ask a question.20:53
EriC^^newly_bashed: what command did you make and didn't work?20:53
Peyamnacc, Im on ubuntu servers20:53
leftyfbtgm4883: I didn't tell anyone to "google it". I did the googling for them.20:53
tgm4883leftyfb: sending them a link to lmgtfy is generally frowned upon. I think you knew that though since you went through the effort of hiding the link20:54
naccPeyam: i don't know what you mean.20:54
newly_bashedlscpu | awk '/L3 cache/Core(s) per socket { print $3 $1 }' | sed -e 's/K//' hehe :))20:54
naccPeyam: this channel is on FreeNode. so is #snappy20:54
leftyfbtgm4883: nope, no trouble. I have an extension that takes my search result and sticks the link into my paste buffer20:54
Peyamnacc, oh oh you wrote first with two ##20:55
tgm4883leftyfb: ok, well in any case. Now you know20:55

EriC^^newly_bashed: you wouldn't have learned anything if i do and it's homework21:04
tgm4883newly_bashed: you've already been told it's more difficult to search for both those lines in a single command, so split it into two21:05
tgm4883Not to mention this isn't exactly ubuntu support21:05
Hurricane314Hello!21:06
Peyamcan find anything21:07
Hurricane314I have a question about GRUB. When I turn on my computer I see two entries for Windows, one is "Windows Boot UEFI loader" and one is "Windows Boot Manager (via /dev/sda2)". What's the difference between these?21:09
EriC^^newly_bashed: you have to escape some stuff, i advise reading the gnu tools summary it's quick and teaches a lot, lscpu | awk '/L3 cache/ {print $3} /Core\(s\) per/ { print $4 }'21:11
EriC^^newly_bashed: you should read both of them, it'd help you a lot21:12
newly_bashedfor sure21:12
dckx-ghi, I have a gygabite aero14v7 laptop, and I'm trying to connect to screens to it, one via hdmi and the other one via mini display port... none of the screens are being recognized. The same screens were recognized by a different laptop using the same Ubuntu version (16.04)21:12
EriC^^read the sag.pdf first, then the gnu commands one, they're not that long once you start reading them21:12
newly_bashedyou are ginus21:13
newly_bashedgenius21:13
EriC^^newly_bashed: no, i read them :D21:14
newly_bashedheh21:14
newly_bashedheh21:14
newly_bashedhehe21:14
newly_bashedbut you just saved me running extra cmd21:14
EriC^^newly_bashed: sorry, it should be lscpu | awk '/L3 cache/ {print $3} /Core\(s\) per/ { print $4 }' | sed -e 's/K//'21:16
newly_bashedI can do that by my self21:17
newly_bashedI mean21:17
newly_basheddon't do that much for me21:18
EriC^^no worries :)21:20
dckx-gso, anyone around has an idea on where to start troubleshooting my issue? Ubuntu 16.04 not recognizing additional displays connected to a laptop21:21
bcowancheck in /var/log/Xorg.0.log and see whats going on21:22
dckx-gbcowan: Thanks, I just checked it. So, should I be looking for something in particular? This is the closest to my additional monitors not being recognized or something:  9.115] (II) modeset(0): Output eDP-1 connected21:27
dckx-g[     9.115] (II) modeset(0): Output DP-1 disconnected21:27
dckx-g[     9.115] (II) modeset(0): Output DP-2 disconnected21:27
bcowandckx-g, well at least the are getting recognized, you may have some key sequence or something to enable them idk21:30
dckx-gbcowan: ok, cool, thank you21:33
bcowandckx-g, have you checked system settings/display and see if they show up there21:35
dckx-gbcowan: yes, they don't. I read somewhere that people where having problems getting screens recognized with this laptop, just can't remember where. Could it have to do with the fact I'm using nouveau drivers instead of nvidia?21:37
bcowandckx-g, could be idk...just throwing out suggestions21:38
dckx-gbcowan: sure, thanks. I'm trying to get support in the nvidia channel now, we'll see if they can help21:39
Hurricane314Can anyone answer me?21:45

binarydepthIs the "ubuntu-bug" command destined for end users?22:10
binarydepthIs the "ubuntu-bug" command destined for end users?22:10
naccbinarydepth: yes22:10
tewardbinarydepth: it's destined for multiple classes of users, including end users22:10
tewardso it is destined for end users (as well as power users like myself)22:10
naccalthough "destined" seems a bit extravagant22:10
teward^ that22:11
binarydepthhahhaha Ok thank you guys, I was in doubt of using it22:12
netsrotHi, how do I configure networking no to block booting and just run in background?22:13
binarydepthI have used it before but I never asked for that info22:13
binarydepthIs there a way to promote a bug report?22:13
naccbinarydepth: what do you mean?22:14
binarydepthlook for other to check if they are affected too. Maybe some people just live with the bug or don't know they can file a bug report22:14
binarydepthHas any way being set to do this?22:15
binarydepthbeen*22:15
naccbinarydepth: I'm sorry, still don't understand. You want, when you file a bug, for Launchpad to find if anyone who has not filed a bug is affected?22:15
tewardbinarydepth: short of going and looking through bugs yourself, no there's no way to see if the bug is affecting others22:16
binarydepthMmmm maybe the simple way will be to go to the point. I want to see if the bug can get more "affects me" marks22:16
binarydepthLaunchpad asks if a bug also affects me in any bug I see. So I want to see if others can check my bug and see if it affects them22:18
binarydepthIs a Thunderbird bug so it could be there for many people22:18
tewardbinarydepth: i suggest looking through the Thunderbird bugs first22:18
tewardbefore you create a bug22:18
tewardbecause it's entirely possible the issue's already been reported22:18
binarydepthI did, but I will double check22:19
naccbinarydepth: ok, but what you're askinng for (it reads) is that if you file a bug, you somehow want everyone who uses thunderbird to be notified if their bug is your bug?22:20
binarydepthNo I think that's done by devs when they mark as duplicate. I guess I can simply go to the forums and ask my question with a link, so anyone who sees the post can test if they have the same bug and decide if they want to mark themselves affected22:23
dckx-ghello. Would anyone be kind enough to guide me through the process of installing nvidia drivers for my laptop? I did it in the past and I messed up everything and ended up having to reinstall  ubuntu22:27
Bashing-omdckx-g: Sure. what is the hardware and what drivers are presently installed ? Pastebin - lspci -k|grep -iEA5 'vga|3d' ; dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia* - .22:31
dckx-gBashing-om: thank you. I was trying to figure out how many commands are in your message? I tried running them together but I got a few error messages. Am I supposed to run them separately and pastebin each output?22:36
binarydepthhere's the post: https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2373908&p=13696490#post1369649022:37

dckx-gBashing-om:  lspci -k|grep -iEA5 'vga|3d'  https://paste.ubuntu.com/25716410/22:45
dckx-gBashing-om: dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia* - . https://paste.ubuntu.com/25716417/22:45
dckx-gBashing-om: is that correct?22:45
Bashing-omdckx-g: I wandered away .. looking ^ .22:46
Bashing-omdckx-g: Hybrid graphics - no nvidia driver is installed . What release is this ? As it now makes a difference .22:49
dckx-gBashing-om: Ubuntu 16.04. By the way, my computer is fine as it is with no nvidia drivers, excepting that it doesn't recognize two screens I'm connecting to it. If there is a different approach to getting those screens working, that'd be fine by me.22:50
binarydepthSo it wasn't a bug, just a default setting22:50
Bashing-omdckx-g: No experience with multi-monitors I can not directly advise . Were me I would install the nvidia driver .22:53
dckx-gBashing-om: ok, cool. Let's do it then22:53
Bashing-omdckx-g: run ' sudo apt purge nvidia* ; sudo apt update ; sudo apt upgrade ; sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall ' . reboot and let's see what we look like .22:55
dckx-gdone, rebooting now22:58
zenguyhey which is the best ftp client for ubuntu gnome, gftp?23:01
zenguyfilezilla?23:01
zenguyhmm23:01
dckx-gBashing-om: ok23:02
Bashing-omdckx-g: "OK" as in all is now good ?23:03
dckx-gBashing-om: ok as in "I'm back"... but yes, things seem to be good23:03
zenguyeh hehe i'll try them all23:04
Bashing-omdckx-g: Great . I would be interested in seeing what the system chose . ' sudo lshw -C display ; dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia* ; .23:05
netsrotHow do I use -nw option with dhclient in the config file?23:06
dckx-gBashing-om: lshw http://paste.ubuntu.com/25716550/23:07
dckx-gBashing-om: dpkg http://paste.ubuntu.com/25716561/23:08
Bashing-omdckx-g: Looks good :) ..it is nvida-prime to control the graphic sets . nvidia-setting for the displays .23:10
dckx-gBashing-om: great, thank you!23:10
Seveasnetsrot: I'm afraid that that's not possible23:10
SeveasThe docs don't mention an option, so I looked at the source, and there's nothing there either.23:11
netsrotSeveas: I found I should use allow-hotplug to get the same effect. I haven't tried it yet.23:13
Seveasnetsrot: I'd be surprised. allow-hotplug doesn't exist :)23:14
Bashing-omdckx-g: glad2help :)23:15
netsrotShould be possible to use it in interfaces file.23:16
Seveasah, ok, so fixing the problem before dhclient starts23:16
randomguy01i have samba set up and working, and sshfs setup and working, however if I sshfs to a mount point in the samba share, windows 10 cant access it. (double checked all the usual stuff like user perms and allow other), ideas as to why this might be?23:18
randomguy01oh and hello room :)23:19
dckx-gnow, I have a pretty weird situation with the multiple displays, in case someone wants to throw a hand. I have 3 screens. External1 and External2 work fine. Built-in only shows cursor, but it is black other than that. Built-in is recognized in ubuntu settings, but not recognized in nvidia settings. Any ideas?23:20
randomguy01dckx-g: sounds like an issue I ran into years ago, turned out it needed a bios update to patch some video stuff23:23
Bashing-omdckx-g: That the internal display is not functional is surprising . What results when shutting dowm, disconnecting the 2 external displays and now booting up , Is the internal display now good ?23:27
dckx-gBashing-om: I don't about restarting yet, but if I mirror the displays, they all work.23:29
Bashing-omdckx-g: Regrets, but now out of my experience range .23:29
dckx-gBashing-om: no worries, thanks for all the help. I will reboot now anyway to see what happens23:30

dckx-gany expert with multiple displays? I have two external screens and a built-in display in a laptop. The two external displays work fine. The built'in is recognized by ubuntu but not recognized in nvidia-settings. The screen is black, but I can see the mouse cursor when I move between the external screens.23:43
