anqxyrok, so I tried googling this for a bit, couldn't find anything, so maybe someone here can help me06:52
anqxyrwhen the headphones are plugged in, I get sound both from speakers and from the headphones06:53
anqxyrI can go to alsamixer, and manually turn down the "front" sound to zero, and that works06:53
anqxyrbut it doesn't work automatically, despite the "auto-mute mod" option being enabled06:54
anqxyrand the multimedia keys on the keyboard are tied to speakers no matter what06:54
anqxyrkubuntu 17.04, new pc, new install, it's been like that from the start06:55

hateballanqxyr: has this worked with a different OS at some point?07:12
hateballthere's a hardware switch that is supposed to trigger this, so I am thinking if that is simply... not working07:12
anqxyrit's never worked on this pc. It's a used pc too, I just recently bought it07:13
anqxyr*never worked for me07:14
hateballanqxyr: Do you have a different pair of headphones to test with?07:15
anqxyryup, let me try07:15
anqxyryeah, no change07:16
anqxyrif it's a hardware issue, just having a script that would adjust the volumes and binding it to a hotkey would work for me07:17
anqxyrbut alsamixer doesn't have any args to directly adjust the volume, that I could tell07:17
hateballIt could also be a matter of needing to supply module options for snd-hda-intel07:17
anqxyrwhere should I look for for something like that?07:17
hateballwhich is what I assume you have07:17
hateballWhat is the model of the laptop (?) ?07:17
hateballAnd if you could !paste the output of "lspci"07:18
anqxyrit's a desktop pc, assembled from used parts from all over the place07:18
hateballright07:18
hateballstill, it has some chipset :)07:18
anqxyrhttps://pastebin.com/SgjWPZTJ07:19
hateballanqxyr: could you run it with "lspci -nv" instead?07:20
anqxyrsure thing07:20
anqxyrhttps://pastebin.com/rRmZngAw07:21
anqxyruh, should probably rerun this as root? looking at all these access denied07:21
anqxyrhttps://pastebin.com/9vyxdnab07:22
hateballanqxyr: interesting, googling "8086:1c20 snd_hda_intel" gives as first hit http://mailman.alsa-project.org/pipermail/alsa-devel/2014-November/083932.html07:24
hateballlets see what we can make of this07:24
hateballanqxyr: long shot but... uh you could try "echo "options snd-hda-intel model=auto" |sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/snd-hda-intel.conf"07:31
hateballanqxyr: and then reboot, see if that automatigically solves it. otherwise remove the file /etc/modprobe.d/snd-hda-intel.conf so it doesnt mess with anything else07:32
anqxyrk, let me reboot07:33
anqxyrnah, no luck07:34
hateballcould be a different model option that works tho, but it's harder since this is a frankenbuild07:35
anqxyris there any pure-cli volume control utility? I'd be ok with just hotkeying a script to fix the volumes07:35
anqxyrok, google tells me that the answer is amixer07:36
hateballanqxyr: that's for pure alsa, but you have by default pulseaudio07:37
anqxyrI'll probably go looking in that direction, it seems like it's the one most likely to bear fruit07:37
hateballwhich alsa goes through07:37
hateballso you can use pactl for that07:37
anqxyrthanks, I'll try that too. Idk if that'll work, alsamixer is the only thing that managed to adjust volumes independently so far07:38
anqxyrkubuntu's gui volume control thing uses pulseaudio, I think, and it's completely blind to headphones07:38
anqxyreither way, huge thanks for all your help07:40

=== karab666 is now known as karab44
ForceRecongood question.. not sure with my setup what exactly I am missing but generally if I try and install things that are just downloads from the main websites for distro, they tend not to work. I usually don't get any video or the machine just does not boot to anything past the grub option chosen.. so I would gather it is nvidia10:09
ForceReconmight be bluetooth too..10:09
ForceReconchances are there are a couple more items in there that I have no clue about10:09
hateballForceRecon: do you currently have Kubuntu installed?10:11
ForceReconcurrently I run kubuntu in a vmware session and it is perfect..  just wish it would work that way outside of the vmware guest os session10:11
hateballRight10:11
hateballIf you have nvidia hardware, the binary blob will never be distributed on the installation media, and you'll need to use the 'nomodeset' kernel parameter to get a display going10:11
ForceReconon a side note anyone here running steam on kubuntu.. I do play one game linux port and would like to make sure after getting kubuntu to work that that works as well.10:12
hateballThen you can install, and have the installer grab restricted drivers as needed during runtime10:12

MrokiiHi. I'm not sure if this is a problem directly related to Kubuntu... I installed the "ScreenSaver" app from within "Discover". However, when I try to configure it, in the main section of the window (where the graphical effects should be sampled, there's only a message saying "Not Installed". That seems to happen with every selectable screensaver-effect. Any ideas what the problem could be?12:09
lordievaderGood afternoon12:10
BluesKajHey folks12:10
MrokiiOkay, I got it working now. However there's another problem. The GLSlideshow-screensaver doesn't change images. It looks as if it does some effect to switch images, but it's always the same image that is displayed.12:19
lordievaderIIRC you needed to set a source dir somewhere else for that.12:20
lordievaderIf it is part of xscreensaver there was some xscreensaver-setup utility. (Can't remember the exact naming)12:20
Mrokiilordievader: I did that. The Slideshow choses one of the images from the folder randomly, but never changes to another image, always displaying the one chosen initially.12:22
lordievaderOh, err. There are no interval settings?12:23
Mrokiilordievader: There is indeed a setup-window where on can chose the path and set some parameters. This part works, as it takes an image from the folder I chose.12:23
Mrokiilordievader: There are, and the interval itself seems to work. There is some effect that suggest that another image will be displayed, but the image never really changes.12:23
ForceReconwhen I install kubuntu on a drive that is encrypted will the installer just wipe out the drive and reencrypt it or do you need to do something special before hand12:24
lordievaderHmm, then I don't really know. What you could do is try to launch the screensaver manually in a Konsole, that might throw some error.12:25
lordievaderMrokii: ^12:25
Mrokiilordievader: It seems to do some fading-effect every few seconds but the image never changes.12:25
Mrokiilordievader: Yeah, I guess I'll try that.12:25
lordievaderForceRecon: It will do whatever you tell it to do.12:25
ForceReconjust was not sure if the drive would tell you.. hey no space for you here I am already encrypted and now you are stuck with me.. :)  lol.. pre dive measures12:26
lordievaderMost OS'es nowaday tell you if something is in use or not.12:28
ForceRecondo you guys actually partition your drives any special way?  I just usually do the entire disk and let the OS decide on a swap, home, os partition.. Is there ultimately a better way of doing it?12:29
lordievaderFor me it depends on the machine, but I usually make a full lvm pv or pv+luks partition of the drive.12:30
lordievaderThen i make partitions as I see fit.12:30

ForceReconMorning BluesKaj, thanks for turning me onto Kubuntu, really enjoying it..12:49
MrokiiBluesKaj: I don't think that's possibly. The settings-window only lets me chose folders, not individual files.12:51

oh4When going to "Driver Manager", my video card driver is set to "Using X.Org X server -- Nouveau display driver from xserver-xorg-video-nouveau". I have the option to switch to the recommended "Using NVIDIA binary driver - version 375.66 from nvidia-755 (Recommended Driver)"22:46
oh4Should I switch to the nvidia? Any reason the install didn't choose that one but instead chose Nouveau?22:46
clivejooh4: default install tends to only install free drivers22:48
oh4oh22:49
oh4I thought it would install nvidia if it saw the card for it22:49
oh4hmm22:49
clivejoI think there are issues with shipping non-free drivers on the iso/install media22:49
oh4issues as in legal issues or just compatibility?22:50
oh4I'm wondering if I should switch to the nvidia but concerned video will break22:50
clivejolegal22:50
oh4that's why I ask22:51
oh4ah, ok...makes me feel a little better :)22:51
clivejousually the nvidia drivers work better (I use the proprietary drivers on my system)22:52
oh4koo...I'll give it a shot...thanks!22:52
clivejoonly problem is that NVidia can be slow about fixing stuff22:52
oh4yea, that is true22:52
clivejoand don't support Wayland :(22:52
oh4at least on the Linux22:52
oh4oh, that I didn't know22:53
oh4I wonder when wayland will make it's way here22:53
clivejoplasma is already on Wayland or supported on it22:54
oh4they'd have to do something at that point once kde is ported to it, no?22:54
clivejohaven't been able to test it myself due to having NVidia driver installed22:54
oh4dang, maybe I should look into this a little more...I'm running 17.0422:54
clivejohttps://blog.martin-graesslin.com/blog/22:55
clivejohe is the guy works on kwin22:55
valorie"kde" will not be ported to nvidia22:56
valorienvidia needs to port to wayland22:56
valoriekde is the community, but the plasma/kwin team will not be doing anything special for nvidia22:57
oh4good info...thanks for sharing22:57
valorienvidia needs to conform to the standards for wayland, and so far they are doing their own special "magic"22:57
valoriemakes me angry, since I have nvidia as well22:58
valorieand wayland is the future22:58
valorieI wish they would get with the program22:58
oh4one can hope22:59
oh4let's see what happens22:59
valorieeveryone is waiting on them23:00
