tomasinohappy saturday, folks -- I'm about to try installing lubuntu on a late 2008 aluminum macbook. Any advice before I start?17:46
antisbest of luck :)17:53
tomasinothanks17:53
wxltomasino: intel chip, right?17:54
antishaving running lubuntu on late 2007 plastic macbook - runs pretty good. if you don't get the booloader (grub) up, try the "refind" boot manager - i installed it on a usb-stick for test and on disk later on.17:55
antiswxl, since 2006 yes17:57
wxltomasino: in that case ^ make sure you use amd6417:57
tomasinofantastic advice. thank you17:59
Nightlyhello18:37
tomasinorefine is the best advice. thanks so much for that. I've got it running18:51
tomasinoaaaaand it's not detecting the wireless card, of course18:54
tomasinowhy is that always the challenge? :)18:54
agaidabecause of nice people with non-free licenses and firmware19:13
agaidaas usual19:13

tsimonq2y19:37
antisis this how they communicate at alphabet? ^^19:38
agaidatomasino: in such rare cases a wifi-cable is handy https://y.5id.eu/t19:40
* agaida hide19:41
tsimonq2antis: Maybe :P19:48
tsimonq2agaida: lol19:48
agaidatsimonq2: not my idea - just reality19:49
antistomasino, you could get a good overview via the "nmcli" command - unfortunately it is somewhat hidden in lubuntu and part of the nm-applet network management toolchain… :)19:50
antistomasino, you could further check and install proprietary drivers via "settings -> software & updates -> additional drivers" and/or find the chip information (presumingly broadcom) and add the vendor id to some configuration file in /etc/… (i don't remember exactly, sorry)20:05
antisah and almost forgot -> "pommed" is a very important thing as well :)20:06
antisfound some good reference for the wifi problem: https://wiki.debian.org/MacBook/Wireless20:10
nanoi need to icon pack21:16
tomasinothanks antis and agaida. I have everything working well. I just had to install the broadcom drivers like usual. This laptop has an ethernet port, luckily, so thath was just a couple minutes worth of work.21:23
tomasinoI'm doing a dist upgrade now but everything looks fully functional and it performs fantastically well for a 9 year old machine21:23
tomasinothis is my first time experimenting with lubuntu and so far it's great. I'm normally on Mint with i3, but I'll keep this distro in mind for older hardware.21:23
agaidaintel macs are not really old or outdated - thats the nice thing about apple21:25
agaidathey was delievered with all the needed things in good quality and quantity21:26
tomasinoif it wasn't for their software21:46
agaidathe only infamous thing with apple and pc hardware was their usage of ATi cards or chips if i remember right21:52
agaidaback in 2009 i had to learn patch, debuild and such things first to get my ATi 4950 running with ubuntu21:53
agaidahihihi - the bug(s) with the patch from an amd employee are still open in launchpad21:55
Otherto connect to lubuntu, from a windows 7 machine, I read I should use Xrdp.  But I get nothing but a xwindows login then an empty desktop.  Is Xrdp the way to go?23:21
demophobiawhat do you mean 'connect to lubuntu'?23:22
Othera remote desktop23:22
demophobiaah, thanks. i can't help with your question.23:23
